Chapter 2: Conversations

"You sure you don't want anything other then tea?" Robin asked Raven. She nodded as her fingertip traced the rim of the mug, staring into it and at the little tea left as if it was telling her something. And all the while she stared down, her couldn't help but stare at her.

She'd pulled her hood down, finally giving him a good look of her face and all its' features. She had a very slight yet obvious widow's peak, as her hair met in the middle at the gem on her forehead, and swooped out to frame her face. Her thin, pale lips were a fine line most often, but held an interesting curve to them on occasion during their conversation when she'd seemingly relax. Her nose was small, eyebrows fine, but by far the most interesting aspect was, of course, her amethyst eyes, that were bigger than any Robin had ever seen. They shone, and though she may not give off my emotion, he was starting to be able to see it in her eyes, and he couldn't help but stare into them.

"So, lets see if I got this right," Robin said to her finally, speaking up again. She looked up from the mug and to his face, her silence told him to continue. "You're from a place called Azarath, and your magic – your powers, you were born with them?"

Raven nodded and Robin exhaled wishfully. "Man, that's gotta be great. Sometimes I wish I had that luxury."

"All power comes with a price," Raven commented, eyes downcast once more. Robin frowned.

"I didn't mean to make it sound like it was easy, I just – "

"No need to explain, I understand," Raven cut him off. She glanced up into his masked eyes once more. "Now it's your turn."

"That's all the information you'll give me, huh?" he chided as she raised an eyebrow, unwavering. He sighed, putting his hands up, "alright, alright, I'm sure I'll learn more eventually. But anyway, there isn't much to tell… other then that I'm from Gotham and once worked with Batman. That's where I learned everything I know," he finished matter-of-factly.

"Impressive," Raven responded before taking another sip of tea, "No wonder you're so cocky. Why did you leave…?"

Robin gave a short shrug, his demeanor changing slightly as he shifted in the booth they were sitting in. "I needed change, like I said… it was time to move on. See new things, do new things… meet new people."

"Fair enough," she said as she set her mug back down, which was now empty.

"What's your favorite thing to do?" Robin blurted out. Raven blinked.

"Read."

"And what's your favorite thing to read?"

"Horror novels. Poetry."

"Who's your favorite poet?"

"Robert Browning."

"And what do you hate?"

"People who try to get too close to me," she flatly said, her lips curving up in the slightest that he took note of. Just as he was about to speak again, she continued as she pushed herself up to stand, "So if you excuse me, thank you for the tea, but I really should be –"

Suddenly there was a bright and abnormal green light that illuminated the sky, zipping across it right in front of the diner window. Robin and Raven stared out the window and froze, watching it for a second as it crashed a few blocks away. Both of them gave each other a look of bewilderment, surprised by the sudden event.

"I you don't want to be here anymore as you keep pressing on about, but I'd really like it if you checked out whatever that light was with me," Robin told her, standing up as well now, a serious tone overtaking him. Raven simply stood there and didn't respond, looking away from him with narrowed eyes and confusion all over her face. Robin sighed and turned to go.

"It was really nice to meet you, Raven."

And with that he ran out the swinging doors, down the road.

He wished he'd hadn't been so hasty and pushy towards her, but he couldn't help the adrenaline he felt at what he just saw – and maybe even worse, also couldn't take it that she'd practically just rejected his offer on working together. With this in mind, he continued to run down the sidewalk in the direction he'd seen the strange green light go in, legs taking him as fast as they could onward.

"Robin!"

The sudden voice behind him surprised him and he stopped, glancing back over his shoulder to see Raven levitating towards him, putting her hood up. He felt a small smile on his face appearing.

"I guess it couldn't hurt to check it out… together," she reasoned once she was closer, eyes softer than they'd originally had been. "Let's go."

"Whoa!" Before Robin could respond other then making that noise, he was moving, and not on his own accord. He looked down to see a black disk of energy beneath him, flying him alongside Raven and through the running, retreating crowd.

"This is just…" he finally began.

"Creepy?" Raven finished for him a little too quickly, taking his sentence the wrong way as she stole a glance in his direction.

"No," he said, "too cool."

Raven nodded and looked forward again, starting to speed up her flying. When they made it to the road, there was still smoke clearing from whatever had crashed into it. What they both saw next made them gasp.

Behind the clouds of smoke was a tall girl, but she wasn't looking at the two birds. She was staring angrily at a small green boy that was hiding behind a strong looking, bulky man in a sweatshirt who looked annoyed. The girl's eyes literally were gleaming green and she looked infuriated.

"Something tells me that this isn't going to be as easy as fighting Kitten and Fang," Raven told Robin as she put down her disk and he dropped to the ground on his feet lightly.

"Something tells me your right," Robin said to her as they both stared at these three misfits in the middle of the street.

Just then, as if hearing their voices, the girl turned in their direction and saw them, eyes still green. The other two also looked over when she did, and nobody moved, the five teens not knowing what to do. No one dared to say anything for fear if the silence was broken, a fight would break out. Robin didn't really like the odds if these other three happened to be acquaintances, and wanted to keep things as peaceful as possible.

For now.

But what these five didn't know at that exact moment, was that this encounter was going to be the beginning of a strong friendship. A strong team.

And this is how it all began.
