"Oh no," I groaned as Edward pulled up. "Why are they here?" I practically screeched at him.
He sighed. "They have something to ask you."
"Oh." What could they possibly want to ask me?
"You can say no, though," he assured. Say no to what?
I climbed out of the car, nervously. When I got closer to them Jacob waved.
"Hey Bella!"
"Hey Jake. Charlie." I nodded at him, not meeting his eyes.
"Hi, Bella. We, uh, we wanted to ask you something," Charlie stuttered.
"Yeah, we're having a football party tonight and we thought you might wanna come," Jacob offered.
A party? Hours and hours in a room with Charlie? Oh no.
Jacob misinterpreted my stress and added, "Don't worry. You won't be the only girl there. My sister Rachel's in town and Emily'll be there."
I don't want to go. I will not go. I will not go.
"Um, sure. Just let me go set my backpack down."
Crap.
The ride there was silent and uncomfortable. I sat squashed in between Jacob and Charlie. The party was at Billy's house and in addition to Billy, Emily, Sam, Quil, Paul, Embry, Leah, and who I assumed was Rachel were there. Jacob hadn't mentioned Leah. I didn't particularly like her. I hadn't spoken to her but she was always giving me dirty looks.
I had no idea who was playing but everyone else seemed pretty excited about it. I didn't really talk to many people. The game was in full swing when suddenly Jacob pulled me into his bedroom.
"Hey!" I hollered.
He ignored my protest. "Charlie told me about yesterday," he said, glaring at me.
Damn. "Oh."
"Yeah-oh. Is he your father?"
Yes. "Um, it's possible."
"God. Why didn't you tell me? Why haven't you told him?"
"It only happened yesterday, Jake. I wasn't in the mood to tell anyone and I won't be telling Charlie at all and neither will you," I half whispered and half yelled.
"What's gonna stop me? He deserves to know! He's been a wreck ever since you went missing over 16 years ago! He cried for years!" His voice was getting higher. I felt a pang of guilt over not telling Charlie but quickly shook it off. It was the right decision.
"I'm sorry but you can't tell him. It's all part of the secret Jake. If we told him this he could find out about vampires and then his life would be in danger!"
He looked confused. "Danger? Would the Cullen's come after him?" Now he was pissed.
"Of course not! But there are rules Jacob! Vampire rules! Rule number one? Never tell a human! There's a family called the Volturi and if they fount out that he knew about vampires, they'd kill him!" I had to fight to keep my voice low.
He was quiet for a minute, processing. Finally, he spoke slowly. "Then how are you allowed to know?" Oops. I really shouldn't have come to this party.
"Because, Jake," I whispered, "I'm gonna be a vampire one day."
"WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING? You'd be better off dead!" I flinched and heard the party still. Sam and Emily came running in.
"Jacob, stop. Calm down," Sam ordered. I then realized he was shaking.
"Come on, Bella." Emily was leading me out of the room.
After that it all happened fast. Billy got Charlie to leave with him and Emily lead me to the pack house with the rest of the party following. When we got there, the rest of the pack arrived. Sam and a slightly calmer yet still angry Jacob were the last to come inside. Everyone was arguing quickly and loudly. It took me a minute to figure out what they were talking about: they were arguing about whether or not to keep me here!
"Hey!" No one even acknowledged me. "HEY!" The arguing froze and all eyes were on me.
"Don't you think you should be including me in this decision?" I demanded.
"At this point, you no longer have a choice. For all we know, you're suffering from Stockholm Syndrome," Sam spoke in his domineering Alpha tone. "Until we get a grasp on your situation, the decision's aren't yours to make."
What? "You do realize that if I'm not home in a few hours there going to come looking for me and then you're going to have a war on your hands."
"Fine by me!" Yelled Jake. I glared at him and Sam raised his hand, gesturing for him to be quiet.
Sam's tone became more negotiable. "You aren't leaving tonight."
Negotiate. Yes, I'll negotiate. "Fine," I said calmly. "I will call home and tell them I'm staying here tonight. After that, we'll see." Jacob looked like he was about to explode.
"Deal," agreed Sam.
"Good," Emily said kindly. "Come with me, Bella." She led me to 'my' bedroom. It looked exactly the same: purple sheets, vanity, drawers, and closet.
"I let you get settled in. Dinner's at seven and after that I'll find some pajamas for you to wear. Okay?" I nodded and she left smiling. I sat down on the bed and tried to decide who would be the best person to call.
Edward and my parents would be furious and Alice and Jasper wouldn't be much happier. That left Carlisle and Esme. Just imagining talking to Esme was terrible. She'd get too emotional. Carlisle.
"Hello?" Here we go.
"Carlisle?"
"Bella? What's wrong?" He sounded concerned now.
"Nothings wrong. Where are you?" I asked.
He replied, "On the way home. What's going on?" Perfect! He wasn't around the others.
"Well, here's the thing, and don't freak out but the pack fount out about Charlie and everything and they're demanding I stay here tonight."
Silence. The silence dragged until finally, "Do you need us to come get you?" Underneath the calm I could hear the anger brewing.
"No! I'm fine, I promise!"
"Are you sure?"
"Yes! I'll be home tomorrow," I hope. "I just wanted to call..."
"Right. Well, if you're sure you're fine, I'll tell the others."
Whew! "Thanks, Grandpa."
I could almost hear his smile. "Alright Bella. Love you."
"Love you too, Grandpa."
I hung up. I just hope I can keep my promise and I really am fine...
