Ok I had this done days ago and I'm just posting it now. Feel free to come at me with any weapons that you would like. Maybe I'll post another chapter tonight to make up for it. No promises though.

Chapter 60

"I'm taking that baby back to her real mother." Xander told me.

"I'm not letting you take her anywhere." I said as calmly as I could manage. Xander was on the other side of the hallway. There was a very strong chance that he would shoot me if I tried to run. Sure he was drunk, but that didn't mean that he would miss.

It was in my best interest to try and talk him down. The only problem is that I had nowhere to put Carter. If I kept her in front of me, Xander could easily hit her if he shot at us.

"My only reason for coming to Dauntless was to find out what had happened to my sisters baby." He slurred. "She didn't know that. But she'll be glad once I bring back Lily."

"Carter." I corrected gently.

"NO!" he shouted. "HER NAME IS LILY!" He gripped the gun tighter, his hand shaking slightly.

I decided then that I would pretend to agree with him. I'd say what he wanted to hear.

"Aright." I said calmly. "I'm sure that Bella would like to see Lily very much."

Xander cocked his head, confused that I suddenly agreed with him. He straightened again and smirked. His being drunk worked to my advantage. Now Xander thinks that he has me confessing. He won't doubt me if I comply with handing Carter over.

I took a tentative step towards Xander. If I could get close enough, I could take his gun away. The downside was that it would also bring him closer to Carter, and if he managed to take her, I wasn't sure if I could risk possibly shooting her to bring him down. It was a gamble, but a gamble that I was forced to trust in.

"You were right Xander. Four and I did take Lily from Bella." I lied. "And for that, I am sorry. I deprived you of your niece."

"Damn right you're sorry." Xander laughed. "I'm really glad you admitted it. That will make shooting you a lot easier."

Despite what he said, I slowly continued towards him. "I deserve it for what I did. I took an innocent baby away from her mother." I said cautiously.

"And now you're reuniting them. Who would've thought?" He sounded confident. Wow. He must be really drunk if he thinks that I'm just going to hand over the little girl to him, even though I supposedly spent so much effort trying to take her in the first place. And then I'm going to let him shoot me. Xander was definitely no Erudite.

Hopefully no one, especially Tobias, would show up. That could ruin the whole plan, and get someone killed in the process.

"Get over here!" Xander demanded.

I nuzzled Carter into the crook of my neck and whispered a fake goodbye. I closed the distance between Xander and myself at a steady pace. Right now, the barrel of the gun was being pressed to my forehead.

"Give me the baby." Xander told me.

"Alright," I said. My voice was just starting to get shaky. This was it. If I didn't manage to wrestle the gun away from Xander, I would most likely die and Carter would be taken once again.

Tobias would be crushed if that happened.

"Goodbye baby," I said it mostly for Xander, but also just in case it was the last thing I could say to Carter.

I advanced as if I was going to hand her over. He still had the gun pointed at my head. This is what I was counting on.

Curling Carter back into me, I grabbed Xander's wrist and slammed his hand into the wall, effectively making him drop the gun. Surprisingly, he recovered quite quickly; especially for being drunk. He used his other hand to try to punch me. It only connected with my shoulder thankfully. The punch barely did anything, just evoking a small throb.

I kicked him where it counts, causing him to double over in pain. Quickly, I snatched up the gun and aimed it at him.

"It's over Xander." I snarled. "You're not taking my daughter anywhere."

When Xander looked up at me I saw confusion. "But you just admitted to stealing her!"

"I lied." I said through my teeth. "Aren't you supposed to be able to tell when someone is lying, Candor?"

What surprised me was that I saw tears streaming down his face. The kid was sobbing into his hands now. I couldn't tell what the tears were for though. For Bella? Carter? His dignity?

"I just wanted to do something!" he sobbed. "I thought Bella was telling the truth. She was so convincing!"

Was Xander saying that he now believed that I was telling the truth? This kid is a wreck. If he hadn't of been holding a gun to my head only a minute ago, I may have felt sorry for him. He was still on the floor, defenseless, so I lowered the gun. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do next. Should I go find Tobias? Or should I go straight to one of the Dauntless leaders?

My question was answered when I heard a voice call out to me from the end of the hall.

"Tris?" It was Tobias. "Is everything alright?"

I turned around and faced him. What a sight this must look like. Me holding both Carter and a gun. Xander, the boy who accused us of stealing his sister's baby, on the ground, crying his eyes out. I opened my mouth to explain when the gun was taken from my hand and an arm snaked around my throat.

"Shouldn't you be able to tell when someone is actually drunk?" Xander snickered. "I knew you'd never willingly give me that baby. I just can't believe you thought that I was stupid enough to think that I could get her back without any trouble."

"If you hurt either of them, you're dead." Tobias growled.

"If you take another step then you're stupid wife's head will get blown off!" Xander threatened back.

Tobias' eyes widened, and I narrowed mine in confusion. Surely what Xander said wouldn't intimidate him enough for him to actually show it.

But obviously that's what Xander thought.

Tobias had actually seen Max coming up behind us.

"Let them go." Max's deep voice commanded. I heard a bullet slid into the chamber a gun. Not the one that was being aimed at me.

"Let them go!" Max repeated. I could feel Xander tense up. He had not been expecting the most important Dauntless leader to show up. Slowly, oh so slowly, the sixteen year old lowered his weapon. His grip on my neck loosened. I slammed my elbow into his gut and scurried over towards Tobias. As he wrapped his arms around me I turned my head to see Max leading the initiate away.

"Are you alright?" Tobias asked while taking Carter from me. Shockingly, she'd been fairly calm during this whole ordeal. She was one tuff little baby. At barely five months old, she's suffered through chest tubes, a kidnapping, new parents, being returned to her real parents, and now being held at gun point. She hadn't even let out a whimper!

"Yes," I told him truthfully. Xander hadn't hurt me. He just threatened to kill me and steal my baby. No biggie.

"Let Max take care of Xander." He insisted. "We need to go introduce the initiates to the fear landscapes."

"No breaks in Dauntless." I joked. "You almost get killed and you still have to go to work."

Tobias laughed too. "I'll walk to Christina's with you. That way no psycho initiates can attack you."

"They can still attack me," I said sassily.

Tobias kissed both mine and Carter's foreheads. "That may be, but now you'll have your big, strong, and extremely sexy husband to protect you." He flashed me a charming smile and ushered me towards Christina's apartment.

I smirked at him and loosely intertwined my hand with his.

"Is it bad that's it's barely eight in the morning and I'm ready for bed?" I asked him.

"Not if I'd get to join you."

I really wish I could actually know you guys. That would be so awesome. I'll go start on that chapter now. Hopefully I'll finish it. Love you!
