Our eyes locked for an impossibly long moment. My eyes a perfect copy of his. His eyes watered and he embraced me in a bear like grip. I couldn't be sure but I thought I felt him sob against my shoulder. I was not hiding my emotions either. I wasn't a crier and I never had been but in that moment loose tears rained down my cheek.
All these years, my impossibly confusing introduction to this world finally had light shimmering on it. He was my father. My true, biological father. The one who shared my eyes and unruly hair.
I squeezed him tight as well and we stayed like this for a long while. Eventually though, we parted. He wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.
"Er," he cleared his throat. "Tell-tell me about you. Everything. I-I wanna know everything."
"Um," I stumbled. Where does one start when telling someone 'everything'?
"What you're favorite color? Food?" He offered.
"Oh well," I wiped my eyes before continuing. "My favorite color changes. Today it's purple. My favorite food is probably spaghetti." He hung on my words as though he was trying very hard to memorize them.
"Where have you been all these years? Where have you lived? What happened to Renee?" Renee. My mother. The one that left me on my family's doorstep.
"Um, I've been with my family, The Cullens. We've moved around a lot but they're great. Renee is, um, not around. She well, she left me."
"What? What do you mean?" His eyes were glistening once more. Oh no.
"Well, that's why I live with The Cullen's. They adopted me after Renee left me on their doorstep. I don't remember it. I don't remember her or," I stopped myself from saying 'you'.
"The Cullen's—are they nice? To you, I mean."
"They're great. The best. They didn't hesitate to adopt me. Um, would you like to come home with me? I'm sure they could help fill in some of the, er, blanks." And I desperately want to have them to help me, I added silently.
"Uh, yes. Yes, of course."
So I drove, somewhat shakily, towards home. I could feel his eyes on me, studying me silently. When I arrived home, I practically leaped out if the car. There was no one outside. I walked with Charlie towards the door and inside the house.
My legs were weak and I was unbelievably sweaty. How would this go? What would I say? What would they say? I could barely wrap my head around any of this and it was all being pushed towards me now and it was because of me. Maybe this hadn't been a good idea but it was too late to think about that. So instead I let Charlie into the house and tried not to think of anything and just take one second at a time.
The living room was empty. "I'm home!" I called. At human speed, Carlisle appeared and descended the stairs.
"Bella, I see you've brought Chief Swan. To what do we owe the pleasure?" He said with a sincere smile.
"Charlie is uh, well, he's here to talk with us. Is everyone here?"
Carlisle nodded and turned back to the stairs. "Everybody! Come down here please."
One by one they filed in to the room. "Oh, please have a seat," Carlisle gestured for Charlie to sit down and he took a seat on the coach and I sat down next to him. After everyone was seated Carlisle asked, "So what brings you here Chief Swan?"
Without a word Charlie shakily pulled the two pictures of me out of his pocket and handed them to Carlisle. Carlisle feigned confusion.
"Where did you get these?" He asked and Edward sat down next to me. Subtly, I moved closed to him before responding to Carlisle,
"I brought one to him and...he had the other."
"How is that possible?" Esme asked, who was seated next to Carlisle on the couch across from us. I opened my mouth to speak but Charlie beat me to it, speaking gruffly,
"Seventeen years ago my wife Renee went missing along with my daughter Isabella Marie Swan," he looked to me. "Today, I found my daughter again."
Esme gasped along with Alice, who was standing in a corner with the others, even though they already knew that.
Carlisle looked thoroughly surprised but remained calm. "You believe Bella is your biological daughter?"
"Do you think she's not?" Charlie said defensively.
Carlisle blinked. "I'm not sure. She is our daughter and if she's your biological daughter we would certainly want you two to get to know each but this shouldn't go any further if that's not the case."
Before I knew what hit me, I was at the police station giving a DNA sample.
