Part 4

Three days later, Mello found that no matter what time he left the hotel, he had begun a routine of sorts. Go to Starbucks, pick up two coffees—the sweetened one for Matt that always made Mello smirk smugly—a snack for them, and a hot chocolate for the drive over. He usually stayed only a few hours, and as each day passed, the atmosphere was a little less tense. A little.

When Mello was over, Matt was usually doing something on his computer or watching something on the television. Mello didn't know if it was just because he was around or not.

"Matt, take your damn coffee before I drop it."

Matt sighed and snatched the one with the marketed 'M2' on the side; Mello had bought permanent marker just for that, since he liked his coffee a little different, and they kept getting mixed up. The one he bought for Matt was always sweeter and didn't have the chocolate powder on the top.

Mello watched as Matt lazily dissected and ate the randomly chosen treat he had picked up from Starbucks. It was some sort of cake. Mello hadn't bothered looking at the name, too happy that the chocolate chip scones were back.

"Matt, do you still game?"

Matt stiffened and paused in his eating. Mello narrowed his eyes; was there something bad connected to his games now too? Or was it because he was asking?

"I do." Matt's answer was still and almost confrontational.

Still, Mello couldn't help but push the subject. "Then why is it that whenever I am here, I don't see you so much as glance at one?" Matt didn't answer, almost ignoring him, and Mello was left with yet another mystery. Matt had never had this many secrets.

Things went kind of pear-shaped for a long while after, and Mello had considered leaving but was too stubborn to admit defeat even when it went over the three hour mark. Mello kicked off his boots and pulled his feet onto the couch, resting his knees under his chin.

He noticed Matt watching him but didn't comment and, instead, switched the television on. He couldn't stand the silence anymore as Matt's wall clock was driving him insane with the ticking.

"You act like you live here," Matt grumbled, tossing the empty paper bag from Starbucks at him.

"Only if I can have the loveseat," Mello shot back without thinking. He paused and wondered why he had started to form such an attachment to that damn piece of furniture. His arm brushed against the arm of the loveseat, and he shivered. Right, leather, that was why.

He had a slight leather fetish, so what? There were worse ones out there.

Matt scoffed at him and wheeled away to get something, probably his laptop.

The apartment was always so silent that Mello didn't understand how Matt could stand it. He had never thought of it before, but Matt did not have anyone living with him, and he didn't seem to go out much as he was always there when Mello arrived.

Matt did everything for himself, by himself simply because there was no one there for him, whether he wanted them there or not. Mello wondered, was there ever a time where Matt had seriously needed help and didn't have it?

Matt was resourceful and obviously able to get by on his own—that much was clear—but he couldn't have been this way the entire time. Perhaps that was part of the reason Matt was so closed off. He was used to being alone.

"Shit!"

Mello heard glass break before the swear and was immediately over by Matt, who appeared more irritated than anything else. He had apparently backed into the computer desk, and whatever had been on top of the monitor had fallen and knocked over a glass. Why Matt didn't have carpet over there, Mello did not know.

Mello immediately took hold of the mini-trashcan and began to pick up the larger pieces of the glass. The carpet was saturated with a light green liquid that Mello could only guess was the remnants of one of Matt's energy drinks. For someone who needed the floor neat and clean for themselves, Matt certainly didn't keep the computer desk clear.

Though, to be fair, almost none of the clutter was breakables. Save for the glass.

He felt Matt's eyes on him as he worked, and even with the television on, things felt silent, almost cold.

"I can get it," Matt told him.

Mello stopped, almost slicing a finger as glass slipped from his grasp and back to the floor, and tried not to snap at the redhead. "I know. But I'm here now, so I will clean it. When I leave, feel free to wreck the place and clean to your heart's content."

He understood what was going on in Matt's mind, probably for only this once, but Mello was doing him a favor, so he could at least not distract him. Matt ended up being a little less prickly after that. Mello wasn't sure where his thoughts had taken him now—ok, so he really had no idea—but it had to be something good as the ice age wasn't reflected in Matt's mood anymore.

Mello took the small hand vacuum cleaner that Matt handed him and made sure all the smaller glass pieces were gone before taking a trip downstairs, avoiding the elevator like the plague, to toss the glass in the apartments dumpster. The air outside was nice, and though it didn't smell particularity great, it was good to be in the late afternoon sun.

Mello hated doing any sort of housework type stuff but found that cleaning the glass hadn't annoyed him like it might usually have. He blamed it on all the caffeine he'd had in the last few days.

"Alright, I think I'm going to leave for today. See you soon, Matt."

Matt gave him a flippant wave goodbye, a clear dismissal, but there wasn't any real annoyance in it. Mello grinned. It was a good sign.

Mello left the apartment feeling good that day.

Too bad the phone call he got later killed his mood.
