Be Thy Paramour?

Chapter 11:

"When were you going to tell me?" Jocelyn glared down on her daughter, her face showing that eerie calmness she had always hated seeing in her mother.

"Believe me when I say it's not that big of a deal. Mrs. Blackthorn just has a stick up her—." Clary stopped herself as her mother's eyes darkened, begging her to finish and wind up in her room for a week. She bit back the rest of the sentence, settling into the dining room chair while crossing her arms as if she were a three year old throwing a tantrum. How much could she get away with? Just as that thought crept across her brain the front door opened and in strolled Luke, holding a bundle of mail. His hair looking a bit shaggier than usual and his glasses perched on his nose. He had been whistling but the air flew out as he rounded the corner and assessed the situation. He had learned how to deal with a house full of women.

"What's up?" He gave Jocelyn a goofy grin, knowing it was probably the only way Clary could get out of this room with her life. It, however, just infuriated her more as she stood over Clary, who was pretty sure she literally saw steam coming out of her mom's ears.

"What's up? What's up is that this one over here back talked a teacher, landing her in detention. Do you know that is on your record? You're a delinquent!" Her mother gasped. Overemotional as always. Jocelyn sagged against Luke who had moved to her side, attempting to calm his wife. Clary bit back a cruel laugh. Her mom was always worried about her school record. One slip up and it was as if she had told her mom she had joined a cult and was leaving next week for some mountain based convent. In Jocelyn's mind it seemed that college was the most important thing that would ever happen in Clary's life.

"Jocey, why don't you go lay down for a bit. I'll handle Miss Juvenile." This in some weird twisted way reassured Jocelyn as she left the room to find solace in her bedroom. After the affirming click of the door Luke took Clary's hand and led her to the couch.

"So what went down?" He asked, removing his glasses and rubbing a hand of his face.

"Well, my teacher is a total b…bad person…and sent me and Tessa and three other boys to detention just because we had been talking. I kid you not, there were maybe five other group discussions going on at the same time we were. It was quite ridiculous." Clary growled agitated with the world.

"This teacher was probably just having a bad day." He smiled down on his practically biological daughter.

"Well she seems to be the spinster type. She's a total shrew. I can't believe she's even married!" Clary grumbled. Luke had grown accustomed to these types of rampages. Jocelyn did the same thing. He just chuckled and kissed the top of her head.

"Oh you humor me far too much."

"You find my pain humorous?" She feigned hurt.

"No I find your over dramatizations humorous. And on occasions stressful."

"What is a daughter supposed to do? Stress is one of the job requirements." She grinned.

"Well you're doing your job. This—" he motioned to his graying hair, "—is all you." She merely giggled and stuck her tongue out at him.

Clary thought it best not to attempt going to her room, seeing as how she'd have to walk by her mother's room and that wouldn't turn out well. So instead she went down to the basement to check up on Jonathan. He had taken up residence in the guest room down their. But of course when she reached his room he wasn't there. Instead of going to scour the house for him, Clary did a graceful belly flop on to the bed. She settled back and just stared at the ceiling.

There wasn't a whole lot to do. She was in one of those moods. So she just stared at the ceiling. And in the middle of her wandering train of thought, the phone rang upstairs. She heard Luke answer and then, surprisingly, he called down to her.

"Clary, some Lightwood is on the phone for you." Oh it was just Isabelle.

"Tell them I can't come to the phone right now." She yelled back.

"I'm sorry Jace; she can't come to the phone right now…she's in the bathroom. She had Mexican food for dinner and…" But Clary had bounded to the top of the stairs slightly winded.

"You are a terrible human being," she seethed, "and you can now go die in a hole." Luke just chuckled and walked back to the kitchen. Clary held the phone to her ear and then quickly yanked it away.

"Man, do you really have to laugh into the phone like that?" Clary switched ears, seeing as how her right ear was ringing.

"Sorry." Jace chuckled into the receiver. "Was that your dad? He's hilarious." Jace mused.

"That was my step dad Luke." Clary grumbled back, her cheeks felt like open flames.

"I like him."

"What are you calling my house for anyways?" She sighed, rubbing her eyes with her free hand.

"I wanted to know if you would like to go out on a date." Jace spoke nonchalantly.

Not the longest chapter I admit. But I wanted to leave it there. It felt right. I am also extremely sorry for the delay. I kid you not, like the day after my last update I started the 'Hush Hush' series and holy hell, I cried a whole lot in 'Finale'. Not to mention I had just started 'Finale' when I thought, "Hey you know what would be fun? Going to see Vampire Academy." So I did do that and then went straight to Target to buy the book. So right after I finished the 'Hush Hush' books I got addicted to the VA books and read them in about one and a half weeks. Can I just say, if you have not read any of these books, I strongly recommend them. I am now extremely in love with Dimitri…which I'm writing a story in his POV so I ask that if you've read the books check it out. And if you haven't, well go read them right now. I swear, they are nothing like Twilight…at all… well the emotions I felt for 'Blood Promise' kind of resembled 'New Moon', but I don't want to spoil the books so read them if you haven't and give them a chance!

Lots of Hugs- Emma
