Chapter 4
"what?" Gai said with a questioning look. "I didn't hear you."
"I said, why did you promise to die with lee if he didn't make it through his surgery?" I said determined to get an answer.
There was a moment of silence, and Gai seemed to be thinking.
"That wasn't exactly what you said before." Gai said obliviously trying to tease me.
"Then why did you make me say it again if you heard it the first time!" I yelled at him.
"where is your bathroom?" Gai said looking around.
"Don't try to avoid my question!" I yelled.
Gai looked straight into my eye as his eyes swelled with tears. He was engulfed with a mixture of sadness and anger.
"Why do you care!" Gai yelled "Since when have you ever cared! All you do is ignore me and push me away!
I looked away ashamed. I knew what he said was true. I have been ignoring him and trying to push him away since we were kids. Why do I care? Why does it bother me so much? I never asked myself these questions. Maybe after all these years, I see Gai as more than just a rival.
"Gai, I don't want to lose anymore of my precious people." I said.
The anger washed off Gai's face and was replaced with harder crying.
"I don't think I could handle grieving for another friend." I confessed.
Gai then grabbed my vest and pulled me down into a massive hug.
"I so sorry Kakashi! I never wanted you to worry about me!" Gai said into my shoulder. "what I said is what I promised to do, and I never go back on a promise."
I pushed away stunned, he can't do this to me.
"No Gai you don-" I started
"Yes I do! To help lee reach his goal is my only goal in life and if lee died I would never be able to live with myself. I would blame myself for not stopping the fight sooner..." Gai said.
"What about the rest of your team? What about me? We could can help you through it." I told him.
"I don't want to be a burden." Gai said as he wiped tears from his face.
I grabbed Gai's face and brought it close to mine.
"You will never be a burden to me." I said looking straight into his eyes.
Gai suddenly stopped crying, his eyes widened with surprise. I then pulled him into another hug. I think he has finally come to his senses.
"Would you like to sleep over tonight?" I asked.
"Ya, that would be nice." He said already starting to fall asleep in my arms.
"I got up and led him into to my small bedroom. I helped him into my bed and climbed into the other side. Its was going to be a tight fit.
"goodnight Gai." I said as I turned off the light on my bedside table.
"Thank you, Kakashi" Gai said through the darkness.
"ya, no problem." I said as I drifted into sleep.
