My family, being the speedy and energetic vampires that they are, love baseball. Unfortunately for them but fortunately for my clumsy self, they rarely get to play except for when a big storm's coming. Much to my dismay, this Saturday was the perfect day. I didn't really understand why I was so upset though because I didn't do anything but referee. Then again, people in my family could get a little pissed if they didn't like what I called.
Edward drove me halfway to the field with Dads Jeep and carried me the short rest of the way. At first things were good. Everyone was running at lightening speed and skidding around in the mud while Grandma and I stood off to the side, laughing and watching them. It wasn't until the ball was thrown particularly far away and Alice froze mid run that things turned south. Suddenly Edward, Mom, and Dad were beside me.
"What? What's going on?"
"I shouldn't have brought you up here. I'm sorry," Edward apologized as everyone began to gather around.
"What?" I practically yelled. "Alice! What did you see?" I demanded.
"It's James," she breathed. "And Victoria with someone else. They found our baseball and they're coming this way." I gasped. This couldn't be happening again. No, no.
"We have to get her out of here," Edward hissed.
"It's too late. They'll be here any second," Alice explained.
Edward growled and pulled me behind him while undoing my ponytail and putting my hair around my neck.
"The more we can mask your scent the less desirable you'll be," he offered as explanation. Everyone gathered in front of me and waited in seconds of agonizing silence. Finally, I saw three figures in the distance approaching at human pace. It was the fiery orange hair of Victoria and the vicious expression of James that immediately got my attention. I took a slow deep breath to steady myself and prevent a scream from escaping my lips. Only after staring at the two for what seemed like forever did I peel my eyes away to look at the third. I tall thin man with dark skin and dreads. He looked fairly pleasant compared to the two evils next to him.
James was my main concern. He approached with a grace that remained me of a snake slithering slowly towards its prey. When they were no more than ten feet away they came to a stop. James was holding the baseball in his hands.
"Looking for this?" He asked in scratchy velvet tone and tossed the ball to Grandpa at a speed so fast I barely knew it had happened.
"Thank you," Grandpa responded. A silence elapsed.
"You are the Cullen's, no?" The unknown spoke up. "I am Laurent. James and Victoria have told me much about you." So he had a name. Laurent.
"Well, Laurent, given the past between between us and your friends here, I think it best if you three move on. We maintain a permanent residence nearby and we don't want anything jeopardizing that," Carlisle told.
Laurent nodded. "Certainly. We were on our way out of town as it is." He turned as if to leave but James bent down into attack position and was staring intently at me. I looked away.
"Laurent." James growled.
"James, come now. Leave these people." James hesitated a moment longer before standing up and straight, wrapping an arm around Victoria and began to walk swiftly behind Laurent. The moment they were out of side, Edward was pulling me to the Jeep.
"Hey, what's happening? Are they leaving?" I asked as I climbed into the Jeep.
"James is a tracker, I read his mind...he wants you," Edward explained as he buckled me in and closed the door. My mind was spinning. Want me? Tracker? So, is he coming after me? I saw Edward exchange words with Carlisle and the. He was in the Jeep, driving.
"What does that mean Edward? Is he after me? Talk to me," I begged, full of terror.
He took a breath before vowing, "Bella, I will keep you safe from him."
"Wh-where are we going?" I asked desperately.
"Away. Away from Forks."
