Chapter 23

"What do you think boys?" Gabby looked up from her computer screen and over to her sons who were playing on the carpet nicely, "Should we give this new school a call? See if we can enrol Violet for September?"

"Lee!" Javier babbled happily, "Lee!"

"I guess that's a yes then," She picked up her cell phone and dialled the number on the website.

"Hello, Judith E. Heumann school for the blind, Amanda speaking how may I help you?

"Hello, my names Gabriela Dawson and I was wondering if I could set up a tour of your school? I have a six year old daughter and after an accident she became legally blind."

"Are you thinking about enrolment for September?"

"Yes, if that's at all possible."

"Yes, we can for sure meet her and yourself. Do you have any days that would work best?"

"My fiancé's a firefighter so he works shifts, I'm just getting his schedule, Wednesday or Thursday of next week he's off."

"How about Wednesday at twelve o'clock? You'll have a meeting with our School Principal and then she'll take you on a tour and talk to you about our school and show you some of our classrooms. Will your daughter be joining you?"

"I'm not sure what do you suggest?"

"We'll we encourage new students to get as familiar as they can with our school before they start but there's lots of time for that; we would love to meet her, but its up to you and your fiancée if you'd like her to come or not."

"No, I think it'll be good for her to go. She's having a rough time at home right now and I think she needs to see what a positive environment will be like."

"We hope it's a great experience for all of you, now again my names Amanda and I'm on of the administrative secretary's here. Do you know where we're located?"

"Yes vaguely and your website had petty good directions as well."

"Good well we'll se you on Wednesday at noon then."

"Yes see you then," Gabby said and she hung up.

"Ma!" Rafael crawled up to her and held up a toy.

"Want Mommy to play with you?" She took the toy and sat down the floor and lifted her son into her lap.

"Hi, my names Violet Casey and I'm six years old. Gabby and Matt deserve to win your contest because I love them. They're my Mommy and Daddy but I don't call them that because they adopted me, before they were only my Uncle and Aunt. They help me a lot and I love them and they work really hard and are heroes too. I want them to be happy and I know they want a wedding."

"Perfect sweetheart," Antonio grinned after he'd turned off the camera, "That was great, I'm sure the producers of the station will love it."

"I hope so," She responded and placed her walking stick on the ground and stood up and began walking slowly, "Don't help me Uncle Antonio I can do it myself,' She warned but after she spoke she ran her knee into a sharp corner in the wall, "Ouch!" She yelled in surprise and her loss of balance caused her to fall and hit her head on the floor. "Owe!" She sobbed.

"Oh sweetie," Antonio was at her side within seconds, "Your knees just a little bruised, I'm worried about year head."

"Uncle Antonio," She looked at him, "I don't want to go to the hospital," She sobbed knowing the last time she hit her head she lost her sight, "Please don't take me what if I did something really bad."

"Oh sweetie," He helped her up and then hugged her tightly, "It'll be okay it was just a short fall but I'm going to call Gabby and I'm going to watch you alright. If you develop more symptoms of a concussion I'll have to take you in."

"Alright," She nodded her head, "Can I go play with Diego now?" She asked hopefully.

"Yeah sure," He nodded and helped her walk into the living room where Diego was crashing his police cars into walls and making fake gun noises.

"Diego!" Antonio exclaimed, "What are you doing?"

"Being a criminal," He explained, "They don't have to follow any rules. Maybe then I won't get shot or kidnapped if I'm one of them."

"Diego that's-"

"Let it go Babe," Laura stood up from the carpet and whispered to her husband, "It's not worth the meltdown.

But Antonio refused to let his on believed it was better to be a criminal then a police officer, "Bad people are the ones who kidnapped and shot you Diego! You want to do that to other people too? Is that okay now?"

"Antonio-" Laura warned again.

"Well its better then not being allowed to hurt them! You still haven't found out who shot me! Criminals can go and shoot people they don't like cops can't!"

"Oh," Antonio shook his head angrily, "I need a walk," He left angrily.

"Whatever," Diego went back to playing his game and didn't notice Violet frown.

"Diego cops are the good ones. Bad people break laws."

"But they can hurt people who hurt them," He tried to explain, "That's better then nothing."

"Come on Diego," Antonio returned into the room and threw him a light jacket, "We're going for a drive. Not an option lets go!"

"Antonio where are you taking him?" Laura asked.

"I'm taking him somewhere so that he can see what police officers really do," He said, "Lets go Diego!"

Diego took the jacket but didn't put it on and for the entire way to the police district he didn't talk. They weren't at 21; it was 16, which Diego knew was just outside of District 21 territory. "What are we doing here?"

"You'll see," Antonio climbed out of the car and walked up to the precinct Diego having to jog to catch up, walking up to the front desk he aught the Desk Sargent's attention and said, "My names Detective Antonio Dawson, I'm here to see Justin Mera in violent crimes."

The Sargent looked down and saw Diego and then gave Antonio a questioning look before saying, "Down on the right."

"Thank you," He said and followed the direction of the unit he'd already walked before, "Hey Justin," He smiled as he saw his old friend at his desk, "Mind if we talk."

"Sure," He stood, "Are you sure you want to-" He nudged his head towards Diego.

"Yeah," he nodded and followed his friend into the break room, "Diego this is Detective Mera, he's the lead Detective on your shooting."

"Oh," Diego looked up at him, "Did you catch them yet?" He attempted to sound brave.

"Almost buddy, it looks like well…." He didn't; know how much Antonio wanted him to be told.

"They were gang members bud but it wasn't related to any gangs so Violet Crimes is looking after it. You want to talk to the Detective.

Shaking his head Diego began to sob, "I thought…. You- thought you didn't care!"

"No, no," Antonio pulled him into his arms, "I just couldn't investigate it myself I promised your mother I'd stay with you. I didn't want you to get upset but they've almost got them Diego," He promised, "They're not going to win!"

"I still want to be like you Daddy!" He sobbed.

"I know, I know," He held him close, "I know."

"Tell you what Diego," Justin spoke up, "I know its not as cool as an Intelligence Unit badge but we run a community services division here in this district, I might be able to get you a replica police badge, I think you earned it for being so brave and coming down here."

Diego looked up at Antonio but didn't say anything so Antonio answered for him, "I think that would be great wouldn't it Diego?"

"I'll give it to Violet," He told him, "She's braver then I am."

"My niece," Antonio explained to Justin, "She's legally blind and she's going through a rough time right now her and Diego are really good friends."

"Well I think we can get one foe both of you," Justin told him and Diego finally looked up at him and he offered him a soft smile. After getting the bandages Antonio took Diego home and Diego went excitedly in search of his cousin and he found her pouting as Eva watched TV.

"Violet," He walked towards her, "I got you something. It's a police badge for being really brave. Daddy's friend gave them to me and I got one for you too." He put it he in hand just like Antonio had told him to. "Do you want to play with them?"

"I can't," She replied, "I can't to anything."

"Hum," She thought about a response but couldn't think of anything.

"How about you play outside?" Antonio suggested, "There's lots of things you can do outside."

"No," Violet shook her head, "I can't do anything Uncle Antonio."

"Come on Violet," He encouraged her, "Lets go I know you love playing outside."

"No!" She yelled, "Just…. I want to go home!"

"Yeah well I want you to go home too!" Diego replied angrily and ran away crying.

"Uh!" Eva gave up and turned off the TV, "Violet…" She started but Antonio shook his head and understanding she stood and walked away.

"Okay I'll take you home if you want but what do you want to do at home?"

"Sleep. That's the only thing I can do anymore."

"Alight sweetie," He wanted to tell her she could do lots of things but didn't know how to tell her without her getting upset. He was frustrated with her to as he knew giving her the badge was a big step for Diego and when she didn't want it made him upset, Antonio knew that's not what he needed right now. "Lets go, I'll take you home," He went to the couch and helped her up and into the coatroom where he helped her get on her shoes and jacket as well.

The drive to her house was quiet and Gabby was surprised to see them as she opened the door, "Antonio," She looked at her older brother first, "Everything alright?"

"Yeah she just wanted to come home, mind if I come in?"

"Sure, here Violet you can play in the living room.

"I'm tired I want to sleep," She faked a yawn.

"All right sweetie," Gabby wasn't sure if she believed her, she'd been having long naps every day and wasn't playing a lot when she was awake; she was getting really worried about her. "I'll be back, just make yourself at home," She told Antonio ass eh helped Violet up the stairs.

She returned a few minutes later with a deep frown on her face, "What happened?" She asked, and after Antonio had finished explaining it all she sighed, "It's not your fault Antonio, she's just really sad right now, Matt and I are pretty worried and so are her doctors. She was doing so well when she was in the hospital but now she's gotten worse. I made a meeting with the elementary school for the blind for next week so hopefully if we can get her into some summer programs after schools over that'll help. I really want her to see that she can do things and I want to get her all the devices she may need."

"You're doing a great job with her," Antonio side hugged her, "Really Gabby I'm so impressed."

"You're a great father Antonio," She hugged him back and they stayed and talked for a few minutes before Antonio left again and Gabby set about doing some household chores.
