Chapter 16

Tuesday:

Kurt and Blaine had been texting nonstop since their date. Kurt was angry at first because they had to leave the restaurant. But, he ended up having a magnificent time on the picnic. He figured that he would have to get used to non-public dates. Even when Blaine comes out as gay to everyone, he and Kurt will still have to hide away in order to avoid trouble. They didn't think anyone would really care to see two young men frolicking around on dates. Lima was not ready for that.

Kurt decided that Tuesday was his favorite day of the week (besides Friday, because Friday was Blaine day). He and Blaine had glee club every Tuesday, and he loved seeing Blaine for those extra hours of the day.

"You know what would be incredibly funny and/or cute?" Kurt said to Blaine as they took their seats in history.

"What?" Blaine asked.

"You wouldn't do it, though. It doesn't really matter," Kurt said.

"Just tell me what it is, Kurt. I'll probably do it if it's what you want," Blaine told him.

"Okay. I just think it would be kind of cute-ish if we sang a Taylor Swift song for glee club?" Kurt stated. His voice grew high towards the end, making it sound like a question.

"No way," Blaine said bluntly. Kurt laughed.

"Taylor Swift is like our thing! And, Schuester said it would be lovely to hear you and I do a duet because our voices would complement each other's," Kurt began to beg.

"Exactly, Kurt. T Swift is our thing. No one else needs to know of our love for her besides us," Blaine said.

"Ugh. I guess you're right," Kurt gave in.

Time passed by too quickly in the classes that the boys shared, and too slowly when they were separated. Blaine would write Kurt notes during Italian class and give them to him during lunch.

"Wrote you a note, again. I was bored," Blaine said as he sat down at the table. He threw it toward Kurt, who immediately began to read it as Blaine opened a granola bar.

Dear Kurt,

Hello, stranger. I'm sitting in Italian. I'm rather bored. We're listening to Italian people speak on an audio tape. I can't wait to get out of this class.

I also can't wait to see you. Especially during lunch, because lunch is great. I love food. Haha. Anyway, I'm excited for glee club today. I think I should squirt water on myself afterward though. My dad finds it suspicious that I don't look sweaty after "practice."

Uh oh. Gotta go, we're taking a pop quiz on the audio tape that we just listened to. You know, the one that I wasn't paying attention to.

I'll see you later.

-Blaine.

PS- Let's get coffee after Glee rehearsal. My dad will drop us off there. My treat.

There were doodles on the side. Hearts and infinity signs. Kurt lived for these notes, although he did not expect them every day, nor did he expect them to be long. They were sweet. He knew that at some point during his class, Blaine said to himself, I should get out of piece of paper and write a note to my boyfriend.

"Thanks Blaine," Kurt said as his eyes skimmed the note. "Yes, coffee sounds fantastic. I'll tell my dad not to pick me up from rehearsal," he responded to the suggestion in the note.

They sat in their usual place in lunch until Tina walked into the cafeteria.

"You two can sit at our table, you know. I need any sort of distraction from Rachel," she said to Kurt and Blaine.

"Oh, yeah. We were going to sit there, but we kept forgetting. Let's go," Blaine said, nudging Kurt. They both stood up with their bagged lunches in their hands and followed Tina to her table.

"Blaine and Kurt will sit with us from now on," Tina informed the group. Kurt sat down across from Mercedes, and Blaine sat next to Kurt. He felt like Kurt belonged there more than he did. He certainly did not mind sitting with his glee friends, but he was sure that they did not want him there.

The situation was awkward. But, he would do anything that made Kurt happier. Plus, sitting with four new friends was better than sitting by themselves, for the most part.

Kurt caught Rachel glancing at Blaine periodically. Blaine didn't notice, however. It seemed like Rachel was trying to catch his eye. Kurt tapped Blaine's foot twice to get Blaine's attention. Blaine looked over at him and raised his eyebrows. Kurt gestured toward Rachel with his eyes, but Rachel looked down at her food.

"What?" Blaine mouthed. Kurt leaned in very close.

"She's staring at you," Kurt whispered so lightly that he wasn't even sure if he had actually said it.

Blaine rolled his eyes. Rachel looked up and smiled at Blaine, who stared at her blankly. She raised her eyebrows and even winked. She didn't realize that the whole table was staring at her.

"Rachel, knock it off," Tina whispered harshly.

"Might I ask you two a simple question?" Rachel asked in an incredibly high-pitched voice.

"Rachel," Tina said abrasively. "Now is not the time."

"I think we all already know," Rachel said to the boys, ignoring Tina's commands to stop. "But, I'd like to know for sure," she continued.

"What are you talking about?" Kurt asked impatiently.

Rachel leaned in towards them. "Did you leave me for Kurt?" she asked Blaine.

"Enough, Rachel!" Mercedes said. "You can't just ask people stuff like that."

"What do you mean 'leave you'? I was never with you. We went on one date. I think you want to believe that I left you for Kurt because if I were gay, that would be a better reason to not date you rather than the fact that I simply do not like you in any romantic way. Don't use sexuality to feel better about yourself. Gay or not, I don't want you," Blaine explained loudly. The table grew quiet.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. You're right, I wanted you to be gay. I still think you are, but whatever," Rachel said to Blaine.

The table was quiet with their conversations for the rest of lunch. Artie quietly talked to Blaine while Kurt talked with Mercedes and Tina. Rachel tried to jump into the conversation, but Kurt would talk before she ever could. He didn't want to be rude, but he knew that Tina and Mercedes would rather hear him talk than her.

"That was scary," Blaine said to Kurt when lunch was over. "I didn't want to be mean to Rachel, I just wanted to avoid the question. The only way to make her shut up, though, would have been to make her feel bad. Was I rude?" Blaine asked.

Kurt chuckled. "No. Well, even if you were, she deserved it," he answered.

"I'm sorry that I don't want people to know, yet," Blaine said.

"Its fine, Blaine. You have to take your time with situations like this," Kurt advised.

They walked to science together in comfortable silence.

"Will your dad stay for coffee? When we go out later, I mean," Kurt asked.

"No. I told him that we had homework to do and that we wanted a change of scenery. He said he'd bring us to coffee and run errands and come back. If I had my own car, I'd drive us," Blaine explained.

"Oh, it's okay. I was just wondering. So it's like a date?" Kurt said quietly. They were sitting at their lab table and there was barely anyone in the room yet.

Blaine smiled. "Yeah, I guess so. I promise, we won't have to bail out of this one," Blaine assured Kurt.

"I didn't mind leaving the pizza place on Friday. Anywhere is fine, as long as I'm with you," Kurt said, sounding regrettably sappy.

Once class began, Blaine fell asleep. It wasn't obvious, though, because he didn't snore, and they sat in the back. The teacher was too busy lecturing to notice. Kurt slowly grabbed Blaine's notebook from under his head to take notes for him. Kurt could write very quickly and knew he could update both his and Blaine's notebook.

When there was nearly five minutes remaining, Kurt shook Blaine awake gently.

"That concludes our lesson for today. You have five minutes to talk amongst yourselfs," their teacher stated.

"Blaine," Kurt said. Blaine lifted his head up slowly.

"Shit," he whispered.

"Five minutes left. We did nothing but notes," Kurt informed him. He looked down at his notebook.

"Awe, babe, you took notes for me," Blaine said quietly but gratefully. Kurt couldn't help but notice Blaine called him a pet name. He took a mental note of it.

"Yeah. I'm a fast writer. One of my many talents," Kurt said sarcastically.

"Thanks, man," Blaine said. Kurt nodded his head.

Kurt and Blaine talked mindlessly for the last few minutes of class. After the bell rang, Kurt walked Blaine to gym, as he did every day. "I'll see you at glee," he said before leaving.

Kurt wanted to sleep through his next classes so they would go by quickly, but it was useless. He hated to sleep in public and nothing was going to change that. He thought maybe Tina could keep him occupied, but she only annoyed him.

"I'm really sorry about Rachel today," Tina said the second Kurt sat next to her.

"You do not have to apologize on her behalf, Tina," Kurt replied tiredly.

"Kurt. I invited you to see at my table, therefore I'm responsible for how you are treated there. I knew Rachel wouldn't have been able to keep her mouth shut," Tina explained. Kurt remained silent.

"Kurt, I know Rachel wouldn't deserve to know if you were dating Blaine or not. And, maybe I don't, either. I guess no one deserves to know except you two. But, I just want to warn you that the whole school thinks you are," Tina continued. Kurt sighed loudly.

"I know what the school is saying about us. And, I think it's unfair. Just because I happen to be gay, and Blaine happens to be my best friend, does not mean that we are together in any way. What are the chances that we'd both be gay? That my first and only friend in high school, besides you and Mercedes, happened to be gay," Kurt said.

"I realize that. It's not because you guys are best friends. It's because you're always with each other, and you always look at each other like you want to melt into each other that instant. And, it's very noticeable that Blaine turns all sweet around you. He's like the Hulk around everyone else, but then he follows you around like a puppy. It's sweet, but suspicious. Look, I'm not trying to get you to admit anything here. I'm just warning you."

Kurt said nothing.

"And, don't think that we don't notice that you always go to the bathroom together during glee club. I see Rachel and Quinn share a hasty glance with each other when you two leave together. They want to believe Blaine's gay more than anyone in this school. They'll stop at nothing until his secret is revealed, I'm sure," Tina warned Kurt. He wanted to be angry with Tina, because she forced him into a horrible mood, but he knew she was only trying to help.

"Thanks, Tina. We'll try not to act suspiciously. We wouldn't want people to start rumors," he said, trying to indicate that the rumors were not true. He knew that she knew the truth, though. He had never denied it.

They sat in silence for the rest of the class. She said a simple, "see you at glee club," after the bell had rung, and Kurt replied, "See ya."

During his last period, Kurt thought about what Tina was saying. He began to realize how much it wouldn't affect him if everyone knew he was dating Blaine. Everyone already knew he was gay, anyway. But, he still didn't want anyone to know, because it would hurt Blaine. He tried to think of a way to distract students from the thought of them dating without actually spending time apart.

The bell rang and Kurt ran to his locker before heading to Blaine's.

"Hey, I have an idea," Kurt said to Blaine before Blaine even saw him.

"Oh, hey. An idea for what?" Blaine asked. He opened his locker and stuffed books into it before retrieving a blue backpack.

Kurt looked around the hallway. Students were surrounding them. "Not here. Let's go to the bathroom before glee club starts," Kurt suggested. Blaine looked around.

"Okay," Blaine said. He shut his locker and followed Kurt to the bathroom closest to the choir room.

"Okay. So, I think you should date a girl," Kurt began to explain.

"Wait, what? Kurt, you know I'm not…I don't…wait, are you breaking up with me?" Blaine panicked.

"No! No, absolutely not. You didn't let me finish. You should pretend to date a girl. Tina told me that everyone is on to us-"

"Tina knows?!"

"No! Well, yes, I'm sure she does know. But, I never confirmed that we were dating. She wanted to warn me that we should stop acting so obvious. So, maybe you should find a girl to fake date. Everyone will think it's real except us. Only until you're ready to let the world know that we're together," Kurt explained.

"Is that our only option?" Blaine asked.

"That's all I could think of. Unless you want to stop talking to me during the school day and never be around me. But, I don't think either of us want that," Kurt said.

Without another word, Blaine planted his lips on Kurt's. His tongue licked Kurt's bottom lip, looking for access. Kurt granted him access into his mouth, and their tongues danced. The sudden act of affection gave Kurt butterflies in his stomach. Blaine reached up to put his arms around Kurt's neck. They fell into their kiss and continued for a long while, until they realized that being late to glee club together would not help their situation.

"What was that for?" Kurt asked as they exited the bathroom.

"Just something to get me through until the first bathroom break," Blaine told him.

Kurt stopped and grabbed Blaine's hand. They were in the middle of the hallway, but he was sure no one was around.

"About that," Kurt began, still frozen in their place. "We shouldn't do that anymore. Tina said it's most obvious when we leave together, and that everyone notices. Especially Rachel and Quinn," Kurt explained.

"Ugh! That's like, my favorite part of glee club. If we can't leave for the break, then I need one more kiss before we go into the choir room," Blaine said, smiling. He stood on his tippy-toes and met his lips to Kurt's briefly. They heard a gasp from behind them and their hearts stopped. Their eyes grew wide and they felt frozen. They stared at each other, afraid to turn around to see if what they had heard was in their heads or not.

"Aha! I got it! I've been following you since the dismissal bell, and I knew I'd catch you!" They heard a squeaky voice exclaim. They turned around to see Rachel holding her phone in front of her face.

"Do you want to see? It's actually rather cute," she said, holding the phone toward them. Kurt squinted to see the phone, then stepped closer, leaving still-frozen Blaine where he was.

Rachel held the phone tightly to make sure Kurt didn't snatch it out of her hand. He saw a clear image of him kissing his boyfriend on Rachel's screen. He sighed sharply.

"What do we have to do so you do not send that picture to everyone?" Kurt asked impatiently.

Rachel smiled. "I couldn't help but overhear you two in the bathroom…while I was eavesdropping from outside the door. I know that Blaine needs a beard. A fake girlfriend so no one assumes that he's gay. I think I'm the perfect gal. Honestly, it's a win-win situation," Rachel explained.

"I don't understand. What would you get out of it? If you know that Blaine will be faking it, and that he won't actually be interested in you, how does that help you? Unless you're so desperate that you don't really care. Wait, are you gay, Rachel? Will Blaine be your beard as well?" Kurt asked.

"No! I'm not. This situation will help me because Blaine is a football player. He's the best football player. And, he's big and strong and everyone is afraid of him. Plus, he's attractive. You see, his reputation will boost me up. People will finally notice me once I'm dating him," Rachel explained to Kurt.

Blaine stepped forward toward them. "If I pretend to date you, you will delete that picture?" Blaine asked to clarify.

"No. I won't delete it. Because, the second I do delete it, you'll stop pretending to be my boyfriend. I'm not stupid. I'm not going to delete it, but I'll give you my word that I won't send it out. Why would I even want to? I don't want the whole school to think you're gay while I'm fake-dating you. That defeats the purpose," Rachel answered.

"Blaine, I think it's a good idea," Kurt said. He looked at Rachel. "But just know that he'll be coming home to me after he spends the day faking it with you. No matter what you do, it will not be real," he told her.

"Very true, Rachel. I only have eyes for Kurt. This plan is for the sole purpose of reputation. There will be no real feelings involved," Blaine said.

"I understand. Do we have a deal?" Rachel asked, extending her hand.

Blaine looked at Kurt for final reassurance. Kurt half-smiled and nodded his head.

"Deal," Blaine huffed, shaking hands with Rachel.

"Let's go. Glee is just about to begin," Rachel said, looking at her watch. "I'll send this picture to your phones, boys. I think you'll enjoy keeping it. It's a nice shot," Rachel said. She pushed buttons on her phone as they walked. Kurt and Blaine walked slightly behind her.

Blaine slipped his hand into Kurt's and squeezed, but did not let go. "Don't worry. There's no one I could possibly want more than you. This is for the best. I'm not ready to come out yet," Blaine whispered to him.

"I know," he whispered back. "I only want what's best for you. This is what you need, and that's okay. But, can I fill Tina and Mercedes in on what's going on? I don't want them to think you're actually dating her," Kurt asked.

"Yes, please do," Blaine replied.

Rachel looked back at them and rolled her eyes. "Come on, Blainers. Hold your girlfriend's hand," she said, ripping his hand away from Kurt's.

"Don't call me that," Blaine said.

Kurt walked behind them as they walked into the choir room. He only wanted Blaine to be happy. He was hoping he wouldn't regret this decision.
