Chapter Thirteen: An Empty Bed

Ciel sighed heavily for the umpteenth time that day as Sebastian tucked him into bed. For the past few days since Anna's appearance in the Trancy Manor, he and Sebastian have been scrambling for possibilities on how to restore Anna's memory and return her to her rightful home in the Phantomhive Manor.

In her current state, alarming or straining her too much will likely jeopardize her and her unborn child, he mused. Luckily the starlight powder Michael delivered to us earlier will prove helpful to protect the child, nevertheless we must ensure that she is restrained enough to douse her with it. But how?

"Young Master," Sebastian addressed firmly, breaking Ciel from his thoughts, "I would advise that you prevent yourself from worrying too much. Anna would comment that you will fall ill should you overexert your mind too much before bed."

The young earl scowled at him. "Anna's not here, mind you," he barked, pulling the blankets over him as he turned over on his side away from Sebastian. "Good night."

The demon butler remained silent for a moment before bowing slightly. "Good night, Young Master."

Blowing out the lights atop the candlelight holder he was holding before swiftly exiting the room, closing the door with a quiet click.

Annabelle… he thought longingly, a soft sigh escaping his lips. I hope you are doing well. Life in the Phantomhive Manor just isn't the same without you in it.

Returning to his and Anna's shared servant chambers, he found Tristan sitting on the bed, blinking at him with large azure eyes. Upon entering, Tristan outstretched his hands towards Sebastian and murmured, "Daddy."

Sebastian faked a smile and strode over to sit down on the bed, picking up his son and placing him on his lap, carefully holding onto him.

"Daddy," Tristan began, blinking up at him, "where's Mommy?"

A pang of grief struck through Sebastian's heart as he stared into the innocent eyes of his one year old son. Through having a family Sebastian came to discover more and more emotions that he had formally associated with beings other than himself. Nevertheless anger could not help but surge through him that his son had to experience a similar lonely pain at such a young age.

You'll pay for this, Claude Faustus, Sebastian swore to himself, I swear that you'll pay for stealing my wife away; for taking away from her home; from her son; from me.

"Daddy?" Tristan murmured, tilting his head slightly to the side.

Sebastian lifted Tristan up into his arms and carried him into his room with Fang, Kylee, and the kits, laying him down in his crib.

"Your mother is away on important business," Sebastian lied, folding the blankets over him, "she will not be back for a while."

Tristan blinked at him twice before opening his mouth. Despite the tender age of one, Tristan's mixed angel-demon instincts told him that something was off. "Daddy, why aren't you telling me where Mommy is?"

The Phantomhive head butler hesitated, realizing that his clever son had easily seen through his lie. Gently he stroked the child's cheek. "I'm sorry, but your mother was taken away by bad people," he admitted. "I promise I will get her back. Till then, you need to stay strong, okay? Do it for your mother; for me."

Tristan sniffled, tears forming in the corners of his eyes. "I wanna see Mommy."

Sebastian picked his son back up and hugged him close. Feeling Tristan tremble in his arms only fueled the demon's anger and hatred towards Claude. It wasn't fair to make this child suffer.

"Shhh…" Sebastian hushed, patting him on the back gently. "Stay strong, Tristan. When I get your mother you can scold her for not being here, okay?"

Tristan nodded, and Sebastian laid him back down into the crib, brushing away his son's tears.

The door creaked open and Fang padded in, flying up onto the crib.

"I'll stay with him again," Fang purred, leaping down and curling up next to Tristan. "No child should be sleeping alone."

Sebastian dipped his head in acknowledgement. "Thank you, Fangorn," he responded softly, leaning down to place a kiss on Tristan's forehead. "Good night, Tristan."

"Good night, Daddy," Tristan responded, closing his eyes.

Sebastian stayed for a while after his son had fallen asleep, gently stroking his fair black hair as he allowed the peacefulness of the room to ease his heart. After an hour or so passed, Sebastian rose and silently left, closing the door behind him.

Now, time to make preparations for a confrontation, Sebastian thought. The faster we return Annabelle to her rightful home, the better. The longer we delay, the riskier her situation will become. And I refuse to allow our next child to be born in the house of an enemy to the Young Master. We will have to act post-haste.

After finishing his preparations, Sebastian returned to his and Anna's bedroom, got changed, and slid into the bed, sighing heavily as he palmed the empty space beside him where his wife used to lay.

It feels much colder than it used to, he thought, Annabelle… I swear to you, I will get you back.
