Author's note
I have been planning this chapter for a very very long time and have put a lot of thought into how I wanted it to go down. There has been a debate among you guys on a particular plot point. Some of you wanted to to follow the Anime, others hated this part of the anime and thought I should change it.
In the end I believe I came up with a solution that will leave both parties happy. So without further a-due , here is chapter 23

Chapter 23: Charizard Thrills
It was 9:13 in the morning on route 10 and the gang was having breakfast at their campsite. Ash and Serena had made sure all of the pokemon were given their breakfast, while Red looked at the map.
"Ok if we get moving right after breakfast we should be able to get to Geosenge Town by noon" Red said.
"I hear that Geosenge town is suppose to have rocks with mystical powers" Serena said as she filled her Furfrou's dish.
"Mystical powers?" Bonnie said in confusion.
"Serena's right, the rocks in Geosenge town are suppose to hold a great power from an ancient being" Clemont said.
"We'll have to ask someone there about it when we get there" Ash said. Just when he and Serena joined the others for some eggs and fruit, they heard a familiar voice. Ash turned to see none other than Gary and his fan club standing behind them.
"Gary? What are you doing here?" Ash said when he saw his rival.
"Me and the girls are on our way to Shalour city , I heard that there's a place there called the Tower of mastery. Apparently he guy who runs the place knows a lot about Mega evolution, and my Grandpa wants to learn the secrets of Mega evolution. Plus I was hoping maybe I could get one of my pokemon to Mega evolve" Gary said.
"Speaking of your pokemon, we never did get a chance to battle the last time we met" Ash said as he got up. This caught Gary's attention. He smiled and turned back towards Ash.
"I guess we didn't did we".
"Oh this should be good" Red said.
"Any of you guys feel like battling?" Ash said turning to his pokemon.
"PIka!", "Groww!", "Squawk!", "Grawww!", "Char!". They all said back with enthusiasm.
"Alright Ashy boy we'll have a battle. On one condition, we battle in a way that lets us see who has more strong pokemon" Gary said.
"What does he mean by that?" Serena said.
"He means each pokemon we use can only battle once. Then whoever wins the best out of 3 battles wins" Red said.
"You're on" Ash said.
"Alright if you two want to battle, I'll be the referee" Clemont said.
Ash and Gary walked over to an open patch of grass while Serena , Red, and Bonnie stood behind Ash. Gary's fan club stood behind him and began their cheers.
"Gary Gary he's the best, he'll defeat you like the rest" .
"Good luck Ash" Bonnie said.
"Beat him Ash" Red said.
"Show him what you can do" Serena said.
"Alright I choose you Fletchinder!" Ash said as Fletchinder flew forwad ,from behind Ash.
"A Fletchinder huh, alright lets see how he handles my Wartorle!" Gary said throwing a pokeball forward. A large blue turtle pokemon with big white ears and sharp fangs came out.
"A Wartortle huh, I guess your squirrel evolved" Ash said.
"Yeah and he's close to being a Blastoise. Let''s show him what you can do Wartortle. Start off with a Watergun!".
"Fletchinder dodge and use Arial ace" Ash said. Wartortle opened his mouth and unleashed a powerful jet of water towards Fletchinder. The fire bird quickly moved out of the Water gun's path , then flew up high preparing to use arial ace.
"Wartortle use withdraw!" Wartortle quickly got into his shell just before Fletchinder slashed him with Arial ace. Inside his shell, Wartortle only took minor damage from the Arial ace. This left Ash frustrated that his attack had little effect.
"Now use Watergun while he's still close!" Gary shouted. Wartortle quickly came out of his shell and blasted Fletchinder with a jet of water.
"Fletchinder fly up and away from him!" Ash said. Fletchinder quickly flew high into the air away from Wartorle.
"Now come down on him with Steel wing!" Ash said. Fletchinder flew straight down at Wartortle with his wings now coated in metal.
"Wartorle use Withdraw and Iron defense" Gary said. Once again Wartortle went into his shell, only this time he raised the defensive strength of his shell at the same time. When Fletchinder hit Wartortle, his wings just glanced off the shell.
"Oh no" Ash said.
"His shell defense is just too strong" Serena said.
"Water pulse!" Gary said.
"Fletchinder move out of the way with quick attack". When Wartortle came out of his shell he saw where Fletchinder was flying and smiled.
"Hit him where he's gonna be!" Gary shouted. Wartortle blasted a Water pulse in front of Fletchinder's path.
"Fletchinder quick change your flight path!" Ash shouted. Fletchinder tried to change his flight path but was too late , and collided with the water pulse. Ash noticed that after being hit with Water pulse , Fletchinder looked a bit confused.
"Oh no , I think that Water pulse made Fletchinder confused", "Pika".
"Great now that he's disoriented use Rapid spin" Gary said. Wartortle quickly went into his shell and spun himself forward crashing into Fletchinder.
"Fletchinder!" Ash shouted.
"Now finnish him with skull bash!". Wartortle came out of his shell and launched himself head first at Fletchinder, smashing right into his stomach knocking the flame bird out.
"Fletchinder is unable to battle" Clemont said.
"Ha ha! Round one goes to the champ!" Gary said.
"Gary Gary he's the best he'll defeat you like the rest!".
"Hey didn't they already say that?" Bonnie said.
"Yeah they did" Serena said as she and Bonnie gave the cheerleaders very unimpressed looks.
"Don't let this get you down Ash, you've still got one more chance" Red said.
"Fletchinder return, get some rest. Alright Pikachu ready to show him what you can do" Ash said.
"Pika!" Pikachu jumped down from Ash's shoulders and sparked his cheeks at Gary.
"Time for round two and the knockout. Go Eevee!" Gary said. A small fox like pokemon a big ears and a tail came out.
"An Eevee " Ash said.
"He's so cute!" Bonnie said with stars in her eyes.
"Eevee start off with swift" Gary said. Eevee whipped his front paws forward a few times, launching several sharp stars at Pikachu.
"Pikachu quick attack!". Pikachu sprinted forward with unbelievable speed. He easily avoided each of the incoming stars , then slammed into Eevee knocking him back a foot.
"Alright great job Pikachu!","Pika!".
"So you wanna play that way huh, Eevee show him your quick attack" Gary said.
"Pikachu use quick attack and stay agile around him. Then use slam" Pikachu smiled as he sprinted forward at the same time Eevee did. While Eevee was very fast, Pikachu was far faster. Every time Eevee tried to get Pikachu with Quick attack, Pikachu moved out of the way with an even faster Quick attack.
"Geeze that's one fast Pikachu" Gary said as he started to sweat a little. After Eevee missed again , Pikachu sprinted forward at Eevee's legs aiming his head low. Pikachu knocked Eevee off his feet and onto his side as he ran under him. Once Pikachu was past Eevee he quickly turned around and Slammed Eevee just as he was starting to get up.
"Great job Pikachu!" Ash shouted.
"You're doing great Pikachu keep it up!" Serena shouted.
" Pikachu get in close with Quick attack". Pikachu began sprinting towards Eevee.
"Eevee Sand attack into Take down!" Gary shouted. Eevee waited until Pikachu was close then splashed sand into his eyes.
"Oh no! Now Pikachu can't see!" Serena said.
"Pikachu keep running for another moment then dive down low!" Ash shouted. Eevee prepared to use take down, but when he hurled himself at his opponent , Pikachu had dove forward aiming low. He swept right under Eevee , causing the fox pokemon to faceplant on the grass.
"Pikachu turn around and use Thunderbolt right behind you!".
"Eevee quick use Quick attack!" Gary shouted. Eevee tried to get up but Pikachu had already turned around and unleashed Thunderbolt despite not being able to see.
"PIka chu!". He shouted as he filled Eevee with electricity and knocked him out.
"Eevee is unable to battle!" Clemont said.
"We did it Pikachu!" , Pikachu got the sand out of his eyes and ran back to Ash's arms.
"I guess round two goes to Ash" Red said smiling at Gary.
"Well I'll have round three" Gary said as he returned his Eevee.
"I choose you Charmeleon!" Ash said as his Charmeleon ran forward.
"A Charmeleon in Kalos? How, oh it doesn't matter. Go Arcanine!" A large tiger like pokemon came out and snarled at Charmeleon. The Arcanine gave a very threatening look as Charmeleon got a little Intimidated.
"Intimidate, that's not good. Now Charmeleon's moves won't be as effective" Red said.
"Charmeleon start off with Dragon rage" Ash said.
"Arcanine use Extreme speed!" As Charmeleon opened his mouth and unleashed a powerful burst of Dragon energy, Arcanine sprinted forward with incredible speed. Avoiding the Dragon rage and knocking Charmeleon onto the ground.
"Quick use Dragon rage!" Ash shouted.
"Thunder fang!" Gary shouted. Arcanine slammed his front paws on Charmeleon's arms keeping him from getting up, as he prepared to bite the fire lizard. Unfortunately for Arcanine, Charmeleon had enough Dragon energy and unleashed it on Arcanine right in front of his face.
Arcanine was hurled back several feet after being hit with Dragon rage at such close range. Meanwhiel Charmeleon got up and let a puff of smoke out of his nostrils.
"Great job Charmeleon" Ash said.
"Braix!" Braixen said to him blushing a little.
"You ok Arcanine?" Gary said. Arcanine got up and snarled at Charmeleon.
"That a boy, now lets hit him with a Flamethrower!".
"Charmeleon show him your Flamethrower!" Ash said. The two pokemon roared as they unleashed massive jets of fire at each-other. When the two Flamethrower's met they seemed evenly matched.
"Come on Charmeleon you can beat him! Full power!" Ash said.
"Braixen!". Charmeleon roared as the flame on his tail grew larger and overpowered Arcanines Flamethrower.
"Arcanine Wild charge now!". Arcanine quickly covered himself in electricity then sprinted low , avoiding the fires above him and slammed right into Charmeleon. When Arcanine made contact, he unleashed all of the electricity he had been storing inside him.
Charmeleon groaned in pain as electricity flowed through his body.
"Come on Charmeleon don't give up now! You can beat him!", "Pika!". Charmeleon's tail flame grew larger than it had every grown before as it fire covered Charmeleon's entire body.
"Blaze perfect! Get him off you with Dragon claw then Flamethrower!" Ash said. Charmeleon slashed Arcanine across the face with his now Violet claws then picked up the larger pokemon and hurled him across the field.
"Flamethrower!" , "Char!" he roared as he unleashed the largest and most powerful Flamethrower he had every launched before.
"Arcanine look out!" Gary said. Arcanine opened his eyes just in time to see the maelstrom of fire engulf him.
"Arcanine!". Arcanine came out covered in soot and barley moving.
"Arcanine is unable to battle, the winner is Ash!" Clemont said.
"We did it Charmeleon!", "Pikachu!".
"Great job Ash!" Serena said.
"Well done little bro" Red said.
"Aww shoot, I can't believe I lost to Ashy" Gary said as his cheerleaders fell to their knees and started to tear up. Moments later Charmeleon started to glow white and grow bigger.
"Charmeleon!" Ash said.
"He's" Red started.
"Evolving!" Ash said full of excitement. Braixen's eyes widened as she saw Charmeleon evolve.
When the glowing stopped Charmeleon had fully evolved into Charizard and roared.
"Alright ! Alright I've got a Charizard!" Ash shouted. Just before Ash could run out and embrace him, Charizard's eyes turned more fierce looking. He stared at Arcanine with a feral expression and began to growl.
"Huh? Charizard are you ok?" Ash said. Charizard roared , then unleashed a powerful Flamethrower at Arcanine.
"What!?" Ash and the other shouted. Arcanine was hit with Flamethrower and knocked back towards Gary.
"Woah woah! Ash what is your Charizard doing?!" Gary shouted back.
"Charizard stop it!" Ash screamed. Charizard snarled again as he flew forward and slashed Arcanine with his claws.
"Charizard's gone feral!" Clemont shouted.
"Arcanine!" Gary said. Charizard began biting Arcanine's neck and the group saw blood starting to come out.
"Pika Pikachu!" ," Groww!", "Braixen!" The other pokemon shouted at Charizard franticly as he continued to attack Arcanine. Braixen watched in horror , not wanting to believe what she was seeing.
"Charizard return!" Ash said at the same time Gary tried to return his Arcanine. When Charizard saw this he picked up Arcanine and moved away from them.
"Charizard stop this now!" Ash screamed. Charizard ignored him and simply kept attacking Arcanine.
"NO!" Gary said.
"Charizard stop him!" Red shouted. Red's Charizard flew over and grabbed Ash's Charizard by the neck. He hurled him to the ground while Gary sprinted over and returned his Arcanine. With Charizard restrained Ash was able to return him to his Pokeball.
"Gary I'm so sorry , I've never seen him act like this before" Ash said.
"Look Ash I know we've had our differences before but I've never seen a pokemon act like that. You've got some serious issues with that thing and you need to work them out. Now if you'll excuse me I need to get Arcanine to a pokemon center" Gary said as he and his fan club walked away.
"What the hell is wrong with Charizard, he never acted like that wen he was a Charmeleon or Charmander" Ash said.
"I don't know but that was scary" Bonnie said.
"Maybe he just got to into the battle and all the energy from evolving pumped up his adrenaline" Serena said.
"It could be" Clemont said.
"Well Arcanine is safe so lets see if he's still in that kind of mood" Ash said as he let Charizard back out. When Charizard came out he looked at the group for a moment , then laid down on the ground looking away from them.
"Charizard what happened? Why were you attacking Arcanine like that and why wouldn't you listen to me?" Ash said. Charizard didn't even acknowledge him, he simply growled .
"He still isn't listening to me" Ash said as the others gave concerned looks. Pikachu jumped down from Ash's shoulder and walked over to Charizard with Braixen.
"Pika Pikachu" Pikachu said angrily.
"Braixen" Braixen said sounding more concerned. Charizard ignored them and growled again.
"Braixen!" Braixen said. Charizard turned to them with an angry expression then knocked them both away with his tail.
"Pikachu!" Ash said.
"Braixen" Serena said. They ran over and picked up their pokemon.
"Braixen are you ok?" Serena said. Braixen had a very hurt expression on her face as she looked back at Charizard.
"What's wrong with him? Why is he doing this?" Ash said. Clemont smiled as he pushed his glasses up a little.
"Hm hm hm. This looks like the perfect time to test my newest invention" Clemont said as he opened his backpack and took out a red box with a speaker on it and some wires with other components attached.
"What is that?" Red said.
"It's something I've been working on that will help people communicate with pokemon. You see when a pokemon wears this we'll be able to hear what he's thinking. So if we put it on Charizard we can tell what he's thinking and know why he won't listen to you!" Clemont said.
"Uh Clemont I don't think that's a good idea" Ash said.
"Oh come on , this will solve the problem easily" Clemont said as he walked over and put the device on Charizard, who simply ignored him.
"Alright now activate!" Clemont said as he turned the device on. Clemont and the others watched as the device lit up for a few moments then started to spark.
"Uh brother is that suppose to happen?" Bonnie said.
"No" Clemont said concerned. Moments later it exploded leaving Charizard covered in soot.
"Uh oh" Clemont said. Charizard got up and growled at Clemont .
"Uh sorry Charizard I just" Clemont started before Charizard roared and unleashed a Flamethrower at him. Clemont was chased around the grassy path by Charizard using Flamethrower.
"Charizard stop it" Ash said. Charizard continued flying at Clemont trying to burn him alive.
"Charizard stop it right now!" Ash shouted.
"Seriously Charizard you're going to hurt him!" Red shouted.
"Pika Pikachu!", "Groww" , "Noi!" The pokemon shouted.
"Guys it isn't working!" Clemont said as he tried to get away. Moments later Clemont tripped over a rock and fell forward.
"Clemont!" Bonnie and Serena shouted. Clemont looked up as Charizard stood over him with a feral expression on his face.
"Charizard stop now!" Ash said as he sprinted over and got between Clemont and Charizard. When Charizard saw this he smacked Ash across the face with his claws.
"Ash!" Serena and Red shouted. Ash looked up and saw Charizard standing over him preparing to use Flamethrower.
"Pika!" Pikachu sprinted over and stood between Ash and Charizard with his cheeks sparking. Charizard took in a breath as he prepared to use Flamethrower.
"Pikachu!" Pikachu shouted as he blasted Charizard with thunderbolt. Lucario sprinted over and slammed his palm into Charizard's gut at the same time Tyrunt ran over and used Ancient power on Charizard. Ash took out Charizard's pokeball and returned him.
When he got up he held Charizard's pokeball close to his face.
"Why are you doing this Charizard?". Serena walked over and put her arm around his shoulder.
"Maybe we should get to the Geosenge town pokemon center. There could be something wrong with him that Nurse Joy could find" Serena said.
"Maybe" Ash said. It took them 2 hours but the group reached a pokemon center on the side of route 10. Ash was impatiently waiting for Nurse Joy to come back with Charizard, praying she knew what was wrong with him. Serena sat beside him while the others waited at a table.
"I can't believe Charizard would do something like that, it was so scary" Bonnie said.
"Why would his Charizard do that when your's didn't?" Clemont said.
"I've been thinking about it and I may have an idea" Red said.
"Ash are you ok" Serena said holding his hand.
"No, my Charizard went feral almost hurting another pokemon. Wouldn't listen to me, then almost hurt Clemont and me. Why is this happening?" Ash said.
"It's going to be alright Ash. If there's something wrong with Charizard , Nurse Joy will be able to tell us" Serena said. Moments later Nurse Joy came out with all of their pokemon. Ash turned as Pikachu jumped from the counter onto his shoulder.
"Nurse Joy could you find anything wrong with my Charizard?" Ash said.
"I'm sorry, but there was nothing abnormal about you're Charizard that I could see from the tests I gave him" Joy said.
"That's not good" Ash said. He and Serena walked over to the others with the pokeballs.
"So did Nurse Joy find out what's wrong with Charizard?" Clemont asked. Ash and Serena gave very disappointed looks.
"No, she said there was nothing wrong with him" Ash said.
"Then why did he act that way?" Bonnie said.
"I think I know" Red said. Ash and Serena sat down as Red started to explain.
" I started to think about all the things Felix taught us about raising pokemon. I remembered one particular thing he told us about when pokemon evolve. Do you remember that Ash?" Red said.
"Yeah, how when Pokemon evolves it changes more than just Physically" Ash said.
"That's right , they're personalities can change to. Some become more confident as they grow stronger with evolution. It made me think about how Charizard was raised. Remember Ash wasn't his first trainer , Damian was. Damian probably constantly made him feel weak and useless. He was raised with the belief that you have to be powerful to mean anything in the world" Red said.
"That does sound like Damian" Serena said.
You also have to keep in mind that you've only had Charizard for a few weeks now, and in those few weeks has undergone 2 evolutions" Red said.
"He became so powerful so fast that he doesn't think he needs to listen to me anymore" Ash said sounding very sad.
"I'm sorry Ash, but that's probably it" Red said.
"What can we do about it?" Serena said. Ash looked back up with a very determined look on his face.
"I know what I need to do". He stood up , undid his pokeball belt and handed it to Red.
"What are you doing?" Red said.
"I'm going to train with Charizard alone, I will stay with him in a one on one setting until he respects me again" Ash said.
"What!? But Ash he's dangerous you can't be out there alone!" Serena said concerned.
"I know that Serena, but if I'm ever going to get Charizard to listen to me I need to show him that I trust him. That means I have to be alone with him" Ash said.
"Pikachu" Pikachu said nodding.
"Pikachu that includes you too" Ash said.
"Pika!" Pikachu said in shock.
"I'm not so sure about this Ash" Clemont said.
"No I agree with Ash. This is something he needs to do on his own with Charizard" Red said.
"Thanks Red, Pikachu stay with Red". Pikachu reluctantly jumped of his trainer's shoulder. Pikachu didn't like what Ash was doing, but at the same time thought he was doing the right thing. He knew how important all of Ash's pokemon were to him.
Serena was very concerned for Ash's safety, but understood why he was doing it. She got up and gave him a long kiss before saying.
"Just be careful, I can't imagine loosing you" Serena said.
"I will Serena, I'll head down towards the coast line" Ash said. It took him 30 minutes , but Ash reached the cliffside overlooking the beaches.
"Alright , here we go" Ash said as he let out Charizard. When Charizard came out he looked at Ash, then laid down on the ground away from him with a growl.
"Look Charizard, I know you think you don't have to listen to me. But I want us to be friends again, that's why I came here alone. I didn't even bring my other pokemon" Ash said. That caught Charizard's attention. He turned his head just enough to see Pikachu was not on Ash's shoulder. He growled then turned back away from him.
"I came here alone because even after everything I've seen today you're still my pokemon. I still trust you and I want to prove that we can work together again" Ash said. Charizard continued to ignore Ash as he growled. Ash sighed and sweat dropped.
"Charizard what if we found some wild pokemon to battle. I know you like to battle" Ash said. This also caught Charizard's that he was a Charizard he did want to test his new abilities. He got up and walked over to Ash.
"Well , that's a start" Ash said. They began searching the area for wild pokemon. After a few minutes Ash saw a few wingull flying over head.
"What about them?" Ash said. Charizard growled with an uninterested fashion as he looked away. Ash sweat-dropped as he saw Charizard.
"I guess you want to battle something else" Ash said. Eventually they made their way down to the beach and found a pair of Krookodile wrestling on a mound of sand.
"What about them, they seem" Ash started. Without warning Charizard roared and flew at the two Krookodile breathing fire. The two Krookodile turned when they heard Charizard just in time to see the Flamethrower. The Krookodile were engulfed in fire and hurled back by the force.
When they got up they both growled at Charizard and used Stone edge.
"Charizard use dragon claw to" Ash started, but Charizard had other plans. He unleashed Dragon rage as a dozen spiked rocks flew at him. The Dragon rage tore through some of the rocks , but the others continued on and raked across Charizard.
"Charizard!" Ash said concerned, knowing how effective that move was against him. The two Krookodile smiled, then both came at him with Bulldoze.
"Charizard fly up above them and" Ash started. Once again Charizard ignored his trainer and simply blasted the two Krookodile with flamethrower. The attack inflicted great pain on the two Krookodile but didn't stop them. They continued on and both slammed into Charizard with bulldozer, hurling Charizard back behind Ash.
"Oh no" Ash said. The two Krookodile ran over preparing to use Bulldoze again.
"Charizard please, if you want to beat them you need to listen to me and" Ash started. Just before the two Krookodile could reach Charizard. He shot up with a very feral look on his face. Ash saw that blaze had taken effect, as the fire on Charizard's tail was now massive.
Charizard's claws were both glowing violet as he grabbed the two Krookodile by their necks.
"Oh no!" Ash said as Charizard lifted the Krookodiles off the ground by their throats. He roared before breathing fire on them both , then hurling them into the rocks. The two Krookodile were knocked out , but Charizard wasn't finished with them yet.
"No Charizard!" Ash said as he returned Charizard just in time. He let out a sigh and sweatdropped.
"That was a close one". Ash got some distance between him and the two Krookodile before letting Charizard out again. When Charizard came out he started breathing deeply, exhausted from being hit with so many effective moves. Ash took out a hyper potion and slowly walked over towards Charizard.
"This may sting at first but it will heal your injuries" Ash said as he sprayed Charizard with it. When Charizard felt the hyper potion he growled and smacked Ash across the face with his tail, knocking him into the sand. After a minute Charizard felt all his pain fade away as the hyper potion took effect.
When Ash got up he saw Charizard was feeling better.
"Alright, at least you aren't in any more pain". Charizard growled as he turned away from Ash and laid down in the sand.
"Well , I guess battling is out of the question" He looked around and tried to think of something else that he could do to get Charizard to listen to him again. That is when he saw a few more Wingull flying above the water.
"Wait that's it" He turned back to Charizard.
"Hey Charizard, you've got wings now. Don't you want to try them out and fly". Charizard looked at his wings and then the sky and growled a little while smiling. He got up and kicked off the ground, creating a cloud of sand. Ash watched as Charizard soared through the air with great speed , before touching back down next to him.
"That was amazing Charizard, you know maybe if we flew together we" Ash started when Charizard whipped his wings around and knocked Ash onto the ground. Ash slowly got up and saw Charizard was preparing to take off again.
"Alright , I guess I'll have to do this the hard way"He sprinted over and jumped onto Charizard's back just before he could lift off. Charizard flew in the air for a few seconds before he realized Ash was on his back. He snarled and did several sharp turns, trying to shake him off. However, Ash wouldn't let go.
Charizard growled as he did several barrel rolls, steep dives, and abrupt stops. Still Ash refused to let go. Charizard had another idea, he flew very close to the cliff walls aiming his back towards them.
"Charizard wait I know what you're trying to do. Please just land and I'll get off,you're flying to close. If you don't stop you'll hurt yourself and" Charizard narrowly avoided a rock in his path, but kept flying close to the wall.
"Charizard please just listen to me, I just want to help you and" Ash stopped when Charizard flew to close to another part of the wall and slammed into it. Ash and Charizard fell down towards the sand .
"Charizard quick use your wings to regain some control!" Still Charizard ignored Ash, simply breathing fire and flapping his wings to try and stop himself. In the end the two crashed into the sand with burned sand all around them.
"Oh Charizard why can't you just listen to me" Ash said as he with his head spinning.
"Well well well, look who I found" A familiar voice said. Ash and Charizard looked above them and saw none other than Duncan the dragon riding a Salamence.
"Duncan the dragon!" Ash said.
"I remember you twerp, you were one of the pests who interfered with our job a the battle Chateau. What are you doing here all by yourself?" Duncan said as he licked his fangs.
"What are you doing here?" Ash said.
"If you must know, I'm on a mission to collect some certain pokemon Team rocket needs for research on Mega evolution. I thought I'd check down by the Coast for some, and wouldn't you know it I found one of the pokemon on my list" Duncan said with a sinister looking smile.
"What are you talking about?" Ash said.
"Your Charizard, I'll be taking him". Ash quickly got up and got between Duncan and his Charizard.
"I'm not letting you take my Charizard" Ash said.
"Oh yes I am" Duncan said as he threw two pokeballs down to the beach. A pair of massive Noivern came out and roared at Charizard. When Charizard saw the two Noivern, he got up and roared at them.
"Charizard wait, these guys are powerful. We have to think about this before you" Ash started before Charizard flew up and unleashed Flamethrower at the two Noivern.
The Noivern lurched back after being covered in fire and flew up into the air next to Salamence.
"Use Dragon pulse and Air slash" Duncan said.
"Charizard use Dragon rage quickly, then fly down and use Dragon claw to" Ash started. Charizard, however, had other plans. He kicked off the ground at met one of the Noiverns as he prepared to use Dragon pulse.
Charizard unleashed his Flamethrower which collided with the Dragon pulse. It was clear that Charizard wasn't interested in the other Noivern, he was just trying to overpower the first one.
"Charizard he's coming from underneath you!" Ash screamed when he saw the second Noivern preparing to use Air slash. Once again Charizard refused to listen to Ash, and just kept trying to overpower the first Noivern.
This allowed the second Noivern to easily slash Charizard across his stomach with Air slash. Seeing the entire sequence made Duncan's eyes widen, and his grin grow larger.
"Is someone having trouble controlling their pokemon. Why don't you just bring out another one". Ash looked nervous as Duncan licked his filed teeth again.
"My god you really are all alone. This is going to be easier than I thought. Noivern use Air cutter and Dragon pulse".
"Charizard you should stay close to the first one so he can't" Ash started before seeing Charizard's feral expression at the Noivern that used Air slash on him. Charizard Flew after that Noivern as fast as he could.
"No Charizard stop! That's what he want's you to do!" Ash shouted. Charizard just kept flying after the Noivern while blasting Flamethrowers at him. The Noivern kept making sharp turns to avoid each of the Flamethrowers.
The Noivern kept leading Charizard forward until the second Noivern blasted Charizard with Dragon pulse. The second Noivern quickly turned around and slashed Charizard with Air cutter as soon as the Dragon pulse ended.
"Charizard!" After Noivern slashed Charizard's wings a few times, he fell back into the ground.
"Dragon claw!" Duncan said.
"Charizard get back into the air and keep them at a distance with Dragon rage!" Ash said. Charizard simply snarled before breathing fire at the two Noivern as they flew at him. When they got close Charizard tried to slash them with his own Dragon claw, but the Noiverns were too fast.
Ash could only watch in horror as the Noivern relentlessly slashed his Charizard with Dragon claw.
"Charizard return!" Ash shouted as he returned his Charizard to his pokeball.
"Whew that was a close one" Ash said. Not a moment later Charizard came out of the pokeball breathing deeply.
"Charizard what are you doing!?" Ash screamed. Charizard ran back at the Noivern's while unleashing Flamethrower at them.
"Charizard you can't keep fighting return!" Ash said as he raised his pokeball again. This time, however, a sharp metal blade flew down and struck the pokeball.
"What the ?" Ash said. He looked up and saw Duncan with another small blade in his hand.
"No no, where's the fun in that" Duncan said licking his fangs. Ash saw the two Noivern continue to slash and bite his Charizard relentlessly.
"Stop! Please!" Ash screamed as Charizard cried out in pain.
"Ha, you know the scientists said we needed a Charizard. He never said we needed it alive" Duncan said.
"What!?".
"Why not, it won't resist as much. Noivern keep it up" The two Noivern continued to slash and bite Charizard savagely, until Ash started top see blood come from Charizard's body.
"Charizard!" He sprinted over as fast as he could and slammed himself into Charizard's side as hard as he could. This caused Charizard to be knocked to the ground as one of the Noivern's claws went over him. The claws raked across Ash's side and part of his face, but Charizard was saved from the attack.
The Dragon claw continued on and struck the second Noivern. Now enraged the second Noivern began clawing his partner.
"Hey stop that right now!" Duncan said. The two Noivern continued to attack each other, as Ash tried to help Charizard get up. Charizard growled as he tried to get back into the fight , but he was so exhausted that he could barley stand.
"Charizard please, we need to get out of here" Ash said . Charizard growled at him and motioned toward the two Noivern until he saw the slash mark on Ash's face.
"Enough!" Duncan screamed as he returned his Noivern.
"I'll finnish you myself. Salamence use hyperbeam to finnish him". Ash saw Salamance prepare his Hyperbeam and franticly thought of what he could do. He looked around and saw that they were in front of a large mound of sand.
"Alright Charizard we might have a shot at this, but you have to listen to me and run when I say to" Ash said. Charizard snarled as he tried move towards Noivern.
"Charizard please I'm trying to save our lives". Charizard snarled as he continued trying to move forward.
"Hyperbeam!". Salamence unleashed a massive orange beam of energy at Ash and Charizard. Seeing this Ash franticly tripped Charizard as he tried to move forward. This caused them both to fall forward into the sand mound.
When the hyperbeam hit the mound it burst into a massive could of sand.
"Did it hit?" Duncan said. The force of the Hyperbeam managed to hurl Ash and Charizard back and onto their feet.
"Charizard quick this way to the Salamence!" Ash said knowing Charizard would still want to fight. Ash had to use all of his strength to help Charizard stay on his feet as they made their way to a cave near the seawall.
When the sand cloud cleared Salamence flew down closer to the beach.
"Dam he's gone" Duncan sent out his two Noivern.
"I don't care what happened a few minutes ago, you two will find that Charizard". Ash soon as Ash and Charizard got into the cave, Charizard collapsed from exhaustion.
"Well , at least he won't try and fight them again" Ash said. He looked through his backpack but realized he was out of potions.
"Oh no" Ash said as he saw all of the deep slash marks, and gausses on his body.
"I need to find something for that" He walked to the edge of the cave and waited for the two Noivern to go past him. He ran from the cave and scaled the cliffside as fast as he could. Hours passed before he returned the cave with as many berries and herbs as he could find.
Else where at the pokemon center Serena was waiting with Clemont and Bonnie.
"Guys it's been hours, where could he be?" Serena said franticly. The doors to the pokemon center opened and the group quickly turned only to see Red and Pikachu walk in. They both had very worried looks on their faces.
"We looked everywhere, but we couldn't find them", "Pika".
"No! No we have to go back out and find him!". Red put his hands on Serena's shoulders.
"Serena, it's too late out now. We need to wait until morning. Ash is a big boy, he can last one night with Charizard out there. We just need to have faith in him".
Serena looked at the ground, then moved her head back up.
"I guess all we can do is wait until morning". She looked out the window.
"Ash please be alright". As the moon lit up the beach, Ash quietly made his way back to the cave where Charizard was still recovering. Ash knelt down next to Charizard and took out the herbs. Felix had taught Ash and Red how to deal with wounds using herbs.
First Ash used some Pecha berry juice and heal powder on the gausses to prevent infection. Then he used some revival herb to help Charizard regain consciousness. When Charizard opened his eyes he saw what Ash was doing. He snarled and tried to get Ash off him.
"Charizard stop I'm trying to help you!". Charizard kept trying to get up and out of the cave so he could face the two Noivern again.
"Charizard you're still to hurt to fight. You have to stay here!" Ash said trying to keep Charizard down. Charizard roared as he tried to breath fire on Ash, only to have a puff of smoke come out. Ash saw the flame on Charizard's tail was very small.
"Charizard you can't just keep trying to fight! Now please just listen to me!" Ash screamed.
"I know you're powerful and I know you don't want to listen to me anymore, but I'm only trying to help you!". Charizard stopped thrashing and laid his head back down as he started out at the sky. Ash let out a breath of relief as he resumed treating Charizard's wounds.
"Charizard I know you don't think you need to listen to me anymore, and I know I may not be the the greatest trainer in the world. But I love you and I just want us to be able to be friends again" Ash said as he started to tear up.
Charizard continued to stare at out at the night sky when he started to think about some old memories. He stood in the forest against a Raticate.
"Flamethrower Charmander!" Damian said. Charmander gave the best burst of flame that he could , but only managed to give a small Ember. The Raticate easily avoided the Ember then smashed into Charmander with Tackle.
When Charmander got up Damian smacked him on the back of the head.
"I said Flamethrower, all yous keep given me is that weak Ember. Your weak Charmander, just a weak pathetic pokemon". Charmander gave a sad expression as he looked at the ground.
"Only powerful pokemon are worth anything, so you'd better get more powerful if you ever want to be worth anything". Time passed and Charmander was sitting on top of a rock.
"Now just wait right here and I'll come back for you, I promise" Damian said before walking off. Charmander waited on the rock for nearly 2 days before it started to rain and Zubat began attacking him.
He thought that his life was about to end, when he heard a familiar voice.
"Pikachu Thunderbolt!" The Zubat were all knocked out by a powerful Thunderbolt. Charmeleon opened his eyes just enough to see the trainer he had only met earlier that day cover him up with his raincoat and pick him up.
"Hang on Charmander you're going to be ok" Ash said. Charizard then started to think about all his training with and bonding with Ash.
"Charmander use Ember!" Ash said. Charmander unleashed a powerful Ember that knocked Red's Pancham onto his back.
"Great job Charmander!" Ash said as he knelt down and put his arm around Charizard. All of the battles and memories came back to Charizard, when he evolved into Charmeleon, how he won his first gym battle against Shieldon. Ash showed him more love and affection than anyone he had ever been with his entire life.
Minutes turned into hours as the sun rose the next morning. Charizard yawned as he stretched his arms and wings. He turned his head over and noticed Ash had fallen asleep on him.
He then noticed that all of his major injuries had been treated. Ash had stayed up all night trying to heal him. Charizard slowly got up and walked out onto the beach. A few minutes later Ash woke up and noticed Charizard was gone.
"Charizard? Where are you?" He looked around for a minute before he saw Charizard staring out at the horizon. Ash walked over next to Charizard to make sure he was ok.
"Hey Charizard, are you feeling better?". Charizard smiled and gave a slight nod. Ash looked at Charizard's pokeball and saw that the return mechanism was still broken.
"Well, we should probably get back to the pokemon center before Duncan comes back. I know you probably want to fight them. But he's got too many pokemon and we're all alone" Ash said. Charizard turned to Ash and nodded. Ash was relieved that Charizard was listening to reason.
"Alright lets go". Just as they started to turn , a Dragon pulse smashed into the ground in front of them knocking them back. They looked up and saw Duncan riding his Salamence with his two Noivern beside him.
"Well well well, there you two are. It took me all night, but I finally found you" Duncan said licking his fangs. Ash and Charizard got up as Charizard growled.
"Alright we can get away if we" Ash started before Charizard backed up knocking Ash onto his back.
"Huh?" Ash said. Charizard turned his head over to Ash and held his arms over each other.
"Hold on? Oh hold on!" Ash quickly held onto Charizards neck as he kicked off the ground and flew into the air.
"You want to go for another round. Fine by me" Duncan said grinning.
"It'll be different this time around" Ash said. Charizard growled as he flashed his teeth at the two Noivern.
"Noivern use Hurricane and Dragon Pulse".
"Alright Charizard use Air slash and dive down as fast as you can" Ash said. When one of the Noiverns violently flapped his wings creating a cyclone of wind, Ash was relieved to see Charizard actually doing what he told him to do.
Charizard angled his wings and went into a steep dive down. He flew into the bottom of the cyclone so fast that with his Air slash he was able to come right out the other side.
"Perfect now angle up and Flamethrower!". Charizard quickly flew right up as the second Noivern blasted the ground near him with Dragon pulse. Charizard slashed the first Noivern with Air slash , then engulfed the second one in fire.
"Great job Charizard you got them!". Charizard roared in confidence. He realized that what Ash told him to do worked.
"Dumb luck won't save you kid, Noivern use Air slash and Dragon claw". The two Noivern flew at Charizard as fast as they could.
"Charizard meet them head on with Air slash". Charizard flew at the two Noivern preparing to slash them.
"Now stop and backtrack with Flamethrower!" Ash said. Charizard used his wings to abruptly stop and unleashed a massive jet of fire that pushed him back a little and engulfed the two Noivern in fire. After moving through the fire the Noivern realized that Charizard wasn't where they were expecting him to be. As a result they slammed into each other.
"Perfect now use Dragon rage!" Ash said. Charizard smiled as he opened his mouth and blasted the two Noivern with Dragon rage.
"Grrr, stop fooling around Noivern. Use Air cutter and Boomburst!".
"Charizard circle around them and use Flamethrower" Ash said. Charizard flew in a circle around the two Noivern. One of the Noivern flew after him trying to get close enough to use air cutter. Charizard occasionally slowed down to use Flamethrower behind him at the first Noivern.
The second Noivern couldn't get a clear shot at Charizard. Eventually the Noivern unleashed Boombust as Charizard used Flamethrower. Charizard quickly moved away , using the Flamethrower to pushed himself away from the Noivern's attack. The second Noivern had to stop , less he risked being hit by his partner's attack and was coated in fire.
"Both of you use wing attack!" Duncan said.
"Now fly out over the water" Ash said. Charizard flew out over the water as the first Noivern flew after him. The second Noivern was still recovering from the Flamethrower, but slowly flew after Charizard as well.
Ash turned around and saw the Noivern was getting closer.
"Now Charizard Flamethrower!". Charizard abruptly stopped, then turned and blasted the Noivern with Flamethrower. This caused the Noivern to stop as he was engulfed in fire.
"Seismic toss!" Charizard roared as he grabbed the Noivern and flew up higher.
"What?" Duncan said. Charizard did a few circles before flying back down at the other Noivern.
"Throw him!" Ash said. Charizard hurled the first Noivern into the second one as he flew at him. The two Noivern collided and crashed into the sand below.
"You're doing great Charizard!" Ash said. "Grauww!" Charizard roared.
"I have to do this myself. Salamence use Hyperbeam" Duncan said. The Salamence opened his mouth and unleashed Hyperbeam on an unsuspecting Charizard. Ash heard something and turned his head just in time to see it.
"Look out!" Charizard turned his head but was too late. The Hyperbeam made contact with Charizard and hurled him back. While Charizard was able to stay airborne he wasn't the only one hit by the Hyperbeam. Ash also took a bit of the attack, and was also hit by the back of Charizard's neck as he was hurled back.
These two things caused Ash to loose consciousness and fall off of Charizards back. When Charizard felt his back get lighter he looked down and saw Ash falling towards the ocean unconscious.
"Grou!" He shouted in fear. Charizard quickly flew straight down towards the water as fast as he could, trying to catch Ash. The distance between them got smaller and smaller until Ash hit the water and began to sink. A large amount of fear ran through Charizard.
He knew Ash would drowned if he didn't do something but if went into the water, could he get out? Charizard didn't care, he had to save Ash. Charizard flew right into the water leaving Duncan with his mouth hung open.
"What the hell is wrong with that thing. It can't survive in water and it just flew right in". Charizard struggled as he felt the pain of the water against his tail flame. Despite this he kept forcing himself down towards Ash, refusing to let him die.
Charizard felt his vision fade as he got closer and began to run out of air. He reached out with his right claw as Ash's eyes slowly opened. The small stone Felix had given Charizard fell into his paw as the stone he gave Ash fell into his hand. Ash reached out with his hand as his Charizard did the same. Just as they lost the last of their breath , their hands and the stones met.
Meanwhile back above the water Duncan's Noiverns flew back up next to him.
"Well they're dead, oh well maybe we can get the Charizard's corpse with a recovery crew and" Duncan stopped when the water beneath them burst as something massive flew out of the water.
"What the!?" Duncan said as he and his pokemon watched in horror. Ash was riding the back of a pokemon that looked like a much bigger and fiercer version of Charizard. This Pokémon was more sleek and expansive in appearance, it still had its normal coloration, except for white pupils. It had three pointed horns, the middle of which is longer than the rest of its skull. Its shorter snout had larger fangs and a ridge on the nose. Its neck was shorter and its hands are much smaller, but its torso and legs were longer. Small wings develop on its wrists, while the ones on its back become larger and now have ragged edges. The back of its tail had a large thorn at the base and three smaller ones near the tip, which then burned with a longer flame.
"Groaww!" Charizard roared louder than he had ever roared before. Ash couldn't believe what had happened to his Charizard. He knew that Charizard couldn't evolve normally past Charizard, so the only explenation he could think of was that Charizard had mega evolved.
"I can't believe it, Charizard you Mega evolved!" Ash said.
"Mega evolution! We have to get that Charizard now. Noivern used Air slash, Salamence use Dragon breath".
"Charizard fly up and use Flamethrower!" Charizard flew forward and up faster than any pokemon Ash had ever seen before. The two Noivern tried to follow him as Slamance's Dragons breath missed its mark by a lot. Charizard flew in close towards one of the Noivern. Ash noticed that since Charizard Mega evolved the sun had gotten much harsher.
Charizard opened his mouth and unleashed the largest and most powerful Flamethrower Ash had ever seen. The flames completely engulfed Noivern and left him covered in soot. The Noivern fell to the ground unconscious ,leaving the other two dragons riddled in fear.
"Show some dam backbone. Dragon pulse and Dragon breath".
"Charizard evasive maneuvers into Flamethrower!" Ash said. Charizard quickly did several quick and sharp turns easily avoiding the Dragon pulse and Dragon breath. Once he got close enough he engulfed the second Noivern in fire, knocking him out.
"Grrr I won't be beaten by some twerp! Salamence Hyperbeam!"Duncan roared.
"Charizard Fly above him and use Inferno!". Charizard flew up higher as Salamence unleashed Hyperbeam. Charizard's tail flame grew massive as he roared. Charizard unleashed a Maelstrom of fire that caused Ash to be drenched in sweat from where he was sitting.
"Yahh!" Duncan said as he saw the fire fly at him. He jumped off his Salamence and fell into the water below. After the Inferno hit Salamence it easily knocked him out and sent him flying into the sand next to the Noivern.
"We did it Charizard, we beat them" Ash looked at the water for a minute but couldn't see Duncan anywhere.
"I guess he got a way, or drowned" Ash said. Charizard flew down and landed on the beach, allowing Ash to get off him. Moments later Ash saw Charizard get smaller and revet back to his normal form.
"I guess Mega evolution is only temporary" Ash said. Charizard looked a little disappointed that he didn't get to stay that way.
"Charizard thank you for saving me, you just dove right into the water like that, even with your flame body you" Ash started before Charizard opened his mouth and blasted Ash with a small Flamethrower. Ash coughed some soot out.
"Why would you do that?" Charizard chucked a little, then tackled Ash to the ground and started licking his face.
"Ha ha Charizard!" Ash said as his pokemon kept licking. Ash eventually got up and hugged his pokemon, as Charizard hugged back.
"I'm just so glad we're friends again" He said as a tear came down his right eye.
"Groau!" Charizard growled back. Back on route ten Red was riding his Charizard as they searched for Ash and his Charizard.
"Ash! Charizard!", "Pika Pikachu!" Pikachu shouted. After a few more minutes Charizard set down next to the others who were searching on the ground.
"Ash! Charizard!" Serena shouted.
"Come on guys where are you!" Clemont shouted. Serena noticed Red and his Charizard land.
"Still no sign?".
"No" , "Pika", Charizard shook his head.
"Oh come on , we just have to keep looking!" Serena said.
"Hey maybe that trainer riding that Charizard has seen them" Bonnie said pointing to a Charizard in the air.
"Charizard!" Red , Serena , and Clemont shouted. They all looked up and saw a Charizard flying towards them with a trainer on his back.
"Could that be!?" Serena said trying to look closer. The Charizard landed and smiled at the group as Ash got off his back.
"There you guys are, we've been looking for you for almost" Ash started before Serena sprinted over and nearly tackled him to the ground. Serena pressed her lips against his for nearly a minute before he could say another word. When she finally got off him she still kept her arms locked around him so tight he could nearly breath. Pikachu sprinted over and climbed onto Ash's shoulder.
"Ash! You're safe! Where were you though!? Do you know how worried we were about you!".
"Yeah bro, why were you gone all night?" Red said. Pikachu didn't care much he simply nudged his head against Ash's head saying "Pika Pika!".
"Yeah sorry we were gone so long. You wouldn't believe what happened to us" Ash said as he and Charizard sweat-dropped. Ash explained everything that happened since he left, leaving the others in disbelief.
"So Charizard Mega evolved to beat Duncan!" Serena said.
"That's right, I don't know how he did it exactly. But I know it had something to do with our high level of friendship" Ash said as Charizard lowered his head ,blasted Ash with a small Flamethrower. Pikachu quickly jumped off of Ash's shoulder as the others watched in horror.
"Ash are you ok!?" Serena said. Ash coughed as Charizard laughed a little before giving Ash a lick on the side of his face.
"It's just something he likes to do now" Ash said.
"Well I'm just glad he's listening to you again" Red said.
"Yeah it's so good to see you two being friend again" Serena said.
"Pika Pikachu" Pikachu said nodding. Ash's Charizard turned over to Braixen who was out and next to Serena. Braixen looked relieved to see Charizard was ok , but when he looked at her she quickly turned her head and gave him the cold shoulder.
Charizard seemed a bit embarrassed realizing how he treated her yesterday. Red's Charizard walked over and patted him on the back and growling something to him.
"Well now that we're all together again, how about we continue on to Geosenge Town?" Red said.
"Sounds good lets go!" Ash said running ahead with Red and Serena close behind. The two Charizards flew up and over their trainers as Bonnie ran forward with Clemont trying to catch up.
"Come on guys! Wait up!".
Yup that's it, I knew some of you wanted Charizard to be disobedient while others begged me for him not to be. This solution just seemed brilliant to me, just have Charizard be disobedient for one chapter and one chapter only.
We've also seen Charizard Mega evolve into Charizard Y, sorry if you wanted him to be X but Ash get's Y. Keep in mind that there's another main character with another Charizard with another Mega evolution stone :).
