One more chapter after this shorty! Unless of course, you guys want to see something happen before the end. Let me know!
Leonardo snuck into Astilla later that night. He crept his way down the main road, using the shadows of trees and ferns to hide him from the moon's glare. There were a couple men wandering the town together, chatting lightly about something; Leo couldn't understand what, and trying to figure it out was not a priority. As they passed his hiding spot, one said something and the other let out a wholehearted laugh. A woman from a nearby home yelled something out of her window. Leo knew what she was saying, judging by her annoyed tone. He stifled a chuckle as the two shut up and averted their gazes to the ground at the reprimand.
Once their backs were to him, Leo crept across the way and ducked beneath the windowsill of his targeted building. After once more checking his surroundings, he straightened so that his eyes could see what was going on in the house.
He immediately dropped back down at the sight of not only the girl he was looking for, but her brother as well. At least, until now, he had assumed it was her brother. Again he inched up to peer back into the room. Inside, the woman sat on the edge of a bed where the young boy was tucked in. She was leaning over him, singing a soft tune. One that had a slow melody, and though Leo didn't comprehend what was being said, he gathered it was quite sad.
The turtle listened on, subconsciously rising more to gain a better view. The melody had him drifting in thoughts and memories of old, where his father would sing to him and his brothers before they went to sleep. With a pang of guilt, he realized he hadn't thought about his home or family in some time. He forgot how much he missed them, but at the melancholy tune, it hit him again like a freight train. It couldn't be helped when his eyes began to water, and after further thought, a tear slid down his cheek.
After some time, the woman stopped her serenade and leant down to give the boy a loving kiss on the forehead. Then she spoke softly, "buenas noches."
"Buenas noches, mama."
The woman got up and left the room with her candle, leaving the boy to dream in the peaceful dark of night.
Leo shook his head and wiped at his face with his forearm, then proceeded to head around the corner of the house to find the girl's sleeping area. He berated himself en-route for letting his emotions slide, and assured himself that he could have a pity party later on.
Upon finding the window to the woman's room, he waited until she was in bed and breathing softly in the envelopes of sleep.
Once he deemed it safe, Leo took the necklace and placed it onto the nightstand beneath the window. He knew that once she awoke, it would be found and a horrifying realization would dawn upon her. Leo felt bad that she would discover the death of her parents this way, but there was nothing for it. At least she was not alone, she may have lost a husband, a father, and a mother, but she still had her kid.
With that reassuring thought, Leonardo turned to make his way back to his cave, where he would indeed spend another night all alone.
