Whoa! Two updates in a week! What is this? Ok, so I've gotten a few reviews regarding Tobias. Remember, this is a no war story. They do not know that Tobias is not Divergent. I know that he is genetically damaged, but they don't know this in the story.

Chapter 56

-Day of Initiate Arrival-

It's been almost four months. That's how long Carter has been missing. Nearly four long months of not knowing whether or not my baby was alive. My friends have tried to be supportive, but they know that what Tobias and I need is time. Time to grieve for our unimaginable loss.

Tobias has been my rock. He's been so strong. He has not broken down since the night Carter went missing. Well, at least not that I've seen. I don't know how he acts when I'm asleep. All I know is that when I'm awake, he's convincing me that we did all we could've in Candor.

We couldn't have stolen the truth serum. We would've been caught for sure. They keep a very good watch on that serum. Also, threatening Bella wouldn't have gotten us anywhere. Knowing her, she would have lied about Carter's true location and then she would have gone into hiding as soon as we left. Then we'd have absolutely no leads.

Both Tobias and I tried to keep ourselves busy by working as much as we could. We weren't avoiding each other; we just didn't want to think about Carter. Both of us knew we couldn't become a couple that splits up if something happens to their child.

Today was the day that the initiates were coming. To me, it was funny that Tobias and I were spending our time teaching other peoples kids when we didn't even know where our own daughter was.

As we waited by the net, we could hear Max's speech. Tobias and Uriah were making bets on what faction the first jumper would be from. Lauren was standing a little ways off. I was just thinking. Thinking about the only thing I've been thinking about lately.

When the first jumper landed in the net, their clothes revealed that they were from Candor. Uriah groaned and Tobias chuckled. Something neither of us has done in a long time. After helping the kid get out of the net, he announced the first jumper to the rest of the present faction members.

This year, there were no Abnegation, but there was three Amity.

Dustin – Candor, black hair, green eyes, somewhat tall and lean.

Monique – Erudite, pixie style brown hair, brown eyes, average height.

Duke – Erudite, blonde hair, blue eyes, extremely tall, probably 6'5" maybe taller.

Benjamin – Amity, brown hair, blue eyes, average height.

Hadley – Candor, strawberry blonde hair, brown eyes, probably only an inch or two taller than me.

Peyton – Erudite, blonde hair, grey eyes, fairly tall for a girl.

Meredith – Amity, brown hair, grey eyes, pretty tall.

Xander – Candor, blonde hair, brown eyes, average height with a lean build.

Michelle – Candor, brown hair, brown eyes, pretty short, looks weak.

Serena – Amity, classic long-legged, blonde hair, blue-eyed girl.

Brandon – Vicious looking Erudite, black hair, nearly black eyes, very tall.

Tobias and I introduced ourselves, got the usual questions about our names, and started on the tour. We decided that we weren't going to let them know that we were together. Last year, revealing our relationship brought many near death experiences.

After the tour, we let them have the rest of the day off, like usual.

At the table in the cafeteria, Uriah was talking to Zeke about the Dauntless born. Apparently there were twelve of them and they were all sassy and well built. He asked about the transfers and Tobias said that they were all pretty different. Only a few looked like they could go far.

Today was one of my bad days. On a bad day, I would just kind of close myself off and not speak to anyone. All I can think about is Carter and I don't want to deal with anything else. Tobias had noticed earlier and knew that he should just take over today.

"I'm gonna go take a nap." I said quietly to him. He nodded and came with me.

-Visiting Day-

Since the beginning of initiation, four have been cut. Two Dauntless born and two transfers. Michelle and Hadley. It was actually an interesting group. Most have excelled in the physical part of initiation and all the fights have been really close.

We met in the training room to talk to the initiates before allowing them to go off on their own.

"Today is visiting day." I announced. "I want you to know that the majority of your parents will not show up. I'm not trying to put you down, I'm just telling you the truth. Don't feel bad if yours don't show up. Remember, faction before blood." Even though I don't believe in the last bit, I said it anyways. They needed to know that their faction is their new family.

"Go." Tobias said. "They day is yours."

Tobias and I followed them out. We leaned against a wall and casually watched the initiates. Like promised, few parents showed up. I closed my eyes for a few minutes, just clearing my head. When I opened my eyes I saw my mother. I blinked a few times, thinking that I was just seeing things, but she didn't go away. She was really there.

I grabbed Tobias' arm and took him with me. "Mom?" I called out.

My mother turned her head and saw me, a smiling forming on her face. "Beatrice."

I led her deeper into the compound so no snoopy initiates would see us.

"What are you doing here?" I asked her.

"Well, we haven't seen you in a while and-"

"We?" I questioned.

"Your father and I."

"Dad's here?"

"Yes. We came because we wanted to see our grandchild. I know that most don't get that pleasure, but we figured you'd be alright with it."

My throat went dry. My parents came here to see a child that I no longer had. I looked to Tobias. Do we tell her the truth? Or do we lie and say that the baby didn't make it? Tobias decided on the truth.

"Uh, we had, um." His voice was cracking and I grabbed his arm supportively. "We had a daughter. Carter."

"Oh that's wonderful!" My mom exclaimed. She looked like she wanted to say more.

"Had." Tobias said. "She… she was taken from us."

My mother looked from Tobias to me. "I'm… I'm so sorry."

No one said anything more. "I'm going to go tell dad." I said after a while.

"No, why don't you let me." Mom insisted.

I waved her off. "Let her go, Natalie." I heard Tobias say.

If anything else was said, I didn't hear it. The walk back didn't take long, but it was difficult to find my father. After a few minutes, I saw a man who was the height and build of my dad. From the back, it looked like him. It also looked like his arms were crossed or he was holding something. As I came closer, I saw little feet.

I was about to turn away. My parents didn't have a small child. They were too old for that.

I stopped before turning away completely. The man had turned slightly, enough for me to see his face. It was my dad. My dad was holding a baby.

"Dad?" I called while walking towards him. No response. "Andrew?" That got his attention.

His face lit up as he saw me. "Beatrice!" He now faced me, gently rocking back and forth. I couldn't take my eyes off of the baby in his arms.

"Carter." I whispered.

"So your mother told you about her?" my father asked. "We thought that we could bring her and her and your child could have a play date."

"What?" I was confused. "Mom didn't tell me anything about this."

My dad was equally confused. "Then how do you know your name?"

"That's my daughter." I said, hardly able to contain my excitement.

"Carter is the daughter of a factionless girl. She came to us about four months ago and asked if we could take care of her. Apparently her father is a bad man." My dad told me.

"No, that is my daughter. Carter was kidnapped four months ago. She was taken to you." I insisted.

"But-I don't understand."

"Andrew." I heard my mother's voice behind me.

"I can prove that I know her." I said, confused to why my dad was so hesitant to believe me. "She has a birthmark on her left hip."

Both of my parents looked at me in shock. "Carter really is your daughter."

"Can I please?" I held my arms out.

"Andrew." My mother said again. I saw her nod and then Carter was in my arms.

I nearly started sobbing into my baby girl. After so long, I finally held her in my arms again. My mother put her hand on my shoulder.

"Let's go back to your husband." She said quietly.

When we got back to Tobias, he wrapped his arms around us. I heard him whispering things that I couldn't make out.

When we broke apart, I handed Carter to her father. I turned to my parents, unsure of what to say. They've been taking care of Carter the past four months, they weren't just going to be alright with letting her go.

"She's a sweet little girl." Mom said.

"She's a daddy's girl." I said while laughing.

My father smiled, and I took that as a sign that it was true for them as well.

"You'll bring her to visit right?" He asked.

I nodded. Of course I would. They told me they were going to head out. It was obvious how hard it was for them to leave without Carter, and part of me felt bad for making them. But they're Abnegation. They have to be unselfish. And insisting on keeping someone else's daughter would be selfish.

I turned back to Tobias.

"Carter's home."

Yay! Carter's back! Love you guys!
