Chapter 37: Fast Line.
As cold as it felt, Matt did not roll up his windows. His car sped off into the road ahead as he thought of his last moments with Sayu. How she held onto his gloved hands before him leaving, and how they kissed; probably for the last time. Sure they should not be thinking so negative, but they we're going up against a number of people, including Shinigami's. And that alone was enough to worry. Not all the Shinigami's we're the same as Ryuk. It could very well be a reckless mission, where at the end of the day they had to worry about the Shinigami, not the people. Preparation for possible death had to be considered. Where nothingness and coldness awaited anyone at this point.
Some of the men posted there in the Wammy house awaited further instructions from Seur. With guns in hand, and grenades in pocket. The children at the Wammy house could only watch as they're safe haven was being invaded by intruders.
Near, and the rest of the SPK stood they're ground in this case, getting prepared for whatever came they're way.
"Now, I'm not aware if this gear wearing to conceal our faces makes any differences to the Shinigami. Be discrete as possible. One by one, we will get through this." Near reassured.
Linda stared in disbelief, seeing Near actually take place in this. Sure he was willing to go through any means like when the angry Kira worshipers had the SPK surrounded. This thought... it was like going to a battlefield, war... Linda's thoughts on this we're silenced at the sight of Near now looking her way. Startled by this sudden confrontation right in close eye range with her, Near kept his gaze on Linda. Making her feel all the more nervous.
"There's nothing to worry about Linda. Please stay here if you'd like. Keep an eye on us in the monitors as we enter the Wammy house. Be our eyes and ears as we go blind into now enemy territory." Near told a now slightly teary eyed Linda.
Near felt a strange sensation he has never really payed attention to, but for now it seemed like he could only just to that. Look at this girl always by his side... as he mentally kicked himself for some words of comfort to throw at this girl, but he did not have to say anything as she threw her arms around Near. Startling not only him, but the rest of the SPK; as they looked away quickly trying to mind they're business, even thought it was in plain sight.
"Stay safe Near... Please don't get yourself killed." Pleaded Linda as she held tighter onto Near. As Near too, slowly put his arms around Linda's waist. Actually hugging her back.
Causing a domino affect, everyone left the room a bit abruptly, Matsuda staying behind to look, only to be swiftly pulled by Aizawa and Ide. Accompanied by lectures from Yamamoto as well. Making an irritated Matsuda complain and follow along.
"I'll stay safe." Near concluded.
"You better... Or I'll throw all your toys away in anger towards you." Said a teary Linda. Catching Near in surprise by that side comment. Kissing his cheek, she quickly parted from Near's arms looking elsewhere, as Near felt his cheek with one hand. Further in awe, but trying best to keep his composure.
"Thank you Linda." Near said now, looking elsewhere as she did, curling a strand of his hair as he usually did.
Linda smiled, she never got this reaction from Near, and simply loved it. Deciding if he ever made it alive out of this mission, she'd make it a mission of winning over his heart. Because at this point; they only had each other, not to mention how she has felt for Near since the day they have met for the very first time.
As the whole SPK began to move out, they brought Rat out along with them. He looked very sick, and like he needed a good shower. All his pride through the ordeal was shamed, but not once did he speak. He would almost see himself beginning to crack, yet he would catch himself regardless; on the nick of time. For this Near had to admit; he din't see that coming, since Rat tended to act on instinct; like a dangerous cornered animal.
"S, here as you requested; Rat." Near confirmed.
"Thank you N. Now as me and Rat leave, once we are out of your view, we will drop all threats to you and the Wammy house." Seur said. Seeming in his cheerful demeanor all the while out numbered, but with power.
Near and the SPK slowly let go of Rat, who surprisingly walked in a fast pace, regardless of the pain and weakness he felt. Now beside Seur. They took off, making Terr leave the SPK to follow Seur; his father.
"T!" Rester called out.
"Leave him. We will catch up to them." Near said, picking up the device that Seur left behind intentionally that could lead to the demise of the SPK and the Wammy house.
"Yeah, Near's right. We can catch up to them. We have a tracker on T. So we will have no problem catching up in time." Gevanni assured.
...
Seur along with Rat managed on time to reach the vehicle Seur had came in. Seur handed Rat a gun, allowing himself to take one as well. Terr ran towards them, as if expecting them to stop for him. Rat pulled out his gun through the lowering window opening. Directing it towards Terr.
"Step back you bastard. Don't get near us. We are leaving. So get over your grudge." Rat spatted out.
Terr remained at his spot. Never paying mind to Rat's words. Instead looking at his father; Seur.
"Dad... Seur... Why did you kill... Sister Lilith?" Asked Terr. A bit of hatred in his voice peeking out.
Seur's smile vanished, as he let go of the steering wheel.
"You want to know why I killed your mother? Or rather why I sent Rat to do it? Because your mother thought it wise to leave me; after we had gotten out of that hell hole. Without explanation; telling me I knew why she was leaving, and that she would be taking our son; you... I further found out she gave herself to "God"... Becoming a sister; raising you in the hell hole we urged to get out of, we're the only importance was to serve the higher ups with our gifts, and knowledge... She thought she owed the Wammy house for they're "caring" of us. She thought I was ignorant and selfish for not going along. We are not in dept with them. We owe them nothing! We we're merely pawns in a game. And that is kindness?" Seur said with equal hatred in his voice.
Causing both Terr and Rat to stay silent. Never had they expected an explanation, yet here they we're getting it.
"Are you satisfied with that answer son?" Seur asked sarcastically.
Terr was ready and willing to aim the gun at his father to shoot, but Rat beat him to it, and shot first as they drove off, missing Terr's chest with his arm instead, as Terr shouted in pain.
"Damn you..." Terr managed to say as he too got in his car to follow them.
Hitting speed, Terr quickly followed. With intent to kill. He knew now the reason to his mother's murder, and pursued his father at all cost. He could not let him get away, now that he finally got the lead, thanks to continuously following Rat every step of the way.
...
At the Wammy's house, Matt was present; in Winchester, England. Disarming the bombs placed at the orphanage he grew up in. Him and Mello we're able to take out the men stationed there fairly easy. The harder task was trying not to make a mistake with these set up bombs. He had to hurry at all cost, because apparently some we're timers set to explode at a specific time. Currently the time was now at 7 minutes, and 40 seconds/07:40. Mello on the mean time urged the staff, and the orphans to evacuate in case.
They however knew nothing of the bomb that was solitary at the Wammy's chapel. And there in the first row seat sat Maria. She sat there looking rather peaceful towards the statue of God before her. Creston stood there behind the child, in the second row of seats.
"Maria... What are you thinking of? Are you worried for being brought here against your will? do you miss your mother? or both?" Creston asked curiously.
Maria looked at the Shinigami, then looked back at the statue in front of her.
"I'm wondering why God just watches as the lives of innocent people are taking... That, and I wonder if I to will be watched by God as I am murdered... Never to see my mother..." Maria whispered; a little worried about her current situation. Before Creston could give any comfort thought, Seur entered the Chapel.
"You know why I have brought you here child? Because you have something that belongs to me. The notebook you possess. I never gave up ownership to you. I only let you hold it safe. Because no one would suspect a child to hold onto a murder weapon..." Seur said confidently. Stepping closer to Maria, extending a hand to her. Waiting to receive the notebook.
Maria looked his way, then at Creston. Creston nodded.
She was thinking of what Creston had told her earlier. That as long as she gave back the notebook to the rightful owner; she'd get to see her mother again. A promise Creston made to her. So she willingly took the notebook out from her backpack. Slowly handing it to Seur. He took it in unison, and Seur took a moment to look at the notebook in awe.
"Such a wonderful tool. This death note..." Seur said lovingly. As he flipped through the pages, to find a blank page.
-...
Elsewhere, back with Sayu, she searched where she had last placed the Death Notes she had hiding. The one she took from Matt's apartment, and the one her brother... had giving her. Light...
As she had dug them back up, she swiftly ran inside her house again, trying to find a match to dispose of these notebooks, when Sayu's gazed soon was caught by the lighter left behind she recognized; Matt's lighter to be precise. Then it only made her remember how he had left it behind during they're last moments before stepping out of the house to say they're goodbyes... He had left it saying he would not need it in hell; with all the flames there. Trying to be sarcastic during these tough moments. That upset her, because she never wanted to think of the worse. Yet it could not be avoided with several Shinigami around.
Sayu switched the lighter on, and the flame was summoned to her call. As she silently stood there burning Matt, and Mello's notebook first, letting it turn into ash in the sink. Grabbing the next notebook, the one Sayu had gotten from her now brother Shinigami; was next in line to burn, starring at it thought for several minutes; she slowly let the flame held go, as she slowly put that notebook in her possession into her purse. She had to use it. Just this once...
Well, thanks to those of you who read. Until next chapter.
