A\N: I know in a previous chapter I said that Leslie's baby was due in July but I'm changing it. It's the beginning of March in the story now and in mid-April it'll be a year since Violet was in the car crash that killed her mother. Also, only nine more chapters plus an epilogue left in this story.

Chapter 19

Five Days Later:

Matt and Gabby on either side of her and holding her hands Violet watched as an eye doctor sat in front of her a eye testing machine between them. "This machine is going to help me determine what kind of glasses you need okay sweetheart?"

"Okay," She nodded.

She finished setting up the machine and said, "I'm going to show you some imagines and I need you to tell me what one is clearer okay?"

"Okay, what if I make a mistake?" She asked worried.

"Just tell me what image you can see and you won't make a mistake."

"Okay," Violet nodded.

"Can you see this picture?" The eye doctor turned the machine to a picture of a farm.

"No," Violet shook her head, "It hurts my eyes.'

She turned the dials and a clearer image appeared, "I can see it! It's a little blurry but I can see it's a farm," She said. She was excited as it was the first time she could see anything this clear since she'd lost her sight two months ago.

"Good, that's great," The eye doctor made some notes and then continued with the procedure. She had Violet look at some shapes with the device and asked her what she saw and took more notes. An hour later she had the information she needed.

"Alright sweetheart are you ready to go and look at some glasses? We have some really pretty ones I think you'll like. We even get to make them especially for you. How does that sound?"

"Cool," She grinned and walked with Mat and Gabby happily to the area where they had the glasses displayed.

"What's here sight like?" Matt asked her eye doctor.

"She only has thirty percent of her vision left," She reported, "She needs very strong prescription glasses to be able to see things blurry. It's like she's seeing shapes and outlines of things, that's what she saw in the picture. Now I'm happy to say with all the tools available now she'll be able to read large print books and regular books with a magnifying glass however only in small time increments. She's going to be severally prone to migraines and headaches also."

Matt listened to everything she said and couldn't believe Violet had lost almost all of her sight, "We'll do whatever we can for her."

"I'll get you come packages of where to get equipment and I'll sit with you and tell you what would be best for her to use."

"Great thanks," Matt smiled appreciatively, "You'll probably better at listening to this Babe," He told Gabby, "I'll go help Violet pick out glasses."

"Okay," Gabby agreed.

"I'm here Violet," Matt told her as he approached, "You want me to tell you what the glasses look like?"

'Uncle Matt its no far I can't see them," Tears escaped from her eyes.

"I know sweetie," He hugged her, "But we're going to do everything we can to help you. You're going to be able to read again and see I promise."

"I want purple glasses," She told him, "Or pink."

"Well we have lots of those," He looked at all the choices for children, he ruled out all of the medal ones right away as he could see them snapping. "Here lets go show Auntie Gabby these ones," He put some glasses on her and took her hand leading her over to where Gabby was speaking with the eye doctor.

Gabby saw the glasses on her and gave Matt a look, they were bright pink but they didn't go at all with the shape of her face. "Oh sweetie Uncle Matt's being silly. Lets get you some nice glasses."

"Let me guess you picked those out Matt," Leslie quipped as she and Kelly entered the room,

"Aunt Leslie!" Violet cheered happily, "Hi!"

"Hi sweetheart," She walked towards her, "Uncle Kelly's here too. We have a check-up with the doctor and went to see you; your Aunt Laura said you were here. I thought you'd like some help pick out cool glasses."

She nodded and reached for her hand, "Auntie Gabby said she's help to."

"Violet you go with Aunt Leslie I want to see about getting you some other things to help you see."

"Okay Auntie Gabby," Violet walked with Leslie and continued looking at glasses.

"These have butterflies on the side, very fashionable," Shay put a pair of light coloured glasses on her, "You look very pretty," She complimented.

"Thanks," She smiled, "I wish I could see myself in them."

"Trust me sweetheart," She told her and she felt a slight pain in her lower back and cringed, as she feared she might be in labour. Holding her abdomen she stood up and looked at where Kelly was talking to Matt. If she told him now he'd freak out and rush her to the hospital. She knee they had time, she'd tell him when her contractions were closer together.

"Aunt Gabby!" Violet called her over, "Do you like these?"

"Yes, very pretty Violet. Do you want to try on other ones?"

"Maybe," She said, "Is there a light pink one like this?"

"Not with butterflies but there is one with little blue stars," Gabby took off her current glasses and put the new ones on, "Oh these are beautiful Violet. They were made for you. Why don't we get these two pairs all right? We need to wait her for a while while they fix them up for you. But we can go get something to eat."

"Yay!" She cheered happily and Gabby took the gasses over to the eye doctor. She again measured Violet's eyes and said, "They'll be ready in three hours."

"Lets all go out for lunch," Matt looked at Leslie and Kelly, including them as well.

"I don't think I can," Shat felt another contraction, "I'm in labour."

"WHAT? Kelly exclaimed, "We were just at the hospital!"

"Well apparently like you your son doesn't have a good sense of timing," She said through gritted teeth, "I need to get to the hospital."

"Right, right," He took her hand and they rushed out of the office.

"Can we go with them?" Violet asked.

"No, no sweetie we need to wait to get your glasses. We'll see the baby later." Gabby told her.

"You go Babe," Matt knew Gabby wanted to go, "I'll stay with Violet and take her back to the hospital after we're finished lunch."

Gabby gave Violet a quick hug and Matt a kiss and jogged after her friends.

"Okay kiddo where di you want to go for lunch."

"Applebee's," She said, "It's my favourite."

"Applebee's it is then." He took her hand and led her out of the office.

"No!" Diego shook his head, "It doesn't hurt. I don't need any pills." He stared up at the nurses and frowned, "Why don't you believe me?"

"Diego," Laura looked at her son and sighed, bouncing the twins on her knees she said, "You got shot something ruptured your skin. You're crying and you can't move."

"So? Maybe I don't like Heaven Nevaeh and Isabelle being here," He challenged her.

"Leave your sisters out of this," She told him. She was tired and annoyed, as he'd been struggling with this for days, every time he needed to take medication.

"No!" He frowned.

"Let him see what its like without it," Antonio stepped into the room and frowned at his son, "Then he'll see how much it hurts."

"No! It doesn't!" Diego tried to sound convincing in his answer.

"Laura, can you give us a minute?"

"Yeah sure, I'll go check on Leslie," She stood with her daughter's in her arms and left the room followed by the nurses.

"Daddy it doesn't hurt," Diego told him again, "Why would it?"

"Diego I've been shot more times then I'd like to admit. It hurts like hell, especially the first time.'

"But I'm not in pain."

"Diego-"

"No! You don't believe me," He frowned, "I don't want to talk right now."

Running a hand over his face he sighed, "Fine Diego but this isn't over," He left the room and met Laura in a nearby waiting room.

"You know this is kind of your fault," She said looking up at him.

"My fault?"

"You never cry Antonio, not in front of him, what are you always telling him that pain isn't anything, you always need to get back up in fight, like in boxing. You know he worships you, he lives and breathes to please you?"

"So it's my fault he got shot?" He asked her anger spilling over,

"No, it's your fault he's afraid to show emotion, he thinks you'll hate him, Antonio you're the only one that can talk to him."

"Yeah well he doesn't; want to talk to me right now," He shook his head and sighed, "But he might listen to other people who've been shot."

"Antonio you talk to your son first," She said, her tone very threatening.

"I did! He doesn't want anything to do with me!"

"Antonio," She motioned for him to turn around and he saw Jay Halstead, Erin Lindsay, Kim Burgrass, Adam Ruzek and Trudy Platt.

"We can come back later," Lindsay turned to leave.

"No, no its fine," Laura left the room.

"Sorry bro," Halstead stepped forward looking at his friend and mentor.

"It's fine," He rubbed his face, "It was just about Diego, He's not taking any medicine because he thinks getting shot shouldn't hurt; Laura blames me and we got into a fight."

"He's not taking any medication?" Lindsay asked shocked.

"No, not as of this morning, he's in pain but he doesn't show it. He's not going to get any better."

"Want me to talk to him?" Ruzek offered, "I like the little guy."

"Sure, but be prepared for a very angry kid."

"I'm sure its nothing compared to what I was like as a kid," Adam waved his arm and followed the Senior Detective into his son's room.

"Hey Diego, remember me?" Adam asked stepping into the room.=

"Yeah," He nodded, "Officer Ruzek," He smiled.

"That's right, mind if I stay here for awhile and maybe play a game or something."

"Cool, we can play Xbox," He handed him over a controller as he started up the game but he cried out in pain and dropped it.

"Ouch," Ruzek said thinking on his feet, "Being shot hurts real bad."

"You think it hurts?" He turned and looked at him.

"Oh yeah I was shot in the chest and it killed like hell and I was wearing a vest. I know getting sot isn't fun at all. Jay Halstead's been shot at lots of time too. Even when he was in the Marines."

"Like Daddy."

"That's right buddy," Antonio told him.

"I was shot in the shoulder," Diego told Ruzek.

"I know that's why came here to give you this," He took out of his pocket a piece of paper and handed it over, "It's a card that welcomes you to the support group for cops who have been shot."

'There's a group?"

"Well not officially but we have lots of services. I'm sure you know how much it hurts. We need lots of help to get better."

"Even Daddy?" He looked skeptical.

"Yeah buddy even me," Antonio told him, "I know when I was shot sometimes it didn't look like I was in pain but I was; and when you were kidnaped ask anyone I was a total mess."

Diego scrunched up his face, "That's different," He insisted, "Now can you leave please?" He asked as he lay back down and closed his eyes.

"Thanks for your help." Antonio patted Ruzek and Halsted on the shoulder as they left the room. He stayed and sat down beside Diego's bed knowing he'd wake up soon in major pain.

"Uncle Antonio," Violet walked into the room happily, "Guess what?"

"What?" He lifted her onto his lap.

"You're blurry and Auntie Leslie is having her baby," She explained fast.

Antonio stared at her as he tried to get all of the information in, "You can see?" He pointed to her glasses, "Very cute."

"Thanks, did you hear me?"

"Leslie's having her baby," Matt repeated as he walked into the room, "Just had her baby actually," He said reading a text.

"Ooh! Ooh!" Violet jumped down from Antonio's lap and ran to Matt, "Can I see him now?"

"She can see?" Antonio asked.

"Everything's blurry but she can see outlines," Matt explained, "She's going to need therapy and some additional; resources and maybe a walking stick sometimes."

"Come on Uncle Matt!" Violet tugged on his hand, "I can see the door!"

"Okay, okay," He smiled brightly at her happiness, she was so excited to be able to see things and she was amazed at everything.

The Maternity ward was on the same floor as Pediatrics so it only took a few minutes for Matt and Violet to get there. Once he asked for the room and explained why Violet was wearing a hospital bracelet and (and the nurse checked to make sure she was contagious) they were allowed to go and see the new baby.

"Up for visitors?" Matt knocked and entered the room.

"Yeah," Leslie smiled, "I'm still trying to take it all in. It happened so fast," She admitted and she was right for entire birth of her son took less then four hours.

"Can I hold him? Is he my god-brother?" Violet wondered.

"If you can get him away from Uncle Kelly and Yes." She answered both questions.

Kelly was sitting beside Leslie on the bed proudly holding their son in his arms.

"Uncle Kelly can I hold him?" Violet asked as she used her hands to feel her way towards the bed. "Ouch," She cried bumping into the bed and hurting her knee. "Uncle Matt it's not working?" She frowned miserably.

"Remember the eye doctor said it'll take time," He reminded her. Until the new equipment came in the eye doctor had suggested Violet used her hands to feel her way around things if she wanted to walk on her own.

"I want it now," She frowned.

"Come here sweetie," Matt took her hand; he took it and gently placed it on the baby's head.

"He has hair," She smiled feeling the thin line of hair.

"Very dark hair," Leslie quipped.

"Is Auntie Gabby here?" Violet wondered.

"Yeah sweetheart I'm here," Gabby, replied, "You need something?"

"No I just want to hold the baby."

"Oh Kelly let her hold him, then I get a turn" Leslie rolled her eyes, "You stole him from me the minute I got him."

"Hold his head," Kelly helped Violet sit on the bed and hold the newborn baby, "That's it."

"He looks cute," She observed, "I think he's very cute."

"He is," Leslie, promised, "Do you want to know his name?"

"Uh-huh!"

"His names Caleb Severide-Shay."

Just then Caleb started to fuss in Violet's arms and he was soon crying; his mouth opening as wide as it could as his high-pitched screams filled the small room.

"Okay, okay," Leslie took him, "Mommy's here." She held him close to her and undid the strap of her hospital gown and attempted to feed him, to her surprise he took to her nipple right away. "He's defiantly your son Kelly," She looked at her best friend, "Always hungry and loves boobs."

"Oh very funny," Kelly rolled his eyes, "He could be like you too," He added.

"Okay true," She smiled.

"Come on Violet," Gabby walked around the bed and took her hand, "We should get you back up to the hospital room. They only kept you out for a few hours to have your eyes checked.

"But Aunt Gabby I'm fine," She groaned, "Why can't I go home?"

"Because you had major surgery and the doctors want to keep you at least another week."

"At least Diego's with me," She shrugged her shoulders and walked back to her room and as Gabby helped her get back into bed she heard Diego moaning and crying in his sleep.

"Aunt Gabby," She motioned to the bed.

She made sure Violet was okay and went over to her nephew, "It's okay Diego you're safe."

"Daddy! Daddy! He woke up screaming and looking around for Antonio, terrified when he didn't see him.

"Ssh Diego," Gabby soothed, "I'm here Auntie Gabby's here."

Diego collapsed sobbing into his aunt's arms, "Where's Mommy and Daddy?"

Just as he said that Antonio and Laura cam rushing into the room, "We heard him scream? What happened?" Antonio asked.

"I think he was having a nightmare, he woke up asking for you Antonio," Gabby kissed the side of his head and stood up letting Antonio and Laura comfort him.

"Oh Baby," Laura ran her hand over his face.

"No!" He cried out, "Daddy!"

"Diego I'm here but your mother wants to help you too."

"Where's Eva?"

"She would have just gotten home from school.

"Isabelle and Nevaeh?

"They're with Abuela and Abuelo and your Uncle Matt."

"I want some medicine," He looked up at his parents.

"Of course," Laura stood and left the room to get a nurse.

"Daddy!" Diego reached for and clung to his father, "I'm scared."

"I know you are buddy but you're safe now."

He curled up into his side and closed his eyes again, "I can't close my eyes. I see them."

Antonio just soothed him, that was all he could do accept for going out and finding who did this to his son but he promised Laura he wouldn't do that. She wanted him with Diego and helping him get better. He knew she was right, she usually was; still though he wanted to know who had caused his son so much pain.
