Chapter 16

"Now remember sweetie Auntie Gabby and I will be here when your surgery is all finished," Matt kissed Violet's forehead.

"Uh-huh," She nodded starting to get a little groggy from the sedative she'd been injected with.

"Knock, knock," Kelly appeared at the open doorway.

"Uncle Kelly!" Violet smiled, "Is Auntie Leslie there too?"

"You bet sweetheart," Leslie told her, "We wanted to come and make sure we gave you a hug and a kiss before your surgery."

"Thank you," She smiled up at them, "I'm scared," She told them.

"I know you are," Leslie looked at her, "But just like Auntie Gabby and I these doctor's look after people for a living. They're going to take good care of you."

"Yes," Matt caressed her hair and kissed her forehead, "And after the surgery no matter what the outcome is Auntie Gabby and I are going to adopt you."

"Okay," She nodded and began to yawn.

"Oh and this big Olaf will be waiting to give you a hug when you come out," Kelly held up a big plush Olaf.

"Or even better he can go with you," Gabby told her, "He's new and the doctor's said either one of their stuffies or a new one should be alright.

"Can I have it?" She reached out for it as much as she could; her limbs becoming weak due to the sedative.

"Of course," Kelly handed it over and made sure she was holding onto it before letting go."

"Okay Violet," Dr. McMillian entered the room with a few orderlies, "It's time for your surgery now."

"No!" She shook her head, "I don't want to go! Auntie Gabby! Uncle Matt!" She began to sob.

"You're going to be fine sweetheart," Matt took her hand, "Remember we're going to be here when you wake-up okay?"

She yawned and nodded her head the sedative was really making her tired now. She hugged her Olaf doll tightly.

"We love you sweetie," Gabby kissed her. She couldn't watch though as they took her away and she turned and buried her face in Matt's shirt letting her own tears come out.

"She'll be okay," Matt rubbed her back in soothing circles.

"She might not be," She shook her head and continued to cry. She couldn't stop thinking about all of the things that could go wrong during the surgery.

"I know," Matt kept soothing her; he too knew there could be risks with the surgery and inside he was crying as well but he wanted to be strong for her so he was dead set on not crying.

"Mom," Diego reframed from unbuckling his seatbelt, "Are you sure I have to go to school today?"

"Yes Diego you'd only be sitting in a hospital all day anyways. I'll pick you up after and we can go to the hospital." Laura told her son, "Now get going before you're late."

He sighed and waked out of the back of the van stopping to kiss each of his sister's on the way out the door, "Bye Mom!" He yelled as he ran into the playground.

"Ooh kissing your little sisters," A boy named John laughed, "Do you kiss your Mommy too?"

"Shut up," Diego pushed past him. He'd had problems with John before and he knew that if he was tested he'd start a fight; especially today.

"What's the problem Dawson your little cousin not here to defend you?" He mocked.

Diego spun around and glared at him, "You better watch it!" He scanned the area, no teachers in sight. He could maybe get away with throwing a few punches if he was lucky. John was bigger then he was and he had friends but Diego had inherited his father's natural boxing ability and he knew how to throw punches, and how to do it properly.

"Oh yeah that's right your cousin can't see now. I'm not supposed to make fun of a cripple," He continued, "Does she use a cane?" He howled with laughter.

"STOP IT!" Diego took the bait and he tackled John to the ground and began punching him, "You shut up!" He growled as he punched his mouth determined to give him a fat lip. "Don't say anything about my family!" He continued to punch him.

"THAT'S ENOUGH!" A teacher on guard duty lifted Diego up and off of John "You boys will report to the principal's office immediately."

"But I didn't do anything," John tried to play innocent.

The teacher glared at him, she knew well what he was like; having seen John bully other children many times before, "You'll go to Mr. Gregson."

"Fine," He huffed and followed Diego towards the office; once they were inside he turned to Diego and said, "I'll make sure you get expelled this time!"

Diego wanted to punch him again but something inside of him told him not to. He wasn't sure what it was but there was this voice telling him to be the better person and to not let John get to him. It was hard but he managed to keep his mouth shut until they arrived to the main office.

"We got into a fight," Diego told the secretary at the desk.

"Alright wait here," She stood and walked off to a connecting office, she returned moments later with principal who knew both boys and shook his head, "Alright Mr. Gregson go into the back room and wait there until your parents come," He said.

'Sir I didn't do anything," He lied, "Diego just attacked me." He knew that what he was saying was true Diego did throw the first punch. "He punched me first."

"Just do what you're told," Mr. McMillian told him and with a scowl John left.

"Now Diego," Mr. McMillian looked at Diego, "Why don't we go and have a little talk while we get your parents in here."

"Yes Sir," He nodded his head. He anticipated his mother would be livid and he didn't even want to think about what his father would have to say. He knew that no matter what John said it was no excuse to start a fight.

"Sit down Diego," Mr. McMillian's said he closed the door to his office, "Now I think you need to tell me what happened but first isn't your cousin going to have surgery soon?"

"Yes Sir it's today but my parents wanted me in school," He explained as he lowered his head and sighed. "But I wanted to stay there I really did. Violet's my cousin and I love her."

"I know you do; what you did for her was very kind Diego. You're a very sweet boy I'm not sure why you keep getting into fights all the time."

"My Mom says I have my father's temper."

"I see," He sighed, he could tell that Diego's parents and especially his father was strict. He knew Antonio Dawson was a Detective and Laura owned a bakery. Eva was involved in some cyber bullying when she was in grade seven and he hadn't seen parents so angry at their child then they had been with her. She hadn't even started it that had been another girl she was just passing it along but her parents were angrier then that girl's parents had been. Needless to say he never had any more problems with Eva on anything; especially bullying of any sort.

"Mrs., Dawson's here Sir," A secretary told him as she knocked on the door and walked into his office. Walking out into the main office he wasn't surprised when he saw Lara with a frown on her face as she pushed a stroller back and fourth; he remembered the last time Diego had been in a serious fight she had been pregnant.

"Mrs. Dawson," He walked to shake her hand, "Diego's in my office why don't we have a seat."

"Yes," Laura followed him and she glared at her son as she sat next to him.

"Now Diego," Mr. McMillian sat back down at his desk, "Please tell us what happened."

"He was making fun of Violet," Diego said and he began to cry out of frustration, "I held back but he called her a cripple and I started punching him." He turned to his mother and lost it, "I'm so sorry Mommy. I wanted to be better but he was saying all these things about her! I had to do something."

"You're defiantly your father's son She thought, "Is this the same boy who was saying things the last time?"

"Yes," He nodded his head, "He's in grade five, he's doesn't like me very much."

"No," Laura shook her head, "Well I'm disappointed in you for fighting Diego and you will be punished but I think your intentions of protecting Violet were good. You just need to keep remembering that he wants you to fight if you walk away you do win. You know what he' saying isn't true."

"Yes I know.

"Good now will he be suspended?" She asked Mr. McMillian.

"He'll have an in-school suspension tomorrow. Now Diego I suggest you go back to class. I'll call your teacher and tell her your own your way."

"Yes Sir," Diego stood and walked towards the door.

"De! De!" Isobel waved her arms around in happiness, "De! De!"

"Well your sisters seem to love you very much," Mr. McMillian complimented.

"Yes I love them too," Diego told him.

"Well that's good, now before you go I need to ask you if you could name any of the other students that might of heard what Mr. Gregson said to you."

"Well his friends did and my friend Marcus was near the playground area watching, and some other girls I think, they looked familiar they might be in Violet's class. Oh and Annabelle was with them," He added, "She was with them to I remember she waved when she saw me first walk into the playground."

"Thank you Diego," Mr. McMillian said and he held the door open for him and Laura to walk through.

Gabby knew she needed to eat but her stomach was to unsettled to even think of it. She was sick with worry over Violet and she missed Javier and Rafael more then she usually did when they were apart from her. She guessed Matt was feeling the same as she although he had managed to eat a few bites out of a sandwich before continuing to pace the floor of the waiting room.

It had been almost three hours since Violet had gone into surgery and still they were waiting for any news. They had been expecting this as the doctor's had told them it would be a long operation and a complicated one as well. They were still nervous though and they barely talked to each other, not until Gabby's parents came to bring the boys for a visit.

"Mom, Dad?" Gabriela lifted her head up, "What are you two doing here? We said we'd let you know once we knew anything."

"Gabriela," Her father shook his head, "Violet's are granddaughter we want to be here too."

This caused Gabby to smile; she walked up and pulled her parents into a hug, "You have no idea how happy I am you're both here."

"Mama!" Rafael reached his arms out for her, "Mami!" He cried out.

"Mami?" She questioned, "Since when do you speak Spanish?" She picked up her son, "Have you been taking classes or something?" She blew kisses onto his stomach and he giggled.

"Mami! Mami!"

"Mami!" Javier coped his brother, "Papi!" He looked at Matt and smiled.

"You speaking Spanish to them must be working," Matt commented as he walked over to Gabby's parents and took Javier from her father, "I just hope they speak English too."

"Oh Matt," Gabby rolled her eyes in slight annoyance, "Eva and Diego grew up bilingual, so did Antonio and I. All of us spoke two languages; it's good for them to be bilingual."

"Uh-huh," He didn't seem too convinced, "I trust you though and I know Diego and Eva love speaking both languages. She's taking French to isn't she?"

"Yeah she had a knack for languages that girl," Eduardo commented.

"So Gabriela," Esmeralda took her daughter's hand, "Tell me what your so worried about?"

"Nothing Mom," Gabriela looked away, "It's nothing."

"Gabriela, I'm trying here; I really am. The only way we'll be able to fix our relationship is if you can trust me."

"It's just money and stuff," She shook her head, "Even if the surgery works Violet's going to need lots of therapy and we want to adopt her so that's going to cost money. I feel bad for Javier and Rafael too as they haven't been getting a lot of attention so I want to make their birthday really special and March is going to be Violet's birthday and the anniversary of her mother's death."

"Okay," Esmerelda took a minute to take it all in. "We'll you know your father and I were going to wait to tell you but we want to help with whatever we can. Now please don't take this the wrong way; we're not trying to force you into anything. We know you had both been talking about getting married and we'd me willing to pay for it; we helped pay for Antonio and Laura's and we'd be quite happy to help you out."

Gabby turned towards her mother and smiled, "Thanks Mom, that'd be great. It would really help us out."

"Good," She squeezed her daughter's hand, "Now your father and I will stay as long as you and Matt want us to."

Gabby nodded and watched with a small smile as Javier was standing up on Matt's shoe his arms wrapped tightly around his father's leg.

"Papi!" He giggled, "Dada!"

"He's a great father," Esmeralda lowered her voice, "You know I couldn't ask for a better husband or father of your children."

"I know Mom," She said, "And he's a great father; he loves Javier, Rafael and Violet so much."

"Can we expect anymore children?"

Gabby's eyes widened, "Mom," She turned to look at her a slight bluish on her face, "Maybe."

Esmeralda only slightly smiled, "Go over and give your boys a big hug. I think you all need it."

"Yeah," Gabby nodded and walked over to Rafael and picked him up, "You're just so quiet," She cooed, "You just sit and play with your toys. Are you going to be really smart?"

"Ee" He responded.

"I'm going to take that as a yes," She kissed his cheek, "Mommy and Daddy are so happy Abuela and Abuelo brought you here. We need all the support we can get. Your big sister Violet is in surgery.

"Lee," He repeated, "Lee," He looked around the room pouting when he didn't see Violet, Lee," He began to cry.

"You'll see Violet soon," She hugged her son, "You'll see Violet soon."

"Lee," He sniffled putting his thumb to his mouth and sucking on it. Tears still falling from his brown eyes he laid his head on his mother's shoulder.

"Oh baby," She continued to soothe him, "Do you want your favourite toy?" She walked over to the diaper bag and pulled out a blue blanket that Rafael always slept with.

"Ba," He grabbed the blanket and held it, "Mama," He placed a sloppy kiss to Gabby's cheek and closed his eyes.

"Oh baby you're not usually this tired before your nap," She felt his forehead to see if he had a fever, "You slept well last night. Lets see if you can play with some toys naptime isn't for another few hours. She set him down on the floor and gave him some toys to play with. He just looked up at his mother and blinked his eyes. "Ba?"

"You have your blankie."

"Ba," He waved his arms around and crawled over to the baby bag. Pulling it down onto the floor he looked back at Gabriela.

"Okay, there's something you want in here," She sat down beside him and pulled out the contents of the bag. He instantly grabbed a board book and held it.

"You want Mommy to read you that?" She asked. "Oh it's a Spanish book," She lifted him up and sat on a chair with him in her lap, "It's a book about Spanish words. I think Eva likes reading this to you doesn't she."

"E," He babbled happily as he looked at the book and listened as Gabby read it to him. "Ah! Ah!" He said as she had finished it.

"Again? Okay sweetie."

Meanwhile Javier had taken to crawling away from Matt every time he got near to him.

"Oh I can't wait until you can walk and run," He said sarcastically as he finally managed to scoop up the nine month old, "Daddy needs to change your diaper."

"Nah!" He squirmed to get out of his father's grasp; he always needed to be on the go he hated staying still even getting him to eat was a problem.

"Yes," Matt firmly held onto him as he took the diaper bag and walked out of the waiting room. He figured he could use Violet's room even though it was empty as that was where they had changed Javier and Rafael's diapers before and wrapped the dirty ones in a plastic bag and thrown it in garbage bag out in the hallway or near a washroom so it wouldn't make the hallway smell bad.

"Da," Javier continued to squirm and Matt lay him on the bed and took off his onsie and tried to keep his legs still as he un-did his diaper, "I think you're going to be like Mommy. You always need to be doing something. You can't sit still," He changed the diaper as fast as he could and picked him back up.

Javier frowned up at his father, "Na."

"I'll let you crawl around when we get back to the waiting room," Matt responded, "I don't need you getting lost."

"Gah."

Matt shook his head and smiled in amazement at how many words and syllables Javier and Rafael had been putting together recently. Some of them made sense like calling people by name but sometimes Matt wondered what the sounds meant and a pet of him wished he could somehow know.

"See," Gabriela told Javier as Matt carried Rafael back into he room and set him down on the ground, "Daddy and Javier are back."

"Ja," Rafael crawled over to his brother and smiled.

"Ba," Javier placed a toy car on the ground and pushed it against the floor causing it to move.

"Gla," Rafael caught it and smiled repeating the action his brother had done.

"They're really growing up," Gabby commented to Matt as they watched their son's play together.

"Yeah they are," He agreed.

"Lt. Casey Ms. Dawson," Dr. McMillian walked into the waiting room, "I think we should talk in private. Follow me to my office."
