Only the Beginning

Luna appeared baffled for a moment. "How do you prove to be Ravenclaw?"

Riddle stretched out his hand towards the door. "You show me," he gestured.

"The sorting hat can prove it," Luna offered timidly.

Riddle pulled back his hand and crossed them in front of his chest. "Then I suppose you wouldn't mind explaining to Professor Dippet why the Sorting Hat would be floating on thin air."

Luna's brow furrowed. Professor Dippet seemed to be the Headmaster he had mentioned before and whom he thought would also have trouble seeing her. "Why don't you think he would be able to see me?"

Riddle's expression grew impatient. "Dumbledore is the wisest wizard I know. There's no way he couldn't have seen you and yet Dippet would." He paused for a moment, seeming to be deep in thought.

Luna had to agree that Tom made sense. Then why could he see her then? Could Tom be even more powerful than her Headmaster since he was the only one who could see her? Was this what he was pondering about also? She wanted to ask him personally but was afraid of the answer he might give her. He was. She looked over at him and realized that he had been observing her this whole time. Luna couldn't help but feel herself squirm under his gaze. His eyes seem so full of emotion and yet so empty, full of mystery and intrigue yet hollow.

Despite himself, Riddle had to roll his eyes. Usually no student could generate this much frustration in him. Frustration would only show that they had an effect on him. No one could influence Tom Riddle, only he had influence on others. "Would you like to proceed now? Perhaps sometime in this century?" he mocked.

She did it again. She could feel the blood rushing to her cheeks. She hurried past him and took hold of the knocker and let it drop once. The eagle came to life and spoke, "What is etched into Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem?"

A soft, retrospective smile grew on Luna's face. "You know my father is working on recreating it. It is said to contain magical powers that could enhance the wearer's wisdom and knowledge." She was finally glad to come across something familiar, something she knew the answer to. "'Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure.'"

"Correct!" the eagle trilled. The door swung open, revealing Ravenclaw's common room. It was a spacious, circular room with a high domed ceiling that was decorated with painted stars. Tall, arched windows graced the walls and were draped with blue silks imitating a starry night. Straight ahead were the two staircases leading up to the boys' and girls' dormitories. Standing in between the entrance was the marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw and her diadem.

"That was a rather easy question." Luna was pleased that she had not embarrassed herself in front of Riddle. She had not been sure if the door would open for her. She had felt long ago that this was not the Hogwarts she grew up in in the last 4 years. Luna turned to look at Riddle, expecting to see that he would finally believe her. She was disappointed to say the least.

He was still staring at her with his cold, calculating gaze. The fact that she had answered correctly and got the door open had nothing to do with relieving the fact that she was truly a Ravenclaw student. He had wanted her to fail. He had thought this would reveal that all she was telling him previously were lies. He had wanted to watch her struggle to explain herself, to come up with pathetic excuses that he could amuse himself with. It would have made more sense if she was not of this school and was appearing invisible to everyone, but now that she is indeed a Ravenclaw, it was much more puzzling now to solve this mystery.

"Have I proven myself?" Luna inquired. She really just wanted to climb into her own bed and pull the covers over her head so all this could go away. Nothing about becoming invisible and nothing about having to do anything with this mysterious boy. She missed hearing Matilda's voice telling her what a stupid necklace she was wearing or what ugly hair colour she had.

"This isn't over," Riddle scowled. "This is only the beginning," he threatened.

Riddle's words crawled down Luna's spine and sent out a cold dread reaching to every corner of her body. This is only the beginning. She knew Riddle was not lying. He would not stop questioning her until she is exposed as what she is, to which Luna wasn't even sure herself. Even then, Luna had a feeling he would not stop. No, she was his problem now and there was no way of stopping him. "Should I be going then?" she stuttered out.

Riddle took a swift step towards her and closed the distance between them in a flash. He towered over her, a full head and a half taller. He wanted to show her, show all who were able to see, the status quo. He held the power and he was the only one who can dismiss her. "I'll be seeing you around." Riddle swept out of the corridor and down the staircase.

Luna was stunned by what had just happened. She was sure her heart had stopped when she saw Riddle take that step towards her. Her mind went through a million scenarios a second. Perhaps he had decided against letting her live and decided to kill her or maybe even wanted to give her a hug for congratulating that she'd won a competition and will be receiving a pet Blibbering Humdinger. Being around Tom Riddle was not only emotionally tiring, it was physically also. One moment she felt like she was drowning in cold dread, the next she felt like she was being burned at the stake. Luna was unsure of what this boy wants with her, but she knew for certain that she was not going to come out of this unscathed whatever this might be. He would leave a mark on her. Emotional and physical.

Luna stepped through the door and entered the common room. Luna noted that it looked the same but with a few differences. Rowena Ravenclaw's statue seemed to gleam a bit more in the fire light. She seemed glossier, maybe even newer. Luna brushed it off as a recent waxing done by the school's house-elves. She immediately headed up the stairs towards her bedroom. Just thinking about the comfy sheets and the soft mattress almost made her forget about the series of events that had just happened moments ago. Luna thought to herself that maybe a good night's sleep would erase all this and tomorrow would be a brand new day. Maybe, just maybe...

Luna opened the door slowly and crept into the room. All five of her roommates were already in bed snoozing. Luna stopped. There were five bodies in five beds. Had she gotten the wrong room? That was impossible. Luna could not count how many times she's walked up to this bedroom for the last 4 years. She quietly and quickly tiptoed to what was supposed to be her bed and peered in to see who it was. A girl looking around to be the age of 13 was snoring softly in deep slumber. Luna had never seen this girl before and would not have known she was Ravenclaw. Luna crept back out the room and shut the door noiselessly behind her. She descended down the stairs back into the common room in deep thought. First, Professor Dumbledore was no longer the the Headmaster of Hogwarts and was appearing younger. Second, she could not be seen by anybody except for a peculiar boy named Tom Riddle. Third, she had no where to sleep in her own house. Clearly, she was not meant to be here.

Luna plopped herself down on the velvet arm chair in front of the fireplace. She looked out the window and thought how just last night she was sitting quietly by her windowsill and looking out at the same Dark Forest dreaming of tomorrow. Little did she know that tomorrow had turned out exactly the way she had not thought it would. She decided that this arm chair was to be her bed for the night. Before shutting her eyes and falling into a restless sleep, her mind became clouded by a pair of eerie, green eyes.
