Chapter 59

"Xander," I said sharply. "Come here."

The kid looked confident when he rose and walked over. We stood face to face. Unfortunately he was taller, forcing me to have to look up at him, lessening my intimidation factor.

"Tell me your story Xander." I demanded.

He cleared his throat and began. "My full name is Xander Ramirez. My birth faction is Candor. Bella Lynn Sawyer is my half-sister; different dads. We are very close. She tells me everything. Including how you two played her."

"Oh, now please explain to me how we did that."

"You were right about how Bella liked your husband, but what you forgot to mention how he actually did sleep with her and used her to have a baby. You also forgot to mention how it wasn't your friend who couldn't get pregnant, it was you." He announced.

There was a collective gasp from the initiates.

I looked over at Tobias. Xander was lucky that he was holding Carter. The murderous look in his eyes was starting to make me a tad bit nervous.

"Now Xander, that's quite a story. Actually, it's bullshit. That baby is my biological daughter. Ask the doctor that delivered her." I said angrily.

"The doctor that you paid off," he corrected.

I laughed crudely. "Tell me exactly what Bella told you Xander. I want to hear what other messed up lies she told you."

"She's Candor!" he exclaimed. "She can't lie!"

"Not every Candor tells the complete truth." I snapped. "Now tell me what she told you!"

His brown eyes were electric with anger. I saw his fists clench at his sides and immediately I strategized what I would do if he attacked me. I didn't have to act on it though, for he relaxed and started talking.

"When Bella came here to try and fix Dauntless, she didn't think that she'd fall in love. Sure, your husband's physical features were enough to make any girl swoon, but that's not what she talked about. She loved to talk about their deep conversations."

I scoffed. Tobias wasn't deep with anyone; except me. Xander glared at me, and then continued.

"Bella tried to stop her feelings. She knew that he was married, but he insisted that they continue on with the affair. Then a few days before the bomb went off, Bella found out that she was pregnant. She was nervous, scared, but most of all, she was ecstatic. Four felt the same way, but not for the same reason. His plan all along was for Bella to get pregnant, then when she was far enough along, he'd bring her back to Dauntless, have her give birth, then he would take the baby and raise it with Six. Bella would then be disposed of."

"Six, take Carter so I can help show this kid a lie from the truth." Tobias said angrily.

I shot him a look, but that didn't take away his rigid posture.

"Go on." I urged, trying to stay as calm as possible.

"Four thought it would be safer for Bella to go back to Candor. That way there would be no suspicion. Not that anyone would think that Four would ever cheat on his beloved wife. But is it cheating if the wife was in on it?"

I tapped my chin as if I was contemplating his explanation. "Question. How do you account for all of my friends seeing me pregnant?"

"Easy." Xander shrugged. "Fake belly. They make very convincing models. Even ones that can mimic a baby's kicks."

Well maybe you should have realized that your sister was wearing one of those convincing bellies, I thought.

"When Bella came back to Dauntless, she had to make up a story. She said that she was back for some legal business. She didn't really delve deeper than that. Bella was going to her secret meeting place with Four. On her way, she passed Four and Six, who were talking about her. She heard what they were going to do to her and she tried to run. Obviously she failed. They let her see the baby before they killed her. She took the chance and escaped, taking the baby to a random Abnegation family. She knew that they'd come after her and the baby if she kept it. Bella had no idea that family was Six's parents."

Well, he just revealed that I'm a former Abnegation. Thanks. The room was silent. Xander was looking down at me. I was looking up at him. Neither of us wanted to look away first. Good thing I'm a very intimidating instructor.

The first thing I noticed was that Xander didn't say anything about twins. Hopefully if I called him out on it he would slip up.

"Bella gave birth to one baby?" I asked.

Xander looked confused. "Yes, that baby girl." He said while pointing at Carter. "She wanted to name her Lily."

Tobias saw where I was going with this and stood, walking over to me. Xander took a defensive step backwards. He hadn't forgotten what Tobias did to Dustin, the boy who kicked Xander's ass in a fight.

"So you're telling us that Bella wasn't pregnant with twins?" he confirmed.

"Yes! I've already said that!"

"Then why did Bella come bragging to us about the twins that Four impregnated her with?" I questioned.

Xander hesitated. He wasn't prepared for this. "You're lying." He insisted.

"I have a whole cafeteria of witnesses." I informed him. "And a document that says that she was pregnant with twins. And before you say that I was the one that created it, remember that I still have that whole cafeteria of witnesses. They saw her give it to me."

"So one died during birth. It was just too painful for her to tell me!"

"But I thought that she told you everything? Surely she would've told you that there were two babies." Xander was starting to get flustered. A few more jabs and he would break. "Come Xander. Let's go to the infirmary and have them do a DNA test on me and Carter. You can watch the whole time to make sure that we don't mess with the results."

The sixteen year old nodded. "Let's go right now. Four can run the simulations. You and Carter can leave with me."

I nodded at Tobias and took our daughter from him. Xander left first, most likely to make sure that I wouldn't try to run.

"This is ridiculous you know." I told him.

"Nervous because she isn't actually yours?" he asked.

"Nervous because your sister lied to you?" I shot back. That shut him up.

When we got to the infirmary, I requested Doctor Hart. He delivered Carter and would help back up my story. He wasn't pleased when he found out that Bella forged his name and temporarily broke up his favorite patients.

"What can I do for you today?" he asked, shooting a questioning glance at Xander.

"This initiate here is under the impression that Carter isn't actually my daughter. He's related to someone that we both strongly dislike." I said. "Someone who faked a pregnancy to try and make me break up with Four."

"Candor's lie more than I thought." He said while chuckling. "I can confirm that Carter is actually Six's daughter young man. I assume though, that you think that she paid me off?"

Xander nodded. Fear was starting to set in. I could see it on his face.

"A simple blood test will confirm it. Six, your arm please." I held it out, barely feeling the prick of the needle. Carter, on the other hand, wasn't so willing to part with her blood. She squirmed and cried and fussed without pause until it was finally over.

We followed Doctor Hart into the lab. He typed some data into a computer and fiddled with the blood samples. I had no idea what he was doing. I may have an aptitude for Erudite, but I'd rather just stick to the Dauntless and Abnegation parts of me.

"This is going to take a little bit." He informed us. "Watch closely Xander. Make sure that I'm not tampering with anything."

The wait was fairly long, like promised. What Xander saw obviously didn't sit well with him because he stormed out and pushed over a cart of surgical instruments on his way out.

"Thank you Doctor."

"No problem Tris." He patted my shoulder. "People just have it out for you, don't they?"

I just laughed and exited. "Well what do you know." I said to Carter. "I guess I really am your mom!"

Instead of going back to the initiates, I headed straight back to the apartment. It wasn't long before Tobias showed up too.

"Is she sleeping?" he asked quietly.

I nodded, smiling. It was obvious what he wanted. He picked me up and carried me into the bedroom.

I forgot that he was another person; instead it felt like he was another part of me, just as essential as a heart or an eye or an arm. I pulled his shirt up and over his head. I ran my hands over the skin I exposed like it was my own.

We are one. And no one could ever break us apart. Always, we'll pick up our pieces and fit them back together. No matter what had happened to break them in the first place.

"I love you. So much." I whispered against his mouth.

I felt his smirk as he replied. "I know. And I love you more."

"Not possible." I flipped him over onto his back and took control.

-Page Break-

Gently, I shook Tobias awake.

"What is it Tris?" he said grumpily.

"I'm going to take Carter for a walk before we talk to the initiates." I told him.

He nodded and rolled back over.

Carter was an awkward baby. Every morning I would walk into her room. Every morning she would be staring up at me, not moving, not making a sound. It made me feel like she didn't sleep, instead just staring up at the mobile above her crib.

"C'mon little girl." I cooed softly. "Let's go for a stroll.

We ended up visiting Tori at the tattoo parlor. Tori absolutely adored Carter, and she wasn't a very sensitive person.

On our way back, I got the sense that someone was following me. I was constantly checking over shoulder, but no one was there. I was only a few minutes away from my apartment when I heard him.

"Six stop!" he shouted.

I didn't need to turn around. It didn't take a genius to figure out who it was. I knew that Xander wasn't going to give up that easily.

"Give me the baby." He ordered.

"Excuse me?" I was still facing the opposite direction.

"You heard me. Give me Carter." Xander was drunk. He was slurring his speech.

"Now what makes you think I'm going to handover my daughter to an unstable sixteen year old such as yourself?" I asked him.

"She's not yours!" he screamed. "And I suggest you give her to me unless you want her to end up dead in a few minutes!"

I turned to see the barrel of a gun pointed at me.

Ok, now for the important stuff. If you go on my profile, you'll see a list of names. Please look at them and pick out some that you like. You can either review or PM your choices. I REALLY NEED YOU GUYS TO DO THIS FOR ME PLEASE!

There is one more thing. This story is coming to an end. NOT YET. DON'T WORRY. But unfortunately, it's only got about ten chapters or so left. I'm really upset about this, since this story is a huge part of me. But I also have other news. I WILL BE WRITING A SEQUEL! Now I need possible titles for it. If you think of something please tell me. It will be easier to come up with something later though. Please help!

P.S. Did you notice the section from Allegiant that I slipped in there?

LOVE YOU ALWAYS!
