Chapter 20
They had signed the final documents. Finally, after almost a year Violet was now officially their daughter. They were both ecstatic and filled with happiness. They had spent the last week finishing the adoption process and were not finished. They had needed Leslie and Kelly, who were Violet's godparents to be witnesses to the final adopting signing papers.
"Congratulations Mr. Casey Ms. Dawson," Mr. Begly took back the documents, "I'll go and make copies of these," He stood and left the office.
"I can't wait to tell her," Gabby turned in her seat and gave Matt a hug and kiss. Then, turning to Javier and Rafael who were playing in the corner of the room she said, "Violet's now officially your big sister."
Rafael was busy playing with his toys but Javier looked at his mother for a minute and then went back to looking at Caleb who was sleeping in his car seat. He'd been intrigued by the week old all morning.
"Here you are," Mr. Begly returned to the office and handed Matt and Gabby a brown folder, "All of our copies if the information are in there. Is there anything else you need?"
"No, no I think we're good," Gabby stood up and smiled, "Thank you so much for all of your help."
"Oh it was no problem, really we're all glad everything worked out," He handed them another envelope, "You won over a lot of hearts here this is just our way of saying thank you."
Matt and Gabby looked at each other as Matt opened the check; as they saw what was inside, a check for one thousand dollars they didn't know what to say.
"We can't-" Matt was cut off by Mr. Begly.
"You can and we all want you too. My partners and I and our other lawyers all appreciate how nice you've been to us and you give so much to our community we wanted to give something to you."
"Thank you," A few tears spilled from Gabby's eyes, "This'll really help us a lot." And it would, not only did they have three children to look after but they also needed to worry about Violet's medical bills and the new equipment she'd need. They'd already talked about holding off on the wedding even more as they just didn't know how they were going to afford it.
"You're welcome," He said again and shook both of their hands. "And I think your boys are interested in Caleb right?" He saw nine-month-old Javier crawl over to Caleb's car seat and peer inside.
The other four adults turned around, "Javier be careful," Gabby barely got to her son before Caleb began to cry.
"No it's okay," Leslie told her as she soothed her son, "We should probably get going I think he's getting hungry."
"I'll drive," Kelly was already waiting at the door the red and black baby bag slung over his shoulder.
"Yeah," Leslie nodded and picked up the empty car seat handing it over to Kelly so she could properly carry Caleb.
"We'll walk out with you guys," Gabby told her best friends, "You two sure you want to come by the hospital later today? Maybe you should catch up on your sleep."
"No, no," Leslie shook her head, "We want to see Violet and Diego too."
"Is Diego still not taking any medication?" Kelly wondered.
"It's a consent struggle. Laura and Antonio are at there wits end with him," Gabby told them, "They really don't; know what else to do with him and its hurting everyone."
Kelly shook his head, "He's only eight what could possibly be going through his mind."
"I don't know," Gabby, responded, "I wish I did."
Arriving back at the hospital Matt parked the car and let out a sad sigh, "I can't believe tomorrow it'll be a year since Christie died. I don't want to believe it."
"I know it's hard," Gabby reached over and patted his knee. He and Christie were only just starting to talk to each other again before he got injured and then her car accident happened. He was never able to get the relationship with her she knew he wanted. "But you're giving her daughter the best life possible and that's so important Matt."
He nodded, "About that… I uh- I'm not sure I'm comfortable with her calling us 'Mom' and 'Dad'" He admitted.
"Of course, I understand; Christie was your sister; I could never replace her Matt and we can talk about her as much as you and Violet want or as little as you want. She can just call us Matt and Gabby."
"I think that'd be best," He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the lips before getting out of the car and taking Rafael into his arms, "You want to see your big sister? Rafael looked up at his father and smiled. "I'll take that as a yes," He said and closed the door and went to the truck to unload the stroller. Putting the baby-bag in the bottom he strapped in Rafael and gave him some toys.
"Dada!" Javier saw his father and threw his favourite blanket over his head and giggled.
He loved the game peek-a-boo and would play it all day if he could, "Oh no!" Matt faked horror, "Where's Javi?"
Javier pulled down the blanket from his face and giggled, "Dada!"
"Oh there you are, you silly boy," He joked, "You're silly."
"Yeah silly's one word," Gabby said as she put him in the stroller beside his brother, "Hyper is another word for him especially now as he doesn't like sleeping."
"He's like you Babe," Matt kissed the side of her head and wrapped an arm around her easier as he took the stroller and walked towards the hospital.
As a general unspoken rule an adult was always in the room with Violet and Diego, whether it be Gabby, Matt, Laura, Antonio, Gabby and Antonio's parents or even someone from the firehouse or district. This gave everyone time to try and resume some kind of normal life and sleep habits,
Violet was going to be released next week and would be back in school in less then a week. Matt and Gabby's major problem right now was trying to figure out a way she could pass grade one. She'd missed so much school over the year that the principal had warned them she wouldn't be ready for second grade.
Diego on the other hand was physically healing fine but emotionally and physiologically he was not okay, On top of not taking his medications without a fight he wasn't sleeping more then two hours at night and was having fits, throwing things and hitting and punching whenever he got frustrated.
Walking into the hospital room they fond a very stressed out Antonio sitting in between the two beds. Once he saw them he stood and motioned for Gabby to follow him out into the hallway.
"Violet's been crying all morning since you left," He said once they' walked out of earshot, "I tried to comfort her but Diego threw a pillow at her ear, Violet's really upset."
"Yeah tomorrow is uh- the day her mother died."
Antonio stared at her and sighed, "Geez, a little notice would have been good."
"Not now Antonio," Gabby shook her head, "I'm sorry I forgot to tell you in between trying to balance being a mother, fiancée, managing money and planning a wedding. Plus Violet may not pass first grade and then there's your son-
"Okay," Antonio didn't need to hear anymore, "I get it. I'm sorry," He pulled her into his arms and hugged her, something they both needed.
"I'll take Diego for a walk so you and Matt can talk to Violet," Antonio said as he led the way back towards the hospital room.
"Thanks."
"All right Diego lets go, we're going for a walk," Antonio walked to his son's bed.
"No."
"Diego," Antonio sighed but easily picked him up and placed him in the wheelchair beside his bed, "We're going."
"Whatever," He rolled his eyes and slumped into the chair. "I hate you."
"That's fine," It wasn't fine but Antonio ad heard it so much over the past two weeks it was almost becoming a normal thing for Diego to say.
"Violet," Matt sat on the girl's bed and took her hands, "Aunt Gabby and I have something to tell you."
"Okay."
"You know how we said we were going to adopt you while we signed the papers today."
"No!" Violet sobbed, "Mom-no," She pouted, "I remember! You didn't say anything!" She frowned, "You don't care."
"Oh Violet," Matt had been the one who didn't want to mention n her other as it hurt him to much, "I do care. I loved your mother, she was my older sister; I wish I could tell her how much I loved her."
"I'm not calling you Mom and Dad," She shook her head.
"You don't have to sweetheart, just call us Matt and Gabby." Matt hugged her and kissed the top of her head, "You ready to go to therapy, want me to take you?"
"I don't want to go," She sniffled back tears, "Not today."
Her therapy was very important especially if she ever wanted to be able to read again. They had ordered her a special magnifying glass and some big print books as well as a walking stick. She was being trained to use these items by a very nice young pediatric therapy therapist and Violet liked her very much
"Why don't we just go and see Kristen," Matt suggested, "I'm sure she'd like to talk to you; she'd want to help you feel better."
"Can I show her Javier and Rafael?" She asked with a hint of hopefulness in her voice.
Javier and Rafael hadn't been to the therapy room with her because Matt and Gabby wanted that time spent on her and not making sure the boys didn't get into any trouble. She loved telling her therapist about them though and she did ask.
"Okay Violet but just this one time they're pretty little to be around all that big kid equipment you use," Matt informed her in words she'd understand that this was a one-time thing.
"Okay Matt," Violet smiled and he helped her down off the bed and she held onto the stroller as they walked out of the room and towards the elevators that would take them down to outpatient services.
Antonio took Diego around the pediatric floor and passed the elevator just as Laura came off of it pushing the stroller and Eva walking behind her.
"Hey," Laura walked over to them kissing Antonio on the lips and leaning over to riffle Diego's hair.
"Mom!" The eight yea old groaned, "Can I go back now? Is stupid Violet finished?"
"Diego," Laura scolded, "You don't say things like that."
"Whatever."
"It's not whatever Diego, you need to work on your attitude," Antonio told his son as he pushed the wheelchair back to the hospital room and helped him back onto the bed.
"I want to be alone," He told his family.
"Alright if that's going to help you with your attitude," Laura turned to leave but Isobel began to cry,
"Di! Di!" The four month old kicked her feet and wailed, "DI!"
"Ugh," Diego rolled his eyes, "She can stay if she stops crying."
Laura and Antonio looked at each other; they had suspected Isobel had been crankier lately because she hadn't seen Diego a lot; however they didn't know if Diego could be trusted to be alone with her right now.
"Alright Diego," Laura took her daughter into her arms and placed her on the bed, "Ten minutes alright and I better not see anything wrong with her or you're going to be in a whole new world of trouble. Understand?"
"Yes Ma'am."
"Good, we'll just be getting a snack in the cafeteria she told him as she, Antonio and Eva left the room.
"Di!" Isobel looked happily up at her older brother and snuggled into his side sighing happily.
"Hi Issy," Diego kissed her brown hair and smiled, pulling her closer he began to cry, "I hate that everyone's so mad at me," He sniffed, "But how can I tell them how scared I was? Especially after last year? Mom's going to be so worried and I don't want her to be. And Daddy's going to blame himself. I thought if they thought I wasn't in pain that they wouldn't be upset but Daddy hates me and Mommy's always angry. I wanted to be like Daddy, he's so brave he always protects us. Why can't I do that?
"Di," Isobel pouted and crawled onto his lap and kissed him.
Diego gave his little sister a small smile as he kissed her again, "I love you Issy."
Outside Laura and Antonio looked at each other; they'd sent Eva away but there was not way they were going to let Diego be completely alone plus they'd hope to get some information.
Tip-toeing away Laura whispered, "He wants to protect us; I guess that's both of our faults I mean we raised him to put family first I…."
"No, no," Antonio took her hands, "It's no ones fault Babe; I understand what he's thinking, now that I know for sure what's going on I know we can reason with him and talk things out. But tomorrow, Annabelle's coming over for a visit after school today."
"Oh yeah," She smiled, "Hopefully he'll be excited about that.
"Okay Violet we're here," Matt told his daughter as they walked into one of the pediatric therapy rooms.
"Hi Kristen," Violet could see the outline and a blur of her physiotherapist. Kristen was in her mid-twenties and had just graduated from university.
"Hi sweetheart," She walked over to her, "Can I have my hug?" She knelt down to her level.
"Yes," Violet hugged her, "I brought my baby brothers for you to see," She said and pulled her arm up and pointed in the general direction of where Matt and Gabby were with the stroller, "And Matt and Gabby are my parents now."
"Oh," She smiled, "Congratulations."
"Thanks," She tugged on her hand, "You can hold Javier; he likes people and he's not shy.
"Okay," Kristen said and looked into the stroller but she waited until she got a head no from Gabby before picking up one of the twins. "Hi buddy, She held him.
"He can crawl but he's still learning how to talk and walk. I wanted to be able to read to them but..." She trailed off sadly.
"What did we say Violet? It may take you a little longer to read because of your eyes but you're doing better all the time. Your brothers are here today and I'm sure they'd like to hear a story. How about we do that first?"
"Okay," She agreed and let Kristen lead her over to one of the tables, "I want to read the Cat in the Hat," She began to search for the book and smiled as she found it.
"Here you go," Kristen handed the book to her as well as a magnifying glass.
Violet held the book with one hand and the magnifying glass with the other and slowly she began to read. She was able to get through four pages before saying her head hurt but she wanted to finish the story and so she did.
"Violet that's great!" Gabby smile proudly, "I know how hard that wad for you. And the boys sat and listened to all of it they must have really liked it."
"I only hurt a little bit," Violet, said as she smiled, "I want to show Javier and Rafael how I can walk with the walking stick," She said and stood up, "Can I pretend I'm looking for something again?"
"Sure," Kristen nodded and began to set up the exercise. It was usually a struggle to get Violet to complete her exercises but now she was asking for them and she bet it was because she was proud to show her younger brothers what she could do.
"Okay," Violet smiled as Kristen handed her the cane, "I'm going to find the door," She began walking around the room using the cane in front of her to feel for things, "Is this the window?" She asked hopefully as she taped it.
"Yes it is," Kirsten confirmed.
"Then the doors this way," Violet knew the door was at the end of the window as she'd been told before; she kept walking and reached the door handle and smiled proudly. "I did it!" She cheered happily, "Matt, Gabby I did it!"
"We saw!" Matt walked to her and lifted her up, "And we're so proud of you sweetheart," He kissed her cheek, "So proud."
"I want to use this all the time!" Now that she knew kind of how to use it she wanted some of her independence back.
"We'll hopefully yours will come soon," Kristen told her, "Now how about we play a game to celebrate all your hard work. I think I have some stickers for you too."
"Yay!" She cheered happily and walked back over to her after Matt placed her back on the floor.
At five o'clock Annabelle walked into the hospital room holding her grandmother's hand and carrying two big presents. She had picked out presents for her friends all by herself and she was very excited to give it to them.
"Annie," Diego smiled at his friend, "Mom and Dad said you were coming," For some reason he knew he needed to be nice to her, she was his friend but he liked her a lot.
"Annabelle!" Violet squealed happily before anyone was able to say anything, "I want to hug you!"
Annabelle ran happily over to her best friend and joined her on her bed she hugged her tightly, "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Here," She handed over her present, "I can-uh-"
"No, no sweetheart," Gabby gently took Violet's hands, "That's alright but do you have any questions?"
Her grandmother had told her Violet couldn't see anymore but she wasn't sure what that meant. She still had eyes and she was wearing glasses, wouldn't they help? "Grandma-" She turned her head and looked at her grandmother.
"Ms. Dawson said you could ask questions honey," She told her, "Just make sure you ask them nicely."
She nodded her head and turned back to Gabby, "Violet you're wearing glasses, how come they don't help?"
"They can't. My eyes got broke," She admitted, "Right Gabby?"
"Yeah sweetheart," Gabby nodded, "You see sweetie," She looked at Annabelle, "Violet's eyes got really badly hurt when she banged her head and they have a permanent bruise that can't go away. Violet's glasses help her see outlines of people and a few colours."
"Oh," Annabelle said, "Like a shadow?"
"Yeah similar."
"Violet lets open your present now," Annabelle took her hands like Gabby had before and helped her open the present. "It's a book with big print," She told her smiling, "It's all Robert Munsch books."
Violet smiled, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Annabelle turned to see Diego still hadn't opened his present, "You can open yours Diego," She told him and she smiled as Diego opened his and saw a big hardcover book of jokes. "I hope it makes you feel better."
"I'm sure it will."
