Howdy! Ok now I've gotten requests for another baby. I may agree to that. But I need names. Please leave suggestions!
Chapter 58
The fears of the initiates were starting to become a little repetitive. They were all pretty basic, but that's common for the first time. After they all had gone, Tobias and I stayed in the room, sorting through the results. So far no one seemed Divergent. But it was too early to confirm that.
When we were done, Tobias looked over at me.
"I'm sorry that I didn't defend you earlier." He was absolutely ashamed of himself.
I reached over and ran my fingers along his cheek. "It's alright Tobias." I said quietly. "If you had said anything, the initiates would've accused you of being her father and they would have realized that we are together."
He nodded. "I still feel really bad about it." He stood, also pulling me to my feet. "I'm your husband. I should be sticking up for you, not watching you get bullied." His arms snaked around me and his lips planted themselves on my forehead.
"Are you saying that you want to come out to the initiates?" I asked.
"Not yet," He whispered. "But if they do what they did today, I'm not holding back."
I pressed my face into the crook of his neck. "Alright. But if one more jealous girl comes after me it's your fault." Then I added with a chuckle. "Oh wait; it's always your fault."
"I'll protect you." He said lovingly.
"Serena really surprised me. I don't even know her."
"According to Zeke she's been talking to Uriah." Tobias informed me. "She knows that you and he are good friends. She probably also knows that we're together."
"Oh, that explains it." I kept forgetting that Marlene and Uriah are no longer together. Marlene was actually no longer in the Dauntless compound. A few weeks ago, she agreed to go to Erudite to be a part of some study they have going on there. Something about the brain and how specific losses affect it. Apparently after it's done she'll be coming back.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about that.
Marlene was a really good friend. I understand that she was going through a really rough time when she found out that she most likely will never have kids; but that doesn't give her the right to try to steal mine. It's conflicting because even though she attempted to take her, she couldn't go through with it. All I know is that nothing will be the same when she comes back.
"Do you want to bring Carter to dinner tonight? Or do you just want to eat at home?" Tobias asked me.
"Let's bring her. We can pass her around to everyone so that the initiates won't get suspicious." I suggested.
"I'm sure she'll enjoy that." Tobias said. "She loves Zeke."
I smirked. "Yeah, and I love the initiates."
"You go get our daughter and I'll save us some spots." He told me.
I gave him a light kiss on the lips before leaving. Christina was more than happy to hand Carter off to me. Apparently she has been very fussy all day. She calmed down when I picked her up though.
"Are you coming to lunch?" I asked Christina.
"No," she yawned. "I'm taking a nap. Carter wore me out."
I laughed, said goodbye, and started towards the cafeteria. Carter was giggling uncontrollably even though I haven't said anything to her. "What's up with you, little girl?" I asked while poking her in the belly. "Why are you so happy?" I already knew though. She's been like this since she got back. Carter adjusted to being back with Tobias and me rather quickly and became super happy almost every time she saw us.
When I got to the cafeteria, I found that Tobias had saved me a spot and grabbed a tray of food.
When I came into view, Uriah shouted, "Hey, it's Carter! Let me hold my goddaughter!"
I passed her over to Uriah and let him gush over her. He would be a great father someday. You could see it in the way he looked at my daughter. There was so much love and adoration even though she wasn't his own.
I picked at my food absently, not really paying attention to it. I could feel the initiates staring at our table, trying to figure out which male was the father of my child.
"Six," Tobias whined. "I thought that you made me Carter's godfather?"
I didn't have to worry about confusion within my friends. They all knew that we were trying to keep our relationship a secret.
Tobias and Uriah bantered back and forth about who was Carter's true godfather. "Sorry Uri, Four is actually her godfather." I lied.
"Ha!" Tobias shouted. "Now hand her over."
Once Tobias had our daughter, she was back to giggling. Tobias bounced her on his knee lightly. Carter stuck her chubby little hand in his mashed potatoes and Tobias just smiled and let her ruin his food. The sight was worth smiling about.
"Do you like potatoes Carter?" he cooed. He continued to baby talk her for a while. Carter had successfully created a big mess on Tobias' tray and had begun to start on mine when I finally decided that it was time to go.
"Awwww," Tobias and Uriah complained simultaneously.
"Uri, give me your napkin." I said. "I don't want potatoes all over my clothes." I looked down to find Carter's hands were already on me.
Uriah couldn't suppress his amusement. "Too late!"
-Last Day of Simulations-
"Initiates! This is the last day of simulations!" I announced. "That means that, after today, there is only two days of initiation left."
There were a few anxious murmurs among the kids. Almost all of them had struggled with the simulations at one point or another. I was surprised to find that only one was Divergent. Serena. She told me on the second day. According to her, I'm trustworthy since I'm friends with Uriah. She's lucky that she's right.
We were just about to start when there was a knock on the door. I opened it and found Christina and Carter. She had been coming in everyday because she couldn't get Carter to calm down. I wasn't surprised that she had shown up, but I had only dropped her off about 45 minutes ago.
"She started wailing as soon as you had left." Christina explained. "Nothing I did would help."
"Give her too me." I insisted. Usually she calmed down right away. Today I didn't even put a dent in her crying."
"Can't you get that little bastard to shut the hell up?" an initiate shouted. Dustin. What an asshole.
Before I could come up with a snarky comment, Tobias had him up against the wall and his hand around Dustin's throat.
"Don't you ever call that little girl a bastard ever again." He growled menacingly. Dustin looked terrified. He wasn't accustomed to having a hand on his neck.
"Four." I said sharply. "Let him go." Tobias looked at me, a wild gleam in his eyes. He softened when he noticed that Carter's cries had intensified.
He released Dustin and stood, his arms outstretched. I handed Carter to him and he started to whisper to her. She was still red-faced and fat tears were rolling down her cheeks, but the wailing had stopped.
Dustin suddenly stood, hurling insults at Tobias. I pushed him back down onto the bench and he looked up at me, startled.
"You want to know why that baby cries like that?" I asked him. "She needs to be reassured that her parents are still here."
"So does that mean that Four is her father?" an initiate asked, gesturing to him.
"Yes," I revealed. "Four is Carter's father. He is also my husband. Carter is not a bastard." I said, glaring at Dustin. He, surprisingly, looked fairly guilty.
"So why does she need to know that you're here?" asked Serena.
I looked at Tobias and he nodded, as if to say that I could tell the story.
"I'm sure all of you heard about the bomb that went off in the compound a few months ago. Before that happened, representatives from each faction came over to assess us. The Candor representative, Bella Lynn Sawyer, tried to warm up to Four. He rejected her and she became jealous. She left, but only for a while." I paused, not wanting to remember that I had believed Bella's story. "She came back, but this time, she was pregnant. She produced a piece of paper saying that Four was the father, making me think that he had cheated on me. We figured out that she was lying, and Four tricked her into thinking that he wanted to be with her."
"Worst night of my life," Tobias added humorlessly.
"Bella left again. Only to come back, again. This time, she teamed up with one of my friends. This friend was in the middle of a tragedy. She had just found out that she would most likely never have children. They had a plan to steal Carter. My friend couldn't follow through so Bella carried out the plan by herself. She stole my daughter and brought her to my parents, pretending to be factionless. She didn't think my parents had any contact with me. Carter was gone for four months. And then my parents came for visiting day to see their grandchild. They didn't know that they were actually sheltering her. Carter got used to them being with her all the time, so when we had to leave to go work, she felt abandoned. She doesn't know what's going one. She's had two sets of parents and she just wants to be near the ones she has now."
"That's a lie." Someone said quietly.
"Excuse me?" I asked.
Xander lifted his head.
"You're lying." He said. "Bella's my sister. She said that you'd come up with some lie to get away from actual truth. She told me everything."
Plot twist! Ok, so like I said earlier, please leave suggestions and I may just succumb to your wishes of another baby. Love you guys!
