Chapter 25
For a second, everything felt calm. Everyone was so quiet that Blaine forgot they were there. He was lost in the kiss and couldn't focus on anything else.
But, of course, the kiss had to end. And when it did, everyone stood still. Kurt's eyes were wide after realizing what had just happened. Blaine was frozen with fear. He wouldn't dare look over at his parents.
Tina was the one to break the ice. Not remembering that Blaine's parents were unaware of the situation, she spoke up. "You guys are so cute!" she said, and Mercedes elbowed her lightly. Tina sensed the silent tension and whispered a soft "sorry."
Blaine's brother, Cooper, tried to think of something to do quickly before their father exploded. Cooper knew all along, and he didn't want Blaine to get into any trouble.
Blaine slipped his hand into Kurt's for comfort. Kurt squeezed his hand, but Blaine couldn't squeeze back.
"Alright, well, I'm beat. It's been a great night everyone, but I think we should all head to bed," Cooper suggested. "Blaine, I'll help you set up the air mattress downstairs for your friends," he continued talking, trying to get Blaine away from their parents.
They all scurried down the stairs to the basement. Cooper said goodbye to his own guests and to Kurt's father.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of it," Cooper whispered as he walked Burt to the door.
"Tell Kurt to call me if they need me," he asked.
"I will, sir. Thanks for coming," Cooper said politely.
The only people left in the living room were Cooper and his parents.
"Look, guys, you have to go easy on Blaine," he told them.
Their father's face was red. "He embarrassed us in front of our guests," he said through his teeth.
"Those were his guests, Dad! They all knew already," Cooper argued.
"Knew what? What exactly is going on with those kids!" he screamed.
"Bill, calm down," their mother said calmly.
"Was it just a sick joke?" he continued screaming. "Or is our son really a faggot?"
"Hey! Don't throw words around like that, Dad. Blaine can't help who he is," Cooper defended him.
Bill marched up to Blaine's room, and Cooper and his mother followed.
"What are you doing?" Cooper asked.
"I'm getting Blaine's suitcase. He's not staying here anymore. I don't want to be in the presence of one of them," Bill shouted.
"He's not a criminal, Dad, he's your son!" Cooper argued loudly.
"No. You're my only son, Coop," he answered. He put Blaine's suitcase on his bed and left the room.
Cooper looked at his mom. "What are you going to do about this?" he asked angrily.
She walked out without saying a word. She locked herself in her own room and cried silently.
Cooper ran downstairs before his dad could get there.
"Look, kiddo, we gotta go," he said hastily. "Dad's pissed. Pack some of your stuff up and I'll drive you all to Kurt's house. Stay there for a while until he calms down. I'm going back to university tomorrow, so he'll have some alone time in the house to think. But it's best you just stay at Kurt's."
"Where's Dad now?" Blaine asked.
"Probably making himself a drink. Tina, Mercedes, and Artie, go wait in my car, please. It's unlocked. Kurt and Blaine, come pack Blaine's things. Let's go before Dad can scream," Cooper instructed.
They all ran up the stairs. Mercedes and Tina helped get Artie into the car. They talked while Kurt and Blaine were inside.
"I'm worried," Artie said.
"Me, too. I could hear Blaine's dad screaming from the second floor," Mercedes said.
Inside the house, Blaine rushed to get his things together. He packed two weeks worth of clothing, chargers, and hair products into his suitcase.
In his backpack, he had all his school books and his laptop. Kurt carried the backpack out while the two other boys struggled with the heavy suitcase.
They slipped through the living room with no sign of their father. Kurt had to sit on Blaine's lap in the car because it was full. Blaine didn't mind. He wanted to be close to Kurt. He put his arms around Kurt like a seat belt, and rested his pounding head against Kurt's back.
"Should I drop you kids off at home?" Cooper asked.
"Yeah, I think Kurt and Blaine should be alone tonight," Mercedes said. She invited Artie and Tina to sleep at her house, and they said yes.
When they got to Kurt's house, Cooper got out of the car to help carry things inside. Kurt's door was unlocked, which should have been strange since it was nearly one in the morning. But, Burt assumed Kurt and Blaine would need to get out of that house.
When they walked in, Burt was lying on the living room couch, watching TV sleepily with a blanket draped over him. He sat up when he noticed they were all there.
"You boys okay?" He asked.
Kurt nodded his head.
"Mr. Hummel, is it okay if Blaine stays here for a while? I don't think he's really allowed back at our house right now," Cooper told him.
"Yes, that's completely alright. Blaine, go on upstairs and put your stuff in Kurt's room," Burt ordered.
Blaine dragged his suitcase up the stairs. When we was gone, Cooper talked.
"I don't know how long it's going to be before our father accepts it. I only live an hour away, so when Blaine needs new clothes, I can grab them out of the house for him. Also, if you get sick of him, send him over to my place. Uh, I don't know how you're going to feel about this, but I took all of the money out of my dad's wallet before we left. I left him a note saying I needed it to take care of Blaine, but really I'm just going to leave it here. He won't miss it, trust me. I mean, that was just his normal wallet. He has another wallet that he takes to work that has a lot more than this. Basically, he has more money than you'd think. And I can get more from him if you need it," Cooper said quickly.
"Don't worry about it. Blaine isn't a hassle to take care of. Thank you, though, for doing this," Burt answered. He accepted the money out of Cooper's hand and was extremely surprised at how thick the pile was.
Blaine came back downstairs and Cooper hugged him. "Take care. Call me if you need me," he said to Blaine.
"Thanks, Cooper," Blaine said back.
Cooper left the house and they heard his car drive away. Kurt suddenly realized how exhausted he was, and how much more tired Blaine must have felt.
Burt rubbed the back of his head. "I know it sucks to sleep on the couch all of the time, Blaine. Especially since you'll be here for a while. So, I'm going to let you boys both sleep in Kurt's room. But no funny business. I mean it. I'm trusting you two. And remember, I'm right down the hall," Burt warned them.
Kurt and Blaine were too tired to even show any reaction to what Burt had just said. They just nodded. Their eyes were halfway closed.
"Get some sleep," Burt ordered.
They dragged their feet up the stairs. Blaine was carrying his backpack.
"Thank God your room is so big, Kurt," Blaine commented. His suitcase was lied out on the floor and it barely looked like it was taking up room.
Blaine placed his backpack on top of his suitcase and climbed into bed.
"Don't you want to get pajamas on first?" Kurt asked. Blaine groaned at the thought of getting back up.
Kurt loaned Blaine his fuzziest pajama pants. "I know you packed PJs, but these ones are fuzzy. So, here," Kurt said, tossing them at Blaine.
They changed into comfortable pajamas and lied in Kurt's bed underneath the covers.
They were silent for a long time. Kurt thought about how strong Blaine was. He knew that if he were in the same situation as Blaine, he would've been a wreck. He thought about the box where he kept his razors, and how much they would have helped him through a time like that. But, the thought of Blaine taking a razor to his own skin made Kurt want to throw up. He never wanted Blaine to feel like he needed to do something like that in order to feel better. Kurt finally understood how hurt Blaine must be knowing that Kurt does that to himself. He decided he didn't want to hurt Blaine like that anymore.
"Hey," Kurt whispered.
"Yeah?" Blaine whispered back.
"You're okay, right?"
Blaine hesitated. "I'm okay," he promised.
Kurt snuggled up close to him. They shared body heat.
"I love you," Kurt said.
"I love you, too."
