"You know what? I'll get her a balloon, a huge one… where it will overshadow the tower and it'll say 'Starfire, will you be my girlfriend'?"
"Man are you going to ask her out or ask for her hand in marriage?" Cyborg moaned as the three boys passed by another tent filled with teddy bears, cards and flowers. Robin's eyes glazed over the valentine's trinkets then back toward his friend, "I know, I know… I'm probably going overboard with this… I can't help it, I just want to... you know, blow her mind or something."
Beast Boy and Cyborg exchanged glances before speaking up, "you know we've been in 10 shops and you haven't bought a single thing; look it's already past 1 o'clock, can we just figure something out...Oh hey what about this place?"
Robin paused, looking to where Cyborg was pointing and he continued, "every girl likes stuffed animals-besides have you seen Star's room? It's filled with them!"
Robin gave the store a thought and nodded, "Cyborg, I think you are onto something. Yes. This….this is exactly what she would want!"
Cyborg rolled his eyes and glanced to his left where Beast Boy stood quietly, the little kitten was in his arms, batting at a shoe string he had found on a bench outside a shoe store. At the corner of his eye he watched Robin step toward the store and both he and Beast Boy followed inside until a woman who was pulling a stuffed animal on a leash stopped them.
"Welcome Teen Titans! I much say it is nice to see you all in one day!" The boys glanced at each other in confusion for a moment before she continued, "But I'm afraid that little guy is not allowed in the store, I hope you can all understand."
Robin and Cyborg looked to where she pointed toward Beast Boy and the kitten and Cyborg suddenly got an idea.
"Ok, not a problem, BB and I will just wait for ya out here and-"
"No!" Robin suddenly exclaimed.
"-we will, wait no? Why not man?"
Robin shook his head, "I don't want to be the only one in…there." The boys all glanced inside the build a buddy, seeing a little kid screaming at the stuffing department because his panda was overstuffed. "I just need one of you, for advice and such…"
The two boys glanced at one another and Cyborg sighed, "Ok, here give me the kitten Beast Boy, I've been wanting to check out the auto shop down the way anyway."
Beast Boy's eyes grew, "What? Dude, he's mine! He's like my kid, you can't strip us apart, he's so young…"
"Beast Boy you've only had him for like…an hour or two."
Beast Boy stared at the kitten sleeping in his arms, "It's felt like days…"
"Yeah love can do that to you, you crazy bean. Come on just give me the cat."
Beast Boy stared at the little ball of fur before reluctantly giving his friend the little kitten. Cyborg held him with a smirk and he replied, "Good luck with Mr. Obsessive," and turned around to head to another part of the mall. Beast Boy watched the back of his friend disappear and he looked up to see that Robin had went inside Build a Buddy already. Blinking, Beast Boy followed him in, gazing at all the plush toys on the shelves and to his amusement, he a few teenagers crowding around the buckets. He watched a couple take out an elephant, the girl who looked to be about 17 smiled with bliss. Beast Boy walked over toward his leader who had his eyes on the various bears at the time and his own eyes laid on a sign that read, "toothless". Excitement perked inside the changeling and he looked in the bucket, but to his disappointment, they were all gone.
"No…the pink is too much, she will think that I think it's the only color she likes….but brown is too much like a male…"
Beast Boy looked up, disappointment quickly fading away and looked toward Robin who was holding up a pink and brown rabbit in each hand.
"Dude you are way overthinking this."
Robin dropped the rabbits and turned to him, grabbing his shoulders, and startling Beast Boy for a second as Robin exclaimed, "I can't decide anything, it has to be perfect."
"Ohh-kay. Well…why don't you just start at step one and we'll figure it out from there?" Beast Boy replied, shaking off his leader until they stood a few inches apart again.
"Yeah…yeah that's a great idea, step one is…" Robin is looking around in confusion and Beast Boy interrupted his train of thought, "picking out an animal?"
"Yes! Duh, of course…man I just can't think today."
Beast Boy smirked, "Chill dude, if I know Starfire well enough, she's going to love it, even if it's the most hideous thing you can find."
Robin paused and glanced at his teammate, "You think so?"
"Dude I know so. Have you seen her cooking, her color taste, or even silkie? They aren't all considered normal in my book." He chuckled, "though silkie was sort of my fault."
Robin sighed and Beast Boy saw him let off a load of stress, "You're right, thank you Beast Boy-that actually did make me feel a lot better." He paused, "But I still want to give her something special, something she will truly love…"
Beast Boy shrugged, "just do what you think is best, you know her the best out of us all anyway."
Robin nodded and smiled, "Yeah I do, don't I?"
"So don't freak, I mean; if you're so worried you can like…do a movie night or something too... or get a blanket and watch the stars…or go walk in the park…" he fell quiet as Robin just stared at him.
"Wow, Cyborg is right, you are a hopeless romantic."
"Hey! I'm just trying to help." Beast Boy countered.
Robin laughed, "Don't take it the wrong way, it's nice since neither Cyborg nor I think that way. I think they are really good ideas Beast Boy-too bad you don't have anyone to share it with…" he drifted off then glanced at his green teammate, "do you?"
Beast Boy laughed and rubbed the side of his arm, "Nah dude…the ladies just can't handle all…this. So many were asking I had to turn them all down."
He smiled and Robin frowned, he saw right through his lie. The team leader sighed and put down the plush he was considering, "You know there is someone I know, who likes you. So don't give up hope ok?"
"Wait, what did you say?" Beast Boy blurted out, his leader had a tint in his eye staring at the younger titan.
"Oh, nothing."
"Dude you can't just say that and then not say anything else about it." Beast Boy cried out.
Robin shook his head, "It's not a matter I wish to get myself into, besides it's something you should find out on your own."
Beast Boy huffed and crossed his arms, "was it that girl that I talked to the other day when we were given interviews? She was cute."
Robin shook his head and exasperation, "I'm not telling you anything bud, sorry."
"Kill joy."
"I know, I'm good at that." Robin replied with a smirk.
"Hi welcome to Build a Buddy, where you can make your buddy come to life!" The two males stopped where they were and glanced at the man who stood nearby. He wore khakis and a bright red shirt that read: 'Hugs for everyone'. He was staring at them with a smile that could melt butter.
"Aren't you guys adorable, come here I need a hug!"
Neither Beast Boy nor Robin was prepared for the crushing hug of a stranger. Both titans struggled to pulled apart until they were released, catching their breath from the sudden encounter. Robin was about to speak when the worker continued, "It's always nice to see couples like you come in time to time."
Both Robin and Beast Boy stopped in their tracks, they looked at one another before taking about three steps apart equally. Robin and Beast Boy both bringing up their hands in defense shouting out, "Whoa dude," and "Hold up!"
The clerk glanced at them each in turn and Beast Boy exclaimed first, "Ok first of all he is my teammate and second of all we are NOT dating!"
Robin shook his head in agreement, "Yeah I'm here to get Starfire something as a surprise."
"Oh…oh my. I am terribly sorry. You two just looked to have so much chemistry talking with one another-I had thought. I am truly sorry Titans." The worker bowed his head in embarrassment.
Beast Boy slapped his face with his hand and Robin shook his head, "No…nope nothing is going on, I promise-just…let's forget about this whole thing and start all over?"
The clerk smiled and nodded, "Yes that would be great-so Starfire huh? I have some wonderful ideas if you will hear me out."
Beast Boy watched Robin agree and stood nearby as he picked himself out a kitten with colorful fur. When Robin turned around to ask of his opinion, Beast Boy just nodded and he watched quietly as he stuffed the cat. Beast Boy could hear his teammate from where he stood, "and I want the strawberry scent with a sound too." Beast Boy shook his head with a laugh, the poor guy was putting everything possible in that stuffed animal. He watched him go through the whole heart routine next to the couple he saw earlier when he first walked in. Beast Boy stole a glance at the girl who stood in front of her boyfriend, filling up the stuffing with a laugh. He let out a sigh and looked up at the other stuffed animals people had a chance to choose. That's when something very familiar caught his eye. Beast Boy stared at the animal, blinking. He smiled, thinking of a memory he has kept secret for a long time. Looking up he noticed Robin had finished and was in the outfit section for the plush animals and Beast Boy took a couple steps toward him.
Robin saw him come his way with a glance and stated, "Check it out Beast Boy, they have all our uniforms."
Beast Boy looked up and to his surprise, Robin was right; "Oh shiz, that is really cool. Look, there is a bear dressed up as me, how cool is that?"
Robin smirked, "Very-but the Robin bunny over there dominates all."
Soon the leader was in one of his notable decision making trances and Beast Boy took that opportunity to slip away back toward the stuffed animal location. After a few minutes and some awkward conversations he stole a quick glance toward Robin who was currently in the corner of the room looking at the extra accessories. Beast Boy took that moment to quickly grab an outfit from the back and slipped to the computers to type up a name and check out. The lady at the front smiled, handing him the bag and receipt. Looking back, Beast Boy mentally wanted to slap himself silly. The team leader has yet to leave the outfit section during all that time. Shaking his head he pushed past a few people to where a mass of kids stood trying to get to the outfits but with all the pacing Robin was doing, they were unable to grab but one or two at a time.
Beast Boy looked at the four girls and boys standing, annoyed expressions on their face, and he gave an apologetic look to the mothers nearby.
He heard his leader talking again as he came closer, "Should I get one of Starfire's or of mine…no I couldn't do mine…It would look too conceited. I wouldn't want her to think I was only thinking of myself…but what if she didn't want to have a cat that looked like her? What if-"
"Duuuude, you're doing it again. Relax, just pick what you think she'll like, you're driving me crazy." Beast Boy moaned.
Robin glanced at him and swallowed, picking out the outfit he liked the most and smirked, "I guess today is opposite day huh?"
"I guess so!" Beast Boy laughed then watched the leader head toward the computers to create a certificate for the animal and reached the checkout. When they were waiting on the receipt, Beast Boy leaned in toward Robin and with a serious tone and whispered, "Let's not do this again…" Robin nodded and replied, "yeah, next time the 'mistake of couples' will be in the newspaper…that would go over great with Starfire." Beast Boy laughed, "Shit, Raven would be laughing for a week, and I don't even want to think of what Cyborg would do." Both the boys shuddered at the cash register, checking out the items and leaving the store with equal hidden uncertainty.
