Chapter 20: The Aftermath
That's what friends are for, right?
My eyes jolted open and I flinched, bolting upright in my bed. Something stopped me half way, and I looked down to see that I was once again in chains. I groaned and leaned back against the bed.
I was in big big trouble. But I suppose that's not a hard inference when you wake up chained in a hospital bed. So what if Brooke saves the day, I thought to myself, let's just stick in a room and chain her instead because she may have broken a few rules here and there.
So I waited. A few moments later, a nurse came in and checked on me, said I had experienced serious trauma and passed out or something. Well, that's just great. I tried to ask her, wait no let me rephrase that, I demanded information about Dean and my brother, but there was no such luck. It was as I had turned into a brick wall.
But luckily, my time in the hospital gave me enough time to think. I thought about what happened, what should of happened and what I could do to stop it. And I came to the conclusion that what happened that day, was beyond any of our control. It was just bad timing. Of course, I seemed to notorious for having really bad luck.
My hospital room was very quiet, with the occasional infrequent nurse popping in to remind me that I had serious trauma and should rest, and then ignoring my request for whereabouts of my friends. However, about three days after I had been hospitalized, I had a quite peculiar visitor.
It was Helen: CEO of the Black Swan. I was kind of hoping maybe they would let not-Uncle Castor in, so to find this mysterious sly woman with her blackened teal eyes and sickly sweet condescending voice at my door made my heart sink.
Three things happened after that: 1) I was uncuffed from my bed 2) I was shoved into a wheelchair like I was lame and couldn't walk 3) I was handcuffed to the wheelchair. Fun.
Although this was the most eventful five minutes that I'd had in 3 days, I felt extremely frusterated that even after everything I had accomplished, everyone thought I was a criminal. From a innocent school girl to a juvenile. I thought A day iin the life of Brooke Matthews.
They let Helen take my wheelchair, which I wasn't the least bit happy about, but I grudgingly sat in my stupid wheelchair while she wheeled me around like a baby. I realized that I actually wasn't in a hospital, but rather a hospital room. As soon as Helen passed through the stereotypical medical sliding doors, I was right back in the Black Swan mansion. I thought about talking to Helen, but decided against it. This lady was CEO of some mysterious organization that I didn't even know the beginning of. One slight remark, one term out of line, and I didn't have a single doubt that this woman could make me disappear within 5 minutes of my mouth opening. Instead she spoke the first words.
"Brooklyn," She said, her voice purring slightly, forming some sort of accent that I hadn't really noticed before, and couldn't quite place. Her sickly sweet condescending voice extremely irritated me, however I proceeded to keep my mouth shut until she was done talking. "Tell me, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? What do you want from the Black Swan?"
"Nothing, ma'am," I said, slightly startled.
My wheelchair stopped. All at once, Helen was in front of me, slender fingers holding up my chin and compressing my jaw.
"Let me ask you that again, honey," Helen said as her blackened teal eyes darkened (if that's even possible) and her condescending voice slithered around the hallway, snaking it's way up the walls and along the floor. "What are you trying to accomplish?"
My eyes hardened. "Im trying to bring my family back together. I missed 14 years that I could have spent with a brother and parents that didn't have to keep secrets. I am trying to make sure that I don't miss any more. You should understand. Don't you want to bring your family back together as well?"
The fingers on my jaw squeezed tighter, and I winced.
"My husband was a bad influence for my daughter. Have you ever thought maybe Kalyn was a bad influence for you?"
"No." I said "Because family is family and whatever they are or may be, they will remain family."
Helen seemed unmoved. "I hope you know how much trouble you have caused us."
"I apologize for the inconvenience. But would you not risk your life for you daughter?"
Helen scowled "Not if it got in the way of the task at hand."
"Then you truly know nothing!" I cried, then closed my eyes as the silence echoed the halls.
I awaited my punishment, but instead I heard the click of handcuffs being undone.
"Go child." Helen sighed "What you have done is a noble act, and you should forgive me. The council has decided that we could use more people like you, who work in scenarios with a strong sense of a team. One day, maybe you will lead your own team on a mission, and you will be able to keep them alive."
"I highly doubt that..." I lowered my glance.
"The Black Swan will be happy to invite you back to become a member, you and your brother at the age of 16, when you are old enough. Maybe then you will be ready."
"I doubt it, but I will consider the offer."
"Good." Helen said, pointing to the third door on the right. "That will take you home if that is what you wish."
"Thank you" I turned to leave then stopped "I hope things turn out for you. Being the manager of everything is kind of hard if you don't have anyone to come back to. The Mesmer isn't a bad guy. He cares about you, and Marta. Maybe, maybe being a lady isn't everything. You're allowed to have fun too."
Then without an answer, I slipped through the door, eased to find a single pathfinder on the floor of an empty room.
I walked over and picked it up, pointing it to the sky.
"Im coming home." I thought happily, and the light came to meet me, and I was whisked away.
Me: So again I apologize for the hold up, and for this depressing chapter... Im afraid I've been extra busy.
Brooke: Author lady felt like this was a good place to end this chapter.
Dean: I'm excited-
Brooke: To figure out-
Dean: What-
Brooke: Happens-
Dean: Next!
Brooke and Dean: *hysterical laughing*

Solace: You guys are pathetic...you should really...let it go.
Solace, Dean, Brooke: *hysterically laughing*
Me: OMG. *deadpans*
D'Anna: Love is an open door...?

Kalyn: FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVERRRRRRRRRR, THEY'LL BE MAGIC THEY'LL BE LIGHTTTTTTTT
