It was better outside, Beast Boy decided. The sky above was only a couple of shades lighter than the cathedral, and the grass under his feet was sparse and the dirt rocky. But he felt freer, lighter than he did in the nave with tons of rock soaring over his head and the almost suffocating air of expectancy as Patience sat, just... waiting.
I wonder how long she's been there.
A soft whistle distracted him and he saw Cyborg, gesturing him over to where Raven, Brave, Timid, and Rage stood huddled around Wisdom, who remained ensconced on her bench. There seemed to be some kind of argument going on, which Cyborg confirmed as soon as Beast Boy reached him.
"They're trying to figure out where to go first," he said gloomily, shaking his head. "We'll be here all day and night. Assuming there is a night," he added, glancing at the gray clouds overhead.
"There's someplace to go besides here?"
"Yeah," Cyborg said. "They all have different – kingdoms, I guess. We went to a few, remember?" They both grimaced, remembering being attacked by stone guards, birds, and worse. "They live here but they have their own places, too. Brave wants to find her sword, and Rage wants her fire back, and Timid -"
Beast Boy looked at Timid, hunched so tightly inside her cloak that she looked like she might disappear. "- she wants her bear. Where does Raven want to go?"
Cyborg half-smiled. "Probably home. I get the feeling she thinks her Sides are kind of embarrassing."
"They're okay." Beast Boy considered Rage. "Most of them. But we should be -" he stopped. A sharp smell caught his nose. "Dude, is something -"
Before he could finish his question he was interrupted by a long, terrified shriek. He whirled to see Joy running toward them, screaming, her pink cloak ablaze and filling the courtyard with greasy, rancid smoke.
