Abraham sighed contently, as he finished making his fifth sale today. People had been coming in and out of the store all day, which was unusual. The shop had been busy before, but never this busy. His thoughts had been consumed with antiques and the people who loved them, that he didn't have time to worry about Henry.
Ever since learning about his Father's immortality, Abe had worried about him. The anxiety let up as the years came and went, but it was still there, sitting in the back of his mind. No one else had to bear the burden he did, and it was difficult - especially in his teenage years - not having anyone to talk to about it. Granted, he could talk to his Mom and Dad, but it just wasn't the same. Now, as he stood staring at his shop, the worry he felt as a sixteen year old boy resurfaced.
"Relax, Abraham," He said to himself. "Henry is fine."
Just to be safe, he made sure he was close to the phone, in case one of Henry's famous "can you come pick me up" calls arrived.
Jo had begun to relax slightly once Henry finished examining her. There was something about knowing she was going to be okay, especially by his diagnosis, that gave her comfort. Technically, they still weren't safe from the killer, but Henry being with her made dealing with her anxiety easier. Unfortunately, the peace was short lived.
Jo saw the killer before Henry did, as he had his back to the door. When he lifted his arm and pointed the gun at her head, she quickly said his name. She wished she could see Henry's eyes, because that would give her an idea of what he thought. Was he nervous? Was he anxious?
"Congratulations, Doctor Morgan. You get to watch Jo die."
The words were quick, with a hint of angry annoyance to them. It was obvious Henry's rescue mission had compromised the killer's plan, but that didn't stop him from pressing forward. Granted, his plans had changed, but Jo's death was still his main priority.
"You'll have to kill me first," Henry said, his tone firm and unwavering.
"No," She whispered, reaching for him but never touching him.
He turned slightly to look at her before returning his attention to the killer. "Michael, is it really worth it?"
Michael's eyes widened slightly at his name, before returning to normal. "Ah, so you've found me out. Well, that is going to make things tricky for me. Now, I'm going to have to kill the both of you." He paused for a moment, smirking. "What did you think, Henry? Your heroics would save your precious Jo? I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you are going to die."
"Fine."
Jo's eyes widened at Henry's response. Did he seriously just say 'fine'? There was nothing fine about this situation. She tried to speak her protest to him, but her voice caught in her throat. Anxiety began to build in her chest, and it took all her willpower to breathe evenly.
"Do you mind giving us a minute? Before you begin?" Henry said.
Michael's hesitated slightly, but then shrugged. "What's five minutes?" And with that, he turned around and shut the door, locking them inside.
"Henry, what do you think you're doing?" Jo asked, finding her voice.
He turned to look at her. "Do you remember what I asked you? Right before I asked you to slam your car into the barrier?"
She nodded. "Do you trust me?"
"I'm going to ask you again. Do you trust me? And don't just say yes; really think about your answer."
Jo smiled slightly at his urgency. "Henry, my answer is still yes."
He waited a few moments, before responding. "Then don't try to stop me."
The minutes after that happened more quickly than Jo could have imagined. It was like she was standing outside, watching everything in the room unfold. Henry hollered for Michael to
come. Within seconds of his return, he rushed at the man and shots were fired. Her eyes were trained on Henry's body, as both he and the killer collapsed to the ground. She wasn't certain who was shot, until she saw the blood. Three shots; one bullet missed, while two hit their targets. If she had to guess, both men were dead.
"Henry!" She yelled finally, rushing over to him.
Blood was pouring from his wound, and Jo knew a major artery was hit. Carefully, she pulled his head into her lap, and put as much pressure on his chest as possible. Tears began to mix with the blood on her hands, and it took all her resolve to stay focused on keeping Henry alive.
"Jo," He said faintly, looking up at her tear stained face.
"No, no, no, no. You're not leaving me, Henry. I won't let you."
He laughed, followed by a few good coughs. "You're...right; I'm not leaving you."
"Good."
"But I am going to die."
Jo shook her head. "No."
Much to her surprise, his voice was strong, as if nothing was wrong. "You said you trusted me."
She nodded. "I do; I do trust you."
"Then you need to let me die."
"But..." Her voice stopped as a sob erupted from her throat. She couldn't just let Henry die, even if it wasn't really her decision.
"There isn't much...time," Henry said, sighing. "I...I need you to promise you won't stop trusting me." He paused a moment, trying to catch his breath. "Promise me."
"I promise," Jo said quickly. "I absolutely promise."
And with that, Henry closed his eyes and disappeared.
Author's Note:
Well, there it is folks. Henry sacrificed himself for Jo, despite it meaning she learned his secret. I'm really happy with how the big reveal turned out (or, at least, the beginning of the big reveal; he does have to explain, after all), and I can't wait to read your reactions. The next chapter should be posted soon! Love you guys!
