Beast Boy stood at the edge of the flower scenery. His ears detected many different noises but that wasn't where his eyes were located. There at the very back of the store he saw two very familiar females and both were wearing the most beautiful dresses he has ever seen. Behind him he could hear the arguing of his two close friends over directions of the next place they were headed. He could feel the kitten purr next to his ear as it slept on his shoulder. His eyes stared at the girl in the violet dress and watched her speak to Starfire, but they were way too far away to hear what they exchanged.
"I wonder why you never had a valentine, you're so beautiful..." Beast Boy said quietly
"Beast Boy, please tell this spikey gel lover that the bakery is on the west side." Cyborg suddenly boomed in his ears.
"No, it is on the east last time when I was here, and shops don't exactly stand up and walk away." Robin countered, pointing toward the direction he felt was correct.
Beast Boy glanced at his buds and shook his head, he looked back at where the girls were located then glanced back toward his friends and replied, "why don't we just try both sides dudes, were bound to find it sooner or later."
The two boys glanced at each other with a shrug and dueled it out with an intense game of rock, paper, scissors. Cyborg came out as the victor and the group of three took a left down the walkway.
Soon Cyborg fell behind, walking next to Beast Boy, their leader speaking to himself up front; "It has to be the biggest cake-with pink sparkles and…"
His friend shook his head listening to Robin going over the perfect gift for the alien princess. Cyborg watched Beast Boy barely dodge a couple who raced toward one another for a hug. He jabbed his little buddy in the side and smirked, "put me out of my misery if I ever get that far…"
Beast Boy looked up at Robin who was continually arguing with himself, "No! Violet would be a much better color…"
Beast Boy laughed, "I'm sure you won't turn into that-but bro's honor. I got your back dude."
Cyborg smiled and ruffled his hair, "thanks little buddy…oh…oh what is that I see? What is that?"
The three titans slowed down as the bakery sign came into sight and Cyborg boomed, "What did I say? What did I tell you spikey? Pay up I win."
Robin shook his head seeing the sign, "But I swore it was on the East side…ah ha! Look at the sign, 'We have just moved'; looks like they WERE on the east side till recently."
Cyborg shook his head, "Doesn't matter, they are here now, so I still win."
Beast Boy sighed and walked past his two friends and pushed his way into the store, the smell of bread and baked goods reaching his senses. He found a table nearby and sat down, lowering his head and closing his eyes; waiting on his friends to come inside.
"Would you like to try our newest tea sample?"
Beast Boy looked up hearing a female voice and saw a young woman with dark hair standing with a hot cup in her hands that she was offering him, when she smiled, "You're Beast Boy aren't you?"
Beast Boy nodded and joked, "What gave it away? My skin or my fangs?"
The woman laughed, "I suppose you're right, I'm sorry."
Beast Boy waved his hand, "Not a problem, I was just joking." He heard the voices of his companions still outside the door arguing and sighed. She smiled apologetically, "rough day?"
Beast Boy laughed, "Tell me about it…" He looked up at the cup she was holding and continued, "so a new tea huh? I thought this was a bakery?"
The woman beamed, "It is, I just started a co-business with the owner, they sell the baked goods and I create new hot drinks every month. Today's is lavender jasmine for the special day of course!"
Beast Boy nodded and she offered again, "It would be an honor if a hero would taste it and tell me how it is…?"
Beast Boy laughed, "I'm no hero, I don't think; but sure I'll try it."
The woman handed it over and replied, "of course you are, anyone who puts their life down for another, is a hero in my eyes."
Beast Boy felt a wave of pride hit him, he never thought of it that way and tried the tea. Honestly he was never a big tea person, maybe because every chance he would try it, Raven would steal it away. But it always smelled good and to his surprise it actually was good. It smelled calming and realized that a certain someone would probably really enjoy this more than he would.
I know you act like that because you feel alone, maybe this will cheer you up? And if you don't like it, I'll keep it for myself!
"Wow that's really good actually!" Beast Boy exclaimed to the woman who beamed with happiness. "Would you like to buy a bag? It's ten dollars on special for just today."
Beast Boy nodded and dug out a 10 dollar bill, handing her the cash. The woman smiled and walked back to her counter. Beast Boy was about to get up when two red eyes suddenly popped up from under the table with a toothy grin.
"Hi Stranger!"
Beast Boy let out a yell of surprise and toppled off his chair. The little boy who looked to be about 7 or 8 started to giggle and he sat up, giving him a better look. The kid had white skin, black pants, black shirt and a black cape on and to match it all he even had black hair. He was holding a red pen in one hand and some pink paper in the other.
"You're a teen titan! I like you a lot."
Beast Boy smiled and found his seat, feeling goose bumps with the boy staring at him, "kid you really scared me-what are you doing here by yourself, where are your parents?"
The kid smiled and pointed behind him before continuing, "I found you! So can you do me a big, big favor?"
Beast Boy blinked and watched as he stood on his toes and slapped a piece of pink paper in the shape of a heart and the pen on the table. "Can you pweeez write a love note for me?"
Beast Boy stared at the kid who definitely had red eyes, it actually spooked him a little. But what he asked of Beast Boy startled him even more, "Wait, you want me to do what little dude?"
"A love note!" The kid grabbed at his cape and twisted it for a moment, "For that girl over there…with the pony tails…"
Beast Boy looked up at the girl in the corner, she was eating a donut with what looked to be her father. Beast Boy smiled and ruffled the kid's hair, "how come you don't want to?"
The kid blinked and replied, "I can't write yet!" Beast Boy laughed, "Well… why do you want me to?"
The little boy huffed at all the questions, "CAUSE you're her favorite teen titan! Duh!"
"Ok, ok, what do you want me to write then?" Beast Boy picked up the pen and looked at the little boy who bit his lip and twirled around, "I dunno…I guess you have pretty eyes and a pretty smile."
Beast Boy laughed, "Is that it?"
"No! Help me stranger I don't know!"
Beast Boy laughed, "why do you call me that?"
"Call you what?"
"Stranger."
"I call everyone that!" He piped up and Beast Boy shook his head feeling something familiar about his voice then continued, "Ok well how about this? Roses are Red, Violets are blue; you have pretty eyes and a great smile too. It's short, sweet and it sounds like a kid could write it."
The little boy stood on his toes and watched him write and nodded, "yeah I like it!"
"Now I just need a signature, what's your name little dude?"
"I'm Shadow!" He cried out, sticking out his chest with a smile. He watched the kid turn and flap his cape twice, like he was pretending it waved in the wind like a super hero.
"Cody!" Beast Boy looked up to see the same woman return with his bag of tea heading his way, "how many times have I told you to not bug the customers, I am so sorry Beast Boy. He's a fast one."
Beast Boy smiled and waved it off, "it's not a problem, little dude here just wanted me to write his crush a letter."
"Hey! It's not a crush!" Cody shouted in defense and his mother smiled, "oh yes, little Lindsey, she is adorable. He's been trying to talk to her for days, she's the baker's daughter who I cowork with." She paused then smiled, "she's going to get a big surprise later-her mother is coming back in town today."
Cody looked up and his mother sighed, "The red eye contacts again? Cody, what have I told you? You're going to scare someone to death one day." She shook her head, "I don't know why your father bought you those."
"Sorry momma." Cody mumbled. The woman shook her head, "never mind that, leave this poor teen titan alone."
Beast Boy laughed, "He wasn't much trouble, and kids come to me naturally anyway." He gratefully took the bag and the woman replied, "Well that is a blessing and a curse I suppose."
Beast Boy laughed and heard the door open, his two teammates entering the shop as well. Cody reached up and snatched the letter, staring at what Beast Boy wrote then looked up and stared at him.
"What is it bud?" Beast Boy asked and the little kid bit his lip, "you forgot to sign it!"
Beast Boy laughed, "Fine, fine here." He took the letter, signed his name and wrote something small in it and gave it back to him. The little boy glanced at it, trying to figure it out then shrugged and raced over toward the little girl and her family.
"Thanks, he's been going through a rough time these past few weeks."
Beast Boy looked up at the woman who sighed, "Losing a father isn't easy." She gave a small smile and turned around to get more samples for the people walking into the store. Soon he heard Robin's voice above the others in the front of the counter, "no, no, no it has to be twice as big with pink not yellow. No, that can't work at all…no that's too girly, not girly enough…"
Beast Boy stood up from his seat and sauntered over toward the duo, he felt the kitten who was sleeping on his shoulder the whole time move as he walked; Cyborg stood behind the leader shaking his head. The baker was on the other side, showing Robin some possible options.
"No. Yee…no…who do you think she is?"
"I'm sorry Robin that is all we have in stock, today is a very busy day and we are running out very fast."
Robin shook his head, "No matter, it isn't your fault; I will just have to think of something else. Perhaps something not edible…I wouldn't want her to hate it."
"Perhaps some cookies to go mister?" Robin looked down at a little girl with pigtails who stood half his height, holding up a box of cookies. Robin considered it, "No that isn't what she would like either."
The little girl looked down and Cyborg stepped in, "actually I'll take the whole box little lady."
The little girl looked up in awe then smiled as Cyborg exchanged the cash and she ran to her father behind the counter. Beast Boy saw a flash of black run by and watched as Cody found his way in front of the little girl who sold the cookies and closed his eyes, handing her the note.
"Alright team lets head out." Robin announced as Cyborg grumbled about him going overboard with the whole Valentine's Day deal and what he was going to do with 30 cookies.
Beast Boy found himself walking out the door and as he did, he saw the little girl take the note and read it. She giggled and gave him a hug; but that was all he saw before the door closed behind him and they were back in the bustling walkway of the Jump City Mall.
