Chapter 13: Irrelevant.

Matt found himself sitting in Near's head quarters.
He made himself more comfortable by sitting back on the leather couch available, he propped up his legs on the near by table, pulled out his PSP, and began to play a game he was recently hooked on. Might as well take it easy while I wait, Matt had thought. Considering how Near liked to take his time by stalling the poor visitors.

Roger came back in with a cart full of a variety of chocolate snacks. Matt paused his game for a bit to stare hard at what was in front of him, to then look at Roger with curiosity.

"Those for me?" Matt questioned Roger.

"No, but if you'd like something I could bring it to you. Just ask away Matt." Replied Roger.

"No thanks Roger, in fact... I'll take a glass of water." Murmured Matt, as he continued his game. All the while wishing the points he earned in games was all he needed to survive in real life.

Roger nodded, walking off to bring Matt his request. On with his video game, he easily kept passing level after level, only to then notice someones eyes in the back of his head. Looking behind; Matt saw it was Near looking at the game being played on his PSP screen.

"Your quite good at these video games Matt. Tell me... Are all levels like in your games count for scoring in real life too?" Near asked sounding a bit sarcastic.

Matt could only stare at the albino. Wondering if he was trying to start an argument, or a real conversation. Matt pulled out a cancer stick to smoke, making Near snatch it, and split it in half playfully. Only to toss it back to Matt.

"There will be no smoking in my presence Matt." Near said casually. Causing the red head to glare at him.

"So, what do you want Near? I'm sure you din't want me visiting. So spiel it. What do you want?" Matt questioned a bit irritated.

"Oh nothing harsh about your bad habits, just a bit of information I would like to tell you about. I think you have a right to know after all." Near responded back.

The room was quite, and negative between them. Near starred off for a few minutes. As if trying to think about something else witty to say, but Matt could tell Near was getting to business.

"Do you realize what is going on in the news recently? People have been dying." Near said.

"Nothing new I don't know about." Matt said back.

"Dying without explanation again..." Near added.

Matt eyed Near for awhile, as to what he was implying.

"If it's by Death Notebooks, leave me out of it. I'm working on something else. So go involve someone else to die for you. I'm not in the mood to die right now." Matt murmured, as he got up to leave the room. Taking a sip of water from the cup Roger just brought him. Placing it back on the table, as the ice cubes colliding made little noises.

"So, your leaving now, leaving to warm up Mello's seat again?" Near question. Only to get Linda's attention finally away from drawing, since she had been sitting in the back of the room all along. Matt stopped in his tracks, not looking behind at all, just standing there.

"Are you trying to make me feel bad Near?" Asked Matt nonchalantly.

"No, I just also thought you should know your best friend is very much alive. That's all. So you might want to re-think things before getting settled down." responded Near back, no fear in his monotone voice.

Before Near knew what was going on. Matt had slammed Near into the wall. Holding onto Near's colored white shirt with one hand, while the other gripped the PSP. Matt said nothing. He only kept his glare connected into Near's dead eyes. Filled with no emotions. Near starred at Linda. Stopping her worried reaction with a sign of his hand.

"It's okay Linda." Near reassured her. Looking back at a serious Matt.

"When it comes to friends... Don't play those mind games with me. You can play anything else, but know when to not cross the line. Got it Near?" Matt said aggressively, pushing Near away from him as he walked off to take his leave. Thanking Linda and Roger for having him over for a visit.

"Are you okay Near?" Linda asked concerned.

"I'm fine. I just wondered how he would take it. I guess he does not believe my words unless he see's for himself. Honestly... People let emotions get the better of them..." Near whispered, looking towards the wall, then to look back at the exit door being slammed shut.

Matt got in his car, in which he had tailed Roger with. Sitting for awhile there in silence. Catching up to the loneliness he knew for awhile back. Only to then realize Sidoh was still beside him. After all this time.

"So Shinigami... What is it that keeps you here?" Matt questioned, leaning against the steering wheel. Eye's glued into the road ahead he would soon be driving towards.
