Chapter 8 - Wrong
There's something wrong with me chemically
Something wrong with me inherently
The wrong mix in the wrong genes
I reached the wrong ends by the wrong means
It was the wrong plan
In the wrong hands
With the wrong theory for the wrong man
The wrong lies, on the wrong vibes
The wrong questions with the wrong replies
Bella's POV
Whenever I thought I was going to lose it, Carlisle was the one I went to. He knew how to calm me, his touch, his voice, his smell, all of him gave me peace. But I didn't have him to go to this time, not only was he in another country, but there was the fact that I would have to admit that I had an affair. I didn't want to lose Carlisle and I'm not sure he would stay with me if he knew what I had done last night.
I had to leave Edward, I needed to think, so I cleaned up our mess and left when he fell asleep. I got home, thinking that a shower would wash away how dirty I felt, but it didn't work. So I left the house and I went to the beach in the middle of the night and I've been here ever since. Hours have gone by and if I could cry I'd be a heap of blubbering mess, the guilt and pain was eating me alive. Carlisle has loved me unconditionally, he has spent years and years taking care of me and investing in me and I feel as if I just threw it all away.
"Do you know how long I've been looking for you?" Alice's voice sounded behind me.
I didn't respond.
"It's going to be fine, Bella." She said it as if she was annoyed.
"It won't be fine, I made the stupid mistake of believing that this wouldn't cause any damage. I have to tell him, I have to tell Carlisle and I have to be okay with him…"
"He won't leave you, Carlisle loves you, Carlisle would set off a nuclear missile to destroy the earth if it meant being with you. You're forgetting the fact that I've seen what happens."
"Tell me!" I snapped.
"It would ruin it, if I told you the outcome it could change everything, you know that."
I growled at her and stood up, grabbing her by the throat I lifted her from the ground. "Remember what I said before all of this began." I dropped her back on the ground and I ran off to be alone.
Edward's POV
I woke to the sound of the door opening and I went into panic mode, I looked around, but Bella was gone along with any sign of her being here. I thought about the mess we made and I cursed inwardly. I shot up from the bed and threw on a pair of boxers.
"Babe! I'm home." Tanya's voice rang out.
I came out of the room and was surprised to see everything was back to normal, it was actually a lot cleaner than before.
"Hey, I didn't think you'd be home so soon."
"I know, but I missed you, so after the wedding I came straight home." She looked at me. "Are you just now getting out of bed?"
"What time is it?"
"It's nearly four in the afternoon."
I had to look at the clock to believe her, I can't believe I slept that late. "I had a long night with Emmett."
"Work?"
"Yea, this case we've been working on has been ridiculous."
"I can help you relax," she purred and it did nothing for me.
"I'm honestly still tired and you must be tired from traveling and being in a wedding."
"Yea, I kinda am, I'm going to take a shower."
She kissed me on the cheek and headed to the bedroom. While she took a shower I changed the sheets with the biggest grin, images of Bella and I kept replaying in my mind and I was reminded of why I slept in so late.
My phone rang and I saw that it was Emmett.
"Hey! I want to hear about last night!" Emmett said almost just as excited as I was.
"I can't talk about it, meet me at Charlie's Grill in an hour."
"I'll be there."
We hung up and I finished getting rid of the sheets that Bella and I wrestled in. I put on new sheets and when Tanya got out of the shower I hopped in after her and got ready to meet with Emmett.
When Emmett and I met up we got a table and waited for the waiter to take our orders before the topic of Isabella Swan came up. I told him everything from the date all the way up to the point of me waking up an hour ago.
"Have you heard from her?" he asked.
"No, I have no idea when she left either, I didn't even hear her cleaning, all I know is that I'm thankful that she got up before I did because I'd be screwed if she hadn't."
"You think she's done this before?"
No, I just think that's she not an idiot, she's cunning."
"You are one lucky bastard," Emmett shook his head. "I'd be on that like white on rice every chance I could get."
"You think I should call her?"
"Hell yea! Schedule another all-nighter, milk this cow until its bone dry."
He was right, I still had a few weeks with her and I didn't want to lose this chance with her.
"I'll call her later on today." I was already excited for it.
Bella's POV
Turns out my "vacation" was over, a situation arose while Carlisle was in Japan and I've been asked to intervene. I haven't talked to Carlisle, I was too afraid, so I had Alice get the information I needed. I gathered more information on the target and made the decision to terminate him tonight.
I hadn't reached out to Edward and he hasn't called me and I was hoping that he was feeling just as terrible as I was and decided to not go through with this. But like the traitor that I was I inwardly wanted more, I was yearning for the moment my phone would ring and it would be him. It was purely carnal with him, I was attracted to every ounce of his defined body. I didn't understand how something so breakable could have my flesh on fire. It was like my soul ignited with passion when I was near him, my thoughts become incoherent because all I can imagine is him being in me.
Once darkness hit I was out of the house, heading to Downtown L.A. where Richard Cooper was staying in a hotel. Cooper was in town to have a meeting regarding his drug cartel, I was assigned to make sure he didn't make it to that meeting. I arrived at the hotel just as his car pulled up, he had two vehicle escorts with him. He had two men as his personal guard and it seemed two were standing outside of the hotel. I walked inside of the hotel, winking at on the guards that stood at the front door. I watched Cooper at the front desk get his information for his suite.
Once he was on the elevator I made my way to the front desk.
I smiled at the concierge. "Give me the extra key card to Cooper's room and forget my face."
She nodded and handed me the card without the slightest hesitation. I instructed her to give a specific description of who she "saw" when the police asked her questions. She gave me another reassuring nod and I headed to the stairs, running up them so that I wouldn't be seen by the cameras. Once on his floor I was in his room and out of sight before the elevator reached this floor. I listened as the elevator doors opened and Cooper and his men moved towards the room. They unlocked the door, turned on the lights and began searching the suite, I stayed hidden, keeping my eyes on Cooper, waiting for the perfect moment to take action. I kept myself perfectly balanced on a beam that Cooper stood under. I took the opportunity to leap down behind him, my arm went around his neck and he immediately began to fight, but he couldn't escape my grip. His men turned around and pulled out there guns, pointing them at me.
"Hello gentlemen."
"Let me go now and you're death won't be painful."
"I don't think you're in a position to bargain. Get your other two goons up here," I grabbed his shoulder and took the bone from its socket, Cooper tried to let out a scream, but I hit in the throat to prevent it from coming out. He began to sputter and cough violently.
"If they contact the police I'll remove his femur from his pelvis." They obeyed, telling the other two to come up.
"Drop your guns."
They placed their weapons on the ground. "Very good."
I removed the other shoulder from its socket and I squeezed my arm tighter around his throat to quiet his agonized shrieks.
"What do you want?" One of them asked.
"I'll get to that in a moment, open the door and let the other ones in."
I listened as the ones from downstairs rushed down the hall to get to us. They were allowed in and I made them drop their weapons.
"Thank you for your cooperation, now back to business." I tightened my grip on Cooper's neck until his trachea was crushed. I dropped him and listened to his panicked gasping, trying to grab ahold of oxygen, but failing.
His guards rushed at me, I grabbed one of their fist and crushed his bones, grabbing his head I smashed it into one of the other's head with so much force it killed them both in an instant. I threw a kick that sent one through the glass of the balcony door. The last one tried to grab me from behind but I turned and snapped his neck. I walked over to the balcony and grabbed the last one that was alive, I picked him up and tossed him over the balcony. It was my subtle way of letting someone know the police need to be here.
Before I left the hotel I found the security room. I lightly knocked on the door and waited patiently for someone to answer the door. A man in a uniform answered.
"Any video that shows my presence in this hotel needs to be destroyed, when asked what happened you'll only tell Detective Masen and McCarty what I'm about to tell you."
Edward's POV
My plan to call Bella was ruined by a 911 call about a man who fell out of a window, usually I don't respond to these calls, but when we found out that Richard Cooper had just checked into the same hotel, Emmett and I rushed out to the crime scene. Once we were there we found out Richard, along with all of his security detail was killed. He had only been checked in for an hour before he was murdered which meant his murderer wasn't that far.
"I want security footage from the entrance, lobby, stairs and library, somebody talk to the concierge and find out how this bastard got into the hotel room. Interview every single person in the place, find out what the hell happened." Emmett barked the orders and everyone went to work.
We examined the hotel, searching for clue with the crime scene unit, trying to find something that could help us find who did this.
Cooper's arm were completely ripped from their sockets and his throat was crushed and he died from lack of oxygen. Two men had their skulls smashed according to the coroner and one man's neck was snapped.
"This is definitely the same person we've been chasing around," I sighed.
"Detective Mason? McCarty?" a police officer came in. "I spoke with the woman that works the front desk and she has a description of a man that asked for a key card to Cooper's room. We had the sketch artist draw what she described, you're not going to like it."
He handed me the paper and I looked to see that it was a drawing of me, the drawing was uncanny.
"Is this a joke?!" I snapped.
"No, that's who said came and got the key card."
"I've got a security guard here that said he was forced to get rid of the footage that had the killer on them."
"Bring him upstairs now!" I was pissed. How the hell did the concierge know what I looked like? I've never stepped foot in this hotel until tonight and this woman had a perfect description of what I looked like.
The security guard came in. "I was told only to talk to you and Detective McCarty."
"What do you have for us?"
"I saw what the killer looked like. I was also instructed to tell you: 'I have been amused and quite entertained by your efforts to capture me, I would like to tell you that you're getting closer to discovering my identity, but I would be lying. I wish you the best of luck in finding me Masen and McCarty.'"
The sketch artist came up and was ready to do another drawing. I couldn't believe, we were being mocked, an assassin had managed to leave a message for us and somehow managed to get a witness to draw me as a suspect. This wasn't possible, this is something that I refused to believe was possible and yet it was happening.
"It was a woman, she was average height, skinny, but on the frumpy side. Her hair was a red color almost copper colored, it was straight, she had dark green eyes and…."
I tuned him out, I didn't need to hear the rest of the description to know who was being described, I was living with her.
"Someone is trying to set me up."
"No, someone is mocking you, they know you are on the case and they are making fun of you."
"How the hell do they know about Tanya?!"
"I don't know but this means we need to be careful, this could be a threat."
I wanted this killer more than anything now, I was going to do everything in my power to bring this bastard down.
Bella's POV
I was back at the beach. The sun had set and I was encompassed by the darkness, it was fitting for the mood I was in. I looked down at my phone, Carlisle's number was pulled up, all I had to do was call him and tell him what I had done. I sighed and pressed the button, pressing the phone to my ear. The phone rang and I hoped he wouldn't answer, that he was busy.
"Is it done?"
"Yes," I stated.
"Good, I miss you, I saw something that reminded me of you."
"Death?" I asked mocking myself.
"A dress, what's wrong Bella?"
I opened my mouth to speak, to tell him about Edward, but nothing came out.
"Nothing, I miss you and I need you home."
"I know and I'll be home as soon as I can."
"I love you Carlisle, so much it hurts sometimes."
"I love you too," his voice could pull me from any ledge. "I'll talk to you soon."
I hung up the phone and rested my head on my knees, hugging myself. What was I going to do? I was already beyond the point of no return, there was no point in sulking.
I stood up and walked away, as hard as it was I needed to trust Alice, she said that I wouldn't lose Carlisle and I had to believe that she was right. My phone rang and it was Edward Masen.
"Detective Masen."
"Are you free tonight, I need to get my mind off of work."
I could walk away from this right now, I could tell Masen to go home to Alice and forget our arrangement, I could tell him that I made a terrible mistake and I regret it all, but I would be lying to him.
"Where are you?"
"In my office, but I can meet you somewhere," there was anger in his voice, something that I wasn't used to hearing from him.
"I'll contact you soon." I hung up the phone and made my way to Edward.
Edward's POV
The precinct was busy with the murder of Robert Cooper and the four men with him, we were using every clue we could find hoping that one would bring us to the answer we were searching for. After hours of combing through every inch of information I was ready to flip my desk. Once again we were left with nothing and it had me angrier than I have ever been in a long time. How did this person know who I was? How did they know who Tanya was? Were they following me?
Before I could back into the same questions I've been asking myself for hours, my phone went off, it was Bella.
"Go to the bathroom," her voice came quickly and she hung up the phone.
I looked around and saw that everyone was focused on their own work, I stood and made my way to the bathroom. I stepped inside in the dark room and I didn't hear anything, I heard movement behind me and my hand flew to my gun. I was pushed against the wall, Bella's familiar scent rushing into my nose. Her lips fell on mine, igniting the lust had been dormant since earlier this morning. Her hands were pulling at my pants.
"How did you get in here?"
"I have my ways, not shut up and get out of your pants." Her voice was low, her mouth right falling back onto mine. I managed to get my pants to my ankle, turning us to get her pressed against the wall. Her legs were around my waist, her pants and underwear gone, she was already ready for me and so was I.
"No briefs tonight?" she whispered, I could hear the smirk in her voice.
"I had a feeling and I left them at home." My hands went on her waist and I pushed her down onto me. I heard her sigh, her way of telling me she wanted it just as much as I did, but I wanted it more. I found her neck and nibbled on the skin, licking upwards until I reached her lips. My tongue found hers and they fought while I drove into her, my hands holding tightly onto her hips to thrust deeper and harder. Her gasps escaping in short bursts. Her orgasm came and I couldn't help but cum with her. She kissed me hard, laughing lightly.
"I've been fighting this since I left you this morning, I wasn't supposed to come back."
"Why?"
"You don't feel guilty? You don't feel wrong about this?" She asked. I didn't, I didn't feel guilt or shame.
"I told you how I felt about Tanya, you love Carlisle, it's a difference."
"Then why I am here Masen?"
There was a moment of silence between us. "I don't know, but I would be lying if I said I didn't want you here."
"So would I."
We pulled away and I could barely see her walk away. "You never told me how you got in here without being seen." I pulled up my pants and fastened them.
"I have my ways. I'll be seeing you soon Detective Masen."
I moved to turn on the lights and I searched for her, but she was gone. I looked in each stall, but she was in none of them. The only explanation was the window, but it was too high from the floor and we were on the third floor of the building.
I exited from the bathroom and headed outside to further investigate. I ran down the flight of stairs and left the building, jogging around the building to the side where the bathroom window was. Once there I looked up, there was no way she could've have gone out the window, if she would've jumped she would have seriously injured herself, possibly even dying. I wanted to call her and ask her how she managed to get in and out of the bathroom, but I had a feeling I still wouldn't get an answer. I would've seen her leave out of the door, so would have everyone else, so that wasn't an option either.
"Edward?" I looked away from the window and Emmett was staring at me with confusion.
"Do you think someone can jump from that window?" I asked pointing to the window.
"Why?"
"No, right? You could easily break something, there's no way anyone is walking away from a thirty foot jump and walk away just fine."
"Once again…Why are you asking?"
Because Bella did it and by the lack of her presence, she walked away unharmed.
"The bigger question is how can you make it up there?" I said asking myself more so than Emmett, he wasn't even helping at this point. There was two windows below the one she would've entered and exited from, but I still don't think it was possible.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, let's just go back in and work on this case." My mind was racing, Bella was a mysterious woman and it seemed the more time I spent with her the more mysterious she became.
