Chapter 28
Guess Who's Back
"I guess I am." I say and kiss him.
.xx.
It is almost dinner time and I've spent the most part of my birthday hidden with Tobias. I mean, my boyfriend. We did nothing during all this time except enjoying eachothers company. We cared about nothing the whole day and stayed in his room with the blinds closed watching movies in his computers and kissing occasionally. It's when the door opens that we are brought back into the real world.
Tobias and I are sat in his bed, under the warm pile of blankets, when Zeke arrives.
"Hey dude, I'm back." Zeke announces closing the door behind him.
I'm about to get up when Tobias grabs my hand, not letting me.
"Welcome back. Tris's here." He says.
"Hey Tris. Well, what have you two been doing here?" Zeke asks.
"Just watching movies." I reply.
"Yes, yes, sure." Zeke says as soon as he actually sees me. "I'm just going to leave my stuff in here and... Leave. Bye!"
"Bye." We both say.
Zeke leaves the room and I immediately say, "That was awkward."
Tobias shrugs and kisses my cheek.
.xx.
By the time the movie we were seeing ended, we were already late for dinner. When we finally arrived to the cafeteria, the most part of our friend had already finished eating.
As soon as I sit Christina grabs my face and turns it to her.
"I hope the cake is intact." She says.
I laugh, "It is."
But then I remember that the frosting has a huge line without chocolate, because Tobias remembered to smudge it all across my face.
The dinner today is meat loaf with white rice, which reminded me of home. Once, when I was 8, I was wandering around the school garden when a big kid was running after another. One of them pushed me, so that he could run without having me on his way, and I fell on the floor hitting my knee really hard on a tree root. When I came home, mom was making dinner and she saw me limping up the stairs. After asking me what had happened, she treated the wound and let me stay in bed the rest of the day. At dinner time, she came into my room with a tray. In it there was a dish of meat loaf with white rice, a slice of bread and apple juice.
Involuntarily, I smile at the meat loaf.
I'm halfway through my apple when the noises and shouts of the cafeteria suddenly become whispers.
"Lauren's back?" Shauna asks.
"Guess so..." Zeke answers.
Apparently, after that fight between Tobias and Eric, Lauren never set foot at the school again. Until today.
Among the whispers, some are louder than others, specially the ones coming from the Dauntless tables...
I thought she switched schools.
She's really pregnant?
How is she showing her face?
What about Eric?
Is she having the baby?
While the most part of the cafeteria stopped to look at Lauren, Tobias is acting like he doesn't know who she is. With one hand he is holding his fork and with the other he's playing some random game in his phone.
Lauren walks in dressed with black leggings, a loose grey shirt, sneakers and sunglasses. She picks up her tray with food, takes a look around the cafeteria, probably trying to avoid the persistent looks from everyone and takes a sit next to Cara, who seems to consider for a moment if she should let her sit with her or not.
Zeke touches Tobias arm.
"How're y-" He says, but then he glances at me and changes is whole sentence. "How're we going to celebrate Trises birthday?"
"I believe we were going to the roof and eat cake." Christina says.
"Cake?" Zeke asks.
"Oh yea, you weren't here." Shauna says. "Trises birthday cake was a extra large Dauntless Chocolate."
"Are you serious?" Uriah asks astonished.
"No way!" Zeke shouts. "I've been here for the past 3 years and I've never had Dauntless Chocolate as birthday cake!"
"I don't even want to know how you guys pulled it off." I say.
"I'm glad you don't, because to be true, I don't know either." Tobias says.
.xx.
It's 11:05pm when Christina and I head out to the roof. As we all previously agreed, we were going to get together and eat my Dauntless Cake.
Since we are still on a school night, the most part of the lights turn off at 10:30pm, which means Christina and I are walking in complete darkness. We walk side by side and I brush the back of my hand in the wall for support.
"I need to get a flashlight." Christina mumbles.
I nod even though she can't see me.
As we turn in the last hallway we can finally see the path getting lighter because of the moonlight shining through the windows near the stairs. We run up the stairs, mostly because Christina wants to make sure no one has eaten my cake. When we get to the door, we open it but for our surprise the roof is empty.
"Where is everyone?" She asks.
I shrug. But then I see a white paper duct taped to the door.
My room -Z
"Zeke's?" I ask pointing to the paper.
She nods and we both make our ways there through the darkness, once again.
When we arrive, everyone is, like as usual, sat in a circle.
Tobias smiles at me and gestures towards the place next to him. I take a seat between him and Zeke, who scooted over as soon as I entered the room.
Christina looks at me and says, "I'll ask. Why are we here?"
"It was raining about half and hour ago." Zeke says. "I don't know about you, but I don't feel like sitting in the wet floor."
Right after I say, "He has a point." to Christina, the door opens revealing Lynn.
"Sorry I'm late." She says taking a seat between Four and I.
Zeke coughs and everyone looks at him.
"I have something... In my throat." He says between fake coughs.
"Dure, you're weird." Lynn says and takes off her leather jacket. "I brought cards." She announces, reaching one of her pockets.
She throws them to Zeke who starts to shuffle the cards.
Hours pass by in a whirl when you're having fun. In between the three different card games we played, the cake and the ton of laughs, we reached the conclusion that Christina can't play to save her life. Shauna, surprisingly won most of the games without knowing how. But at some point I noticed how Zeke swiftly switched one or two cards with her. I thought it was cute so I pretended I didn't saw it even though Zeke caught my eye.
"Finally!" Uriah shouts, throwing his four cards to the middle of the circle. He won this round with four kings.
Tobias lets out a sigh of frustration and throws his game to the middle of the circle as well. "Who had my ace?"
"Guilty!" Marlene giggles.
"Christina, how many times do I have to tell you you can only have four cards?" Uriah tells her, upon noticing she has more than six in her hands.
"I don't like this game." She says.
"You don't like it because you don't get it." Uriah rolls his eyes.
"Well look at that. It's almost 1am." Zeke says.
"We better get going then. Tonight's a school night." Marlene says dusting off her jeans.
We all get up and most of us clean the mess we've made.
Tobias helps me up and asks, "Can I hug you or is it too obvious?"
Feeling somewhat brave after winning two games in a row I decide to make a bold move. Who cares about the questions we'll be getting? If they are not asked today, they will be tomorrow or some other day. Smirking, I wrap my hands around his shoulders and say to him, "You can kiss me, if you want."
And he does.
The kiss is slow and passionate and makes everyone gasp. Except Zeke who ruins the moment.
"How cute!" He says in the girlish voice I've ever heard coming from him. "Now move, I need to reach the trash can."
We untangle from eachother and I take dumbfounded Christina by her arm.
"Good night everyone." I say closing the door behind me.
After taking a couple of steps Christina says, "You and I have a lot of catching up to do."
I nod at her words, "Yes ma'am".
Yay for me who finally decided to write again! I'm not going to lie, I've been procrastinating this chapters forever. I've officially run out of ideas. That's what happens when I remember to write stories as I go. I really should have planed this before I wrote it. But oh well. I hope you're still liking the story, and if you have any ideas don't be afraid to review of PM me.
