Chapter 15

He had cleared it with his parents first and then hid aunt and uncle; now Diego had to put his plan into action. He walked up to Violet's classroom before school started and was happy to see that her teacher Mrs. Chatwick was sitting at her desk. "Miss?" He knocked on the door.

Mrs. Chatwick looked up from her work and at Diego, "Yes?"

"My names Diego Dawson Miss. I'm Violet Casey's cousin. I was wondering if I could ask you something?" He nervously walked into the room.

"Yes, how is she doing?" She asked, "All the students have been asking about her."

"She came home yesterday and has surgery tomorrow afternoon. I was thinking she'd like to hear from the class," He reached into his pocket and reached for an envelope he was supposed to deliever to her from his aunt and uncle.

"Yes I'm sure we can make a card," She reached for the envelope and opened it scanning it her face fell and she said, "I apologize a card would be inappropriate."

"Miss I was thinking of maybe an audio card. With her friends saying how much they miss her. She has an IPad and it can be loaded onto it and be surprise."

"Oh that's a wonderful idea!" She smiled, "I'm sure the class will love to do that!"

"I have her IPad," He rook off his backpack and reached into it and handed it over, "We can put it on here, she can't watch the video but the video mode is good."

"Of course," She smiled, "Well I'll talk to your teacher and see if we can pull you out of class to come down here and help us out," She reached for a pen and piece of paper and handed the IPad back to him. "What's your teachers name?"

"Ms. Hannah, 3C."

"Ah I know her; I'm sure it won't be a problem. Why don't you go to class right now and ask her to give me a call on the intercom phone?"

"Okay," He turned and walked out of the classroom feeling proud as his plan was now going to be really happening.

"Violet," Matt took her hand, "Auntie Gabby and I have something important to tell you. We've decided that you're going to have surgery to try and get you to see again."

"I'll be able to see again?" She asked excitedly.

"Well there's a possibility you will be," Matt told her, "But Auntie Gabby and I will stay with you until we can't anymore and then we'll be waiting for you. If the surgery works it'll take some time for you to see."

"So I won't see?" She asked, as she was clearly confused.

"Hi Violet my names Dr. Ian McMillian; I'm going to be the one operating on you. Can I tell you something?"

"Uh-huh," She nodded slowly.

"We think there's a block in the back of your eye that is stopping your brain for letting you see. If we remove that block then the path came be clear. Now it may not work all right? But we don't want you to worry because your Aunt and Uncle are going to stay with you until we have to put you to sleep."

"Put me to sleep?" She began to panic, "With what?"

"It's just so you won't fee any pain sweetheart," He promised, "And it's only for the surgery. Now we can let you listen to a story or music while we put you to sleep. We can see what you have on your IPad and then pick one."

"My cousin has my IPad today," She frowned, "He said he needs it for awhile. I think he's a jerk."

"Now, now Violet, we don't talk like that. Diego will bring your IPad back as soon as he's finished using if for school.

She huffed in annoyance, "I didn't even get to see him."

This was true, she had slept the entire plane ride home; when Antonio and Laura had stopped by for a short visit after the girls check-up they had taken the IPad she had still been asleep.

"They'll come a visit tonight," Gabby promised her and she seemed to be happier. "Now do you have any questions about your surgery?"

"What if it doesn't work?"

"If it doesn't work sweetheart then we're going to do everything we can to help you see again. I promise you you'll have every opportunity you can alright?"

"Can we still be a family?" She asked hopefully, "Will you still adopt me?"

"Of course we will Violet," Matt didn't even need to think about the answer, "Just as soon as you're all better if you want."

"Yes!" She nodded and reached her arms out, "Hug please." Both Matt and Gabby hugged her gently but tightly.

"We love you sweetie," Gabby kissed the side of her head.

"Eva can you get the door?" Laura called out to her oldest daughter as she put Isobel in her car seat.

Finishing doing up her winter coat Eva nodded and looked through the blinds and opened the door, "Hi Annabelle," She saw her cousin's best friend standing on the doorstep with her grandmother, "Come in. Hi Ms. Camden," Eva said to the older woman who offered her a smile in return.

"Hello Eva."

"Diego!" Annabelle skipped happily over to her friend, "I'm so excited about Violet's present! It was such a good idea," She told him.

"Thanks," Diego replied with a short answer, as he wasn't sure what to say around Annabelle anymore. "I hope she likes it," He added as she followed him.

"Me too!" She said and then seeing her grandmother's stare she added, "Thank you so much for inviting me Mrs. Dawson."

"Oh it was no problem at all sweetheart. We'll drop her off back at your apartment after we're finished." Laura explained to Susan; "It shouldn't be very late but we'll call you when we're on our way."

"Sounds good," Susan agreed, "Now Annabelle you make sure you listen alright and be careful around Violet."

"Yes Grandma," She promised.

"Good, now come give me a hug."

Annabelle went to hug her grandmother, the only family she really had, as her parents had died in a car accident when she was a young baby.

When they arrived to the hospital Laura put the girls into the stroller and watched as Diego and Annabelle walked ahead of her in the parking lot.

"Diego really likes her," Eva pointed out, "He gets all nervous around her?"

"Eva," Laura didn't look at her teenager, "You remember what it was like at that age; I hope you don't plan on using it as a teasing measure. I know you two tease each other but please don't use that."

"Mom he-"

"Eva you're older; you know better and you know your sisters have been waking up a lot lately. I don't want to have to play referee alright?"

"I'm trying," She sighed, "But it's hard."

"I think you're both doing a great job not fighting," She praised, "And I've told your brother that too."

"Di! Di!" Isobel yelled as loud as she could as she saw her older brother walk into the hospital and out of sight, "Di! Di!" She began to sob.

Over the past couple of weeks Isobel had become very much attached to Diego and often said 'Di' whenever he was around. Everyone assumed it was her way of saying Diego.

"We'll be seeing Diego in a few seconds," Laura promised her daughter and they walked into the hospital as well and Isobel squawked with delight as she saw her brother again.

"Di!"

"Hey Issy," Diego retraced his steps and walked to his sister giving her a kiss on the forehead.

"Di! Di!" She squealed happily looking up at him with her brown eyes. "Di!"

"Okay, okay, I'll walk with you," He took her tiny hand in his and gave an over-dramatic huff, which she giggled at. He didn't want it to seem like he enjoyed spending time with his little sisters but he did; he loved them, especially Isobel. He was glad that she seemed to really like him too.

Antonio met them on the Pediatric Pre-Surgical unit and they went towards Violet's hospital room, "It's just us," Antonio knocked on the door and entered.

"Hey," Gabby stood from her chair and walked to her older brother hugging her, "Thanks for coming."

"No problem," He kissed her cheek.

"Hi guys!" Violet said smiling, "Who's here?"

"I am!" Annabelle couldn't contain her excitement at seeing her best friend as she rushed over to her and hugged her.

Violet smiled and hugged her back, "Hi Annabelle!"

"I've missed you," She admitted, "Grandma said you were really sick and that's why you couldn't come home. I wanted to go and se you too!" She added.

"I'm glad you came now!" Violet hugged her again.

"I'm here too Violet," Diego walked up to his cousin and friend, "I have your IPad too Violet and I think there's something you should listen too." He loaded up the video and held it close to her. Suddenly the room filled with the voices of Violet and Annabelle's class.

"HI VIOLET THIS IS MS. CHATWICK'S FIRST GRADE CLASS! WE MISS YOU!"

"I liked to play with Violet at recess. I miss you."

"Feel better Violet."

"Violet was in my kindergarten class last year, she's nice."

"Violet helped me read sometimes, I miss her."

"I love you Violet, you're so nice."

"Feel better Violet and come back to school."

"No one's sitting next to me and Annabelle; it's still your desk."

"Hope you feel better soon."

"This is the Ashley twins, we miss you and love you Violet."

"Come back soon Violet I liked it when you were nice to me."

"Violet's really nice and I like her a lot."

"Hi Violet this is Annabelle. You're my best friend ever and I really miss you.

"Hi Violet, this is Ms. Chatwick as you can see all of us miss you very much and we want you to come back to class. Not all of the children wanted to go on the video but we all miss you very much. Please get better really soon and we wish you a lot of luck on your surgery."

After that the video stopped and Violet looked up at Diego, "You made this for me?"

"Yeah," He nodded, "It was all my idea. Do you like it?"

"Yes!" She pulled him into a hug, "Thank you so much!"

"You're welcome," He smiled, "I'm glad you like it."

"We're glad you're feeling better Violet," Eva added, "I was really worried and I hope the surgery goes well."

"Thanks."

"Le! Le!" Javier bounced and pointed to Violet as he looked at his parents.

"Okay buddy," Matt picked up the eight month old and carried him over to Violet's bed.

"Me! Le!" Rafael waved his arms and began to crawl towards the bed.

"He's crawling," Antonio watched his nephew in amazement, "He's pretty good to."

"Yeah he is, Javier can to he just doesn't like to," Matt admitted, "Rafael's stood a few times holding our hands. He has more motivation I think."

"In other words he's just like both of you," Antonio commented.

Gabby glared at him, "Yeah and how are my beautiful nieces doing?" She looked in the stroller to see the now two month old babies, "Let me see if my boys will let me hold you," She gently picked Nevaeh up and cradled her in her arms, "Hi baby girl," She cooed and carried her over to Mat who was keeping a close eye on the boys who were currently watching the older kids take turns playing with Violet's IPad.

"Hi sweetie," Matt watched her and cooed softly blowing kisses at the smiling baby. In response Nevaeh gurgled and babbled away happily.

"Oh aren't you so adorable," Gabby tickled her stomach.

"Can I hold her?" Matt asked, and Gabby hesitated she missed holding a baby so young and wanted to keep her as long as she could.

"Go and get Isobel," She narrowed her eyes and smiled.

"Uh-oh," Antonio exclaimed, "Gabby you have baby fever. You had that same look when you didn't want to give Eva back when she was born."

"If you're going to tell me you're just as worried…."

"Well now that you mention it," He laughed.

"You're lucky I'm holding your daughter and she's so cute. Yes but we don't like Daddy, he's silly," She cooed to Nevaeh in a teasing voice.

"Cute Gabriela," Antonio rolled his eyes in return, "Very mature."

"Look sweetie, its Isobel, Uncle Matt's holding Isobel," Gabby rocked the baby in her arms as Matt did the same with Isobel. They stayed like that quite contently for six minutes until Javier and Rafael began to cry.

"They're probably getting hungry," Gabby handed Nevaeh to Antonio and went to pick up her twins, "Mommy will feed you. Lets see what we have today," She carried them over to a chair and set them on her lap as she looked into the freezer bag with baby food.

"Ma! Ma!" Both boys happily called as they watched her look for food.

'Aw they're so smart," Eva looked at her cousins, "They're crawling too. Can I try feeding them?"

"Thanks for the offer Eva but I think the first time you should be facing them. If we had high-chairs maybe but we just feed them while they sit on our laps." Gabby explained to her hoping she'd understand.

"Okay Aunt Gabby," Eva nodded and turned around back to where Annabelle and Diego were playing a game on the IPad.

A\N: So Diego organized Violet's class to make her a video she could listen to and it seemed to make her happier and less scared about her surgery. Also, I'm thinking there's only going to be about ten-fifteen more chapters of the story left.

Up Next: Violet's surgery and how all of the characters are worried and wondering about her as they about their day.
