Yuugi silently grumbled to himself as he desperately tried to read the map. If only Jounouchi and Honda were still here! He had arrived in America with his two best friends on their way to see their other friend's show. Mazaki Anzu had finally become a broadway dancer just as she's hoped, and this was her first real show, so her friends had decided to go there as a surprise for her, to show their support.
So much for that.
"Gah! Stupid Jounouchi!" He growled. The blonde had a fairly good grasp of English, and knew enough to successfully ask for directions and call a cab, and with the other gone, Yuugi was left in the dust and feeling murderous. If he didn't find his friends soon, he'd-
"DUELING TOURNAMENT!"
Yuugi looked up sharply upon hearing a fellow Japanese-speaker. The other man seemed about his height - very short - with hair that was in a similar style and colours to his own, except the blonde part was styled differently and the rest was lined with bright red rather than purple. His eyes were also red, and contorted with annoyance and frustration. The man he was attempting to converse with looked very confused as he replied in English, Yuugi only being able to pick out a few words and understand what they meant.
"Sorry... Don't... speak chinese-"
"IT'S JAPANESE!" the man growled in anger, feeling insulted that his native language had been mistaken for another, and Yuugi couldn't help but feel the same. A lot of westerners seemed to make this mistake, and yet the spoken languages were nothing alike, even if they did both use completely different written forms to the english language. The other man seemed taken aback, obviously noticing the angered Japanese man's irritation and picking up on what he'd said, but only just.
"Sorry!" He sounded terrified, and for good reason; this man had a dangerous aura about him, and Yuugi would hate to get on his bad side. Maybe it would be a good time to say something; finding somebody else who would understand him in such a city seemed a rather rare stroke of luck.
"Hey!"
He turned around in surprise at hearing somebody else speaking Japanese, and their eyes instantly locked. "H-huh?" He seemed confused, and Yuugi grinned slightly.
"You lost?" Relief broke out on the red-eyed stranger's facer as he quickly approached Yuugi, speaking in frantic Japanese.
"Yes! Yes I am! I'm supposed to be here for the Duel Monsters tournament being held here this week, but I can't find it anywhere, I barely speak a word of English, and everyone else I've met so far has been useless!" He growled slightly, and Yuugi flinched back. Realizing his mistake, the stranger quickly grabbed his arm, worry and alarm on his face. "Ah, wait! I'm not mad at you, I'm just getting frustrated! Please don't leave me!"
The American began slowly edging away upon noticing the other two conversing, and was soon out of sight. Neither of them paid him any attention.
"Ah... I'm sort of lost, too..." Yuugi scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "See, I have to get to the dance studio... Anzu's performing there later today, and I promised her I'd be there-"
"She your girlfriend?"
He blinked at the question in surprise. "No... Just a friend. We've not seen each other in ages, and the truth is, I kinda got lost when I was here with my other friends... They're probably already there, now."
The other frowned for a moment, before it was replaced with a half-smile. "Ah... Well, in that case, let's be lost together. The tournament doesn't start until Wednesday, so why don't we go and find your friend's dance studio?" The smile warmed slightly. "I'm Yami. What's your name?"
"Yuugi." He returned the smile as they began walking aimlessly. "Thanks, by the way."
"Don't mention it."
After a few minutes of walking through the vast city, to their dismay, neither of them had made any progress, neither finding the dance studio or the duel monsters tournament, and Anzu's performance was only hours away.
"Hmm..." Yami grumbled slightly, before pointing out what looked to be a hotel. "Maybe we'll find someone who speaks Japanese there? After all, they probably get plenty of tourists..." Yuugi hummed in agreement as they made their way over.
Yuugi decided to try speaking this time, in order to avoid Yami potentially terrorizing another innocent bystander. After a few tries, the woman at the desk seemed to grasp the fact that he was Japanese, and after a few clicks of her laptop, she began to type an answer into google translate, translating her response to Japanese and showing them the screen.
"I'm sorry, but I don't speak Japanese. We do have one employee who does, though. He was just finishing his shift, but I'll see if I can convince him.'
Yami smiled at her initiative, and responded with a strongly-accented thanks in English. The woman smiled understandingly, and the two waited.
Eventually, another man appeared, with hair very similar to Yami's, but with maroon tips and burgundy eyes, and much tanner skin, seeming to be of Egyptian origin. He smirked at them for a moment, before speaking.
"So what is it you two want? I was just planning on getting home, but... I take it you two are lost?"
"Completely!" Yami groaned, gesturing around them. "We're supposed to be at the dance studio, my friend here wants to see another friend of his there."
"Ah..." He scrutinized both for a second, before ushering them out of the hotel. "Follow me. Say... How about I hang around with you two while you're here? I take it neither of you live here, and clearly you don't understand English. Maybe..." The smirk was back. "Maybe I could be your personal translator this week..."
"But won't you have work?"
"I broke my leg guiding two very attractive men around the city. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it." both blushed slightly at the implication, before he took ahold of their arms and dragged them away. "Now come on! Let's go and find your studio."
Sorry if it seemed rushed... I didn't want them meeting all at once, but I had to get them all to meet somehow. I actually had to cut away a part where Yami and Yuugi were discussing duel monsters on the way to the hotel, and that part would've been nice to have as it mentioned that Yami was the regional champion of Japan... Oh, well, I guess there's always the (potential) continuation... *Shrugs* Speaking of which, if anyone wants me to make a sequel of this so that they actually do get together in this AU, let me know and I'll write it in somewhere.
Also, I have to say, I'm so glad that you all seemed to like Nul last chapter! I honestly wasn't sue what you guys would make of him, I sorta expected you all to not be too keen, so that was a really nice surprise.
In other news, I have another fic in mind! It'll be a Yu-Gi-Oh and PMD crossover fic, most likely entitled, 'I'll Search The Skies', but I'm not too sure about the name yet. I'll be sure to keep you updated about any progress, I'm partways through the first chapter but it could be a long time before I upload. And of course, there will be Puzzleshipping. XD
