Dream a Dream with Me

I dreamed about a jungle. Thick tall trees blocked the light. Dark green shadows hid the ground and the dangers lurking there. In front of us a waterfall poured out of the mountain side, falling and roaring down the moss encrusted rock face; the splashing water sparking in the light. We held hands and pushed through the under growth. Not too smart but we made it safely to the edge of the water.

So dream with me, my love. We lay partially in the water; sinking our toes in the sand. The cool, clear water soothed our heated skin and small pale fish nibbled at our toes. I turned to you and held out my hand again. This time you took it and mocked the fish by nibbling on my fingers. Slowly I was pulled into the waters and your arms held me afloat.

God, I loved you. Here we were alone. Here was peace and a gentle light. Here was only the delicate touch of your fingers against my skin. With my eyes closed I floated away into a clear night sky with only your hands and lips to fasten me to the Earth.

I knew it was a dream. The waterfall, the dark jungle floor, the scurry of unseen life and the fish kisses; it was all a dream. When I woke there would only be the long, long road and the dusty fields and the pounding sunlight illuminating a landscape that stretched forever.

I licked my dry lips; the wind over the Nebraska prairie sucked all the moisture out of my skin practically on contact. No wonder I was dreaming of jungle waterfalls. Far off on the horizon there was hope of a change. A weather front was approaching promising cooler air and maybe some rain. This drought had dried the state to the point where the air was full of dust and by nightfall a shower was an absolute necessity to sluice the dried up prairie off your skin.

I rolled my head to the side, resting it on the back of the bench seat and stared at Sam. It had been his turn to drive the Impala across this boring ass state. I had needed sleep badly after 24 non-stop hours out of Colorado. We were flying over the mid-west trying to get to Sioux Falls and cooler weather. The world had gone mad this summer. The plains states were drying up and blowing away. My world was narrowing down to my brother's eyes.

Sam glanced over at me. "Hi there, Sleeping Beauty; back with me now?"

He settled more comfortably into the seat, one hand on the steering wheel and one out the window holding on to the roof. The Impala ate the miles, spitting them out from under her wheels and leaving the long dusty streak of pavement behind.

"How much longer is it to nightfall, Sam?" I yawned and stretched and casually let my arm fall on the ridge of the seat back.

"You just woke up. You want to go back to sleep again?" He laughed at me and glanced at my face.

"Not particularly but I sure as hell could use a shower. I was dreaming of a waterfall and swimming in a jungle pool. The closest I can get is a shower, I guess."

Sam laughed again. "Was I invited to this private swimming pool party?"

"Yes, you were there. The fish were nibbling on your toes and you were giggling like a loon."

"Better be careful there, big brother. I'm perfectly capable of driving right past the next motel and letting you suffer just that much longer."

I smiled and pushed my fingers through his hair, "Even if I invite you in to share the water with me? Would that make you happy?"

"Sure. I can handle that. Sounds like fun."

"Even if I can't guarantee you little fish nibbling on your toes?" Now it was my turn to laugh.

"In that case I guess you're going to have to take their place and nibble on me yourself."

I smiled and lay my head back on the seat. "Sounds like a plan. I'll look forward to it."
