Part 18: Rebuttal

"You're back."

Didi glanced up from taping shut a packing box. She should have locked her office door, rather than merely closing it.

"My PA gave me your resignation letter."

She was hoping for some sort of expression of regret; an appeal for her to change her mind; at the very least, an apology. Instead, Romo turned the conversation to the case which had prompted her drastic action.

"You went to see Adama. I'm pleased."

"You're happy I went and talked with him? You told me not to," she reminded him.

"Of course I wanted you to go and see Adama. I knew you'd ignore me and do the opposite of what I asked. You've saved me from having to explain what the media might dredge up when his son nominates. How did he react?" he added, oblivious to her temper which was flaring at the knowledge he could play her so easily.

"Why does it matter?" she countered, turning away and determinedly placing books into another cardboard box with jerky movements.

"Will he cause trouble, do you think?" he pressed. "For Lee? Or for us?"

"Why don't you ask him yourself?" She knew she should be used to Romo's insensitivity by now. "I've resigned-"

"I tore up your resignation."

"You what?" She mentally weighed the thick legal tome she'd just removed from her bookshelf. It would make a good weapon.

"You'll be completely bored without me to wrangle with, and I'll get away with far too much if you're not around to keep me in check. So why don't we just kiss and-"

"You think you can manipulate us all, don't you? Lee Adama. Bill Adama. Me. She's alive," she blurted out, desperate to wipe away his smug smile. "Laura Roslin. She's living in a cabin with Bill Adama."
