A/N: Highschool AU fic.
This is not Gakuen hetalia, they are not countries. Because i usually turn the story angsty and one-sided in canon!verse.. Sorry about the last too
Soo here's some fluff as compensation, though I'm not entirely happy with how I wrote this..

Note: The origami notes bit was inspired from another fic which I cannot seem to be able to find at the moment, else I would have mentioned the name and author. If the author has a problem, then I'll edit/remove this fic.

Username?

Yao twirled a stand of his hair absent mindedly. He was bored out of his mind, and had somehow ended up on the Hetalia World Academy's anonymous chat page.

He did have friends, but didn't feel like talking to any of them at the moment. Im Yong Soo was too.. hyper, Leon was too emotionless, Lien could be downright scary at times, Mei had become distant, and Jun and Binh would give polite one word replies as they were too nice to say that they didn't want to talk to him at that moment.

"Hmm username aru?" He rested his chin on his palm.

Peoniesandpandas

Yao scoffed as he clicked continue.
As if anyone was going to be on this thing. Others weren't as jobless as him. Well, he wasn't jobless. He had lots of work to do, he just didn't feel like doing it. In his defense, it was the week end so he could afford to procrastinate. It's not like he could completely ignore it though, he was a good student who wanted to keep his grades up.

You are chatting with mochi101

Mochi101? What kind of a username was that anyway.

Mochi101: Hello.

Peoniesandpandas: hi

Mochi101: How are you?

Peoniesandpandas: very bored xD

Mochi101: lol.

Peoniesandpandas: :P and you?

Mochi101: I'm fine, thank you.

Peoniesandpandas: soo what are your subjects?

Mochi101: Mathematics, Computing, Chemistry, Physics, Art, English, Japanese and Chinese.

Peoniesandpandas: Wow that's a lot.. You must be smart :D

Mochi101: Ahh.. Thank you but not really.. What about you?

Peoniesandpandas: Maths, chemistry, physics, biology, economics, english and chinese. Japanese and Chinese are an odd combo, not many people have it..

Mochi101: Well, I'm Japanese and my interest in Chinese came from.. Err.. A certain person.. And you? Why do you learn Chinese?

Peoniesandpandas: it's my mother tongue :)

Mochi101: Oh! I'm sorry..

Peoniesandpandas: Don't need to be :) hey my Chinese class is pretty small, maybe I know you already!

Mochi101: I don't think so.. I'm in the lower level Chinese class and you're probably in the high level. Also, we may be in different grades.

Peoniesandpandas: oh ya.. ^^"

So what do you like to do in your free time? Other than talk to random people xD

Mochi101: Haha.. Umm.. I like reading manga/watching anime, drawing, playing video games with my friend, and learning to use different software like MMD.. You?

Peoniesandpandas: martial arts, music and cooking. I'm actually in the kung fu and music clubs :D I play the keyboard

Mochi101: Wow! That's really great.. I actually admire the people in the kung fu club a lot..

Peoniesandpandas: You've done martial arts?

Mochi101: A little bit of karate back in Japan when I was younger, but I don't remember much..

Peoniesandpandas: nice :)

This person was pretty nice to talk to. Yao looked up from his laptop, grinning, and found all of his friends standing by the door starting at him.
"W-what are all of you doing here?!"

"You'd said you'd make us all ramen for dinner tonight, " deadpanned Leon.

Yao smacked himself on the head, "Aiyaa! I completely forgot! You guys wait here, I'll make some very quickly."

Peoniesandpandas: I have to go! Nice talking to you :)

Mochi101: Wait! What's your name?

Peoniesandpandas: you can call me China ;) my number's 8934895457 if you want to text me..

Peoniesandpandas has disconnected

After half an hour Yao emerged from the kitchen with bowls of ramen and a plate of sushi.

"Look guys! I even made sushi! You know, as compensation for making you all wait.." said Yao with a sheepish laugh.

After finishing his ramen, Yao checked his phone.

1 text message from 9047921796

Hello China. This is Japan.

Yao grinned.

Hi! :D

"Bye Yao!~" yelled Yong Soo after he finished his ramen, "Thank you for the meal!"
All of them said their thanks to Yao before heading back.
"You're welcome aru!"

After they had all gone, Yao settled down on his bed.

What happened? Why did you have to leave?

Well I had told my friends I'd make dinner for them today but then I completely forgot about it..

Oh ok. What did you make?

Ramen and sushie ^_^

But that's Japanese..?

Yeah.. Chinese and Japanese food are my specialties.. My interest in Japanese is fairly recent though, I've been learning many new Japanese recipes lately! Especially since my friends like it so much.. haha

I'm glad you like my country's food

:) Anyways, good night!

Good night

Kiku kept his phone on the side table and got into bed.
Whoever 'China' was, he liked talking to them.
He'd only gone on to the uni's chat website as Alfred had insisted that he should take a break from his studies and he hadn't really had anything better to do.

The next day, during his free period, Kiku wandered off towards the kung fu club again.
He smiled to himself when he saw that Yao was there.
Yao doing kung fu always mesmerised him.
He was currently stretching. How anyone could lift their leg that high would remain a mystery to him. He really envied Yao's flexibility.

Yao grinned when he caught sight of Kiku. He would do all his moves with extra determination and focus today. What?! Of course he did not want to show off! He just wanted to improve his kung fu.. Well, the focus part was debatable anyway.

"What are you doing here?" hissed Lien at Kiku.

"I-I umm.."

"Lien," warned Yao, "He is welcome to watch if he likes."
He flashed a brief smile in Kiku's direction.

"Anyways, you want to practice?"

"Uh ok." Said Lien sulkily.

They both bowed to each other and then took their stances, with their hands in front of them, one being closer to their face. Yao's hands were open while Lien's were clenched into fists. They both waited for the other to make a move.
Eventually Lien kicked out at Yao, but he caught hold of her ankle and disbalanced her.
She dislodged her leg from his grip, regained her balance and dodged Yao's punches.
Yao jumped up, avoiding Lien's low kick and blocked her punches with his arms.

After a while the two were quite exhausted.
"You've improved a lot Lien! That was really good!"

"Uh thanks Yao. I have to get ready for class now, bye."

Yao untied his now messy hair and combed through it with his fingers to untangle it.

Kiku, who had not been able to take his eyes off the duo, blushed. If there was one thing that really flustered him was Yao with his hair open. He imagined combing his fingers through those silky bangs and his face heated up. Shit. What if Yao saw his beetroot red face? He hurried out of the room.

Yao noticed Kiku leave, disappointed. He still had half an hour before his next class started. Maybe he would go get some tea. He headed for the canteen after retying his hair.

After the hectic day at the academy, he collapsed onto his bed upon entering his dorm.
His phone beeped.

1 new message from Japan

How was your day?

Good but tiring. You?

Same..

He wondered if Japan's love life was as sad as his.

Hey Japan, do you like anyone?

He waited. No reply.
'It's ok.. Maybe he had some work to do.' He thought to himself.

After dinner, he checked his phone. Still no reply
'What if I've offended him?!' he thought.

I'm really sorry Japan, I didn't mean to be rude! Please don't be mad..

I'm not mad China-san. I was cleaning out my drawer and didn't see your message. Sorry about that.. And to answer your previous question, yes I do.

Oh ok.. So you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?

No.. I don't believe that they even know my name..

Oh.. It is sort of the same with me..

I have class early tomorrow so I'm going to bed now.. I'll talk to you later, good night.

Good night

Kiku glanced at the sheets of origami paper he had found in his drawer, before getting into bed. That gave him an idea..

Yao sighed as he opened his locker. The week had been exhausting so far. He couldn't wait for the weekend. A piece of paper fell out as he yanked the door open.
"Eh?!"

He picked up the pink piece of paper and examined it.
It was an origami flower. He turned it around to find a small Chinese poem written on it. Apparently the person who had slipped it into his locker admired him very much. He put the paper into his bag without much thought. The person was probably a fan of his kung fu or music, if the note was not put into the wrong locker that is. This was probably a one-time occurrence and he'd probably never here from the person again.

Yao's classes went on as usual, with no interesting occurrences. During his one hour free period he headed to the library to finish some assignments.

As he headed towards the section which had books on Asian languages he saw Kiku balanced on a stool and reaching for a book on the top most shelf, with a bunch of papers in his other hand.

He's going to fall' thought Yao in alarm, rushing towards him.
As if on cue, Kiku lost his balance.
Yao caught him mid fall and placed him gently on the ground.

"Are you alright aru?!"
Kiku could feel his pulse racing, half from the panic of falling and half from the embarrassment.

"Hai, arigatou.. I-I mean yes, t-thanks.."

Yao smile and ruffled his hair.
"You should be more careful! You could have gotten a nasty injury!"
He then collected all the fallen papers and handed them to Kiku.
"Are these peonies and chrysanthemums?" asked Yao, gesturing to the drawing of flowers on one of the papers.

Kiku nodded, staring at the floor.
"I-I have to go, thank you again,." Muttered Kiku before dashing out off the library.

'Well.. That was strange..' mused Yao with a light pink dusting on his cheeks.

Upon arriving at his dorm at the end of the day, he was once again greeted by a text message from Japan.

After talking about random things such as their interests, the weather and whatnot, they once again veered towards the topic of their crushes.

Soo Japan, what does your crush look like?

Umm well.. They have long brown hair and really pretty golden eyes that seems to have stars in them. They look really beautiful with their hair open but they usually tie it. I don't really know how to explain everything but.. When they're near me I just want to keep looking at them. Your turn now, China-san.

Wow.. looks like you really like this person.. As for my crush, he's the cutest person ever. Haha. He's so diligent and hardworking and well-mannered and polite and.. gentleman-like? And when he's trying hard to concentrate at something his eyebrows furrow just the slightest bit and he nibbles on his lower lip without realising it and when he's accomplished something there's this spark in his eyes and he has this small, adorable smile and. I sound like a stalker ^_^"

No not at all, China-san, that was really very sweet.. I hope you end up together

You too! I'll talk to you later ok? I have to finish an assignment. I sort of bumped into him at the library today and after that I was too distracted and was unable to finish my work..^^"

Oh! So did I! Ok, I'll talk to you later..

The next day, Yao found an origami dragon upon opening his locker. This one also had a Chinese poem on it. Yao blushed. Apparently his admirer found him attractive also.

"What is that Yao?!" exclaimed Yong Soo, who happened to be passing by, "Is that a love letter?! Ooh Yao has a secret admirer da-ze!"

"Go away Yong Soo,"
Yao swatted the Korean's hands away as they attempted to snatch the note.

This continued for the next few days, Yao kept receiving a new origami shape each day with a short Chinese poem. It was evident that his secret admirer liked him. A lot.

He also talked to Japan almost every day.

Any success with 'golden eyes'? :P
asked Yao after a profound discussion of what they wanted to do with their lives.

('Maybe I should open a hello-kitty merchandise manufacturing factory!' Yao had said.
'I believe you are capable of a more challenging career, China-san, but if that is what you really want to do then you should open a hello-kitty factory.' Had been Kiku's reply.)

Haha no.. What about you?

Nah..

After some thought, Kiku began to type;

'Well, I've been sending them anonymous origami notes recently though..'

Before he could press send, he receive another message from China.

Oh I forgot to tell you! I've been receiving origami notes for the past few days from an anonymous admirer or something..

Kiku almost choked on the water he had been drinking.
He had never deleted one of his draft messages so fast before in his life.

Kiku sat still for a while. He had been talking to Yao himself all this time.
His phone beeped.

Japan?

Kiku took a deep breath.

Ahh interesting. What do you think of.. the matter?

I do not know.. It is sweet, but sadly I cannot return their affections.

Kiku's stomach twisted in an unpleasant way.
And in a few minutes, tear drops fell on to his phone's screen, making the text blurry.
The world had somehow got duller between the few moments.

Yao probably liked Arthur, since his crush was a 'gentleman'.

Because of gentleman-san, right?

:) ;)

Umm I think I'll go to bed now, I'm not feeling very well..

Are you ok?!

Yes, it's just a cold, no need to worry..

Oh ok.. Good night :)

Kiku cried himself to sleep that night.

In the morning he was more at peace with himself, though he still felt empty and had a slight headache.
He glanced at the last remaining origami sheet and smiled.
So Yao liked hello kitty huh?

He folded the sheet into hello kitty's face, and drew on the eyes, nose and whiskers.
Absent mindedly, he also drew on a weird, creepy mouth.

"Oh no! Now what? I don't even have more paper," exclaimed Kiku.
He sighed.
"I suppose it will have to do. I just hope Yao-san does not hate it.."

After slipping the note into Yao's locker as usual, Kiku stood behind a corner, wanting to witness Yao's reaction.

He saw Yao come in from the gate, head towards his locker and open it.
"Aiyaa! This is so cute aru!"

Kiku smiled.

'I wonder how he found out that I liked Hello Kitty though,' thought Yao as he put the note in his bag. 'Maybe I should not talk about Hello Kitty so much.'

It was after a few days that 'China' became insistent on meeting him.

Hey Japan, don't you think we should meet? I'm sure we'd get along really well..

I don't that would be a very good idea..

But why not?!

I don't think it will the same if we know who we actually are.

Alright fine. Though I don't agree with you.

Which grade are you in by the way?

11th, and you?

You aren't trying to find out who I am, right China-san?

No! Not at all! What makes you think that?!

Nothing..

It was Japan's mysteriousness and secrecy which made Yao more curious than ever as to the identity of his friend.

The next day, Yao approached Mei, who was in 11th grade and took both Chinese and Japanese.

"Hey Mei! Do any Japanese people in your grade take both Chinese and Japanese?"

"Only Kiku, why?"

Yao gaped. His knees felt weak.

"Yao? Are you ok?"

"Y-yes, of course." Yao gave her a sheepish grin.

Mei gave him an odd look, rolled her eyes and walked away.

Yao went to class early.
He needed to be alone. He needed to sit down and think.

Yao kept laughing to himself in random bursts. He'd probably gone mad. But it was kind of funny actually. All this time he had been rambling about his crush on Kiku to Kiku himself. At least Kiku did not know who 'China' or even who 'gentleman' was. Actually Kiku had himself nicknamed his crush 'gentleman' as it was easier to refer to him while texting.
Yao's giggles turned into soft sobs as the realisation struck him. Curse this 'golden eyes'.
He suddenly sat up straight as he put two and two together, his eyes wide. Of course, Kiku had a crush on Lien! The long hair, golden eyes. No wonder he came to the kung fu club so often.

Yao slouched back. He didn't know how he would be able to talk to 'Japan' in the same way now.

He entered his dorm after school still feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Beep.

China-san, I really am sorry about not agreeing to meet you in person. I hope you're not mad at me.

No! I understand what you were talking about now. I suppose there are some mysteries which are best left alone, haha..

I'm glad you understand..

'That was strange,' thought Kiku, 'Yao seemed so stubborn about it yesterday.'

The next day after school, Arthur, Alfred, Ludwig and Feliciano dragged him to a pub.
He returned to his dorm late at night, drunk, with his mind spinning.
He checked his phone and was disappointed to find that there were no messages from China.

Yaoo! Plleease don't be mads at me
I loeve youu ok.. a lott-

Kiku are you okay?!
... Are you drunk?

The second Yao sent the text he realised three things;
1. 'Japan' knew that he was Yao
2. He had typed Kiku instead of Japan.
3. KIKU WAS APPARENTLY CONFESSING HIS LOVE TO HIM.

Amidst all the confusion Yao felt the tingling sensation of hope.

The next morning Kiku had a terrible headache.
Upon reading Yao's message, he was confused. He then checked his sent folder.
His eyes widened in panic as he read his last sent message.

I am so sorry China-san. That was my friend fooling around with my phone..

Wait how did 'China' know he was Kiku?

…..

When Yao heard the text message alert, he eagerly checked his phone.
..Only to have the little bit of hope fade out again.

Oh ok. But how did you know I was Yao?

Umm I figured it out.. There aren't many Chinese students in 12th grade who take science, play the keyboard, do kung fu, and love hello kitty.
But how did you know I was Kiku?

Well I asked Mei, a friend of mine whose in 11th grade and takes Chinese and Japanese, if there were any Japanese people in both those classes, and she said there was only you.

But you said you wouldn't use my grade to find out about me..

I know, but I was really curious.. I'm sorry..

There was no reply.
Even when Yao returned after school there was no reply.

Yao sighed. This whole affair was driving him crazy.

Kiku, I need to talk to you. Is 4.30 pm tomorrow at HetaCafe fine?

There was no reply. He'd wait there at that time anyways. If Kiku didn't come, or things didn't work out, he would try his best to forget him.

Kiku please. I need to talk to you at least one last time. I will never bother you again after that if that's what you want.

No reply again.

...

Kiku curled up against himself. He felt sad and angry and confused and betrayed. He did not know what he was going to. He did not know what he wanted to do.

The next day at 4.35 pm an extremely nervous Kiku entered HetaCafe.
He caught sight of Yao siting at one of the tables with an empty cup of tea beside him.

Yao smiled and waved at him.
It felt like his heart did a backflip.

"I thought you wouldn't come.." said Yao awkwardly.

"Am I late..?"
Kiku stared at his lap, fidgeting with his hands.

"Ah no.. I was early. Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

Yao took a deep breath. It was now or never.

"I like you."

Kiku's head snapped up. His eyes were wide and his cheeks were flushed.

"S-sorry?"

"I like you," repeated Yao.

Kiku blanked out. Of all the things he had been expecting, he certainly didn't expect this. He had no idea how to respond.

Yao waited patiently but apprehensively. He half expected Kiku to get up and leave.

Kiku did get up. Yao stared at him wide eyed.
..But he came towards him instead.

He wrapped his arms around Yao and mumbled, "I like you too."

Yao gaped. Then grinned and hugged Kiku back.
"I am so happy aru."

Kiku just snuggled closer to him.

Yao then smirked as he had an idea.
He picked Kiku up bridal style and carried him towards his dorm.

"Y-Yao-san! What are you doing?!" squeaked a flustered, squirming Kiku.

Yao just grinned.

"P-please put me down.."

Yao stopped.
"I'll put you down if you really want me to."

Kiku's face reddened. "It's not that," mumbled Kiku, "So many people.."

"Alright then! We will go through the back alley. My dorm is actually quite close to the café."

Kiku squirmed initially but eventually relaxed.

"You're quite strong Yao-san."

Yao grinned, "I thought you'd have figured that out by now, what with all the times you came to stare at me during Kung Fu practice.."

Kiku blushed and looked away.

"Also, you're pretty light."

...

On entering Yao's dorm, Yao tripped on something and both of them landed on the bed.

They looked wide eyed at each other, then burst out laughing.

Yao smirked while reaching for his hair tie. "Apparently 'Japan' seems to like 'Golden eyes' with his hair open a lot."

"Y-Yao-san whined Kiku."

Yao's hair cascaded down on either side.
Kiku hesitantly reached for it. Gently combing his fingers through it. It did indeed feel like silk.

Yao leaned until his bangs hid their faces from view and his lips grazed Kiku's.

He then turned around and flopped on to the bed, lying beside Kiku.
Both of them were smiling and giggling.

"Hey Kiku?"

"Hmm?"

"Was it you who put the origami notes in my locker?"

"Hai.. That is how I found out you were Yao actually. When you told me about receiving the notes."

Yao grinned. Not bad Kiku, "You're quite good at Chinese poetry."

"T-thanks.."

...

The two spent the evening watching their favourite movies together and getting to know what they already didn't know about each other.

Yao even made some of his specialty Chinese and Japanese dishes for dinner. Kiku loved them.

Yao eventually fell asleep while they were cuddling.
As Kiku tried to leave, Yao caught hold of his hand.

"Please don't leave," he mumbled in his sleep.

Ludwig-san, I won't be coming back to our dorm tonight..

Kiku thought that Ludwig would probably assume that he would be at Alfred and Arthur's, which he did.

Kiku ended up falling asleep curled up next to Yao.

The next morning Yao woke up to a breakfast of miso soup, rice and grilled fish which Kiku had made for him. He learnt that Kiku was a pretty good Japanese cook.

"Hey Kiku."

"Hmm?"

"Do you know how to make mochi?"

"Yes, why?"

"Can you teach me?"

Kiku smiled, "Only if you help me with my Chinese."

Yao grinned back.

"Deal."
