She wanted to be a supportive girlfriend, but she couldn't help the fact that she was out of her element. Sophie stood in front of some modern art piece that could easily have been created by her half-brother Jack. No matter how hard she stared at it, she still didn't get it. Well at least the wine was free and all.
Sian had asked her girlfriend to come to a meet-and-greet that was being put on for the new Man U law students. It had taken some cajoling and pouting but Sophie had finally agreed to go. Sophie still didn't know why Sian had even bothered. Sian had always been easy at being social. She was also gorgeous. That was just obvious. Even in school, even after coming out, she had been able to make friends and thrive despite being different.
Sophie felt comfortable in Weatherfield where everyone knows everyone but she wasn't used to anywhere nice and classy. Her mum was the kind who always tried to fit in with this lot. The brunette just felt a bit awkward and didn't know what to talk about.
After initially arriving Sophie had found a way to fade into the background and allow her girl to thrive. Of course the blonde had been surrounded by fellows intent on chatting her up from the moment they walked in. It was just like when they went out anywhere. When they were in a club the duo quickly and firmly dispatched any men that bothered them with amusing relish. However Sophie figured that these were her girlfriend's peers that she'd have to work with, so she let it go. And found this corner having grabbed a glass.
"I don't get this at all" she heard the woman walking towards her while pointing at the painting on the wall. The brunette was in her 20s wearing a one-piece black jumpsuit. She was well fit with an accent that sounded a bit Scousey. She had been talking with various groups since they had arrived. Sophie guessed that she was a law student and she didn't seem to be with anyone. Sophie had clocked the woman checking her out as she went to get a drink.
"Well don't ask me. I think it's just ruining a perfectly good frame" Sophie smirked.
"Melissa, Corporate law" she introduced herself.
"Sophie, Girlfriend" the brunette countered.
Melissa nodded. They regarded the room. "You're not like these blerts aye?" she said indicating the rest of the party.
"No. Here for moral support-like" Sophie replied.
"Let me guess" the woman paused giving Sophie the once over. "Salford?" she guessed after a moment.
"Weatherfield" Sophie confirmed.
Melissa looked relieved. "Oh thank god. You're not one of these posh twats" Melissa laughed. "I'm from Sheffield," she said taking a sip of her wine. "Oh wait! Sorry if one of these posh's is your fella, sometimes my mouth can't be stopped by my manners" she apologized.
Sophie sized the woman up. She was wearing a black jumpsuit that was cinched at the waist with a belt. High Heels. It wasn't something that you typically saw walking the cobbles of a village, but probably in a club in Manchester. The woman was fit enough for it anyway. Sophie noticed that she held her head high. No insecurities for her. In many ways she reminded her of Carla Connor, although younger. She was definitely darker than the rest of the pale lasses about the room. They probably never saw the outside of a library. This woman wasn't Sophie's type but she it was nice to be chatted up for a change of pace. This one was definitely into having it large.
"Don't worry I'm not with any of these men. Not my type" Sophie said nodding her head toward where her girlfriend was talking to a couple. Thankfully Melissa quickly put two and two together as Sophie could see the gears turning.
"Oh aye! That yor bird? She's well fit" Melissa laughed smirking.
"Yeah, that's my girl" Sophie smiled proudly.
"Good on you. All the lads are gagging for her. Almost feel sorry for them" Melissa sipped from her glass. "Well it's just my luck that the only other lezzers here are with each other" she sighed.
"Oh aye?" Sophie asked even though it would confirm what she sensed already.
"Haven't had a heterosexual thought since I was 13" the other girl chuckled. "Another drink?" she asked rising up her glass.
Sophie nodded offering up her empty wine glass ready for a refill.
After her glass was refilled they sat down. Sophie liked having someone to talk to at this party and besides that Melissa was a right laugh.
She kept an eye on Sian just to make sure she was all right. Sophie needn't have bothered though. She seemed to be getting along brilliant.
"She'll be fine. Stop fretting" Melissa laughed.
"Oi! I know" Sophie chucked back at her. "She works as a bar maid, I know she can handle anything that kicks off" Sophie nodded. "Maybe I just like watching her because she so fit" Sophie winked and sipped her drink.
Melissa rolled her eyes. "Oh god, aren't you too precious" Melissa mocked her.
"Yeah well she's precious to me" Sophie smiled.
"Gag me" Melissa made a noise similar to choking. "It's gross how in it you two are. Why aren't you over there with her then?" Melissa asked.
"Dunno just figured she'd be better on her own. I mean I'm just some chav from Weatherfield, best let her get in good with them before inflicting myself aye?" Sophie tried to explain.
"Found a friend have we?" Sophie heard above her. The tone was civil, but with a hint of the mardy. Sophie tried to let that go for the moment but knew what was coming.
Having knocked back a few too many they'd chosen to get a room for the night in Manchester. They were plenty knackered as well, wanting to just strip down and just climb into bed. Sophie noticed that her girlfriend seemed to be a bit quiet as they left the party. She knew from the uneasy silence that something was up.
"You were well cozy with that woman in the jumpsuit" Sian said with a bit of mardy still in her tone.
"Oi! You're one to talk with all the men gagging after you" Sophie protested. She leaned against the wall all of sudden feeling too tired to fight. "Babe can we just skip the part where you're jealous for nothing and make up" Sophie yawned.
"I just don't get why you always do that" her girlfriend exclaimed as she emerged from the bathroom. "You always duck out the moment we get anywhere outside of Weatherfield. I have to stand it alone. Are you too ashamed to stand with me?" Sian crossed her arms defensively and looked down.
It hurt like a clamp around Sophie's heart. Tears pricked at the back of her eyes as she got up to wrap her arms around her girlfriend. She pecked her on the side of the head.
"Babe, It's not that" she said in a low voice. "I just thought that you'd rather I stay out of the way so that you can look brilliant" Sophie shrugged.
She looked into her with big brown eyes and took her face in both hands. "Sophie, you never see it" she swept aside a stray strand of brown hair. "You make me look good you silly goose" she grinned.
Sophie rolled her eyes. But then rested her head on her forehead. "Really?" Sophie said shyly.
"Of course. Stop fishing" Sian said as she leaned in and brushed Sophie's lips with her own.
They came apart slowly with no need to rush.
"I love you" Sophie whispered.
"Don't ever forget it" Sian returned lightly rubbing Sophie's nose giggling. She turned back toward the bathroom to finish up.
"You know what would also be nice?" the blonde shouted laughingly. Sophie sat down on the bed and removed her top with another yawn. She really was knackered. "If you weren't such a lesbian magnet everywhere we go that'd be great," she said cheekily.
Sophie had never been a guy magnet ever, especially not with Rosie beside her. It used to get her down when she was younger. Before Ben, she had only had mates like Chesney. Since then she just figured that most men could smell the gay on her and were just repulsed. However it seemed that any lesbian around would just clock her instantly. Even girls who may not even be able to admit that they are. It was like a super power really.
"I can't help it" Sophie replied. She really couldn't. "And Melissa was nice you know. She was like us," Sophie explained lying back.
"Oh I know that! She was well into you" Sian said slipping out of her dress for the evening.
"Whatever" Sophie shook her head. "She can sling her hook. All I did was tell her about my gorgeous girlfriend" Sophie finished climbing into bed.
"You better have" Sian said slipping in beside her.
"I meant like us as in" Sophie explained "that she wasn't posh and pale like the rest there."
"You're so daft sometimes" Sian shook her head. "It's not like everyone who works with their hands is brilliant or that anyone who doesn't is posh" Sian scoffed. "Makes me miss America sometimes. They don't care about this stuff" she yawned.
"But they don't have me aye?" Sophie smirked placing her hands on the girl's hips. It was a weak spot on the other girl's body. She knew that she was having the desired effect when she heard a low moan.
"I guess but you're still daft" Sian moaned turning toward her. "And your standing near me next time so that I can bore everyone with how gorgeous you are" Sian smirked.
Suddenly Sophie wasn't so tired.
Driving back to Weatherfield Sophie's phone buzzed. Since she was at the wheel she looked over at the passenger seat. "Can you see who that is?" she asked. Sian picked it up from Sophie's bag. Her face instantaneously toward downward and her forehead wrinkled.
"What's it say babe?" Sophie asked as she made the exit turn into the village.
"It's from Sally. She wants to see you right away" Sian said as a worried look ran across her face.
