A/N: Hey guys! Hit that review button and let me know if you're still there!
"I can't do this, I can't do this, I can't do this..." I muttered half-hysterically over and over as I stared at myself in the full length mirror of my enormous closet. Edward appeared behind me and wrapped a comforting arm around my shoulder.
"It'll be fine, love. You've been so back and forth about this. Maybe tonight will help you figure out what you really want to do. It's just one evening and if it feels wrong to you or something happens, just call and I'll be there for you, alright?" He soothed, and I had to admit: it helped.
I nodded and examined myself one last time. Despite Alice's constant interfering, I was wearing a pair of jeans and a simple blue v-neck with my black Converse shoes. Satisfied, Edward and I left the closet. Barely a moment had past before Edward murmured,
"He's here." Nerves overtook me once more as we made our way downstairs were Charlie stood at the door. I immediately noticed his change in appearance. Instead of his police uniform, he was wearing a dark blue shirt, jeans, and the usual stubble on his face was clean and shaven. Also, it looked as though he had actually slept recently.
"Oh, hey, Isabella," he said. Nervously?
"Hi," I muttered.
"Uh, you ready?"
I gulped. Herewe go. "Sure," I breathed and headed out the door with him, releasing Edward whom I'd been grasping to. As I saw the police car in the driveway, I suppressed a groan. I couldn't believe I was gonna be driven around in that. I climbed into the passenger side as he started the ignition. Soon enough, we were driving away.
"So...how's your week been?" He asked awkwardly.
Nerve-racking and sleepless, I wanted to say. Instead I went with, "Fine, busy with school." It wasn't necessarily a lie. Edward was trying to keep me distracted with studying. It did not work.
"Right," he responded, seemingly grateful to have a conversation topic. "Have you made any new friends."
I shrugged and replied honestly, "Not really. My family are my friends."
"That's nice," he said but I saw him flinch at the word 'family'. He pulled up to some sort of lodge and the inside had the look of an old diner. As we sat down at a corner booth I was relieved. It was a casual place. "I hope this is fine?"
"Yeah. Uh, it's great, actually."
"So, no new friends? How about a boyfriend?" He asked.
I coughed, surprised. I considered lying but quickly decided against. Everyone at school had seen Edward and I together and surely if I didn't tell him, someone in this small town would.
"Er, yeah. Edward and I are together."
This time he was surprised. "The big one," he asked, alarmed.
Ew. "Oh, no that's Emmett. Edward was the one I was next to earlier. He's my age." He seemed to relax a little. Before he could say anything about it, a waitress in an apron walked over.
"Oh, Charlie. Is this-is this your daughter?" The waitress seemed worked up and I blushed. So did Charlie.
"Yeah. Yeah, this is Isabella."
"Er, call me Bella," I muttered.
She wiped a tear from her eye. "Well, Bella it's nice to meet you. I know what your dad here wants. What about you? What'll you have?" I was uncomfortable with her calling Charlie my dad but I ignored the feeling.
"Um, I'll have the veggie burger and fries with a Coke, please."
"Sure thing, coming right up, sweetie," she replied before walking away.
The rest of the evening went by okay though he asked me a lot of questions. He asked where I'd lived before (which I gave the typical answer to: LA), what I liked to do in my free time, what my favorite subjects were, how I was adjusting to being in Forks, did I like rain, and then finally the question I probably should have expected as he drove me home.
"How do the Cullen's treat you?"
I answered truthfully. "Wonderfully, like I'm their own. They've always taken good care of me and I love them."
He sighed a long sigh as he pulled into the driveway. "I think that's good," he said and he seemed sincere. He walked me inside and said, "Well, here we go. Maybe we could do this again next Friday?" He seemed nervous again. I thought it over for a second.
"Yeah, I'd like that."
