F is for fish
When Mai had put forth the idea of a fish tank in his office to releave stress he'd been less than supportive of the idea. A fish tank made noise, had water required care and housed living things. He wasn't keen on any of that. He didn't drink water, fish made in it. If he had a fish tank in his office he'd be forced into caring for it. He didn't trust Mai to be responsible for another living thing. He was surprised she had kept herself alive.
Yet in true Mai fashion she'd disobeyed him. At first she'd started sneaking the supplies in over the course of a few weeks. A bag of gravel here, a air filter there. The final day she came into work at the crack of dawn and brought a small tank in, filling it and getting it all set up before Naru or Lin could stop her.
To say that he'd been upset when he came in and saw the brightly colored fish flitting around and the filter bubbling would be a colossal understatement. He'd been livid especially when he'd seen the wet carpet and damaged wood.
It had lessened somewhat when the clients had responded well to it. They found it relaxing and Mai had managed to keep the fish fed and alive and the tank clean. So long as she didn't slack off he'd let her keep it.
Then to his surprise he'd spend time watching the fish flit about. He'd watch how they scrambled for food and rush to the top whenever Mai when near the tank. He's smile as she'd bend over to sprinkle the fish food on the water's surface.
This was his favorite part of the fish tank. When her skirt would ride up when she'd feed the fish, and so long as she did that at least once a day she could damn well keep the thing for the rest of her life.
Yes, Naru started to really like those fish, and when the first one died and Mai had been devastated he had been the one to go out that night and buy a replacement for her. He'd come back to the office well after dark to float the bag to adjust the temperature and then slowly add the water to get the new fish used to it's new home.
When Mai had come in the next morning she'd been delighted to see a new fish. He'd feigned disinterest in the whole affair, but he was glad to see the smile that lit up her face. She'd gone over the computer to find out what type the new fish was and had been surprised to find out it was an Angel Fish.
A bright, angel fish.
For his bright angel.
