Chapter 18

Her head feeling like it weighed a tone Violet thought she opened her eyes but all she saw was darkness. Was she dead? She tried to remember anything but all she could remember were bits of information that scared her. She knew she was blind but she didn't know why and she felt scared. "Mommy!" She cried out as she tried to see again. "Mommy!"

Gabby awoke with a startle to see Violet thrashing around violently the machines beeping all around her, she was about to press the nurses button when they came running in and pushed her aside telling her to wait outside.

"What's going on?" She tried to look past them but they shut the door and closed the blinds, that's when she knew it was something bad. She sunk to her knees and began to cry the hallways becoming a blur.

"Ms. Dawson," A nurse approached her sometime later, "Ms. Dawson," She had to repeat herself to get Gabby's attention.

Opening her eyes Gabby stood up, "How is she?" She dreaded the answer.

"She gave us a scare for a second but she appears stable right now. She's awake but a little groggy and asking for you and your fiancée and Javier and Rafael."

"Our sons," She responded, happy that Violet was awake and talking, "Can she see?"

"The doctors are just about to remove the eye bandages."

Gabby hurried into the room, "I'm here sweetie," She took Violet's hand and squeezed it.

"I'm scared Auntie Gabby," She admitted.

"I know sweetie," Gabby tried her best to soothe her.

"Alright Violet," Dr. McMillian spoke calmly, "I'm going to take off the bandages on your eyes but you need to keep them shut for me alright," He instructed a nurse to dim the lights in the room and he removed the bandages.

"Okay." She squeezed Gabby's hand tightly.

"Good girl," He carefully removed the bandage that was covering her eyes and then examined both of them for any swelling, "Alright sweetheart try to open hem now and tell me if you can see anything."

Doing what she was told she opened them up but cried out in pain as her head throbbed and the room spun. "It's all blurry!" She cried.

"You can see?" Gabby practically leapt for joy, "Baby did you say things were blurry?"

"Yeah," She nodded still crying, "Really blurry."

The room let out a collective sigh and Gabby hugged Violet, "Oh sweetie. What does this mean?"

"It means she's a real fighter," Dr. McMillian smiled, "Not only did she have a fifty percent chance of not being able to talk but a ninety percent chance of being bind. It appears though she might be what's called legally blind. I'll get in contact with an optometrist and see if they can come and give her a full examination. She'll most likely need high prescription glasses though."

"That's fine," Gabby, said relieved that Violet was alive and could in fact see. "Violet sweetie I'll be right back I'm just going to go call Uncle Matt."

"Okay," She nodded, "I'm tired can I sleep?"

"Yeah sweetheart," Dr. McMillian told her, "Your body needs lots of rest."

Gabby walked until she was in an areas she could use her cell phone then she called Matt.

"Gabby," He answered on the second ring, "Any news?"

"She's awake she can see. Her sight is blurry but she's going to be fine," She breathed a sigh of relief as she cried happy tears.

"Oh baby that's great," He said also relieved, "I'll be there as soon as the boys wake up. Any news on Diego?"

"No. He's still in surgery. I'm fretting having to tell Violet."

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

"Yeah. She's in the same room just come on in when you get here."

"Will do. Want me to bring anything?"

"No just yourself and the boys."

"Okay Love you."

"Love you too," She hung up dialed another number,

"Hey girl," Leslie Shay picked up on the second ring hoping it was good news.

"Hey," She greeted in return, "How're you feeling?"

"Like hell. I can't wait another six weeks for him to come," She groaned, "Give me some good news."

"Violet's awake and she can see but its blurry, but she can see and her speech is fine."

"Oh that's great!" She exclaimed, "We'll be in to see her tomorrow. How's Diego?"

"No news yet," She rubbed her face. "I don't know Leslie is it wrong I'm so happy. I mean Antonio and Laura are waiting to see if Diego comes out of surgery and here I am happy? I feel like a monster."

"No, no I think its okay. You're allowed to be happy for Violet; she's going to be your daughter.

"I know but Diego's my nephew," She cried and shook her head, "I don't know Leslie."

"Here's what I know, you need some proper sleep. I think you should go home and rest when Matt comes." She knew the two were rotating time spent at the hospital.

"Yeah maybe, I might wait on news about Diego though."

"Okay Gabby," Shay wasn't in the mood to argue with her so she simply said, 'Bye we'll see you later," And hung up.

Detective Dawson, Mrs. Dawson," A doctor fresh out of surgery walked into the waiting room.

"How is he?" Laura rushed up to her.

"The surgery was touch and go at times but we were able to remove all of the bullets and warm him up. He's a very lucky little boy."

Laura turned into Antonio and sobbed; she was so relieved her little boy was alive, "When can we see him?" Antonio asked.

"The nurses are setting him up in a room now, it's a double room but I think you won't mind," She led them down a hallway and then down another hallway where the passed a nurses station and then got to a door.

Antonio walked into the room and was amazed at what he saw, "Gabby, Violet an Diego are roommates?" He looked at his younger sister who was watching nurses make sure Violet was still stable after the move.

"Yeah," She nodded happily, "How's Diego doing?"

"He's lucky."

"He should wake up soon," A nurse said as she checked Diego's vital signs, "He'll be groggy and in major pain though," She motioned to the complete arm cast he was wearing."

"Will he remember anything?"

"I don't know Detective but my advice is don't ask him about it."

"Don't worry he won't," Laura took her husband's hand as they sat down in two chairs next to her bed.

"Diego will love having Violet for a roommate," She kissed her son's forehead and watched as IT people set up a TV and DVD player in between the two beds. As well as a TV the room also had comfy chairs and a small coffee table.

"Violet too," Gabby replied, "I'm so glad Diego's going to be okay," She looked at her nephew who began blinking his eyes open.

"Mommy? Daddy?" He looked at his parents and began to cry, "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"

"Oh no Diego," Laura soothed him, "Don't apologize."

"Daddy!" He sobbed looking at Antonio, "I'm sorry I got shot."

"No, no Diego your mother's right." He tried his best to assure his son everything was all right.

"My arm," He looked at the cast and bit back the urge to cry even more. He was in pain but he knew his father never cried when he was shot.

"Yeah we know I'll go get s nurse to give you some medication," Antonio stood.

"No Daddy it doesn't hurt," He lied.

"Diego," Laura shook her head. She knew what he was doing and she looked at her husband, "You need medication to make you feel better."

"No!" He shook his head, "Daddy!" He reached out to Antonio and sobbed.

Antonio sat next to him on the bed and pulled him into his arms, "Let Mommy get you a nurse to give you some medication. It'll make you feel better getting shot hurts a lot and you need your rest. I'll be here when you wake up."

Diego was in too much pain to reply so once a nurse came and gave him some pills he took them and curled up into his father and began to cry.

"Ssh Diego," Antonio soothed him into a restless sleep; he knew he'd need a lot of counseling and therapy in order to fully recover, that is if he ever did as he had a bad feeling Diego was going to stop being the sweet and caring boy he was before.
