Chapter 49

-4 Days Later-

So far, we've got a pretty good layout of when Bella is in or out of her temporary apartment. I say temporary because I'm going to make sure she isn't here much longer, whether Tobias is the father of her babies or not. And another reason is because Max wasn't sure whether or not Tobias was going to make other arrangements for her.

Bella usually wakes up late and goes to breakfast at about nine. Afterwards, she'll come back, do who knows what, and then goes to lunch around one. Once again, she'll come back, hide away and then go to dinner at six.

Our problem is that she isn't out very long. The times aren't very reliable. It can range from an hour to only twenty minutes.

Today we have to hope she eats a big dinner. The second she leaves, we're going to raid her apartment. No one argued when I volunteered to go in. They knew that this meant more to me than to them, so trying to talk me out of it would have been pointless.

Strangely, things between Tobias and I haven't been awkward. He knew that I meant what I said the night I let him hold me for the last time, so he's been sleeping on the couch. Usually he's gone before I wake up, but he always leaves breakfast for me. I appreciate that since I probably wouldn't be eating if he didn't. In the afternoon, when he gets back from work, he stops in to check on me and then goes out to hunt for more evidence. So far he hasn't found anything.

It took a lot of self-restraint to not burst into Bella's apartment before she left. I just wanted to find something out so badly! All I could think about was how I wanted Tobias back. Why didn't I just let him back, when I was trying to find clues to prove his innocence? Who knows? I sure didn't.

It was a relief that I didn't run into Bella too often. Every time I saw her though, she had the same smug smile that made me want to punch her. It was hard, but I remained civilized. We never spoke to each other. She didn't need to say anything more and I just didn't want to talk to her.

Since I was getting extremely restless, and since it was almost six, I decided to roam the halls. I passed by the targeted apartment once just to make sure the watchmen were there. Obviously Bella would know something was up if there were people just watching her door, so we had to go with something that wouldn't be suspicious.

Like planned, Mike and Jessie were a couple doors down. Mike had Jessie pressed against the wall, their lips stuck in a passionate embrace. This was the plan but it wasn't just a plan to them.

I smiled to myself, thinking of the times when that was Tobias and I. I refused to let the thoughts linger for long. They hurt to think about.

They didn't even notice as I walked passed them, so they probably wouldn't notice Bella leaving.

"Aren't you guys supposed to be keeping watch?" I teased.

Both Mike and Jessie jumped. Once they realized it was me, they calmed.

"Kissing is part of our job, Tris," Jessie pointed out.

I laughed quietly. "I know that. Just make sure that you know what's going on." I entered the door at which they were stationed. It was an empty apartment that we've been using as a base.

When I got in, I saw that Christina and Will were already inside. The ones who were going into Bella's apartment included Jessie, Will, and myself. We could've had more help, but more people bring more risk. If to many things are moved, Bella would notice and the first person she would point her finger at is me.

"Has she left yet?" Will asked me.

"No. Just thought that I should get here a little early."

I crossed the room and sat down on the arm of the couch. As soon as I sat down I wanted to get right back up. Will was rubbing Christina's stomach and whispering softly. It made me uncomfortable and a little angry.

I closed my eyes and put a hand on my own stomach, seeking the rhythmic kicks of my baby. Immediately, I felt comfort spread as his or her little feet hit my hands. Jessie and Mike better open that door soon, because I was tired of waiting.

As if they had heard my thoughts, Mike and Jessie burst through the door and told us of Bella's departure. I basically leapt to feet and was out the door in seconds.

"Who is unlocking the door?" I asked.

"Me," Christina said.

My best friend pulled a bobby pin from her hair and began to work on the lock. We were in the apartment in no time. I went straight for the bedroom, hoping that she would keep something in the night stand.

"Dammit!" I yelled in frustration. We had searched the whole place and had found nothing. There wasn't a single piece of paper that helped us in any way.

Jessie and Will looked at me, defeated. But I wasn't giving up so easily.

"We'll just have to come back tonight." I insisted.

"Tris," Will began. "We'll need to do more observation if we want to go in at night."

"Why? We'll never be able to figure out what she does. We're not inside with her. As long as we go in really late, we'll be fine. Pregnant ladies are always tired."

"She's right Will!" Christina said from the hallway.

"I know how to get inside." Jessie announced. We all turned to stare at her. "Well, I do if the plan is alright with Tris."

"What is it?"

"Four. We use Four to get inside."

As Jessie explained it, the more I was unwilling. The plan was brilliant, but I hated it. I didn't want him anywhere near her. But I knew that it was the only way to get in.

"Just let me tell him. I don't think he'd agree if anyone else asked him."

When Tobias arrived at around eight, I was so nervous I almost ripped off my whole nail with my teeth. He saw my anxiousness and was immediately at my side.

"Tris, what's wrong?" he questioned. "Is it the baby?"

"No, the baby is fine." I assured him. "I need your help with something. It's very important."

"Sure, what is it?"

"We're going to prove your innocence."

Tobias' eyes lit up when I said that. "How?"

"I don't like this, and I don't think that you will either, but it's necessary." I said. "We need to get into her apartment tonight, and you need to help us."

His eyes narrowed. "What do I need to do?"

"You need to give Bella what she wants."

Tobias stood up, his expression hard. "Absolutely not."

"Tobias…"

"Tris, we're fighting for my innocence! Not trying to make me look guilty! And I've already told you that I would never do that to you."

I grabbed him by the neck and pulled his lips down to mine. "Do it, or you'll never get that I again." I demanded.

Tobias was breathing hard. "Yes ma'am."

"Do you think that you can figure out a way to convince Bella that you want her?"

"I suppose that I could turn on my charm." Tobias gave me a cheeky smile.

"Oh shut up." I laughed and pushed him away.

-Page Break-

I stood a ways away from Tobias and Bella. I could barely hear what they were saying, but I got most of it.

"Tobias, what a pleasant surprise." Bella said. "Why have you come to see me?"

"Because I need you Bella." Tobias said it flat out. "We both know I'm not the father of your children, but maybe someday, I will be. Ever since that day when you tried to kiss me, I've been crazy about you. Please know that I only said those things so that Tris wouldn't discover my feelings."

Bella considered this. "Well I'm glad that you have finally confessed it. When do we leave for Candor?" Wow, she moved fast.

"Two days." Tobias played along. "Tomorrow will be our first real night together. Not tonight." Bella looked a little crestfallen at that. "It'll also give me enough time to pack everything."

Bella nodded, draped her arms around his neck and kissed him. I looked away so I wouldn't get the urge to go over there and blow the whole thing. Tobias broke away, showing a smile that looked real to anyone who wasn't me. He opened the door and pulled her inside.

-Page Break-

"Come in." I heard Tobias whisper from inside the apartment.

It was decided that I was the only one to go in. Tobias was already in there and we didn't need the extra noise.

"Where's her purse?" I asked quietly.

Tobias led me to the bedroom. Bella was snoring softly. As quietly as I could, I dumped out the contents of her purse. Inside there were pens, Kleenex and the paternity test. Why have a purse when you keep almost nothing in it?

"There's nothing." I whispered.

Tobias muttered some obscenities and looked like he was going to punch the wall. I placed my hand on my stomach and tried to think. That was it! My stomach gave me an idea.

I motioned for Tobias to come and stand by me at the side of the bed, that way I could drop down and hide if she woke up, and it would just be Tobias.

Slowly, I pulled the covers off of her and peeled up her shirt. The dim light coming from the living room was all I needed to see that Bella had a fake belly on. A fake belly.

I turned to Tobias, a large smile plastered on my face. It was the same for him. My hands laced themselves with his as we walked out of the bedroom and the apartment. As I looked up at the man in front of me, I felt guilt well up inside of me.

"I'm sorry I didn't believe you right away. I don't know what was wrong with me."

Tobias hushed me. "It's all right Tris. She went to big lengths to make a convincing case."

"But I still should've had faith in you. You're my husband; I should have believed you right away."

Tobias started to back me into the wall.

"Tris?"

"Yeah?"

"Shut up."

He lips came down on mine.
