Chapter 25: Winner Take All

"Fire beats wood."

"Water beats fire!"

"Sun dries water!"

"Thunderstorm blocks out sun."

The Titans looked around at one another in the middle of their card game, exchanging glances and intense glares, taking it very seriously. Raven was the first to throw up her hands and sigh.

"I'm out."

"Me too," Beast Boy huffed.

"Me three," Terra murmured, disappointed.

Starfire looked around sneakily as she grinned. "I wish to go the fish?"

Raven raised an eyebrow and peered over at her friend's cards, exhaling and shaking her head at what she saw. … wait, go fish?

"You want to fold, Star," Beast Boy spoke up, also peering at his friends cards with a disdained look. Her happy smile didn't falter.

"Fold? Then I am victorious?"

Raven and Beast Boy shook their heads, Starfire's eyes widening in realization as she laid her cards down sheepishly. The three then glanced over to Robin and Cyborg, Robin grinning to himself.

"Sorry, guess I'm just invincible, guys," he said, placing his hands over the large pile of cards on the middle of the table. Just as he began pulling them towards him, Cyborg's large robotic hand stopped him.

"Uh uh, how can you be invincible when I still got one card?" the half robot challenged with a confident grin, "You know you wanna play me for it."

"Fine, last round, winner take all, and you're going down," Robin said with an emphasized grunt, sitting down and staring at the rest of his cards once more. Before long he threw one into the pile.

"Tornado! Beat that."

The others all ogled in wonder at the card, eyes quickly shifting towards Cyborg. His air of confidence didn't decrease.

"Hmmm… okay. BOOYAH!" with a smack of a card on the table, he pulled his hand away to reveal a large flaming meteorite. Beast Boy's eyes widened.

"The one in a million wildcard that beats all others. It's too beautiful for words," the changeling cried in a romanticized voice.

Robin glared, fuming on his side of the table as Cyborg gloated before him, his competitive side coming out. Raven looked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder, trying to ease him.

"It's only a game, Robin… and you played well," she said with a small smile, "Winning isn't everything."

"Yeah, you're right," he said with a sigh, muttering, "It's the only thing that matters. I want a rematch!"

Just as he said this, him and Raven disappeared from the table with a flash of light, the other teens staring at their empty places in surprise. Before anyone could ask anything though, they too were transported and soon missing from their seats, the Tower empty.

Robin and Raven looked around the large dome like room, confused when they weren't in the Tower anymore. Soon enough they weren't alone, and saw their fellow Titans standing with them.

"Where is this place…?" Starfire whispered.

Just then, another flash of light was seen beside them and the familiar faces from the Hive were standing with them, with three others in tow. Robin's masked eyes turned to slits.

"Titans!"

Jinx looked behind her to see them and she glared back.

"Hive!"

Before either could command their team to attack, a voice from above them boomed, everyone turned to look.

"Welcome, champions all," spoke the monkey-man that stood on a pedestal high above them, a black leotard on over his white and gray fur and skin. He wore a red gemmed necklace and had thick gauntlets over his ankles and wrists. Nobody spoke. "I am the Master of Games, and you are hereby invited to compete in the Tournament of Heroes versus Villains!"

"Say what?" Cyborg called out, eyebrow raised.

"A friendly competition between the world's greatest young heroes and villains alike," he said, with that a large television screen from behind him came to life of the Titans, and started to play as he continued to speak. "Robin, the combat equipped, Kung Fu trained, one man army. Cyborg, the high-tech teen, butt-kicking machine. Starfire, the strong, starbolt wielding alien princess. Terra, the rock and rolling girl, with mastery over earth. Beast Boy, a quick-witted changeling who can turn into any animal, and Raven, the dark, half demon mistress of magic," the Master of Games paused again as the screen fizzed out and changed to the Hive, "Gizmo, the nasty little boy with a really big brain. Mammoth, the genetically engineered fighting machine. Jinx, the dark sorceress whose hexes mean bad luck. See-more, the super powered one-eyed man. Billy Numerous, the body-splitting man that can be anywhere all at once, and Kyd Wykkyd, the stealthy, dark and teleporting member of the group. 12 brave and worthy competitors, but only one shall win and claim victory for their team."

Beast Boy's eyes lit up at the prospect of a prize at the end of this competition. "So does the winner get, say, I don't' know, a moped?" The changeling grinned dreamily at the thought of picking up numerous women with his new ride.

"I have no moped shape shifter, but rest assured, when the tournament is complete, there will be magnificent prizes. And of course the winner shall prove they are the greatest young hero or villain on Earth, and the tournament will be won to whichever side they represent," the Master continued to explain, "However, anyone who wishes not to compete need only say the word, and I shall return you home at once."

The titans looked amongst each other and murmured in hush voices.

"I do not like the idea of this 'game'."

"Neither do I, Starfire… it doesn't sit well. I sense something off."

"Aw c'mon, y'all got nothing to worry about, we can take these guys easy. Whatcha say, Robin?"

Robin nodded his head to the half robot before glancing to the girls, the three exchanging glances before exhaling and giving into the idea. Robin grinned and looked up at the Master of Games.

"Looks like we're all in."

"So are we," Jinx snapped.

"The challenge is accepted, the tournament shall begin! Prepare for competition," and with that the Master was gone from the podium he'd been on. The two groups finally fully acknowledged each other, eyeing each other down wearily.

"This shouldn't be too hard… after all, we did take you all down once before, and that was only with three of us," Jinx said with a smirk, looking directly at Robin.

"Things are different, you won't be so lucky this time," he countered. Raven's eyes narrowed to her pale counterpart. Gizmo looked straight to Cyborg and stuck his tongue out, snickering.

"What's the matter robo-wimp, afraid I'll kick your stickin' can!?" Gizmo called out with a laugh, Cyborg glaring him down.

"Oh I know he didn't just say that to me!"

"Looks like they've gotten an addition to their team, too," See-more said, pointing to Terra. She crossed her thin arms over her chest.

"Dang right we have! And she's gonna rock your world!" Beast Boy called back defensively. Terra looked over to him and smiled softly, the green boy blushing slightly.

"Champions!" boomed the familiar voice of the Master, "Round one. Face your opponent!"

With that each teen was teleported into their own arena to face off.

Beast Boy opened his eyes a split second later to see a large, sandy beach before spread out before him.

"Beast Boy!"

He glanced back to his side and smiled in relief upon seeing his blonde teammate rushing to him.

"Terra, you're here!"

She nodded as she stopped beside him, confusion in her eyes as she looked around. "Where are we? What's going on?"

"My guess is as good as yours, I think we're in some kind of arena."

"It would appear so," a new voice purred. The two Titans perked up and looked ahead of them to see none other than Jinx approaching with Mammoth in tow. The hulking man stopped beside the sorceress when she did, fist colliding repeatedly into his opened hand, a sadistic grin across his face, eyeing Terra and him like prey.

"I'm gonna enjoy this."

Starfire's eyes darted from left to right, slightly anxious as she hovered in front of Cyborg.

"Have you been able to use your technology in order to affirm our new location?" she inquired. He sighed and shook his head.

"No," he huffed out, glancing behind her suddenly, "And we don't have time to figure it out, we've got company finally."

The Tamaranean looked over her shoulder to follow Cyborg's gaze to see Gizmo and Kyd Wykkyd. Her eyes and hands shown green in anticipation. The small boy genius snorted.

"Time to show you who the real winners are here, ya snot-munchers!"

"Yeehaw, little lady! Hope you're ready to lose!"

Without a word Raven's eyes began to glow and she started throwing dark energy at the multiplier, Billy Numerous merely duplicating continuously and charging at her as she took out clones with her powers. She didn't understand why the boys would so willingly accept a 'challenge' such as this. She was even more confused at where she was, the looming trees in the forest creating a dark canopy, hiding them from the outside world.

"Raven!"

Raven looked up to see Robin leap out of the way of a laser beam that came from behind him, surprised to see him coming her way. In tow not too far behind was See-more. The Boy Wonder looked slightly out of breath and Raven pointed her hand towards him swiftly.

"Robin, stop!"

The young hero blinked in confusion but came to a halt, eyes looking at the empath hesitantly. Without hesitation on her part, Raven made a disk appear beneath him, safely levitating him on it out of harms way and towards her instead. Robin grinned.

"Thanks, Rae."

"You'd think you could handle yourself for ten seconds without needing me," she responded as Robin jumped down from the disk and beside her. Before she could turn around and see why he'd done so in such an abrupt manner, he felt her grab her elbow and tugged her down, the two ducking and rolling back as an explosion went off right near them. Raven peeked up to see a pile of Billy Numerous lying on the ground. He glanced back to Robin to see him putting explosive disks back into his utility belt with a smirk.

"You're welcome."

Raven shot him a look before glancing back behind them to see See-more sending a blast their way once more. The dark bird threw a shield up around her and Robin as they stood back up, the beam from the villain's eye simply running across the black barrier. As Raven let the shield fall, she levitated some nearby fallen logs back at See-more.

"Two can play your game!" the Hive Five member called as he changed the dial on his one, large eyeball to shield himself from the offending trees. "Get them, Billy!"

Robin looked to Raven confidently, "Let's take them," he said, extending a hand out to her, "together."

Raven looked from his hand back up to his face and nodded slightly, allowing but a small smile in return. She grabbed his hand swiftly and flew up with him, ready to take down anyone who stood in their way.

After holding nothing back, the two Titans found themselves standing before the defeated Hive members. Robin looked over to Raven and smirked, outstretching his hand above them to her.

"Nice job."

Raven raised an eyebrow and unenthusiastically met his high five with her own palm softly. Just as she did though, the two were engulfed in light, and opened their eyes a moment later to see they were once again in the large room before the Master of Games. Raven looked down to see they were still holding hands and blushed beneath her hood, lightly withdrawing it as the Boy Wonder looked behind them.

"Cy, alright, you won."

"But Starfire didn't," their metal companion said with disdain, walking towards the two birds. Robin's brows furrowed.

"Seems Beast Boy and Terra didn't either."

Raven and Cyborg looked to where the Boy Wonder was gazing to see Jinx, Mammoth, and Kyd Wykkyd standing near them, arms crossed over their chest.

"Well played young champions," the Master spoke up over the tense teen, making everyone look up to him on his high podium. "You survived round one."

Robin didn't like this statement, calling back up to him, "Survived? What do you mean survived? What happened to the losers?"

"Yeah, where are our friends?" Cyborg piped up, coming to his friend's side. There were complaints from the rest of the Hive, with the exception Kyd Wykkyd.

"Peace, everyone. Survive is merely an expression. Beast Boy and the other losers have been returned home safely," he assured everyone. The two Titans shared a glance, Robin nodding, pleased with this answer. The Master continued, "Think not of the vanquished, my champions. You must rest, for tomorrow you must face round 2!"

Without another word, the rest of the Titans and Hive members were zapped out of the room, leaving the Master alone. He grinned to himself and grasped his red-gemmed necklace firmly, power swelling up inside of him as it glowed white.

"Yes, what a marvelous game indeed. No matter who is victorious, I win all the prizes…"

"Raven?"

The light whisper and knocking from the other side of her door caused the light-sleeping empath to stir, rolling over on her side and reaching for her cloak. As she stood up clasped it around her neck, she approached hesitantly, leaving her hood down. Before she could open the door there was another persistent knock. "Rae, it's me."

Raven blinked, knowing who that voice belonged to. She opened the door to have her assumption confirmed. "Cyborg? What are you –"

"Can we talk inside? It's important," he whispered, eyes glancing warily around the hall, as if being watched. Raven too felt it better to continue any conversation he wished to have behind closed doors and stepped aside, allowing her friend to walk in and sit on a chair in the room. She shut the door quietly and leaned back against it, arms crossing over her chest.

"It's late, what are you doing out of your room?" she asked him calmly, seeing the slight worry on his face.

"Can't sleep, I'm worried about the others. Star, Terra, BB… I tried calling home to see if they were all okay, but I couldn't get a signal through. Something's off," he assured. Raven's eyebrow rose inquisitively.

"We're in an alternate dimension after all, but… I do see what you're saying. And I've had an uneasy feeling about this 'Master' of Games since we were pulled here," Raven confessed. Cyborg smiled.

"I knew you'd believe me, nothing gets passed you, girl," Cyborg told her as he stood up and walked towards her and the door, a small smile on her face as she stood straight. "Now lets go get Robin and do some stealthy investigating of the joint."

Just as Raven opened the door and her and Cyborg were about to walk out though, they came face-to-face with none other than the Boy Wonder himself. His masked eyes widened.

"Cyborg, hey – you're, ah, what are you doing here?" the hero managed out, but just barely. Staring at the two in the doorway had taken him off guard. In fact… wait a minute. "What are you doing here?"

Cyborg lowered his voice considerably as he spoke up, "I was asking Raven if she'd felt some bad vibes about this place just like I was, we were on our way to your room but looks like yah beat us out" There was a pause as the half robot raised his right eyebrow, questions in his eye. "Actually, what are you doing here, short stuff?"

Robin held back a threatening blush and instead muttered out angrily, "I'd gone to your room to talk battle strategy and noticed you weren't there, so I came to ask Raven if she'd seen you. Looks like you both are just fine though, so – "

"Perfect man, lets go do some digging then on this place," Cyborg interrupted, buying the story as he walked past his leader, leaving the two birds to stare at each other for a moment, Robin finally smirking at her as if in a secret way, hoping she'd understand. Raven cleared her throat softly after a few more seconds and swiftly drew her hood up over her head, concealing any blush that could have managed to escape in their silent exchange. She was grateful Cyborg didn't know anything concerning her feelings towards Robin, else he probably would have thought differently.

"So, you really think something's up?" Robin whispered to Raven as they trailed behind Cyborg in the long hallway. Raven shrugged.

"I have a bad feeling… and honestly, I don't think our friends are back home. Or the Hive," she responded, Cyborg stopping to look back and listen to the conversation. "I still sense their presences. They've never left."

Robin's eyes narrowed. "You're sure about this?" Raven nodded.

"Time to have a word with our sponsor I'd say," Cyborg growled, ready for a fight.

"We can't risk that," Robin quickly intercepted.

"He's right, if we attack now and he does have everyone trapped here somewhere, we'll have no way to save them. Our best bet is to win the tournament together tomorrow and figure this out then," Raven planned, looking between the two boys. Cyborg sighed, deflated.

"She's right. We should hit the sack and rest up. Night y'all," Cyborg said with a flex of his bicep before stalking off. Robin looked at Raven and smirked.

"Looks like I'm rubbing off on you. Keep planning like that and you'll replace me soon."

"No one could replace you, Robin," Raven assured, before her tone grew sarcastic, "Besides, you could never get me into that traffic light of a costume."

Robin's smirk didn't leave his lips even after he shook his head and walked back down the hallway to his bedroom, leaving Raven standing alone waiting for him to disappear. Her eyes darted in the direction they'd just been going in.

She would get to the bottom of this.

Raven looked around the large room they'd all previously been congregated in that day, looking for a clue as to where her friends and foes could be hidden. Before she could search much though, she heard someone approaching and hid in the shadows, up and out of sight. The first thing she saw were four, large mechanical spider legs glinting in the darkness.

'Gizmo?' she thought to herself. When her eyes adjusted and she saw who was attached to the legs on his back, she inhaled sharply, holding her breath.

"Magnificent, absolutely magnificent prizes. The Titans and Hive members now in my possession… their powers are mine to command!" Raven watched on as his eyes shown green like Starfire's and his arms turned to gorilla's using Beast Boy's abilities. "I simply can't wait to see what I'll win in round two."

'I can't let their be a round two. I have to tell Robin and Cyborg,' Raven told herself as she levitated silently along the shadowed wall. Just as she was about to sneak out the door, a metal leg clamped down on her cloak and struck her down to the floor on her back, knocking the breath out of her. Suddenly, she was face-to-face with the Master of Games. She found her courage and glared up at him.

"Game over. Now."

"The game is never over, young champion. But I'm afraid you are disqualified!" he called out, the ground shaking familiarly as he used Terra's powers and laughed. Without wasting any more time, Raven's eyes glowed and she threw her matching glowing hands up towards the beast's chest, a beam hitting his body. He didn't move though, instead the necklace seemingly absorbing her mystic powers. Raven gasped as she felt her power drain and shut her eyes tight, unconsciousness taking over.

"Never challenge the master. I always win…"

"May the best champions win today," Jinx said snidely, eyeing Robin and Cyborg as she stood between Mammoth and Kyd Wykkyd. Robin shot a glare at the three of them.

"Yeah, you too," he remarked as he gazed back up to Cyborg. "You see Raven yet this morning?"

Cyborg shook his head, "I figured she was sleeping in but that's so unlike her."

"Raven won't be joining us. She has been… disqualified. In an attempt to foil the tournament for her fellow competitors," the Master's voice was heard, everyone turning to look up at the podium.

Robin looked at him in confusion, muttering to himself, "That doesn't sound like Raven, not at all. Something happened to her."

"And now with the odd number of competitors left, I must ask one of the Hive members to step down to let his or her fellow teammates compete instead," the Master continued seamlessly, hands on his hips indigently.

'I've got to win. To save her and the others,' Robin promised.

"Mammoth will sit this out. Wykkyd and I can take these two just fine," Jinx told the Master, him nodding as Mammoth was zapped out of the room.

"It is decided, let the second round begin!" the Master called, and once again everyone was gone in a flash.

Robin stood before Kyd Wykkyd, teeth gritted together, the complete opposite of the boy in front of him with the cool demeanor. Without waiting for his opponent to attack first, Robin flipped out his bo-staff and yelled out, charging to the dark figure that reminded him all too much of his former teacher. He lunged at Kyd Wykkyd, each strike missing one after another as the dark boy evaded, flying backwards, side-to-side and every which way. When a hit finally struck, he was blown back hard to the floor, but simply disappeared through a portal similar to Raven's. Robin swiftly looked around, staff spinning, prepared. Unbeknownst to him though, Kyd Wykkyd teleported right above him and dropped down, kicking back the young hero.

Robin stumbled and fell but quickly gathered his balance, catching himself as he skidded across the floor and used his momentum to flip back up into a standing position. He glared daggers at his opponent before running at him once more with a yell.

"There's no way I'm losing."

After a back and forth fight, Robin found himself back in the round room alone, nerves taking over him in the pit of his stomach. Who had won? Cyborg or Jinx? All he wanted now was for this 'tournament' to be over so he could find Raven and the others. He knew now she was right.

A flash appeared beside him and Cyborg was next to him a second later, panting, hand on his knee. Robin grinned and ran over to him.

"Cy, you did it!"

"Just barely," the half robot said with a chuckle, looking to his leader, "That girl's got game, I'll give her that."

The two boys high fived and looked up to the Master. "That's that then, we win. Now about that reward – "

"Oh no, my young heroes. You're mistaken. Now that there are two of you left, you must fight till there is only one victor," the Master interrupted, his face serious. Robin and Cyborg's mouths opened in shock slightly. It couldn't be. "On to the final round!"

With a flash once more the two boys were teleported from the room, and in a moment Robin and Cyborg stood feet apart in front of each other, standing upon a large floating rock in the middle of space it seemed.

"Man, this ain't fair!" Cyborg shouted to the sky, shooting a nasty look at it as if he could be heard, "Big guy don't want us fighting him to explain what the hell happened to everyone."

Robin shook his head. "Doesn't matter now, looks like only one of us is going to get the honor of doing that. We have to do this - someone's going to finish this." Cyborg looked back to the Boy Wonder.

"May the best man win then," Cyborg said, fist connecting with his open hand before it changed into his sonic canon.

"I intend to," Robin muttered darkly yet confidently.

Robin reappeared before the Master of Games, fists clenched and head held high, but he knew he had to hold back and play things off.

"Well done, champion of champions! You have proved yourself and for your team that young heroes are above all, indeed. Today is yours."

"I'm supposed to get some prizes now, I suppose?" Robin questioned, raising an eyebrow.

The Master smirked and walked down the steps to his podium to meet Robin at the bottom where he stood. "I did say there would be prizes, young champion. I did not say they were for you," he sneered. Robin felt the vein near his temple throb.

"What do you mean by that? What's going on here exactly?"

"You may be the winner," the Master spoke up, gripping the red gem necklace he kept around his neck securely and holding it up to Robin's face, "But the losers are mine to keep."

In the silnce that followed this statement, Robin heard familiar voices coming from inside the necklace, his already clenched fists tightening. So that's why Raven could sense everyone, it all made sense. Before Robin could even speak his mind, the Master began again as his body shown aspects from each hero and villain he'd imprisoned.

"And with all this power, I am invincible!"

Robin's scowl turned to a smirk as his wits took over. "How can you be invincible if you don't have me, the champion of champions?"

The Master's face looked thoughtful and he lowered himself down with Gizmo's metal spider legs, scratching his chin. "You are quite agile and skilled…"

"Then maybe the game isn't over."

"The game is never over, young champion."

Robin's smirk widened. He had him right where he wanted him. "One last round, winner takes all?" The Master threw his fists up.

"Robin versus the Master of Games, let the contest begin!"

Without another warning, the Master shot green eye-beams towards Robin, who leapt out of the way with a skilled backflip and summersault before running in the opposite direction. He continued to evade attack after attack, hex after hex, sonic canon blast after sonic canon blast. The barrage was relentless, but as soon as he found an opening, the Boy Wonder shot his bird-a-rang out at the Master's mechanical spider legs mid-run and swung around him, his foot connecting with the gem on the necklace. The impact caused it to glow, and Cyborg and Jinx were released just as Robin got blasted back with a shot from Raven's black magic from the Master.

"I won't lose, victory shall be mine!" he roared angrily, eyes still glowing, now between Starfire's green and Raven's white. Robin stood back up between Cyborg and Jinx, the other two looking to him.

"We have to work together – take him down," Robin muttered, smirking despite his glare to the villain. Jinx and Cyborg nodded despite their differences and aimed their arms forward toward the Master, his blue canon blast charged as her hand glowed a bright pink. Robin spoke up again finally, "Winning isn't everything. Sometimes, people mean more."

The Master growled out and ran towards the three teens, just as Cyborg began blasting at him. The Master bobbed and weaved, skidding sideways as he was struck occasionally and grazed by the blasts. Jinx watched and waited patiently for her opportunity and threw a pink hex at him, slicing the necklace off in one more and cracking the gem as it flew through the air.

"No!" the Master yelled with a gasp. Robin quickly moved much faster then anyone else and leapt up, striking the gem with his boot as he kicked it to the ground beneath him, cracking it further. Just as he did this, light emitted from it, and once it cleared, the Master was kneeling on the ground, the Titans and Hive members standing before him in a mass.

"I lose," he stated, and with that disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

"Alright dudes, nice going! Took ya long enough!" Beast Boy joked, eyeteeth gleaming as he elbowed Robin's arm. He smirked and looked around at the eleven other teens before him, seeing the Hive slightly wavering on what they should do now.

"We needed some help," Robin said, looking right at Jinx. The sorceress raised an eyebrow, surprise crossing her face before she smirked.

"I guess we can leave the fighting to another day, I'm beat," she told her team, walking towards Kyd Wykkyd. "Take us home."

Kyd Wykkyd silently spread his arms out from beneath his cape and the Hive disappeared through a portal without another word. Terra looked on as they retreated, stunned.

"Is it always that easy with the bad guys?"

Cyborg laughed, "Oh if only."

"Oh, friends, I am so relieved to be free of that prison and here once more! Let us please return home now, yes?" Starfire chirped, clapping her hands excitedly as she landed on the floor beside everyone else. "We shall celebrate Robin's victory against the Master of Games!"

"Yeah dude, crazy drive to win saved us all," Beast Boy added. Robin looked over at the changeling again with a shake of his head.

"Actually, when I faced the Master, I wasn't fighting to win," Robin told them, looking around the circle. His eyes finally landed upon Raven who had been quiet the whole time, hiding behind her usual hood and unreadable eyes. He grinned. "I was fighting for my friends."

"And on that note, let's get outta here," Cyborg said eagerly, tossing the broken necklace to Robin. The Boy Wonder raised it high above his head into the air and let it teleport them back to Jump City where their city was waiting.

End Chapter

Wow, surprise surprise, I excluded pretty much every fight scene in this episode because well… I can't write fight scenes very well. Nor do I enjoy writing them if I can avoid it at all costs. Plus, this was getting really lengthy. Going through that wouldn't have been fun. I hope you enjoyed – please leave a review on what you thought about my revamp and if you like the next chapter to come.
