HEY! I'm back from vacation! It was great and horrible at the same time. And most likely no updates until next week probably, I'll be gone all weekend and I'm not sure what my schedule is for the rest of the week.

Chapter 63

"I lost my family in the Amity Fire." Serena informed me, even though I had already come to that conclusion. "I watched them die."

"I'm very sorry." I said with sympathy, although I know that she didn't come here for that.

She nodded. "You'd think that afterwards, I'd be afraid of fire."

"That would be understandable." I agreed.

"But that's not it." she said. "When they died, I was supposed to be with them. I had snuck away from our house that night. When I saw the flames, I ran back; but I was too late. I saw them burn to death. I heard my younger siblings scream in pain and terror. And I wasn't there with them."

Serena was on the verge of tears. It was heartbreaking to witness.

"During my fear, I was back in Amity. My youngest sibling was standing in front of me. When I saw him, I sank to my knees. I looked up and the rest of my family appeared. Out of nowhere, all of them just burst in to flames."

I reached over and handed her a tissue, which she took gratefully. It took a few minutes before she was able to continue.

"I couldn't do anything. When I reached out to them, I couldn't touch them without getting burned. I couldn't save them! I heard their screams again and again. It was impossible to calm down, I just, I just couldn't save them and it tore me apart."

I looked at her. The strong, Divergent girl was sobbing into her hands. I understood what her fear was, although others probably wouldn't. I also know why she transferred. "You're afraid of not being able to save people." I concluded. "You came here, not just because of your aptitude, but because you thought if you became tougher, you'd be able to save people."

She nodded. I could tell that this was hard for her to admit. It's hard for anyone to admit their greatest fears.

"It's also why you're with Uriah." I ventured. When she shot me a look I added, "At least at first. Your intention was to become someone he could rely on. Someone he could talk to about anything. You wanted to save him. You knew that he was falling into darkness because of Marlene. You never thought that you'd actually come to care for him. Or even fall in love with him."

Serena looked surprised by my observation. "You're very good at reading people." She told me.

"I'm very observant." I admitted. "I subconsciously, okay not completely subconsciously, look for a person's strengths and weaknesses. When I say that to people, they think that I'm trying to exploit them; but really I'm just too curious for my own good."

Serena stared at me for a while. I think that she was wondering whether she should be nervous or impressed. She blinked and then began describing the tattoo that she wanted.

"I want the Amity symbol," she said while pointing at the picture in the design book. "but I want it to be much bigger. Also, I want it to be engulfed in flames."

To me, this tattoo would have just been a painful reminder of this tragedy, but to Serena, this was a tribute.

"And along the inside border of the flames, I want their names. My parents and my younger siblings."

After she gave me all eight names of her family members, I showed her the sketch I had made. A single tear slid down her cheek as she looked at it. She gestured to her back and lay down on the table. After she thanked me and left, I noticed a small pool of tears.

"Tobias?" I began as we were sitting on the couch together.

"Yeah?" Tobias was practicing his hair braiding, which he was surprisingly good at.

"I want to talk about baby names." I said.

"Really?" Tobias sounded surprised. "You never want to talk about the baby."

He was right. I felt that if I talked about it too much, I would jinx it. I scared myself just thinking about it. But I wanted to be a little more prepared this time. I told this to Tobias.

"Alright." He put my hair down and placed a hand on his chin, thinking hard about this. "For a girl, how about Breanna? Or Kalyn?"

"I like Kalyn." I said. "But I also like Peyton."

Tobias nodded in agreement. "So for a girl it's between Peyton and Kalyn. For a boy I like Asher."

"Ew, no." I said. "Asher Eaton. That just sounds weird. What about Hunter? Or Nate?"

"I hate both of those." Tobias told me.

We went back and forth with the boys names. Neither of us would give in and neither of u could come to a solution that we both agreed on. It seemed like if the baby was a boy it would be nameless.

Tobias sighed. "If it is a boy,"

"Which it will be!" I interrupted.

"Maybe. Then I guys we'll just have to decide when he arrives."

"Fine." I gave him a quick kiss and left to pick up Carter. Both Tobias and I got off of work early and Christina wasn't expecting us until later so we just used our time to sit and talk. "Christina?" I called as I knocked. "I'm here for Carter."

My friend opened the door and thrust my child into my arms. "Thank God. Take her!"

"What's your problem?" I asked while laughing.

"She's got Will in some kind of trance! He won't leave her alone!" She dropped her voice to a whisper. "She's ruining my sex life."

I burst out into laughter. "Well it's obvious that Will just wants a daughter." Christina's looked at me like I was a genius.

"You're right!" she exclaimed. "I'll just tell him to stop staring at yours so we can start making our own."

Before she could close the door I asked a question. "Christina, are you saying that you and Will are having sex while my kid is here?"

Christina gave me a startled look. "Of-of course not."

I just stared at her until she shut the door. I looked down at Carter who was staring at me intently. "Christina is very inappropriate isn't she?"

Carter, still staring, didn't answer. Not that I thought she would. Sometimes I wondered what she was thinking, because she always seemed to be off in her own little world.

When I got back to the apartment, Tobias was napping on the couch, snoring slightly.

"Let's wake up daddy, ok?" I whispered to Carter. I cradled her to my chest and jumped squarely on Tobias' chest. He grunted as the wind got knocked out of him. I hopped off and he rolled onto the floor.

"What was that for?" he wheezed.

I tried to look as innocent as possible. "Don't blame me," I said, sounding like a small child. "It was Carter's idea."

Tobias took Carter into his arms. "That was very rude of you little girl." He cooed. "Obviously you're going to be just like your mother."

"I hope not." I countered. "Then she'll constantly be getting attacked."

"Good point. Just kidding Carter. Don't be like your mom. I forbid you."

"Try not to be Divergent either." I added in a whisper. Tobias shot me a look and I shrugged. Although the threat level was going down, Divergents weren't completely safe. Especially in Erudite and Dauntless. Jeanine may be factionless, but that doesn't make me feel any safer. I can almost guarantee that she's still calling most of the shots in Erudite. We still had to be very careful.

"Christina is doing inappropriate things with our daughter in the room. Or at least trying to anyways." I said in order to change the subject.

"Tell her to do that on her own time, not when there are very small children in the room."

"You tell her." I decided that I was going to be sassy for the rest of the day.

"She's your friend." Tobias retorted.

"She's your friend too Tobias."

"Fine! Neither of us will tell her."

"Whoa, calm down." I said, laughing nervously. Tobias was actually getting angry. "Don't know why you're mad right now."

"Sorry," he said truthfully. "I'm just stressing. I'm wishing that we would've waited to have another baby right now. I'm just really nervous about how our lives will change."

I sat down, gesturing for him to sit beside me.

"I've been thinking about that too. Either this year or the next will be my last year training initiates." I revealed. "Five years with those brats is long enough. And besides, it isn't fair to Christina to dump two kids on her when she already has one and is trying for another."

"That is true," Tobias agreed. "And I'm sure Tori would understand if you needed less hours at the tattoo parlor. She understands that kids are needy."

"And lots of people work there anyways." I added. "I'm putting Carter to bed and then I'm taking a nap."

"I'll 'nap' with you." Tobias said.

I put my hand on his chest to stop him.

"Not today, buddy." I said. "Wait until we need another surprise kid."

"So you want more than two?" he inquired.

"Absolutely not." I said. "That's why I said surprise."

I didn't like this chapter. At all. It literally took me like ten hours to write. And since I'm having that struggle, there is most likely going to only be three or four more chapters. Sorry! But remember, there will be a sequel. I can't have you guys hating me for long time. Love you!
