A\N: So at first I was a little confused at how I wanted to write this chapter as I wasn't sure what I wanted to do about Violet's surgery. Then I realized Matt and Gabby wouldn' know what to do either and so just went with it. Hope you like it. Thanks as always to my wonderful beta reader who edited this chapter for me.

Chapter 14
"She could die Matt," Gabby had carefully studied the list of negative outcomes of the brain surgery Violet could have. "Do we want to take that risk?" They were in an empty waiting room and were determined not to leave until they had reached a decision.
"Gabby you're reading to much into this. There's a very low chance that could happen I read the information too."
"I know Matt but…. Just because your brain surgery went okay it doesn't mean that her's will."
"Gabby I know that!" He raised his voice, "I know how risky it is!" He ran his hands over his face, "I know that."
"Then what are we going to do? Dying is a low risk you're right but other things like paralysis and brain injures are more likely. Plus she's injured her brain twice now that doubles the changes of anything happening."
Matt didn't know what to do he had never in his life had to make a decision as important as this. He wanted some knowledge that he was doing the right thing, that if she had the surgery she'd be fine but he knew that wasn't possible. "Should we tell her?"
"No! Not until we've made up our minds. She'll say yes you know how much she wants to see again."
"Right," Matt slumped into a chair just as Gabby's mother came in carrying Javier and Rafael.
"Sorry to interrupt, just wanted to let you know that I'm going to run back to the hotel quickly and get some teething rings for the boys. Violet's with a woman, I believe she said her name was Meagan…."
"Yeah Ma, she's a child life specialist."
"Right, well I'll be back. You sure you don't want my advice?"
Gabby took a deep breath and massaged her head, "Mom not now."
Matt looked at his girlfriend and offered a slight apologetic look. He knew bits and pieces on the loving but complicated relationship between Gabby and her mother. From what Gabby had told him she loved her mother but Esmerelda was vocally disappointed in her because she had children when she wasn't married; she has been supportive only because she was in a strong relationship. That though was just the latest drama, it had been going on all her life Matt knew.
"I'll take the boys Esmerelda, I need to spend some time with them right now," He walked towards the older woman and took his son's into his arms and carried them out of the room.
Gabby shook her head and mumbled under her breath, "Matt," She looked everywhere else but her mother.
"Gabriela…"
"Mom; I appreciate your help alright? I know you love Javier and Rafael and you have no idea how grateful Matt and I are about you being so nice to Violet but I just…I need support right now."
"Gabriela I know I may not have always been supportive of your decisions but when have I ever not supported you despite my reservations?"
She was right. "Mom I know what you're going to say."
"Oh do you? Well then Gabriela tell me."
"You're going to tell me that we shouldn't let Violet have the operation because if the accident made her blind then God must have a reason for it. And I know Mom I know I want to believe that I really do but so much has happened to her I just I don't know if right now I believe anymore. I'm sorry."
"Gabriela look at me. You think there have been times that I haven't question my faith?"
She hadn't. She'd always thought that even though her father and brother had been injured on the job and her grandfather died she had never lost faith. "You did?"
"Yes my dear I have. You remember when you were fifteen and your grandfather died."
"Yeah," How could she forget? It was in the middle of January and a major snowstorm had caused all airports to shut down for three days. They hadn't made het grandfather's funeral. She had never seen her mother so sad.
"I wondered if there really was a God because if there was one why would that happen? Why would he want me to stay? I never got an answer. I think though whether we believe or not sometimes we just need to have faith we need to believe even when its hard; I'm not going to tell you what you and Matt should do Gabby. I just want you to know how proud I am of you for doing all of this. Raising Violet and the boys and working; I've ever been so proud of you."
That did it Gabriela stood and walked towards her mother and collapsed into her arms and sobbed, "I don't know what to do."
"Ssh, you'll figure it out," Esmerelda comforted her.
Matt returned into the room shortly after both Javier and Rafael sucking on popsicles.
"Either your smart or insane I'm not sure," Gabby told him.
"I know you don't like think having lots of sugar treats but I figured your Mom's trip to thee hotel would be easier if they weren't so cranky."
Gabby looked at her mother for help, "Matt popsicles really?"
"Hey it works," He smiled.
"Maybe Matt should keep them tonight," Esmeralda commented as she took her grandsons and walked out of the room.
"Yeah I think you should," Gabby looked at him, "If they're going to be hyper you deal with them."
"Fine," He agreed, "Now we really need to talk about Violet's surgery. Remember they need to know by tomorrow morning."
"I know, I know…" She began pacing the length of the room, "I want her to be happy but I know there are risks and either way she's never going to have her full sight back. Best the operation will be able to do is allow her to see with strong prescription glasses but she'll still be prone to migraines, and have trouble reading for long periods of time."
"I want her to have every opportunity she can have. I just want to make sure the decision we make will be the right one."
"Matt., whatever happens we'll make sure she has all the support and help she needs. I know they're programs and accommodations that can be made both at school and at home for children that are blind."
He nodded, knowing she knew what she was talking about; still he wished he knew what to do. "I really don't know."
"This parenthood thing is never easy," She sat down beside him, "I'm just as split; I want what's best for her and if there's a chance that maybe she might be able to see again…. I don't know these doctors' do surgery's everyday and it helps. If it only allows her to see with glasses that'll still open so many doors for her. I mean just being able to read… I know I love reading and did when I was her age as well. I want that for her."
"Then I think we've made a decision. She's going to have the surgery."
Leslie walked downstairs and was surprised to see Kelly standing on the bottom step with a measuring tape, "What're you doing?"
"This apartment is a death trap for babies," He explained, "I don't have to tell you why we keep Javier and Rafael to a contained area when they're here. It'll be harder to do that when our baby comes so I just want to be prepared so if we have to move we can."
"We'll just have to get a baby gate when the baby can crawl. We have lots of time for that. Can we focous on important things?"
"Like?"
"Like getting the nursery set up."
"Oh yeah," He turned his head to look at the half completed nursery, "Matt and I were working on it and then…."
"Yeah, well since they baby is due in four months and we need that almost right away I think that's the most important thing.'
"Good point," He stepped aside to let her pass and then followed her into the room, "I really wish you'd let me take this room so the nursery can be upstairs. There's still time to change it."
"No." She shook her head, "The baby can sleep in my room for a bit but I like having a room down here for naps and it'll be easier for both of us."
"Yeah but when the baby gets older do you really want it on a separate floor?"
"If it becomes an issue we can deal with it then," She pated his cheek as she turned and walked away.
"Hey. Hey," He jogged after her, "I'll make breakfast. What do you want?"
She turned to face him "The last time you made me something I want you lectured me on my eating habits. Is it my fault I wanted pickled pancakes?"
He tried to hold in a disgusted face at the memory of the previous week, "Oh come on Leslie! I promise I won't make any comments."
She eyed him, "You promise?"
"Hey if I do you can tell me what we're having."
"Deal. I still can't believe you wanted it to be a surprise though, not that I mind the nursery being painted green I'm just saying you of all people I thought would want to know."
"I think I know."
"How?"
"I've been asking you questions and based on your answers I think we're having a baby boy."
She tried to hide her excitement on but failed to, "Kelly Severide I think this was your intent all along?"
"Come on Shay! You can't keep a secret I'm surprised you kept it for two weeks!"
She glared at him, "You put me through all of that so you could get a laugh?"
He knew she was mad in an instant, "Okay, okay would it help if I apologized."
"No."
"Okay so what can I do to make it up to you?"
"Go and get supplies for the nursery."
"Go shopping?" He groaned, not something he wanted to do on his day off.
"Yes."
He knew how to get to her, "Okay but if you don't' come how'll you know I won't by the wrong things."
"Sorry Kelly you helped Matt with Javier and Rafael's nursery so you know what to do. Besides I don't feel like going out today but I know we need some things."
He groaned, he had been planning on spending the entire day at home but he knew there was no way out of this, when Shay wanted something she was determined to make sure she got it, "Okay, okay," He gave in. "I'll go shopping."
"Diego that's dangerous," Eva watched as her younger brother put water in the microwave, "Do you want the house to blow up?"
"I just want to see what happens."
"Go look it up!" She opened up the microwave and took the water out.
"Give that back Eva!" He reached for it, "You're not the boss of me!"
"Mom's sleeping and the twins are sleeping and Dad's at work; so yeah I am in charge!"
Diego thought of arguing more but decided that probably wasn't the best idea. He growled at her and walked away.
"Diego," Eva had her chemistry textbook in her hand when Diego turned to face her, "You're pretty good at science, how about you read this, I think you'll understand some of it."
She thought he was smart? Diego had never known for sure if Eva actually liked him or if she only faked it to please their parents. He thought maybe there was a chance she really liked him and smiled as he took the textbook, "What to do one of the experiments I got for Christmas?"
"Sure. How about the lemon timer one?"
"Oh cool," Diego nodded and followed her down into the basement and retrieved the kit she was talking about.
An hour later Laura came into the kitchen carrying Isobel and Nevaeh and was pleased to see Eva and Diego laughing as they tried to balance books on their heads.
"Looks like you to are having fun," Laura put the girls into high-chairs, "I'm glad."
"We're seeing how long we can balance books," Eva briefly explained as she started the timer and Diego stood on one leg while balancing two textbooks on his head.
"Gla!" Isobel let out a short laugh as she watched her brother.
Diego turned to look at his sister and the turn of his head caused the books to smash to the ground, which made Isobel laugh even more.
"She think's I'm funny," Diego smiled.
"Looks like it," Laura replied, "You know that's the first time she's laughed. That's a milestone."
Diego didn't really understand what his mother was saying he was just glad he finally found something he could do with his sisters. They were smiling more and now laughing and Diego enjoyed playing with them more and more as well.
As Diego picked up the books Isobel watched him and looked at him, "You want me to do something else?" Diego asked and Isobel answered with a toothless grin. "Mom can I take Isobel into the living room?"
Laura looked up from the cookbook she was flipping through and was about to answer when the phone rang.
"I'll get it!" Eva took the few steps to the home line, "Dawson residence, Eva speaking."
"Hi Eva."
"Hi Aunt Gabby, how's Violet doing?"
"Better each day, she's going to come home in the day after tomorrow. Can I talk to your parents?"
"Dad's at work, Mom's here though."
"That's fine."
"Aunt Gabby you can tell me if it's something bad. I want to know."
"Eva…" Gabby wasn't in the mood to argue with her niece, "Can I talk to your mother?"
Eva sighed and handed the phone over. Isobel was still looking at Diego and Eva said, "Lets take them into the living room and give them toys."
"Okay," Diego took Isobel out of the high-chair and Eva got Nevaeh." They got out the bumbo chairs and put their sisters in them. Then they gave them some toys.
"Isobel look at this," Diego balanced one on foot and made a funny face.
"Da! Da!" Isobel laughed.
"Da? She's thinks I'm Dad?" Diego looked at Eva for clarification.
"I don't know. How would I know?"
"You know more about babies then I do."
"Well I don't know that," She lifted Nevaeh onto her lap and dangled play keys in front of her. "Go ask Mom; or go look it up."
"You sound like my teachers 'go look it up' Diego mocked.
"Well its true," Eva sighed, then looking at her sister she sighed, "Brothers don't worry you'll learn to live with him."
"Eva, Diego," Laura walked into the room, a serious expression on her face, "Aunt Gabby wanted me to tell you that Violet is going to be transported back to Chicago but it seems like her blindness is causes by swelling in her brain; they're going to try and see if brain surgery will help her see again."
Diego's eyes widened and he felt tears building up, "Brain…. Brain surgery?"
"She'll have the best doctor's working on her," Laura promised them.
"But…. We should see her right? Annabelle should come too." Despite the age difference Diego had become really good friends with Violet and her friend Annabelle. He hated seeing his 'cousin' in so much pain and he wished he could do more to help, "Mom," His fists began to clench, "What can we do?"
"We can support her and Aunt Gabby and Uncle Matt as best we can."
"No, I want to do more," Diego stated, "What would really help her? I'm going to think of something." He said and he walked out of the room.
"Mom," Eva whipped tears away from her eyes, "Will Violet die?"
Laura knew what the answer was but she didn't know what she should tell her thirteen year old daughter, "Okay Eva you want to be treated more grown-up? I'll tell you there are risks to her surgery but your Aunt and Uncle feel that Violet being able to see again out way the risks; and on the list death is on the very small percentile"
"Okay," Eva nodded, "We'll see her before the surgery right?"
"Yes."
"Good."
