Part 16 of An Inquest series.
Title: In Summary
"I could confidently state that money wasn't a motive. The beneficiary, Lee Adama, never touched a cubit, but put Roslin's entire inheritance into several charitable trusts. Yet it was most important that I disproved all the Adamas of any wrongdoings."
"The sins of the father," the man sitting opposite her suggested as he adjusted his spectacles so he could rub the bridge of his nose in a weary gesture.
She handed him the thick legal tome she'd found in Lampkin's office.
"Sine qua non," he quoted from the dedication on the inside cover. "Without which not?"
"Without a prosecution you wouldn't need a defender," she explained briefly.
"Lampkin began his career at the Public Defenders' Office, working alongside Joseph Adama. Lampkin knew about the alleged links to the Ha'la'tha all along. He also knew I'd find out that by the time Joseph Adama ended his career, he was well-respected and above reproach. His family would be able to sue for defamation if any prosecutor went down that track."
"Lampkin made you investigate Laura's death just to prove the matter couldn't be pursued in court?"
"My evidence shows that Laura Roslin refused treatment to ensure she lived out her life with the man she loved."
Her companion cleared his throat.
"No judge would let the case go before a jury. No one, President Baltar included, would successfully be able to claim criminal negligence. Lampkin used me to clear the Adama family's reputation, as well as any suspicions surrounding Laura Roslin's motives for deceit. Anyone related to, or with ties to, the family will be free to pursue the presidency in the next election."
He held her gaze. His expression was more defeated and disappointed than angry.
She suddenly wanted to reassure him. "Your son will make a fine president, Commander Adama."
