chapter 49: A large scale battle
It was early in the morning in Anistar city Pokemon center. The group was already up and having breakfast.
"Ok I think I've made my decision" Red said.
"Have you?" Ash said.
"Yes I'm using Skarmory and TalonFlame" Red said.
"You haven't used Talonflame in a while" Clemont said.
"That's why I'm using him" Red said.
"I can't wait to see you take down that overconfident little know it all" Korrina said.
"You really don't like her do you" Serena said sweat dropping.
"When someone degrades your abilities as a trainer and the type of pokemon you devote yourself to, you'd have a problem with them too!" Korrina said as she got up and put her hands on the table, making the rest of the group sweat drop with Serena.
"So Ash you said you're going to use Lucario and Mightyena right?" Serena said.
"Yup, those two have been training very hard since the last gym battle. They're more than ready" Ash said.
"Yes! Use your Lucario ! Beat her with him!" Korrina said.
"You know Korrina , Olympia isn't as bad as you make her sound to be" Clemont said before Korrina turned to Red and gave him a long and scary looking glare.
"Uh well, she's not" Clemont said nervously.
"Well I'm finished , want to head over to the gym" Red said as he got behind his girlfriend and put his arms on her shoulders.
"Right" Ash said. A few minutes later the group made their way across the streets to the gym. The gym exterior seemed similar to many of the other gyms, however, when they got inside the main entrance seemed much like a bedroom.
"Another bedroom themed gym?" Serena said with little enthusiasm.
"I guess so" Ash said as they walked in further. After stepping onto the camera the bedroom quickly changed its form.
"What the?" Clemont said as the walls changed into what looked like an expanse of space.
"Huh?" Red said as they saw they were now on a yellow glass pathway.
" She does stuff like this " Korrina said.
"Where is she?" Red said.
"I'm everywhere, and nowhere" A voice said.
"Huh?" Serena said.
"Oh no" Korrina said. They turned around and looked up to see a woman standing on another yellow glass platform above them. The woman had dark skin, purple hair, and periwinkle eyes. She wore a black jumpsuit with a star field colored cape inside and white outside.
"I am Olympia, the Anistar city gym leader. You must be challengers here to" Olympia started before she saw Korrina among the group.
"Well well well, look who's here. Come to learn the real way to be a gym leader" . A red plus sign of anger appeared on Korrina's head.
"I don't need to hear anything from you Olympia! I'm only here to watch you get beaten by these two" Korrina said.
"Hmm" Olympia looked down at at Ash and Red.
"So you are challengers. Excellent, please follow my students to the battlefield" Olympia said before she waved her cape over herself and vanished.
"How did she do that?" Serena said.
"It's called an optical illusion. She's still there" Korrina said as Olympia sweat dropped a little behind her cover. A pair of young men appeared behind the group. Both were wearing the same black jumpsuits as Olympia.
"This way to the battlefield" One of them said. The group followed the young men to a large yellow glass battlefield. Olympia was already on the other side of the battlefield.
"Who will I be facing first?" Olympia said.
"We won last night, that means I get to go first" Ash said.
"Alright fine" Red said. Ash stepped onto the other side of the battlefield as the rest of the group stood on the sidelines.
"Beat her Ash! Beat her good!" Korrina shouted with enthusiasm.
"I don't need to hear it from you Korrina, I proved that your battle style is worthless" Oylmpia said.
"Worthless!" Korrina said.
"Hey her battle style is about the same as ours" Red said defensively.
"What? Ohh no, not another two weak trainers. This will hardly prove a challenge" Olympia said in a disappointed tone.
"Excuse me?" Serena said in an angry tone.
"How dare you judge us as trainers when you haven't even seen us in battle" Ash said.
"I don't need to, anyone who battles like Korrina can't be a challenge. Though perhaps there is a way I could get a challenge out of this. If I were to face both of you at once then maybe".
"You want to face both of us alone?" Red said.
"I will of course be using 4 pokemon while you two will be allowed 2 each".
"Red what do you think?".
"I say we show her what trainers like us are capable of" Red said.
"Yes beat her into the ground so far she won't know which way is up!" Korrina shouted.
"Korrina I think you need to calm down" Serena said.
"What I'm calm. I'm very calm!" Korrina said as the others sweat dropped.
"The battle between gym leader Olympia and challengers Ash Ketchum and Red Ketchum is about to begin" One of Olympia's students said as he stood as the ref.
"Trainers choose your pokemon" Olymia's student said.
"Alright I choose you! Mightyna, Lucario!" Ash's Lucario came out of his pokeball and took an offensive stance. At the same time Mightyena came out and also took an offensive stance.
"H'mm a fighting type and a dark type, such savage and undisciplined pokemon types. It adds up" Olympia said.
"Alright I choose you Skarmory, Talonflame". Skarmory and Talonflame both came out with harsh determination as they flew above their trainer.
"Flying, steel and fire, a bit better than the other ones. But still a bit disappointing" Olympia said.
"Our pokemon are more than capable of beating you!" Red shouted.
"Very well, I shall show you how true pokemon battle. Go Meiwstic, Slowking,Grumpig, and Sigilyph" Olympia said as her pokemon came out.
"What are those?" Serena said opening her pokedex.
"Slowking, the Royal Pokémon. Slowking possess great knowledge and inspiration, and are known for maintaining a level head in any circumstances.".
"Meowstic the Constraint pokemon. The eyeball patterns on the interior of its ears emit psychic energy. It keeps the patterns tightly covered because that power is too immense."
"Sigilyph, the Avianoid Pokémon. Sigilyph keeps enemies from invading its territory with its Psychic powers and was the guardian of cities long ago."
"Grumpig uses the black pearls on its body to amplify its psychic power waves for gaining total control over its foe. When this Pokémon uses its special power, its snorting breath grows labored."
"Let us begin Meowstic use Light screen" Meowstics eyes glowed red as she began waving her paws in front of herself. Moments later several clear screens began appearing not in front of her, but around the battlefield.
"What is she doing, that won't help her pokemon?" Clemont asked.
"Maybe it will" Serena said.
"Now Slowking use Psybeam".
"Dodge it!" Ash shouted. Slowking's eyes glowed red for a moment before he unleashed a beam of red psychic energy at his opponents. Just before it could hit Lucario and Mightyena, they both avoided the attack with great speed and agility.
However, neither Olympia nor her pokemon seemed disappointed that the attack missed its mark. That was when Ash saw the Psybeam hit one of the light screens behind his pokemon and reflect back at them.
"That's what those screens were for! Lucario behind you!" Lucario didn't even turn around. He simply dropped to the ground as the Psybeam narrowly went over him. As the attack continued forward towards Slowking he caught and redirected his attack in two directions. Both hit a screen and reflected back at Ash's pokemon.
"So those screens are a means to reflecting her psychic attacks, genius" Serena said.
"No it's called being cheap. A real pokemon rely's on his own strength and skills rather than some augmentations to the battlefield" Korrina said with her arms crossed.
"Talonflame, Skarmory get up higher!" Red shouted. Both birds quickly took off and soared above the screens around them.
"No you don't, Sigilyph use Light screen , Grumpig use Psychic with Power gem!". Sigilyph's eyes glowed red as he formed several clear screens around the two birds in the air. The screens showed their reflections making it hard for them to see where they were and where their opponents were.
At the same time Grumpig unleashed a barrage of red gems at them.
"Skarmory use Steel wings, Talonflame come in from behind and use Flame charge!". Skarmory tried to find the right Gems but the reflections from the screens made it hard to differentiate which ones were real. After one hit him, Skarmory immediately turned in that directions and began smashing the gems away with his wings.
After the last few gems were knocked away, Talonflame dove down at a sharp angle towards Grumpig.
"Psychic!". Grumpig and Sigilyph both caught Talonflame with their psychic powers.
"OH no" Red said. Talonflame was hurled back and smashed into Skarmory. Meanwhile on the ground, Mightyena and Lucario were quickly as the Psybeam continued to reflect itself off the Light screens.
That was when Ash remembered that Psychic attacks would have no effect on Mightyena. Through their aura connection, Mightyena felt Ash wanted her to intercept the beam with her body. Mightyena was confused , but she trusted Ash and did as he said, jumping right in front of the Psybeam.
"What is she doing!?" Serena said. When the Psybeam hit Mightyena nothing happened. Mightyena looked completely unharmed.
"What?" Bonnie said.
"Psychic moves don't work on Dark types, that was very smart of Ash" Korrina said.
"Slowking use Psybeam, Meowstic use Signal beam" Meowstic and Slowking both unleashed their attacks at the Light screens, causing them to reflect.
"Meowstic Signal beam at the other screens, you too Slowking". Meowstic and Slowking both unleashed their attacks at the screens around Red's pokemon, making them reflect in the air.
"Talonflame! Skarmory get lower!". Both pokemon flew in lower as the Signal beam and Psybeam quickly bounced around them.
"Shoot them down Grumpig use Power gem, Sigilyph, Slowking use Psychic". As Talonflame and Skarmory flew closer to the ground they were both caught in Psychic and held in place.
"Uh Ash help!" Red shouted.
"Mightyena stop them, use Crunch!". Mightyena sprinted at Sigilyph and Slowking, dodged the signal beam every time it came by her, and resisting any Psybeam.
"Double team!" Just before Mightyena could reach her targets, they both made a dozen copies of themselves. Mightyena went right through two of the copies and soon got a headache when she saw all of the copies also had reflections.
"Red's Pokemon!" Serena shouted as she saw the Power gems about to hit.
"Lucario Stone edge!" Lucario quickly smashed his paws into the ground and came back up with a dozen or so spiked rocks. He then unleashed the up and into the air , intercepting the power gems just before they reached Red's pokemon.
"Whew, that was close. Thanks Ash, Lucario". Lucario didn't have much time to accept the gratitude as he quickly needed to continue moving to avoid the Psybeams that continued to get reflected off the Light Screens.
"We need to get rid of those copies. Skamory come in low with Steel wing, Talonflame come in high with Flame Charge!".
"Mightyena stay under Skarmory, it one of them tries to catch him with Psychic get in the path so their Psychic energy won't work!. Lucario you stay under Talonflame and protect him from any Power gems" Ash said.
Lucario did his best to continue avoiding the incoming Psybeams as he ran directly under Talonflame. At the same time Mightyena ran under Skarmory as the metal bird tore through dozens of copies.
"Stop them!, Use Signalbeam and Psybeam!". Meowstic unleashed Signal beam as the other 3 unleashed Psybeams.
"Skarmory cover Mightyena , Talonflame come in lower and help Lucario get up". Just before the Signal beam could hit Mightyena , Skarmory flew down and covered Mightyena with her with his wings. The Signal beam bounced harmlessly off Skamory's wings as soon as it made contact.
At the same time 3 Psybeams were all converging on Lucario. Talonflame extinguished the fire on his body and flew directly under Lucario. Lucario leapt up and onto Talonflame's back. Talonflame was able to lift Lucario high enough up so that Lucario could leap up and over the 3 Psybeams.
"Great work Red" Ash said as their pokemon continued to clear away the copies. As the copies began to vanish , the reflections of them disappeared too.
"Alright there's the real ones, Mightyena use Crunch, Lucario use Extremespeed".
"Talonflame Flamecharge, Skamory Arial ace". All 4 of the pokemon quickly converged on their opponents with incredible speed.
"This is it!" Korrina said excited. Unfortunately, Ash and Pikachu didn't see any fear in Olympia's eyes.
"What?". As soon as the 4 pokemon made contact, their opponents vanished into nothing.
"What?" Red said.
"More copies" Ash said. Just then the reflected Psybeam and Signal beam both converged on the 4 pokemon.
"Look out " Red shouted. Unfortunately it was too late, the 2 attacks smashed into the pokemon.
"Now use Power Gem and Psychic". Sigilyph and Grumpig quickly barraged the 4 pokemon with gemstones and Psychic energy before they could even get up.
"Guys!" Ash shouted.
"Oh no, she got them" Serena said.
"Now use Double team" Olympia said. Her pokemon quickly made more copies of themselves which were reflected by the screens. Ash's and Red's pokemon looked on with grim determination.
"This isn't working, she just keeps one step ahead of us" Red said.
"Now you see the pettiness of the way you battle, just raw power and brute strength is nothing. Only through control can you hope to achieve greatness" Olympia said.
"I really can't stand her" Korrina said with her fists tightening.
"What are we going to do? Everything we try something she just beats us to the mark" Ash thought to himself. Pikachu was also trying to think of something, that was when he remembered what Olympia said.
" Pika!" Pikachu said as he tried to tell Ash what he thought of. Ash then realized Pikachu was right, Olympia's strategy relied on her having control of everything. What they needed to do was take away that control and Ash knew just how to do it.
"Alright Olympia get ready to lose your control. Lucario shatter those screens". Lucario smashed his palms into the ground and came back up with a dozen spiked rocks. The other 3 pokemon ducked to the ground as Lucario unleashed the spiked rocks in every direction.
Some of the rocks tore through a few of the copies while the others hit and shattered the screens around them. As soon as the screens were broken all of the reflected copies vanished as well as the remaining copies.
"Alright great work Ash!" Red said.
"That was brilliant!" Serena said.
"Huh?" Olympia said.
"Alright lets keep up the momentum. Skarmory come in low and use Steel wing Talonflame come in high and use Flamecharge" Red said. Skarmory quickly flew in low with his metal wings out.
"Sigilyph use Psychic , catch him!". Sigilyph tried to catch Skarmory with his Psychic energy, but Skarmory no longer had to worry about reflected attacks or hitting the real opponent, thus he was able to keep moving and stay out of Sigilyph's grip and flew right past him, knocking Sigilyph into Grumpig.
At the same time Talonflame was easily able to avoid each of the incoming power Gems launched by Grumpig. After avoiding another two , TalonFlame flew in high and smashed his left wing against Grumpig's head , pushing him into Sigilyph again.
"Lucario Extremespeed, Mightyena follow close behind". Lucario rushed forward at Slowking and Meowstic.
"Stop him, Psychic!" Slowking and Meowstic both concentrated their Psychic energy and caught Lucario in their Psychic grasp.
"Now!" Ash shouted. Mightyena leapt clean over Lucario , much to her opponent's surprise.
"Crunch!".
"Moewstic look out!" Olympia shouted, but she was too late. Mightyena landed just in front of Meowstic and picked her up in her mighty jaws.
"No Meowstic!". Mightyena tightened her jaws down even more and knocked out Meowstic with the super effective attack.
"Lucario break free , use Power up punch!" Ash shouted.
Lucario gathered his aura energy and started glowing blue before, breaking free from Slowking's Psychic grasp and sprinted right into him. Lucario slammed his right fist into Slowking's face, doing little damage but did knock Slowking off balance.
"Again!" Ash shouted. Lucario kept the pressure on Slowking with continued Power up punches. Every time Slowking tried to recover Lucario used his martial art skills to keep him from gaining his focus. When Ash saw Lucario glowing red from all the increased attack power, he knew it was time.
"Stone Edge!". Just as Slowking turned his head back he was met with a barrage of spiked rocks that raked across his body, knocking him out.
"No!" Olympia shouted.
"Ha ha! Awsome way to go Lucario!" Serena shouted with much excitement.
"Skarmory come in and use Arial ace, Talonflame come in with Flare Blitz!" Talonflame quickly set himself ablaze again, only this time with a much bigger blaze. Both birds flew in at their opponents with great speed and momentum.
"Stop them!" Olympia shouted. Sigilygh tried to catch Skarmory in his Psychic grasp, but once again the metal bird was moving to quickly. At the same time Talonflame easily avoided each Power gem as it flew towards him.
"No!" Olympia shouted as Skarmory and Talonflame made contact with their opponents. When the confrontation was over the two birds were standing over their knocked out opponents.
"All four of leader Olympia's pokemon are unable to battle. The winners are the challengers" The ref said.
"Alright! We did it!" Red said.
"Grou!".
"Yena!".
"Squawk!". Skarmory was very impressed with how well they had battled together as a team and what they had been able to accomplish. For so long Skarmory thought that only if he did things himself could he accomplish anything, but now he had worked with the others and accomplished so much. It reminded him how happy he was to have found Red.
"They did it, they beat Olympia" Serena said excited.
"Yes! They beat that smug , overconfident, condescending little!" Korrina started.
"Korrina, take it easy" Clemont said. Olympia returned her pokeballs and gave a snotty look as she walked over to Ash and Red who had joined their pokemon.
"Don't think for a minute that just because you lucked your way into a fluke victory that I will think any better of your flawed and worthless battle style. Still you won, which means I am required to give you these" Olympia said as she handed them both their badges.
"Seven badges down, just one to go!" , "PIka!". Later that day at the pokemon center, Nurse Joy handed Ash and Red their pokeballs back.
"Your pokemon are in fine condition" Joy said.
"Thank you" Red said. They walked back towards the others at the table.
"I can't believe you two are only one gym badge away from the pokemon league" Korrina said.
"I know, we're so close I can almost taste it" Red said.
"Serena your tournament is tomorrow, if you win you'll be at the rank of Marchioness" Ash said.
"I know, but I'll need to win to do that. It certainly won't be easy, but" Serena started. That was when Korrina noticed Olympia walk into the pokemon center. Olympia gave Korrina a rather unimpressed look as she walked over to the counter.
Korrina wanted to be less upset about Olympia, especially since her boyfriend just beat her a battle. But she still felt irked by how she had failed to prove Olympia wrong about the way she had been trained to battle and the ways of fighting type pokemon.
"Welcome Ms. Olympia" Joy said as Olympia handed her the pokeballs.
"Will they be ready by tomorrow?" Olympia said.
"Yes".
"Good, I'll need them for the battle chateau tournament " Olympia said.
"The tournament, she's entering!?" Korrina thought to herself.
"So apparently this tournament is going to be a partner tournament. Each contestant has to tag battle with a partner of their choice. Whoever wins both trainers get the same amount of points.
"Partners!" Korrina thought to herself.
"So Ash, I was wondering if you'd" Serena started before Korrina rushed over to her.
"Serena! You and me will be partners in this tournament!" She shouted.
"What?" The others said.
"Yeah Olympia is entering, together we'll enter, make our way to the top and show her what we can do!" Korrina said.
"Uh, ok" Serena said almost nervously.
Author's note
Yeah I know this chapter was a bit shorter than usual but I have an excuse, almost a week ago I had the chapter basically ready until I decided to redo the battle which was most of the chapter. After that I got caught up in school work and other things.
As for the 4 on 4 battle, I realize it was a bit clustered, but It was something I wanted to try.
As for Olympia's partner in the next chapter I am willing to accept suggestions from you guys via PM. However, it must be someone from the X and Y games, it must be reasonable, not an elite 4 member, and it must be able to add up. If I don't get any I will probably just make up a character.
