An enormous pain shot through Link's chest. Was he alive still? Or was he...dead? No. He felt pain. You only felt pain if you were alive. His eyes were still adjusting to the minimal light offered in the space he was contained in. He groaned as he tried to sit up, but someone roughly shoved him back down.

"Ah!" He screamed. It was too dark to see that there had been another being in the room, and he was taken by surprise.

He was shushed by this mysterious silhouette. "Quiet. This takes concentration."

He furrowed his brows. The voice was male and had a smooth accent to it. He could have sworn he had heard it somewhere before, yet he couldn't quite place a finger on it. Then again, he was in immense pain, so it was hard to make sense of what was going on around him. He wasn't even sure he knew his left from his right.

"Why is it so dark?" That was the first sentence Link had said in quite some time. He could tell because his mouth was dry and tasted a bit...metallic. He could feel his face covered in a dried liquid and could only think that this was the cause of the metallic taste in his mouth.

"You're locked in one of the dungeons beneath this temple," the man hissed at him.

Ever so slowly, Link began to feel the pain in his chest receding. It seemed as if the man was doing something to heal him. He tried to get a better look at this man now that his eyes were better adjusted, but the man remained a silhouette.

"Are you a prisoner too?" Link asked slowly. He wanted to sit up, but didn't want to get pushed to the ground again.

The figure sighed. "Sometimes it may feel that way. But no. I am not." He placed his hands on Link's bare chest. Link wasn't quite sure how he felt about that.

"What are you doing?" He didn't mean to ask so many questions, but they just kind of spilled out of his mouth. Plus, it was a little awkward for another male to place their hands on his chest.

The man patted him slightly, which was also very...strange. "I was checking your wounds to see if I had healed them properly. I am no expert healer, but I guess I was the only one he trusted enough to heal you."

As he removed his hands, the man stepped away from Link. He sat up carefully. "Who are you? Why are you healing me? And who trusted you to do this to me?"

The shadow of a man grunted. "Can you really not recognize me?"

"Uh, no. I hate to break it to you, but it's a little dark in here." Link poked his chest. It had hurt so badly a minute ago, but now nothing seemed to be wrong.

"That's right," he said. "I forgot how weak Hylians' vision can be. You cannot see me in this light. It is me. Varlorion. My Master wanted me to heal you so that he could put you to work."

Link banged his head against the wall. "Not you again. I thought I was going to be rescued or something. So I'm basically stuck down here until it's time to do Ganondorf's bidding?"

The Imparian growled. "You speak with such causality. You throw my Master's name around as if it were nothing to you! Do you not realize who he is?! He is the Almighty and Powerful Lord Ganondorf! Do not mock him, boy!"

"Chill!" Link was still very tired from his fight with The Big G. (Now that was causality.) In any case, he was in no shape to argue with Var. He didn't want to fight him. He didn't even want to get angry. Link had a habit of letting his anger get the best of him, bit right now he was too stiff and too fatigued for it to even cross his mind. He was more than fatigued actually. He felt kind of...sick.

"Chill?!" He exclaimed. "CHILL?! You dare mock me? I may have just healed you, but I am not on your side! I will not 'chill' as you say to do! You cannot force me to do your bidding! I answer to no one but my master! I am completely loyal to my master!"

Link actually started laughing. He was pretty sure he was a tad delirious actually. "Your temper is even shorter than mine. I never doubted your loyalty to your master. I'm just tired. I didn't know what else to say." His head started hurting and chills were sent down his spine. He started giggling like a child.

"Are you laughing?" Var asked incredulously. "Is this your way of mocking me?"

Link shook his head and stopped laughing. "I'm not laughing, see?"

Varlorian huffed loudly and angrily. "You're not laughing now, but you were a second ago!"

"Really? A whole second ago?"

"Well, it was a couple of seconds ago at this point."

"Like, how many seconds?"

"I don't know. Thirty?"

"That's not exactly a second ago." Giggle.

"Aha! See you did it again! You mock me! You laugh at me!"

Two giggles. "I'm not doing it on purpose! It just kind of comes out of my body kind of like how all this cold sweat is coming out of my body."

Var shuffled uncomfortably. "That's absolutely disgusting. Why would you tell me that?"

Link's eyes started rolling back to his head, but he forced himself to remain conscious. Another noise escaped his throat. This time it was not a laugh though; it was a sickly cough. "Because you are a healer. You healed my wound. Can you heal my...headache? And my stomachache? And all this sticky stuff? And the weird metallic taste in my mouth?"

"That's gross," he stated.

Link furrowed his brows. That wasn't a very reassuring statement. "Can you heal me, or is something wrong?"

He leaned himself against the door and crossed his arms. "Nothing's wrong! I just simply do not want to be down here in your presence. However, my Master wants me to keep an eye on you."

Link started feeling even more queasy than before. His stomach churned and he felt a bead of sweat fall in his eyes. Then he emptied the contents of his stomach in a sticky mess beside him. Maybe now that he had puked Var would let him out of this cell so he could get cleaned up. Or at the very least heal him properly.

"Ew!" He exclaimed, grimacing. "Did you seriously have to do that?"

"I can't control it," he said. "My body is just doing these things on it's own. It all started whenever you healed me, with the exception of the sticky stuff on my face and he metallic taste in my mouth. In any case, it would probably help if you tried to heal me again."

Var let out a long sigh as he gave in and placed his hands on Link. He shouldn't be down here with the puking boy. Sheloh was the one who dragged Link down here in the first place. It should be her responsibility to heal him. Instead, Var was told to watch Link. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't so sick, but it was still as if Ganondorf didn't trust his loyalty enough to have him do anything else.

Loyalty was one of the things Var was confused about. He never understood why after the mass enihilation of his race, Ganondorf decided that he could trust to take in the only two survivors. He and Loh were somewhat young and impressionable, but how could his Master be so sure that they would easily accept someone to be their king who was not of their own race? Var struggled with that thought.

He should be up there ruling with Ganondorf. The Imparians were a mighty race before the horrifying genocide occurred. Sheloh had always been loyal to Ganon, but just because Var had maybe been a little bit more rebellious, he had to suffer through several painful beatings. He could not afford to be humiliated again, so he claimed to be completely loyal to his Master.

He was loyal to his Master. He really tried to be, anyway. Some things just didn't seem right to him. The beatings were cruel and painful. He understood that it was meant to teach him discipline, but would a master who truly cared for his servants do that? Var was unsure.

His Master always favored Loh over him. She was the goody-two-shoes. That's why she was up there with him, and he had to deal with this sick dog of a man. This was the job of that slimy vermin Nathair, not Var! Var was Ganondorf's right hand man, and he should be treated as such! If Nathair had taken his place, Var was certain he might just blow more than a fuse. His Master told him that he only trusted him to watch over Link.

But Ganondorf seemed to trust Var about as much as Var seemed to trust Ganondorf.

When Var deemed that Link was healed enough, he took his hands off and walked over to the door. He felt his own rage boil and churn inside of him. He took all of this anger out on the door. He kicked it and he punched it, and he really wanted to break something. The door did not give in though.

"Are you trying to break us out of here?" Link asked. He was much more coherent now, thankfully, so it seemed Var's healing did the trick this time.

Var exhaled slowly and put his fists at his side. "No. I wouldn't need to break us out of here. I can teleport out of here at any time I may want, however, if I did that I would be betraying my Master's orders. I cannot afford to have him trust me any less than he does."

"So it sounds like you've got some Daddy issues dealing with trust and stuff with Ganondorf. I say, you break us out of here, and we'll never have to deal with him again. Or, you can break us out of here and confront him about it. Either way, you might want to break us out of here." Link's words were lame excuses for, well, excuses.

"I'm afraid I can't do that," Var told him, trying to keep his cool. "My Master could kill me. As much as I may even want to free you, I have to remain down here and make sure you don't escape until Loh comes to fetch us."

Link stared into the blackness around him. "What if she never comes down here? What if you're just as trapped as me?"

The boy's words found a spot in Var's mind that he wish wasn't there. But Ganondorf was still his master and he was still his servant. Although Var's fidelity may seem like it was in question, he had never actually done anything so wrong to get him locked up in a dungeon. Plus, he could escape if it really came down to it.

No. It would never come down to it. Loh would come and tell him that he was needed back up there. He was an important asset to their little team, he liked to think. It would be hard to replace someone like him. He had powerful advantages over the other demons because he was an Imparian. He was important enough that when Ganondorf stumbled upon the damage and rubble caused by the great genocide, he found him and took him in. He was still here today, and he would always remain here...right?

The door started to open slowly. "Var! Our Master requests your assistance. He would like you to come with us as we use the Triforce."

Var had once been fond of Sheloh, but those days had passed. Her presence now irritated him more than it should. Still, he had never been happier to see her in his life. After being caught up in anxieties of never seeing her or Ganon again, he could kiss her. But he wouldn't really. "Great. What about the boy?"

Loh looked over at Link. He was staggering to his feet. "Just leave him down here. He shouldn't be able to escape."

That proved it. Ganondorf had given Var a useless job. It was about time he had a word with his Master. "Let's go."

When Var and Loh had teleported to report to Ganon, they heard their Master cackling. The girl, Zelda, seemed to be unconscious and was floating behind Master. Var realized that they were no longer in the depths of the temple. They were now outside, in what used to be the Sacred Realm.

Master's fingers were glowing golden as he absorbed the Triforce's powers. The girl made sounds of agony as the energy was being ripped out of the Triforce inside of her. She was not unconscious now. She was awake as ever and being tortured so that Ganondorf could fulfil his power-hungry desires. The girl screamed out once more, and Var felt his chest tighten. This wasn't right.

"Hey!" He called out, running to his Master. "Stop! If you drain too much energy from her, you'll kill her!"

Sheloh appeared beside him and made a mocking puppy dog face. "Look at that. The little boy's sweet on the little girl! Wimp!"

Var clenched his fist and faced his ex. "I'm not sweet on her. I'm just thinking logically, which no one around here ever seems to do. If the girl dies, the Triforce will relocate and we'll have to track it down again!"

Ganondorf released the girl from her floating position. She hit the ground with a hard thud, and her eyes rolled to the back of her head. The Master stepped toward Var and growled. "I was not killing her. I was simply absorbing some of the power that is now inside her. With this power, the Sacred Realm is mine."

Dark lightning and energy started coursing through Ganondorf's veins. He laughed manically. The energy gave him a rush. A high even, similar to one created by adrenaline. He rose up, changing the pureness that emanated from the Trifrorce into the darkest of all forces. With single waves of his hands, the realm started darkening.

Shadows took over the sunshiny world. The sky darkened. Plants blackened. This was not the Sacred Realm anymore. It had been changed. This was the Dark Realm. The goodness and purity was being corrupted. The Temple of Light in the background was no longer Light, but Dark. It was the Temple of Darkness.

"You haven't been honest with me," Var spat at Ganondorf. This was probably not wise since the man's veins were literally coursing with this new evil energy.

Master threw a shot that missed Var by centimeters. "What makes you think that?"

He gritted his teeth in frustration. "You gave me a job that 'only I could do.' You had me go watch the boy to make sure he didn't escape!"

"And did he?"

"No!" Var shouted. "He can't escape! He's bound in chains and locked in a cell! He can't just magically pull out energy from that Triforce like you can! It was a useless job! You don't trust me!"

Ganondorf floated back down and kicked some dirt in Var's general direction. "You haven't shown very much trust to me either. I don't have time to argue with you, rat."

"Rat?!" Var exclaimed. He gestured widly as he spoke. "I'm the rat?! You have these slimy little things slaving for you! Nathair is nothing compared to me! I am an Imparian! You took me in when all my race was destroyed because I showed potential!"

Ganondorf laughed. "Do you know why your race was destroyed?"

"The genocide. They were destroyed because other races saw them as a threat. A threat because they had power." Var crossed his arms. He should be glad that he was one of two who managed to escape and survive. Ganondorf seemed to be overstepping his boundaires though.

"Wrong!" Ganondorf boomed. How could Var be wrong? That is what happened. That's what Ganondorf explained when he was just an adolescent who needed saving from this near-omnipotent being. His family was gone, but his Master willingly brought him in.

Master smirked. "Your race was corrupted. That's why they were destroyed. They had power, which led to corruption. They were a threat to others. Namely one...the Gerudo." Var's brows furrowed, and Ganon bore some more teeth. "Yes. It was I who killed them all. You two younglings were saved because I was in need of more minions. You showed power without reaching this...corruption. I needed your assistance."

Var exploded with anger. "I AM DONE! I AM DONE WITH YOU AND YOUR LIES!" He started storming away, and Loh laughed. "ARE YOU LAUGHING?! DOES THAT NOT BOTHER YOU?!"

She shrugged. "Our race was corrupted. He saved us from corruption. Corruption equals destruction. If that means I get to live, I'm fine with it. We should be grateful for what he has done for us!"

Var started to teleport, but not without hearing, "He's always been such a Drama Queen. One with quite the temper too." Then her sick laugh. A laugh that had once thought was beautiful.

When he appeared in Link's cell, Var's emotions were all out of whack. He wasn't good with emotions. He did have quite the temper, but something else felt wrong. He wasn't quite sure what. Ganondorf had betrayed him. He had killed his family. And Sheloh shrugged it off like it was nothing. Maybe to her they were just a bunch of corrupted people, but to Var they were his family. It was wrong.

But what really bothered Var was that he didn't even believe that his race was ever even corrupted. What did it mean to be corrupted? Ganondorf was probably lying to him once again. Loh may want to follow their Master around, oblivious to his lies about their people, but Var knew better.

Ganon was power-hungry and destroyed the Imparians because they were a threat. Not because they were corrupted. Not because they were an "evil people". But because they were strong, Ganon worried about losing his power. He worried about these good-hearted people catching him in his evil acts. The best solution to maintain power was to destroy them. He got away with this by spreading lies amongst the Gerudo.

It was awfully hypocritical for someone to destroy an entire race of people for being corrupted when that person seemed to be the truly corrupted one.

"Oh, look who's back," Link spat, waking Varlorion from his thoughts. "I stayed healed this time. Actually, I still have that sticky stuff on my face and the metallicness in my mouth."

"BLOOD!" Var shouted. His anger was fueled by his realizations about his Master's betrayal. By all the lies he'd been told. And simply by the fact that the boy was whining again. "IT IS YOUR BLOOD, YOU FOOL!"

Link widened his eyes in shock at the Imparian's reaction. "Geez, I didn't need to get yelled at. My life already sucks enough right now, I don't need your anger management issues to screw it up even more. I mean, I'm just not in the mood to play any silly games with you."

"Neither am I," Var growled. He wasn't exactly sure what he was doing here. He really didn't want to deal with the boy. But maybe there was an offer on the table. He could help Link escape and get Zelda back if he could have revenge on his ex-master. And the best way to get revenge on Ganon would be with a taste of his own medicine. Betrayal.

Although Var wasn't thrilled about the possibility of having to collaborate with the boy, betraying Ganondorf was just the thing that he needed to do. Plus, if he teamed up with Link, they might actually have the skills to take Ganon down. Wonderful things might come from this...

Link rolled his eyes and shook his chains. "Then what do you want?"

"I'm here to break you out."
