I turned around in the arms that were wrapped around me. I looked up at Paul's deep, dark eyes. With a small smile, I pushed myself up on the tips of my toes and pressed my lips to his. He held onto me tightly, kissing me back gently. This kiss made me feel like I was in one of those cheesy romantic comedy movies. I felt like we were the only people in the world; like everything around us was put on pause. It may sound stereotypical, but I felt like one of those girls who felt like he may be 'the one' just because of a good kiss.
I pulled away, half-smiling at him. He was wearing a long button down shirt with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He also wore tight fitting blue jeans.
"You look beautiful, Bella." He commented, leaning down to kiss me again.
When he pulled away, I smirked. "Thanks, you don't look too bad yourself."
"Oh these old rags? They were at the bottom of my laundry pile." He teased.
"Is that why there is still a price tag on your shirt?" I laughed, holding the little tag between my fingers. "Old, huh?"
His face broke into a cocky smile. "What about you?" He quickly changed the subject. "Where did you get that dress?"
I broke eye-contact. Should I tell him about Leah's desire to help our relationship? This is just too crazy. Paul stared at me and I could tell he was getting curious. Oh god, maybe I should say something! I sure am a dumbass.
"Well, it's sort of a funny story." I tried to shrug it off, but he remained persistent.
He raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? I love laughing."
I shrugged out of his grasp, holding my left arm with my right hand. "Okay, so I don't really date that much...which means that I don't own anything nice." I looked at him and he nodded for me to continue. "I needed help, so I kinda, sort of, got desperate...and called...Leah."
For the first time ever, I saw Paul stare at me in fear. "You did what?" He queried, going rigid.
"I had nothing, and I didn't know what to do." I tried to defend myself.
He slapped his hand to his forehead, accentuating his already too-wide eyes. "Did you tell her who you were going to be with?" Sheepishly, I smiled. "God, Bella!" He groaned. "You know what you just did? She's going to tell everyone and I'm going to be in such deep sh-"
"No!" I cut him off. "She's going to help us. She said she thinks that whatever we've got going is good for the both of us.
He shook his head, staring at me incredulously. "Leah. Cold-hearted bitch Leah. You think she's really going to help us?"
"Hey!" I frowned. "She's not cold-hearted. She's just been hurt before. She's like me, but luckily she didn't turn into a zombie. She just stayed mad at the world, but I can tell she's trying to be happier. I mean, look what we're trying to do. We're trying to show others that we're not the same people we were before. Leah wants to do that, too."
Paul looked up at the sky, drawing in a deep breath. He darted his eyes back to me and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me in. "You're right." He finally agreed. "I guess she can change, too." He kissed my forehead tenderly. "Can we please start this date?"
I nodded, my heart fluttering. He took my hand and led me to the table, pulling out my chair for me. I sat down.
"Would you like a drink?" He asked.
"What do you have?" I inquired.
"I have some beers and coke." He provided, going to the little cooler he had brought along.
"Coke's fine. I don't want a repeat of last night."
Paul laughed and pulled out a can of coke. He brought it over to the table then sat down. "So what did happen last night? Why did all of you come in and put me to bed?"
Paul stared at me, am amused little smile playing on his lips. "Well, after you passed out on me, I had Jared pull you off of me. It was just Jared and I for that moment, but then Quil came in and whined about not wanting to be alone...the needy little ass." I chuckled at the nickname. "So I carried you up to your room. Jared and Quil kept guard. They were making sure that your dad didn't know what was going on, but I guess the little fuckheads were too busy talking about something. Quil and his dumb little mind thought it was a good idea to joke about changing you into your pyjamas. That was when your dad ran in with a gun. Quil jumped out of the window and ran into the woods." Paul shook his head. "Then Jared put his hands in the air. Your dad's one scary man, Bella. Anyway, after ten minutes of explaining, he let us go. Jared and I left to find Quil on the side of the road, holding his leg."
I tried my best to keep the food I was eating in my mouth because I was laughing too hard. After I swallowed, I asked, "Can't you guys do anything without one of you injuring yourselves?"
Paul took a few moments and beamed at me. "Nope." He proceeded to shove a chicken leg in his mouth.
I took another bite of the food. There was absolutely no way that he could have cooked this on his own. I mean, I don't think the pack knows how to cook. It had to be Emily, Kim, or me cooking for them.
"So who cooked this for you?" I questioned.
Paul frowned at me. "Are you saying that I needed help?"
"Um, yeah. I've never seen you cook. I mean, you're always in the kitchen. Usually stuffing your face."
He snorted. "Well, you have me there, but you're right, I had help. Mrs. Blackrock helped me out."
"Who's that?" I asked. I don't think I've ever heard her name before.
"She's an older woman that hired me to keep her house in shape. Mr. Blackrock passed away about a year ago. I told her that I had this girl I wanted to impress and she told me that she would do the cooking because apparently I can't boil water without burning it."
"And the rest of this?" I queried, gesturing to the lights, the table, and the gorgeous flowers.
"The rest I did on my own. It took a while. You and I saw a set up like this in a movie once. I never thought creating this would take so long." He said. I nodded in appreciation.
After we finished eating, he wanted to show me something. We went climbed to the second story of the barn. There was a white sheet laid on the ground. The ceiling had a window, presenting the clear sky. The stars and moon were present tonight, which was lucky for Washington. We laid down on the white sheet which was cushioned with hay. Being with Paul made me feel alive in so many ways. I never felt like this with Jake or Edward. I felt like I could really be who I am without having to pretend that I was okay all the time, like I would have with Jake or Edward.
But I knew there's an elephant in the room; what we are, what we know, what all this is. I turned my head and noticed Paul staring at me.
"Paul?"
"You want to know what's going on with us, huh?"
I nodded.
"I'm trying to figure that out myself." He sighed.
I pushed myself up on one elbow, my hair falling over my face. "Well maybe we should talk about how this would work."
Paul pushed himself up on one elbow. He was practically towering over me. "Well one thing's for sure, the pack will not like this."
And me being the stupid little girl that I am, happens to possess an unfiltered mouth. "What if you imprint?" I blurted.
He tensed. "You don't have to worry about it."
"Paul, this is singularly the only thing that's worrying me right now." Even though that was a lie, it was still concerning me in that moment. I knew for a fact that he already imprinted, going by the expression in his eyes. This made my heart drop. "Paul, you..."
"Yeah." He whispered, not looking at me.
"It's not me, is it?" I asked.
He shook his head. "Rachel Black."
I felt like all the air in my lungs was squeezed out. "Does Jacob know?"
Paul forced an inhumorous laugh."Do you think I would alive if he found out?" He does have a point there. "The only people who know is Sam, Jared and the Elders."
I laid back down, bring my knees up to my chest. "So you love her?"
Paul looked back at me, an unreadable expression in his black eyes. "I do, but not in the way you think. When I imprinted on her, she was already married with a child. She knew about it, but we are just friends."
"But I thought..."
"What, because I imprinted on her that we're going to fall madly in love with each other? Not every imprint turns into a love story, Bella. Look at Quil and Claire. Their imprint is like a big brother and little sister bond. The bond I have with Rachel is more like a close friendship. We talk to each other weekly about life. We just make sure that both of us are okay."
I nodded in understanding. "So you're free to be with whomever you want?" Paul smiled at me, standing up. He held out his hand and I took it, pulling me up.
"Yes. She's happily married with three kids right now. And now, the only girl I have eyes for is a cute, clumsy, big doe-eyed girl with a hard head." Without warning, he smashed his lips on mine. There was so much more I wanted to ask about Rachel, but I was too lost in this kiss to care. Maybe whatever it is we got going on won't end badly.
There's one thing I am almost positive about; this is going to be one hell of a ride.
