Thanks for the reviews! I'm glad you all liked the appearance of Cragen. I had to strategically plan his comeback. Here is more...
He turned the final screw and the pushed down on the frame to make sure it was sturdy. "I think it looks good," Don said, looking at Elliot who was putting the pink bassinet sheet on the foam cushion. "You just sit the basket here on top."
Elliot put the cushion in the basket, and placed the basket on top of the frame. "It does look nice," he said. "Liv will love it. Thanks for your help."
"Sure," Don smiled, running his finger along the pink satin bow that garnished the white bassinet. "Did Olivia pick this out?" he asked. "She's never really struck me as the type to go all ga-ga for pink, lacy baby things."
Elliot smiled, "Well maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, but yeah…everything she chooses for the baby is pink and lacy." He sighed, "I kind of like that side of her…"
Don nodded, "Yeah…"
"Dada…" Noah toddled down the hall, his eyes groggy and Elliot realized Olivia was right about the toddler bed. If Noah could climb down from his mother's bed and walk into the living room, he'd easily be able to escape the toddler bed unnoticed. "Dada…" he said again and Elliot reached down and picked him up, smoothing down his messy hair and kissing him on his cheek.
"Hey buddy, did you have a good nap?" Elliot asked.
Noah nodded, "Want cookies…" he said.
Elliot laughed, "You don't need cookies." He ran his fingers through the little boy's hair once more, "Is Mommy still asleep?" he asked.
"Mama sleepy," Noah answered with a nod.
"Yeah," Elliot smiled. "She's always sleepy…your baby sister is wearing her out."
"Mama sleepy…I want cookies," Noah said again, letting Elliot know that he expected him to give him a special treat since his mother wasn't there to say no. Olivia didn't want Noah eating a lot of junk food, but Elliot did give him cookies or candy once in a while. He considered it to be father-son bonding.
Elliot laughed, "You are sneaky, little man," he teased. He glanced at Cragen who was watching the two of them and smiled, "Noah…I want you to meet someone." He pointed, "This is Captain Cragen…he's a friend of Mommy and Daddy."
Noah stared at him, but didn't say anything. He hadn't noticed the stranger sitting in the living room until his father and pointed him out, and now he seemed shy and scared. "Hi Noah," Don said gently. "You can call me Uncle Don." He looked at Elliot, "Good grief…he looks like Liv. I can't believe it…"
Elliot nodded, "I know…when I first met him, I thought she'd given birth to him." He smiled, "I'm glad he looks like her though…that means maybe the baby and Noah will look somewhat alike. My other kids all look alike, and I'd hate for Noah to feel like he looks different."
"Dada…want cookies," Noah whined again and Elliot laughed.
"Do you want me to go get him a cookie?" Don asked with a grin.
"In the kitchen," Elliot motioned, "But just one. Liv will kill me if I ruin his dinner with cookies."
Don walked into the kitchen, easily finding the cookies in a cookie jar on the counter. He grabbed one and took it back to the living room, offering it to the little boy, "Here Noah…" he smiled.
Noah grabbed the cookie, taking a bite and Elliot looked at him, "Say thank you," he said.
Noah looked up, "Thank you…" he said, his mouth full of cookie with crumbs sticking to his chin.
"You can tell Mommy that Uncle Don gave you the cookie," Elliot teased.
"Gee thanks," Don laughed. "Make me face her wrath…"
"El…" they heard Olivia's voice, echoing in from the bedroom. "Is Noah in there with you?"
"Yeah honey…I have him," Elliot called back to her. He looked at Cragen, "I'm gonna go tell her you're here. She's probably going to want to come out here…"
"Doesn't she have to stay in bed?" he asked.
Elliot shook his head, "She can lay on the couch…she just has to be as still as possible." He wheeled himself into the bedroom, Noah on his lap, and smiled when he saw Olivia sitting bed, pushing on her stomach. "You okay?" he asked.
She nodded, "I think so…" she sighed. "Braxton Hicks again…I don't know why I'm having them when all I've done is sleep for the last two hours." She closed her eyes, exhaling slowly…"God…"
"Breathe through it," Elliot tried to comfort her, but knew he was doing little good. She opened her eyes, and nodded, letting him know it had passed. "Are you sure they're just Braxton Hicks? They're not the real thing?"
Olivia shook her head, "I don't think so…they're Braxton Hicks. They're the same ones I've been having." She sighed, looking at Noah eating his cookie, "You gave him cookies, El?" she asked. "It's almost dinner time."
"I didn't give it to him," Elliot insisted.
"Then who did?" she rolled her eyes. "The cookie fairy?"
"His Uncle Don," Elliot smiled as he watched Olivia try to figure out who he was talking about. "Cragen's here…in the living room. He came to see you."
"What?" her eyes widened, then turned teary. "No…I don't want to see him."
"Why not?" Elliot asked, confused.
"Because…" Olivia said sadly. "I haven't seen him in a year. I look like shit. He won't even recognize me…"
"Since when do you care what Cragen thinks of your looks?" Elliot snickered. "Besides, he knows you're pregnant…I told him already."
"What'd he say?" she asked nervously.
"Liv…why do you care what he thinks?" Elliot asked. "He has no say over your life…he's not even your boss anymore."
She shrugged, "He always knew how I felt about you…and when you left…he tried to push me to get over you. I just thought…he might be disappointed in us…"
"Oh good God, Liv," Elliot sighed, "I don't care what the hell he thinks about us and you shouldn't either. Now come on, he's waiting and I told him I'd bring you out to the living room to see him."
"Let me get dressed first," she sighed, looking down at her white t-shirt that didn't even fully conceal her stomach and the pajama pants that were too tight. "If I can find something that fits." Suddenly she closed her eyes again, cringing at the pressure of yet another contraction, "Damn…" she sputtered.
Elliot put one hand gently on her stomach and took her hand with his other one, "Just breathe…and squeeze my hand if you need to…you're doing fine…" He felt her grip tighten and he could tell she wasn't having the usual Braxton Hicks, regardless of what she claimed. "Liv…you're doing great…"
"I'm okay," she said, exhaling deeply. "It's over…"
"Honey…we need to go to the hospital," Elliot said seriously.
Olivia shook her head crying, "I don't want to have her yet…" she cried. "It's too early…"
"I know…but we need to get to the hospital and make sure she's okay," he insisted. "I'm sure Cragen can drive us…"
Olivia nodded, tearfully. "El…I don't want to have her yet. I'm scared…"
"I know…" he said gently, trying not to let her know how scared he was too. "Everything's gonna be okay."
