The next day, Anna found Jeremy in the town square in the middle of the mayor's speech. She'd spoken with Lexi and Rose after leaving the other night and it turned out, they could feel that something was wrong, too and had agreed to keep an eye out for anything weird.
"So, what are we doing here?" She heard Jeremy asking.
"Tobias fell is the head of the history department. I didn't have a choice." Alaric told him.
"All right, that explains what you're doing here."
"Well, I'm the one who can fail you if you don't help me out." Anna had to keep herself from laughing.
"Hey, sorry I'm late." Elena said, running over. "What did I miss?"
"Just a bunch of historical lies." Anna said, surprising both siblings.
"Ignore her. You didn't miss anything." Jeremy told her. To Anna, he whispered, "What are you doing here?"
"Remember what we talked about last night?" Anna asked him. "Turns out I'm not the only ghost experiencing anything weird." Elena looked at them, wondering what was going on. "The other girls and I are keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary."
"So, you're here for what? Protection?" Jeremy asked.
"No, but I'm thinking you and Bonnie need to keep an eye out, too." Anna said. "After all, you two are the only humans that we know of that have abilities connected to our world."
"So, what's going on?" Elena asked them.
"I'll explain later." Jeremy promised.
"I'm going to let Bonnie know. I'll be back soon." Anna told him.
"I think she's hanging lanterns by the trees." Elena said.
"Thanks." Anna said. She ran off.
Sure enough, she found Bonnie with Caroline by the trees, hanging lanterns. "I know it's crazy, but I get a bad feeling when Anna's around lately." She told Caroline.
"Are you sure you aren't just jealous?" Caroline asked her.
"Why would I be jealous?"
"Because she's your boyfriend's spirit guardian." Caroline said. "And thinking of them together makes you feel really mad, doesn't it?"
"I know, it's really stupid, and Anna's nice." Bonnie sighed. "I wish I didn't feel this way about her. I've been so cold to them lately." Anna had been watching the entire scene from behind her.
"If things were reversed, I'd probably feel the same way." She said, not realizing she'd spoken until Bonnie turned and saw her. She seemed shock.
"How long have you been here?" Bonnie asked, slightly embarrassed that she'd heard their conversation.
"That doesn't matter." Anna pointed out. "But something's going on with some of the ghosts. I wanted to make sure you'd be safe."
"So you came here to warn us." Bonnie said.
"I just don't want anything to happen to you." Anna told her. "We don't know if the dark spirits are planning anything or if some of them have already shown up, but…"
"Don't worry. I won't be alone in this." Bonnie said. "And I can save myself if I have to."
"Okay." Anna said. "Just, be careful." She felt Jeremy calling her and disappeared.
"So, what'd she come to warn us about?" Caroline asked Bonnie.
"Ghost world problems." Bonnie told her. "I'll finish explaining while we hang the rest of these up." She held up a lantern.
At the Grill, Anna showed up outside, where everyone else was sitting. Lexi was also there. "What's up?"
"Shh. I don't want them to know I'm here yet." She told her. She was hiding behind the corner that led to the alley.
"So, what's up?" Jeremy asked.
"I know it's slightly risky with everything going on, but I was thinking of calling Lexi." Elena told him. "I've been going through Stefan's old journals. Every single time that he's gone off the rails in the past, she's been the one to bring him back."
"It's not a bad idea." Anna said. "But you're right about one thing, it could be risky. I've been picking up on so many others in the area, most of them bad."
"Wow."
"So, there's a possibility that she could be here?"
"Maybe." Anna said. "But I wouldn't try calling her with everyone around right now."
Bonnie and Caroline were still talking. "I think Anna was right, though. I keep seeing people that I know are dead."
"So, being a witch automatically gives you mediator-based powers?" Caroline asked.
"Something like that." Bonnie told her. She picked up her bag, but everything fell out. Including her grimoire. She was about to pick it up, when the wind blew it open to a page.
"Did you grimoire just…" Caroline began.
"I think so." Bonnie said. She picked up the book and read the spell. "It's a manifestation spell. It's used to reveal veiled matter."
"What's veiled matter?" Caroline asked her.
"Ghosts." Bonnie told her.
They headed to the abandoned witch house. "You couldn't have picked a different location to do this spell?" Caroline asked her.
"I know it's creepy, but we needed a private place around here to do the spell and this was the closest location." Bonnie pointed out.
"There's no chance it's haunted by the hundred dead witches who were horrifically burned to death in this very spot, is there?" Caroline asked.
"If they are here, I don't think they'll get in our way." Bonnie said. "Even in death, witches tend to protect their own kind."
"Right."
At the Grill, Jeremy headed into the bathrooms. Anna appeared beside him. "Do you have any idea what's happening at your end?" He asked her.
"No." Anna said. "I have no idea what's going on, but we're all really concerned."
"You think the witch that helped Vicki might have something to do with it?" Jeremy asked.
"Maybe." Anna said. "But I've never seen her before and if she's left the door open, it can't be a good sign."
"Well, I trust you." Jeremy said. "You've been helping us since the day we met."
"I know. But we probably shouldn't be talking right now." Anna said. "I'm still a ghost and if any of the bad ones knew I was still talking with you…"
"It could be trouble." Jeremy said, though he still seemed a little sad about it. "I get it. But how do I stop thinking about you?"
"I…" This caught Anna off guard. "I don't know. But the only reason we're still here is because you brought me here."
"Right. So, now what?"
"I'm going to slip out and try to investigate. I thought I saw Rose around somewhere." Anna said. "But before I do…I want to try something." She placed her hands on Jeremy's shoulders, gently, because she didn't want to accidentally hurt him. She leaned closer and kissed him lightly.
Jeremy was surprised when he felt her lips touch his. She pulled away quickly. "I'm sorry. It's just…I always wanted to do that." She disappeared from view before he could say anything.
At the witch house, Caroline finished lighting the candles, while Bonnie was already casting the spell. Wind started blowing hard in the room. Caroline was starting to feel a little scared. Then she noticed a familiar figure sitting in front of Bonnie. "Oh, my God. Is that your..." Bonnie opened her eyes to see Sheila in front of her.
"Grams."
Back in the Grill, Elena found Jeremy near the restrooms, alone. "Everything okay here?" She asked him.
"Yeah, I think so." Jeremy said. He was a little confused as to why Anna had suddenly disappeared after kissing him, though. He let Elena lead him back into the Grill.
Meanwhile, Alaric and Damon were sitting at the bar when a guy showed up. "Mason?" Damon turned and saw Mason Lockwood sitting next to him. Then he turned back to Alaric.
"Wait, how can you see him?" Alaric shrugged.
"I'm guessing your witch cast a spell to make us visible." Mason said.
"What are you doing here?" Bonnie asked her grandmother.
"Emily sent me to investigate matters." Sheila explained. "One of the witches over here interfered with your spell the other night."
"How?" Bonnie asked, eyes widening in surprise.
"When you sent Vicki Donovan back, the witch used her power to keep the door between our worlds open." Sheila said.
"Wait, I thought that only people with strong connections to spirits could see them." Caroline said. "Obviously witches and mediators can see all of them, but still…"
"Well, Caroline, it's like this. The veil between the ghost world and the living has always been around." Sheila explained. "But not all spirits are the good kind, so the veil is meant to keep them…"
"From getting out." Bonnie said, figuring out what her grandmother was saying. "So if we don't close it, we could be facing some old enemies." Sheila nodded in conformation. "But how did you know…"
"Witches talk, even on the other side. Let's just leave it at that."
"What does this witch want?" Bonnie asked.
"That's Original vampire business, not yours. I don't want you getting in the middle of that." Sheila told her. "You need to close that door, get those other ghosts sent away."
"Will I still be able to see you?" Bonnie asked, worried about losing one of her again.
"Anytime you need me." Sheila told her gently. "The veil doesn't effect those of us that are bonded to the living, just dark spirits."
At the Grill, Elena was on the phone with Bonnie when Anna returned. " How do we do that?"
"Apparently the old witch can draw power from this side because of her talisman." Caroline told her.
"Talisman... My necklace?"
"It's some ju ju power source. And I know you're not going to like this, but Bonnie needs to destroy it." Caroline said.
"Well, if it's what we have to do to keep them from getting out…" Elena said. "Except I don't have the necklace. Damon has it somewhere. Text him. I'll call you right back."
"What's up?" Jeremy asked.
"Apparently some witch thought it'd be a good idea to open the door between here and The Other Side."
"That explains why I can feel you." Anna said, looking at Jeremy. Elena raised her eyebrows. Anna groaned. "That came out so wrong."
"So, you guys are like human or something?" Jeremy asked.
"Well, with it the veil either down or the door opened, I guess it puts us in a state where we're sort-of alive." Anna said. "Once we get things back to normal, we'll just be like normal spirits again." Jeremy looked at her. Elena seemed surprised.
"Okay, what is going on with you two?" She asked them.
"Nothing." They said at the same time. Now she looked even more suspicious.
"Elena!" The group turned. Lexi ran over to them.
"Lexi, you're here." Elena said, surprised to see her.
"You really think I'd leave my best friend in trouble?" Lexi pointed out.
"You've seen him?" Elena asked.
"Yeah, it's not good. Klaus really went too far with this one." Lexi said. "This might be hard, but I'm going to need your help."
"Go on." Jeremy said. "We'll keep an eye out for any enemies." Anna nodded. Elena hesitated, but followed Lexi out of the Grill.
Meanwhile, Damon was texting Caroline at the bar. "I am never going to hear the end of that damn necklace." He said.
"Well, if it's the only way to end this stupid spell…" Mason pointed out.
"Speaking of which, why did you show up here?" Damon asked. "Shouldn't you be helping your nephew?"
"I've tried talking to him. Look, I know he's sired to Klaus. He won't listen to me, though." Mason said. "Jules and I have tried to get through to him, but nothing's worked. That's why I'm here, Damon. I need your help."
"What makes you think Tyler will listen to me?" Damon asked him. "As long as Klaus is alive, he's still sired to him."
"Unless you found a weapon that could kill him." Mason pointed out.
"You know something, don't you?" Damon asked. "Here's what I don't get, why ask me to help?"
"Because you're the only person who can see me that isn't stuck under Klaus' spell." Mason pointed out. "And as much as I like Caroline, she still doesn't trust us."
"Considering your girlfriend Jules nearly killed her, can you really blame her?" Alaric pointed out. Damon and Mason looked at him. "Sorry, I'm leaving." He got up to leave.
"Sorry about killing you before."
"To be fair, I probably deserved it." Mason told him. "Meet me at the old Lockwood cellar. I think I know something that might help us save Tyler and your brother." He disappeared then.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" A female voice asked Damon.
"I don't have a choice. But just in case, I'm going to need you to stay close by."
"No problem. I'm pretty good at sticking to the shadows, remember?"
A few hours later, Damon and Mason met outside the Lockwood Cellar. "You showed up."
"Well, I don't have much choice here, our only other lead disappeared." Damon pointed out.
"Mikael? Yeah, that didn't work out."
"How'd you know about…"
"Ghosts talk. And I overheard your brunette guardian talking about it with couple former vampires." Mason explained.
"Right, forgot about that." Damon said. "So, what are we looking for?"
"There's an old Lockwood family legend about a weapon that can kill an original vampire. Like the rest of their secrets, they kept it buried." Mason explained. He tried to break an entrance into a wall with a shovel. Nothing happened.
"Let me try." Damon took the shovel and managed to knock it down. They looked at it. "Go for it."
"You first."
"What, you think I'm leading you into a trap?" Mason asked.
"The thought crossed my mind." They both entered the tunnel.
Meanwhile, in town, Anna was looking for Jeremy. Then she heard a voice she was hoping she would never hear again. "Well, well." She turned around.
"Fredrick."
"If it isn't Pearl's daughter. Little Annabelle." She took a step back. "Too bad your mother isn't here to protect you now."
"What the hell would you know about her, anyway?" Anna pointed out, getting angry. She never liked him.
"Anna!" They turned. Jeremy was headed toward them.
"Still hanging around the Gilbert kid, huh? I guess you forgot the fact that his family your mother."
"Okay, first of all, the person responsible is dead," Anna pointed out. "And second, LEAVE MY MOTHER OUT OF THIS!"
"Whoa, is everything okay?" Jeremy asked.
"Ask your ancestors."
"Stay behind me." She whispered to Jeremy. She turned back to Fredrick. "What are you even doing here?"
"Well, it's a Founder's celebration. And we have got some unfinished business with the founding families." Fredrick told her. Some of the other tomb vampires showed up.
"They're from the tomb, aren't they?" Jeremy asked. Anna nodded to him, but didn't take her eyes off Fredrick.
Just then, she heard the crowd screaming. Jeremy turned around and saw that one of the crew members working the festival was hanging on a tree, dead. Anna glared at Fredrick and his men. She threw them back with her ghost powers.
"How did you…" Jeremy asked.
"I don't know." Anna said. "I just got really angry. But we need to get the others to protect the Founding Families. I know Elena's around here, so we better find her." Jeremy nodded. They ran off.
Underground, Damon and Mason were still headed through the tunnels. "Are you sure you know where we're headed down here?" Damon asked him.
"I know about as much as you do." Mason told him. "But I know there's a pathway down here somewhere." They stopped as they came to a large section of tunnels.
"Which direction?"
"I don't know. Flip a coin." Mason said.
"Shouldn't you know you're way around here?" Damon asked.
"I've never even been in these tunnels before." Mason pointed out. "I didn't even know they were real until about an hour ago."
"Excuse me for being skeptic." Damon said. Finally, he headed down a tunnel, only to run into a trap. A stake laced in vervain hit him in the middle. Mason looked at him, then headed out of the tunnels. The second he was gone, Rose rushed to Damon's side.
"Are you okay?"
"Nothing I haven't handled before. Think you can pull it out?" Rose grabbed the stake and tried to pull it out, but it only made him scream in pain.
"Sorry!" Rose said, letting go.
"It's okay. Maybe Mason will think of something." Rose sat down on a rock nearby, hoping he was right about Mason.
Back in town, Anna and Jeremy had found Elena and explained everything to her. "Look, they couldn't find the necklace." Elena said. "We can't break the spell without it."
"Well, who else would've known about it?" Jeremy asked. Anna looked at them, worried.
"Anna?" Elena asked. "Do you know something?"
"I'm sorry, guys." Anna said. She pulled something out of her pocket and handed it to Elena. It was her necklace!
"You mean you had it the whole time?" Jeremy asked her.
"How did you not know?" Elena asked him. "I thought you would've known something, I mean, you guys have been acting pretty strange today."
"I honestly never meant for things to go this far." Anna told them. "With all the ghosts around, I thought maybe…"
"You'd be able to find your mother." Jeremy said, understanding. She had been looking for Pearl for nearly a year now.
"It's been so long since I last saw her and I've been searching the Other Side for months without a sign of her." Anna said. She was surprised to find herself crying.
"I guess if it were me, I'd have done the same thing." Elena admitted. "But we need to get this to Bonnie before the tomb vampires cause any more problems."
"Hang on." Jeremy said. "Anna, I really hope you find her. Even if it means this could be the last time we see each other."
"I've considered that, too." Anna said. "If that's the case, I'll really miss you. All of you."
"Anna, are you…" Elena began to ask.
"I didn't mean for anything bad to happen." Anna said. "But breaking the number one rule here was the worst thing I've done."
"What do you mean?" Jeremy asked.
"There are limits between how far ghost-human interaction can go. I don't know spirit guides like me count, but I'm not sure. But the most important rule is that it's forbidden for us to…for us to…" Anna broke off. Elena noticed her blushing, which she didn't even know was possible for them to do.
"You've fallen for him, haven't you?" Elena asked. "That's why you've been so awkward around Jeremy this afternoon." Jeremy turned to Anna, surprised.
"Yeah, it's like the plotline of a really bad novel, but I fell for someone when it's the number one rule that should never be broken." Anna said. "But I know you belong with Bonnie and it feels like I stabbed my friend in the back." She turned around to walk away.
"Hey." Jeremy said, stopping her from moving. "It's okay if you feel this way about me. If things were different, maybe…"
"I know, Jeremy. But you guys have to get that necklace back to Bonnie." Anna said. "I'm going to see if I can find my mom before time runs out."
"Anna!" Elena called. She turned around. "Thank you. For everything."
Back in the tunnel, Rose was still sitting next to Damon when Mason returned. "Took you long enough."
"Sorry. Figured you'd need this." Mason said. He broke the stakes off with a shovel and helped him pull them out.
"I still don't get why you turned to me for help. I killed you." Damon pointed out. "I thought you'd want to take revenge on me."
"You have a lot to learn about the ghost world, man." Mason said. "We're always watching the people we left behind, trying to guide them as best as we can, regretting our stupid mistakes. I already messed up in my life, I refuse to let Tyler mess up his." Damon looked at him, understanding. He wasn't going to let his brother mess up, either.
"Well, let's get going." Rose said. "We're wasting our time just standing here." The three of them headed through the tunnels.
Anna had made her way out of the crowd, then she heard Jeremy call her. "I thought you were on your way to Bonnie's."
"I am. I just had to know if you were going to be okay." He told her.
"I should be." Anna said. "Whatever happens, promise you won't forget about me."
"I could never forget you, Anna." Jeremy told her. She smiled, then continued to walk away.
Underground, Mason, Rose, and Damon were still walking through the tunnels. They headed into one tunnel, except Damon couldn't enter. "You have got to be kidding me!" The ghosts turned back.
"What's wrong?" Rose asked.
"I can't get through. It's as though I have to be invited in." Damon told them.
"We'll let you know if we find anything in here." Mason told him. The ghosts started looking around the cave they were in.
Jeremy meet up with Bonnie and gave her the necklace. She took it and threw it into the fire. She started casting the spell to put things back to normal. Sheila came up to her side and helped her cast the spell.
"Find anything?" Damon called.
"Yeah, but I'm not sure what it is." Rose said.
"I think we need to figure out…" Mason paused. He could feel a shift on the Other Side. Rose could feel it, too. Suddenly, she was standing next to Damon.
"What happened?"
"I don't know." Rose said. "But I think we did find something in there." They looked up. Mason was gone.
"Where'd he go?" She shrugged, indicating she about just as much idea as he did.
In the street, Anna was walking around when she saw a familiar figure. "Mama?" Pearl looked up.
"Annabelle?" Anna ran into her mother's arms. She started to feel warm. She wondered if this was going to be it for her. Her mother looked at her. "Something's changed." She realized. "You're still bound to them."
Suddenly, the wind changed and she found herself on the Other Side with her mother. "How?" She asked. "I found you."
"It's rare, but not unheard of, where spirits with a very strong connection to the living don't disappear after their unfinished business is complete." Pearl explained.
"So, what happens now?" Anna asked her.
"You keep helping them. This time, I'll be right by your side helping." Anna smiled.
In the house, the necklace had disappeared. "Keep being strong, Bonnie." Sheila told her. "I'm proud of you." She disappeared from sight.
Back in the caves, Rose was still sitting with Damon. Even with the veil still up, she had chosen to stay with him. She knew she'd have to head back soon though. Alaric showed up then.
"You're here. It's about time." Damon said.
"Didn't have anyone else to call?" Alaric asked.
"No, actually, I don't. 'Cause I need a non-vampire to get in the cave," Damon explained. "The ghosts got booted out when that spell was cast, and other than Elena and Rose, you're pretty much the only one I trust."
"Well, you have a crappy way of showing that." Alaric said.
"Look, if Mason Lockwood can get over the fact that I killed him, can't you cut me a little slack, Ric?"
"I shouldn't have to get over it. I was your friend, Damon. You shouldn't have done it in the first place."
"That's what I said." Rose pointed out, even though she knew Ric couldn't hear him.
"Sometimes... I do things I don't have to do." Damon said. They looked at each other. Alaric headed into the cave.
At the house, Bonnie was looking at the fire. "You okay?" Jeremy asked her.
"I will be."
"I'm sorry about spending so much time around Anna." He told her. "I know how hard it must be for you."
"Well, it was bound to come up at some point." Bonnie said. "But I shouldn't have been so jealous. I know she means well."
"I don't even know if she's still around."
"You should probably get going. I'll call you tomorrow." Bonnie told him. Jeremy left. Then, she heard something and turned back to the fireplace. Elena's necklace, the one she had destroyed, was back and it was undamaged. "How…"
"I guess it isn't over yet." She heard a voice say. She turned and looked at Anna in surprise.
