Hey guys! Sorry for the late update. Hopefully I will have the next chapter up by the end of the week. So here is Chapter 34, Enjoy reading
The car sped through the busy street, maneuvering between the cars. My thoughts were in a mess. Was tonight really the night that Alice saw in her dream? Will we make it back in time to help with the fight? Is there a way we can prevent it from happening? Can we save Alice? A million things ran through my mind at the same time. I couldn't focus, I was starting to panic. My chest grew tight, my breathing was shallow and my head started spinning. I knew I couldn't freak out. I knew I had to focus and try and come up with a plan. I needed to be brave and fight this or I could lose one of my best friends. I started taking deep, calming breaths to try and relax and focus my thoughts. I looked to my left, where Edward was seated next to me in the speeding car. He looked extremely tense. His hands were balled into fists, with the skin pulled so tight it looked as if it could rip any moment. His lips were pressed into a thin line and his hair looked wild from how much he pulled on it.
"Edward? Are you ok?" I asked worriedly. I needed him to be alright because I couldn't do this without him.
"No, Bella, I'm not ok. How did none of us notice them planning this!? I thought we had more time to prepare! My sister and best friends are back in the university and I can be there to protect them. They don't even know that Lizzie is behind this." Edward said frustrated.
"We will make it back in time to help them Edward. We have to make it back in time to save Alice." I said in a broken voice.
"We will make back in time! We have a private jet waiting for us. We will be back home as soon as physically possible. We won't let Alice die!" Edward said determinedly. We went back to watching the city pass by as the car continued to speed towards our destination.
I felt the tears start to break through. I couldn't wrap my head around the possibility of one of my friends getting hurt. Oh god, what if something happened to Rosalie? I wasn't sure that Edward or his parents could deal with losing another daughter. I know they technically didn't lose Lizzie as she is still alive, but I had a feeling they weren't going to see it that way. This trip was a terrible idea and it was my idea. I wanted to come to Forks to get my mother's grimoires and I didn't even get them in the end. If we never went on the trip, then we would have been back at the university and would've been able to stop the party from happening and we could've gotten the students out of the university. As I kept thinking about the trip, I suddenly remembered the book Edward retrieved from my Nana's room.
"Edward, we forgot the book," I said in a soft panicked voice. If that book got into the wrong hands it could possibly have very detrimental effect for the witches.
"Don't worry about it Bella. I put the book in the safe last night. I thought it would be safer in the safe then just lying around the apartment. We can come back to Seattle when things settle down to get it." Edward said as the car pulled up to a small runway with a fancy jet waiting for us. I had thought we were going back to the main airport and catching a commercial flight, but I guess this is faster.
When the car came to a full stop, both Edward and I jumped out of the car and ran to the jet. The jet was beautifully decorated in, expensive cream fabric. It had a warm luxurious feel to it. We quickly took our seats and buckled up and within minutes of boarding the jet took off. As I watched the lights of Seattle disappear with ascending, the reality of what we are running towards settled in. We were running back home to fight a bunch of werewolves that were going to attack out friends and family. We were running back to a tragic event orchestrated by Edward's deranged sister. What are we going to do? Are we just going to run into the university? Will the attack have already started? Will we be too late? Will Alice still be alive?
"Edward, what will happen when we land?" I asked, hoping he could offer up some advice.
"If the attack has already started we fight. We fight as hard and bravely as we can. I refuse to be defeated by a pack of wolves." Edward said determinedly.
"What about Lizzie?" I asked softly. I knew this was a sensitive subject but it is something we need to address and it would be better if we do it now.
"I don't think she will give up without a fight. I don't think there is any other way then to kill her or else she will just come back and cause even more damage." Edward said quietly.
"Is there no other way? I know what she has done and is currently doing is inexcusable but I know how much you love her." I said and placed a hand over his.
"She will always be my sister but I will never forgive her for what she has done. If she can cause so much turmoil and death does she deserve to live and continue to kill and torture innocent people?" Edward said sadly.
"Will you be ok with her death? Will you survive that?" I asked. I knew how much pain and guilt it had caused Edward when he had thought Lizzie had died of cancer.
"She is only my sister by blood not by love anymore. I will be fine." Edward said with finality in his voice.
I left the topic there and decided to focus on my powers. I catalogued my powers, physical fighting skills and few spells I knew. I tried to think of ways in which I could use all of them in a fight that could be useful. Within two hours, we had made it back to Los Angles, where we landed close to the university. I was amazed at how fast we had made it back home as commercial flights take around three and a half hours. There was a car waiting for us at the side of the landing strip. We ran to the car and the driver quickly took off and sped to the university. My heart starting racing and my palms grew sweaty.
"Rosalie had left weapons for us at the entrance of the university. She placed it in a black duffel bag under one of the benches placed under the painting of the university. She left a bow with arrows and a dagger for you." Edward informed me.
"This is real? This really isn't a dream?" I asked as I pinched my thigh hoping I would wake up and all this chaos will go away.
"No love, this is real," Edward said solemnly.
"Does it make me a coward that I wish this was just a bad dream and I will wake up and not have to deal with it?" I asked slightly ashamed of not being brave enough to face what was waiting for us.
"No Bella, it makes you human," Edward assured me. I guess it would be odd for someone to want to go fight against a werewolf army were one of their friends is supposed to die. My heart grew heavy as I thought about Alice. Alice's delicate face flashed through my head. Her big blue eyes filled with happiness and mischief. Her short black hair artfully standing in every direction. I remembered her laugh, the way she always hug me tightly and spoke so happily about shopping. She didn't deserve to get hurt, she didn't deserve to die. With that the in my head, I could feel adrenaline spike through my blood, preparing me for the fight that was about come. I will be brave.
I will be brave for Alice. My friend needs me and I will do everything in my power to save her. Within a few minutes the car pulled up to the main building of the University. This was it. There was no going back. Edward got out of the car before me, and I quickly followed. He was beside my door, holding it open for me, as I got out of the car. He grabbed my hand in his and we ran into the main hallway. We quickly located the right bench and found a large black duffel bag hidden underneath it as per Rosalie's instructions. Within the bag there was a thick metal whip that looked intimidating. Along with the whip was a sword with an intricate design on the handle. It looked heavy, sharp, deadly and powerful.
I assumed those where Edward's weapons of choice. I remembered back to the werewolf attack in the Unknown when Edward used his whip, which was on fire, to kill one of the werewolves. He looked strong and confident with the whip and ridiculously sexy if I do say so myself. Before my thoughts could get carried away with how sexy Edward looks fighting, I looked in the bag for what weapons Rosalie packed for me. Edward had already told me in the car but I was anxious to physically see them. Inside the duffel bag remained a beautiful intricately designed bow with a red silk bag containing arrows. The bow was made from an expensive metal, perhaps titanium, but I wasn't sure. It was a lot more modern than the simple wooden bow I had used last time. Even the bows looked stronger and sharper.
I was a little excited to use it. Was that twisted? I took the bow out of the bag and admired it for a few seconds. I grabbed the dagger Edward had told me about out of the bag. It was similar in design as the dagger we used in the affinity ceremony. Along with the dagger there was a type of garter belt, only it looked less frilly and looked sturdier than the normal garter belt. Edward helped me tie the garter belt thing around my upper thigh. Once it was in place Edward ran his hands up my thigh and slipped the dagger under the belt, keeping it hidden from sight. It took a lot of self-control not to jump Edward right there and then when his hand slipped up my thigh, caressing my skin. Whenever he touched me it felt like all my nerve ending were on fire and it started a craving that would rival the most powerful of addictions. Damn it Bella focus! This is not the time to be thinking about how much you want Edward.
With an enormous amount of effort, I slung the bag, holding the arrows, over my shoulder and firmly gripped the bow in my hand. I watched as Edward attached the whip, which was now rolled up forming a thick metal circle, to his belt. Edward took the sword and slid it between his belt and pants on the other side of his body. The sword rest dangerously at his side, reflecting the amber light coming from the chandelier above us. He looked both mystical and dangerous at that moment and then it hit once again. The fact that we are about to walk into a massacre of our friends and family. We were about to fight against a werewolf army. I could hear my heart thumping away in my ears and adrenaline spiked through my veins. This was it. This was the change to protect my friends and to prove that I can fight and that I will fight for something bigger than me.
This will be a message to Amelia's coven, "Come and get me bitches. I will kill every last one of you." And with that thought I was as ready as I will ever be. Edward took my hand in his and we started walking down the quite empty hallways towards the assembly hall. We didn't pass one student in the hallway yet. We didn't hear one scream yet. There was no blood, no bodies, just empty hallways. The closer we got to the assembly hall, the more we could hear soft music playing. As we walked down the last hallway leading to the entrance hall to the assembly hall there was a group of students walking towards us. They looked to have been having a good time. They all seemed tipsy, some more so than the others. They were laughing and dancing on their way through the hallway.
It just looked like students leaving a good party, being carefree and not like there was an army of werewolves torturing the students. I looked over at Edward, who wore the same confused expression I was. What the fuck was going on? Why are they so happy? Why was there music pumping from the assembly hall? Did we get it wrong? Was the attack not going to happen tonight? We stepped into the foyer that led to the entrance of the assembly hall. There were a few drunken students standing around, laughing and chatting. It all still looked the same, nothing had changed. My face must have been the picture of confusion. What the hell was going on? A few students stared at us odd and I realised that we were both armed. We stood there for a minute or so just taking in the scene in front of us.
We said nothing, we just stared in front of us. I don't think either of us knew what to say at that moment. Rosalie came strutting out of the assembly hall only the way she can. She looked breath taken beautifully. She wore a form fitting white Grecian dress. Her hair was in a braided up-do. She looked like a Greek goddess that should have men at her feet begging for her attention. I quickly glanced down at my red silk dress and felt a pang of jealousy at how much better she looked then me. I ran my hands over my dress, trying to straighten it out, even though, there was no crinkle. Edward must have caught my change in mood as he took my hand and kissed the inside of my wrist.
"You're the most beautiful woman in the room. You always are to me." He whispered sweetly into my ear. I could feel my blush spread across my cheeks and down my chest at his words. I swear one day I will be able to accept a compliment without blushing. Before Edward or I could ask Rose what was going on she engulfed Edward in a hug. He looked shocked for a second before he wrapped his arms around her to return the hug.
"Rose what's going on?" Edward asked as he let go of Rose.
"I don't know. Colton's family planned this big fancy party in memory of his birthday. The assembly hall is full of students, although about half the students have left by now. Someone sneaked vodka and whiskey into the punch bowls and some students got a little to punch happy if you know what I mean. Anyway, there is still about a hundred or so students in there. The party is dying down." She explained.
"Has there been any sign of werewolves?" I whispered so that none of the students watching us could hear.
"No. nothing. Everything has gone down perfectly. Other than drunken students there has been no problems. Maybe we got it wrong, maybe the attack is still coming?" Rose whispered.
"Alice's dream vision was so clear. The attack will happen at a formal event. Tonight made perfect sense. We are unprepared. It just makes sense for it to be tonight." Edward said frustrated as he pulled on his hair.
"Maybe Lizzie didn't make it back in time? Perhaps she is still in Forks or Seattle?" I said trying to make sense of the situation.
"Hold on, what the hell do you mean by maybe Lizzie isn't here? My sister is dead! What are you talking about?" Rose hissed and I looked at Edward apologetically for spilling the secret before he had time to talk to Rose about it.
"What Bella is trying to say is that Lizzie is still alive and she is behind all of this," Edward said simply.
"But how? Are you sure?" Rose stumbled as tears started to build in her eyes.
"She attacked Bella and I in Forks. We don't know why she is doing any of this," Edward said tenderly.
"I don't understand," Rose said in a broken voice as tears ran down her face. Before Edward and I could tell her that we were still just as confused as she was right now, Emmett came and wrapped his arm around her.
"What's going on?" Emmett asked as he took in Rose's tear stained face.
"Lizzie is behind all the attacks on the university," I explained simply.
"Oh," Emmett said as he tightened his arms around Rose. Rose curled into Emmett's side and I could faintly hear her repeating "She's m…my sister, how could she do this?" I felt so sorry for her. I knew first-hand how difficult it is to accept the fact that a family member can do something so terrible.
"So what do we do know?" Emmett asked.
"It doesn't look like tonight is the night of the attack so perhaps we should just call it a night and get some sleep," Rose said quietly as she wiped away her tears.
"You're right. I don't think anything will happen tonight. It's already past eleven and there hasn't been a sign of any trouble." Edward said.
"Yeah, but just cause it is getting late and nothing has happened doesn't mean nothing will. I don't think Lizzie is working on a schedule. Maybe we should stay and enjoy what is left of the party just in case something happens." I argued.
"You're right Bella. It's better to be safe than sorry. I know tonight was supposed to be our magical date night but will you be willing to go to a party with me?" Edward asked charmingly. I stood on my tippy toes and gave him a passionate kiss. Before the kiss grew deeper Emmett and Rose simultaneously cleared their throats.
"Sorry," I mumbled as I blushed bright red. Edward chuckled and wrapped his arm around my waist.
"Ok let's get back to the party. The two of you might want to leave the weapons at the door. We wouldn't want you freaking everyone out." Emmett said with a chuckle.
"Wait, where are Alice and Jasper?" I asked.
"Oh they're here somewhere. I think they went for a walk." Emmett said.
"Yeah, Jasper wanted to officially ask her out. He broke up with Maria the other day. Alice didn't want to stay away from the party so they would probably be back soon," Rose said. Well, that's typical of Alice. I was proud of her. There are very few people that would not run away from the party where they saw themselves die.
"Ok then. Let's go party," I said happily as I took Edward's hand and walked to the entrance. Emmett and Rose went to get something to drink as Edward and I took off the weapons and left them at the side of a chair near the entrance. I kept the dagger hidden under my dress on, mainly because it would have been so weird to take it off in front of all the students. Edward grabbed my waist and twirled me onto the dancefloor. I giggled and leaned my head on Edward's chest as he moved us around the dancefloor.
"I'm sorry our date got ruined," Edward said softly.
"It's ok. We'll find a way to make up for it. It was a lovely idea though," I said sweetly. The date Edward had planned was perfect. I really wished that we could've finished it. Edward spun me around the dancefloor and I realised that any type of date would be perfect as long as it is with him. As we danced carelessly to the soft music and I couldn't help but notice how dark and misty it was outside. There was no sign of the moon as the thick cloud hid it.
"So what do you think happened?" I asked.
"I don't know. I honestly thought tonight was the night. Everything looks like it did in Alice's dream. The decorations and the attire all look familiar," Edward said seriously. There was a v between his eyes as he concentrated. I knew his mind was going crazy trying to figure things out. My eyes drifted back to the large windows. It was still very cloudy, but it seemed like the moon was starting to shine through and then it hit me.
"Werewolves only turn at the full moon right?" I asked Edward as we danced.
"Yes, that's why Amelia cursed the Unknown to be an eternal night with a full moon so that the werewolves never return to their human form," Edward explained.
"Look outside. The moon is covered with clouds. It would be impossible for a werewolf to turn. Maybe that's why there hasn't been an attack." I said.
"That makes sense. The moon needs to be full and at its apex for it to allow a werewolf to turn. What I don't understand is how she will get them across the Unknown and into the university." Edward said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well, the werewolves in the Unknown are already in their werewolf form so I don't understand how Lizzie is going to get them to cross over. Even if she waits till the moon is in the right position there is no way she can communicate that to the werewolves. Werewolves can't communicate with people or any other species apart from other werewolves while in their werewolf form," Edward explained.
"So she will need a signal? Something that will let them know it's time to attack?" I asked.
"Yes, exactly. She needs a signal that would notify them that it's time. They only way she can send a signal from here to the Unknown would be by getting another werewolf to notify them," Edward said.
"So if she had a werewolf in the university then she would be able to send a signal to the other werewolves in the Unknown?" I asked.
"Yeah but I don't know where she would find a werewolf," Edward mused.
"Maybe she created one?" I wondered.
"I don't see how she would be able to create one. Amelia created the curse but the only way to become a werewolf is by being bitten. Most people who do get bitten by a werewolf don't survive the first transitioning." Edward explained.
"What do you mean by transition? Like the first time they turn into a werewolf?" I asked as Edward twirled me to the beat of the music. I was so lost in the conversation that I had forgotten that we were still dancing.
"Yes, the first transition into a werewolf is tremendously painful. It starts with a very high fever, you go very pale, and then you start shaking uncontrollably. You're in and out of consciousness and you can't move properly on your own. After a while, your bones start breaking and your heart goes crazy. It keeps going like that until most of you bones are broken and then the transformation begins. Most people die of a heart attack due to the pain and the increase in heart rate," Edward explained. The signs sounded familiar like I have seen them before. Well, the first part, not the breaking bones part. I glanced out the window and saw the moon was completely visible now just like it always is in the Unknown. It hit me like a runaway train. I remembered where I have seen the signs before.
"Liam," I breathed out as memories flooded my mind.
"What are you talking about Bella?" Edward asked.
"Liam. Liam is the signal." I said dazedly.
"Bella, Liam isn't a werewolf, he can't be the signal," Edward said confused.
"He's not a werewolf yet. He will go into transition tonight." I said quietly.
"What do you mean?" Edward asked with a confused expression.
"When we found him in the unknown, he had a large cut on the side of his stomach. I thought it was just a jagged cut, but it could have been a werewolf bite now that I think of it. Liam was visibly shaking and I thought he was just cold and shivering, but when I touched him he was burning up. He could move on his own, Emmett had to help him and he kept going unconscious. I think we managed to get him back to the university, just before the final part of the transition kicked in. Edward, Liam is going to turn into a werewolf tonight. He is the signal for the other werewolves to come," I said panicked. Edward looked at me with wide eyes and I knew I was right. Before we could do or say anything a loud howling ripped through the night.
Well I guess the night has only started for Bella and Edward…
